It's *228 2 time - Mogul, XV6800 ROM Development

Verizon has officially acquired Alltel, and is adding new towers daily for us verizoners. Do *2282 to update your phone to use these new towers.

Are you sure you have to do this?

dont have to, no. but more towers is gunna benefit you so why not? theyre adding new towers daily

sais my call can't be completed as dialed

for verizon users its *228 option 2 thats what flippy means.
or a better(shorcut) way just dial *22899

*22899 is *228 option 1, just without the menu. *228 option 2 to update towers. theres also *228 3 now that lets you switch your service from one phone to another

im a verizon user and for me *22899 = *228 menu 2

im a verizon user, and *22899 is option 1. call tech support and confirm. and then come back and tell me i was right.

didnt work for me told me to dial customer support. i did *228 2

I would suspect this would work both ways, too. So Alltel users can do this to add verizon towers.

Second'd.
I tried *22899 and *228, option 2 and both gave me unsuccessful programming
Anyone actually do this successfully?

I do *228 - Option 1, and *228 - Option 2, usually once a week.
Normally because I've installed a new ROM, or tried some software that required a hard reset

if you're trying the OTA programming and it is not successful, try reflashing your radio. or, take out your battery for 10 minutes, then turn the phone back on and do *228 option 1 or *22899 before trying option 2.

I just did *228 then 2 and it took a bit but it worked. said your verizon roaming capabilities have been successfully upgraded then it soft reset so i think it worked

lol yeah. normally when it says successful that means that it was not not successful
EDIT: in case you didnt know, you should do *228 2 once a month or so to update your towers.

*22899??

What does this *22899 do differently than just calling *228 and using the menus? (1 for reprogramming, 2 for updating roaming)
I keep seeing this in the posts but don't know exactly what it does that is different.
Tom (Chimp)
*22899 is the same thing as *228 option 1, just doesn't require any user input.
Ah, cool... Thanks gc!
Curious....I've flashed DCD custom ROMs over and over, but never had to use the *228 I see mentioned. What does that actually do? I tried it on my Bell 6800, and press SEND after *228. "Programming in progress..." appears in yellow above the call info panel, but I hear "Your call cannot be completed as dialled".
Just curious as I seem to get by without it anyway.

I'm curious about this as well... I've done the *228 option 1 many times; but exactly what is that doing to my phone behind the scenes?

PRL 30044 Disables my phone!!!

