What does this *22899 do differently than just calling *228 and using the menus? (1 for reprogramming, 2 for updating roaming)
I keep seeing this in the posts but don't know exactly what it does that is different.
Tom (Chimp)
*22899 is the same thing as *228 option 1, just doesn't require any user input.
Ah, cool... Thanks gc!
Curious....I've flashed DCD custom ROMs over and over, but never had to use the *228 I see mentioned. What does that actually do? I tried it on my Bell 6800, and press SEND after *228. "Programming in progress..." appears in yellow above the call info panel, but I hear "Your call cannot be completed as dialled".
Just curious as I seem to get by without it anyway.

Bell is probably *22803 like Telus.
I'm curious about this as well... I've done the *228 option 1 many times; but exactly what is that doing to my phone behind the scenes?

I've tried multiple times in different manners and cannot seem to get this command to work. At first I thought it might just be the DCD ROM I'm running but I even tried after flashing back the OEM. Actually flashed back just to see. So anyway, anyone else got any good ideas?
Now in my venture with ROM's yesterday and the new SPL I did end up messing my radio settings up. I figured if I just done *228 I could recover everything. Even though it said programming complete when I went to place a test call it said it couldn't authorize and told me to call *8899. I told the person who answered that I had to hard reset and now it wouldn't authorize. Then he asked me to *228 and I told him I already have with no results. He said do it again because he just reset something.
So once again I'm scratching my friggin head bacause of all of this. I can't get the commands to work so I can retrieve the A-Key and other info. Now I wonder if you can even get to that with Verizon in my area (Charlotte NC).
Anyone able to make sense of all of this and possibly lead me in the right direction?

Just followed your instructions, and run EPST ... is it normal that I don't have any A-KEY data
I'm on TELUS if that helps.
EPST is not working for me either. I got EPST Lab to fire up but nothing else.

yes that's fine.
I actually am on Verizon in Chicago and do not have an A-Key....should I worry or does it only matter by location?
I have Verizon in San Diego. I managed to brick the phone. VZN support figured out that I'd somehow erased the A-key and gave me a new one. I noticed after entering it and going back to look at it that it couldn't be viewed (kind of like a password). On other occasions I've managed to get myself dropped from the local switch (there words - not sure what it actually means) and have my ESN erased from their system.
I've found that turning off the phone radio (put it in flight mode) before experimenting with it keeps it from mucking up the network and eliminates those late-night calls to tech support.

Moonlight,
Are you saying that by going into flight mode before flashing helps prevent losing your A-Key?

I am verizon in chicago and i didn't have an A-Key either. It didn't matter, i ended up having to call verizon anyway and i was talking to tech support for a good hour or two and they kept remotely trying to re-authenticate my phone... on the third try it worked.
They even gave me a new A-Key and the damn A-Key didn't even work... the operator said that was the first time she has ever seen an A-Key not work.
... anyway it is all working great after tech support helped me re-activate everything.
ok this is what i did....i started from stock rom and upgraded my radio and rom to the newest available from dcd ( dcd 3.2.5 and Radio ROM 3.42.50).......i ran the verizon carrier CAB and for some reason when i dial #228 or any other kind of numbers for verizon it rings and goes to the recorded sprint guy giving me an error....any body know why???
you *MIGHT* have to soft-reboot first, I'm not sure.
Actually wait - did you say Sprint guy?

it might be a A-key issue, but i never heard of a sprint guy on a verizon network *228 phone call.. you pressed *228 and not #228 right?!?!

you let the customizations run... thats why.
Your phone is 'stuck' on Sprint's network until you relock, flash back on the Verizon stock ROM, and get a DMU/data reset.
The first part is easy, but getting them to do a DMU reset for your data (if you even need it, which isn't clear at this point) is kind of a pain in the ass from what I've heard.

Once you let Sprint's customizations run, they stick until you undo them by reflashing to a Verizon ROM (Stock with all the settings and stuff)
Does it say Sprint instead of Verizon Wireless wherever your phone indicator is? If so, you are on Sprint's Network...