Hello I bought nice phone from ebay and I went to activate it and everything went fine, but when I do a *228 it updates the prl to 30044. After reset the phone does not work at all, the only way I can get it to work is if I use PRL 30036.
I have an alltel Phone and touch pro can anyone help? I have spent the last two days on tech support with Alltel and they dont know what to do, they told me the hardware is broken but how can that be if the prhone works with older PRL??
I just dont get it.
are u upgrading the roaming towers when doing *228 or doing the activate ur phone option ?
i am doing the option 1.
option one is to activate your phone option 2 updates the PRL - so chances are there something wrong with the activation process. so try option 2 instead of option 1 ... i do beleive 30036 is when alltel used 3rd party towers still and 30039 is when they started to cut out other carrier towers and switch over to pure alltel and verizon towers. but i dont know i havent tried editing the PRL files and compairing them.
is your phone a Alltel one or is it sprint or verizon or some unknown carrier created version?
Ok heres what I figured out, its not actually the prl updating that is disabling the phone, but the activation.. when I dial *228 and do option 2, it will update my prl.. and everything will work fine, but if I do an option 1 it will update the prl and disable the phone... Something else is happening when I do *228 with option one...
Alltel is clueless. The "engineer" that is handling my trouble ticket left me a voicemail today asking why i dont just keep the 30036 prl, well obviously since its outdated lol and I am roaming where ever I go.
Its an alltel phone with stock alltel Rom. The ebay listing said it works on verizon network. I spoke with a verizon rep and he said thats impossible. Again i know he is full of it because I have been reading the forums.
chances are the previous owner did some edits using QPST and possibly caused it to do some funky things... i dont see why the activation of the phone would cause it to disable but the verizon agent is half right(he is probably a CSR dealing in customer service not a TSR who deal with technical issues. he doesnt know jack about the technical aspects of the phone as much as he would like to think he does. but if its unlocked and flashed to a verizon rom it would work. possibly)
im thinking there is something that the phone is not interpriting correctly when it takes the activation update and confusing the living hell outta it ... what rom and radio is the phone running?
I have reverted back to the stock rom from alltel, which I read somewhere contains the newest radio. not sure where to look for the specific radio version.
I believe your right about the other guy using qpst to change some settings. It seems to hard to believe that it could be a hardware issue. i guess now I just need to know what settings he changed and get them back. Ive got QPST now and I have my phone connected to it, but I don't know what information to change so im kind of just waiting for instructions lol. I found a couple thread oon how to convert alltel phones to Verizon, but none that are going to alltel so I don't know where to get all the proper settings.
Ok so I read somewhere that part of the process of converting over to the other network is deleting the ha and aaa shared secret keys, then resetting the device, i did this, because I thought maybe he put in verizon in in these boxes, but it did not help, and now the two entried do not even show up in epst.
I tried re-adding them via QPST as text values, I write to phone, but the information does not take. I have the HA and aaa shared secret keys written down.
i think once u flash to stock rom that should change it for you when u do the activation so now that ur on stock try the *228 option 1 and see if it kills the phone features.
the radio you can find in device information should tell u the radio the prl and the meid and mdn.... what u wana make sure is that the mdn does not change when doing a *228 option 1 ... if that clears that would mean ur phone doesnt know it has a phone # :\
as for the QPST stuff i dont have it installed right now so i dont know the settings... the alltel stock rom shouldnt have an aaa key i beleive dew to the phone does not have auth for the internet like verizon. dont know about the HA though ... i think that comes from *228 option 1
what you can try is dial ##778# or ##778 and press send and it should pull it up the HA shared secret is something strange by the activation the AAA shared secret should be alltel you should be able to edit them in there itws under M.ip default profile
ok i see them now, I had NSFANS rom installed a few hours ago ann I was able to do ##3282# (doesnt work with altell rom) and I could actually restore the EPST settings there, after it reset everything was blank, I had to flash the stock alltel rom again to get all the alltel settings in there and I had to add my SID MSID and NAI, after that.
Something is still wrong though, Im not sure what my ha or aaa shared keys are even doing, or if i should change them. Im really lost at this point.
And Data hasnt been working since day 1 not sure if thats relevant.
data i think is what uses the keys ... also is the data connection set to use the #777 to dial out with no user name or password ... does the *228 option 1 work when on the alltel stock rom also?
Ok the user name and password were blank, I seem to remember on my titan the settings were [email protected] and password blank., the *228 option 1 messes the phone up then i have to install a older prl, everything works except i get a romaing triangle and no evdo, just 1x.
I just spoke with an alltel rep again to pick his brain for a minute and he said why am i doing option 1 that could mess my phone up, and really i have no idea why i am trying to do it. i just want my evdo to work and to get a good signal and Data to work properly.
Ok so noy my data works.. lol
Only real problem I have is no ev and the roaming triangle.
the roaming thing is usually comes from a flash of a differnet carriers stock rom and it ran the customizations ... that could also be the cause of the option 1 f-ing everything up but you said u flashed to the stock alltell one off the htc site so it should wipe out those settings... im waiting right now for the replacement phone to come in the mail once it gets here ill copy down all the settings from stock and post em but iv been waiting about a week and a half for it to arrive so im not holding my breath. (the last one they sent took a month and it was active on some one elses account and it was listed as stolen... how nice of them)
I cant find where the mdn information is listed.
I found the HA and AAA shared secret keys, but I dont know if I should delete them or just leave them be..
Ok I got my new phone today, a brand new one. And they were having the same exact problem activating it as they were with this phone. Im gonna have to chalk this one up as an error on alltels network. One thing I think it may have been is that I had my number changed recently so my number and my MSID are not the same my MSID is my old phone number.
They started to tell me that the new phone i bought was broken again and I said the chances of that were astronomical. I told them to go in the back and get me one of their touch pros, activate it and then try telling me the same thing. He came back out with a blackberry, activated it then smirked as he was able to activate it. I said that's not a touch pro though, go in the back and get a touch pro and try to activate that. as I was saying that he reactivating my new touch pro, and then he was like "oh its working now" lol so for now its working.
Now that I have both touch pros, the only difference i can find in the EPST settings are the SID/NID numbers, on the new one the settings are 1/244, on the old one the settings are 244/63535. don't quote me on the 63535, it was similar to that but i have already packaged the phone for shipment and i don't feel like getting it back out.

Will I have to unroot??