You may still be stuck with a Sprint PRL/PRI or whatever.
Um, if I can find a way to export mine, I can upload it for you to import...
P.S. customizations on custom roms like DCD should be allowed to run, as they don't contain carrier-specific information, unless noted to have so.

Yeah, if you get it working on Stock finally (like everything working again, calls and data and everything), then just follow my guide to getting updated.

i cant do *22899......it says the feature code i have entered is not valid
I laugh a little every time I see someone post about *22899. *22899 does NOTHING different than dialing *228 option 1. It simply overrides the prompt and is used by Verizon during activation or troubleshooting so they can dial it and put the phone down to work on other stuff.
For some reason, people think it's like this secret magic fix and it absolutely is not.
Verizon has officially acquired Alltel, and is adding new towers daily for us verizoners. Do *2282 to update your phone to use these new towers.
Are you sure you have to do this?
dont have to, no. but more towers is gunna benefit you so why not? theyre adding new towers daily
sais my call can't be completed as dialed
for verizon users its *228 option 2 thats what flippy means.
or a better(shorcut) way just dial *22899
*22899 is *228 option 1, just without the menu. *228 option 2 to update towers. theres also *228 3 now that lets you switch your service from one phone to another

im a verizon user and for me *22899 = *228 menu 2
im a verizon user, and *22899 is option 1. call tech support and confirm. and then come back and tell me i was right.
didnt work for me told me to dial customer support. i did *228 2
I would suspect this would work both ways, too. So Alltel users can do this to add verizon towers.

Second'd.
I tried *22899 and *228, option 2 and both gave me unsuccessful programming
Anyone actually do this successfully?
I do *228 - Option 1, and *228 - Option 2, usually once a week.
Normally because I've installed a new ROM, or tried some software that required a hard reset
if you're trying the OTA programming and it is not successful, try reflashing your radio. or, take out your battery for 10 minutes, then turn the phone back on and do *228 option 1 or *22899 before trying option 2.
I just did *228 then 2 and it took a bit but it worked. said your verizon roaming capabilities have been successfully upgraded then it soft reset so i think it worked

lol yeah. normally when it says successful that means that it was not not successful
EDIT: in case you didnt know, you should do *228 2 once a month or so to update your towers.

Good question - mine was at 52167. *22899 resulted in a call that lasted briefly and then dropped (without any success or fail voice announcement) - no update.

Same thing happened to me. Immediately after I called *228, and did the press Menu to get the keypad up and hit 2 and that time it took the proper length of time and I guess it worked, I'm on that PRL - but I didn't pay attention what PRL I was on before.

Probably also depends on the subscriber's plan as well, now that I give it a little more thought.
After I made my prior post above, I did a nandroid restore of a stock 2.1 ROM, and did both a *228 option 2, and a *22899. Same result - 52167. (I can't get the dialpad to come up in CELB4.1 when dialing *228; perversely, it does come up if you dial *22899... when it isn't needed, lol)

Just got an interesting message from Verizon...
Free Verizon Msg: Airtime FREE VZW software update! Due to network chngs, you must dial *228 in VZW coverage area, press SEND & choose Option 1 to reprogram phn
So what kind of update is this?
Don't do it. This is just a PRL update but I'm pretty sure you are not supposed to ever dial *228 with a 4g phone, you can damage your sim card
Yeah, when I had my Thunderbolt they said several times in the forum not to dial *228.The radios correct automatically and *228 might mess the phone up.

It shouldn't let you dial *228. 4G devices get their PRL automatically.
*228 won't break your SIM. It simply gives a message that it can't update.

Waiting for root, so I am cautious about any updates.
*228 is not necessary with LTE phones. It will just end up fragging your SIM.

It better not cuz the Verizon guy did it on my phone when they were figuring out why I wasn't receiving calls. Then they just said it doesn't work on 4g.