So i finally decided today that i will keep my tuhunderbolt with verizon and drop sprint and my epic. I called verizon and got the porting process started to bring my sprint number over to my TB. The guy told me in about 4 hours to try dialing *228 and chose option one. Its been 5 hours now and whenever i try dialing *228 and hit call it connects for about 1 second then disconnects. I dont know if this is normal if the porting process isnt finished yet or if this is because my TB is rooted with BAMF 1.3 installed and im unable to do service programming. So will i have to unroot, do the *228 thing, then reroot?

you dont have to do *228 ever on a 4g device. it auto programs on boot
aslong as you got your number set up and verizon knows your sim number (18 or 19 digit number, something like that, dont feel like ripping mine out to verify). Just place the sim in your device and fire it up, as soon the phone powers up it should auto activate. You will know it is activated when you see a 3g or 4g system above the signal meter.. if it's still on 1x, try making a test call to voice mail (*86) and if that works and you hang up, hopefully your data will come around.
I would also call from a landline and see if prompts you that the user's voicemail is not setup etc... that will let you know if the number ported off yet etc. /edit
And if you are powered up, have 1x and make a test call and your line/sim is activated. **It can take up to 15 mins for your data connection to be active, so if your test calls work and you have no data, just wait a few minutes and it will come around.** /edit2

Thanks! Ill try rebooting my phone and see if that fixes it
magneticzero is exactly right. On a 4G phone the old *228 doesnt work. You might want to try rebooting the phone every so often and that should get your old number to pop-up.
I ported my number over to my thunderbolt while running a custom rom. I called gave them all my information. Was told that an email was suppose to be sent to me so that I can authorize the port. 45 minutes later I hadn't received an email so I called and was allowed to authorize it over the automated system which the call rep was on the line too. 5 minutes later a text was sent to my phone advising me that my number had been successfully ported. Had I just done the automated authorization the port process might have only taken about 10-15 minutes. I was never told to dial *228.
Just rebooted my TB and still dont have my old number yet :/ ill give it some more time, im just glad i dont have to unroot
I just saw the other part of your post magneticzero, they never asked me for the number on my sim, should i call and make sure?

I had to remove my sim card, reinstall, and reboot, then it found my number.
I was told by Verizon never to use the *228 feature. Because *228 will fry the sim card. I get the feeling by this phone using a sim card they may have more access to what is going on with it. I guess I will find out soon. Since the first thing I did was root it and flashed a custom rom.

It's not that they have any more access to what is happening on your phone then they did before. What changed is the use of a SIM card instead of a MEID.
The reason that you cannot call *228 is that VZW has to run two very unique provisioning systems, one for GSM and one for CDMA and *228 is the access number for the CDMA provisioning system. Because of the fundamental differences in technology between the networks, on a GSM (LTE) network there is no need for a customer accessible provisioning system. Even if you don't live in a 4G area, your phone provisioning is still controlled by the LTE system on the back end.
Remember on all prior CDMA phones your phone was actually tied to the CDMA network via the MEID number that was unique to each phone. The purpose of *228 was to have the phone pull down all of the provisioning information from the VZW back end servers (I.E. your phone number and all of the other provisioning information that the phone needs to operate correctly on the network with your phone number). Because the MEID was unique and hard coded into each handset any time a change was made to the account the end user had to dial *228 to update the information on the phone itself.
Now (and this is why everyone who has been with VZW for any length of time is being thrown for a loop) with GSM service (LTE is a GSM service) you are assigned a unique Subscriber Identity Module (SIM card). This card contains a unique number, along with all of the basic information any LTE phone needs to communicate with the network, which is hard coded in the sim card you are assigned when you got your TB and this number is assigned to your phone number in VZW's back end system (just like your MEID was prior). There is no such thing as an MEID like you are used to in an LTE network. Everything is tied to the unique identifier on the SIM card, not the phone itself.
Your TB has no MEID. It gets all of its provisioning information every time it boots from the information stored on the SIM card. That is why dialing *228 does absolutely nothing, because there is no MEID on the phone for the provisioning system to read, and there are no settings on the phone it can update.
Welcome to the SIM card express train, population, everyone already on a GSM network. And for what its worth, SIM cards have been in use in the US for a long time now. In fact many of the problems VZW techs are having frying SIM cards because they are not handled correctly or activated correctly very much reminds me of when PacBell Wireless first rolled out GSM service (PCS as they called it) back in 1997.
Success! Thanks to your detailed explanation Nusince I figured out that it wasn't updating because I had turned 4G off and also changed to their old 3g network using the ##778# dialer code. After putting those two settings back to their stock setting and I rebooted BAM my old number showed up and I had 3g again. Then I turned 4G off and went back to the old 3g network that way my phone doesn't keep dropping the data connection and it's all smooth sailing. Thanks for your help everyone and hopefully this helps someone in the future.

Unable to Authenticate while Roaming on Verizon

Ok...so I know there are other threads...read them all about this and Ive tried 3 times with Sprint updating and changing the MID number, PRL, Data reset but I still cant connect to roam. Dunno here, but I'd give it another shot. After I rooted and got a signal 16, I just stayed on the line, followed the instructions given, and was back up and operational within 2 minutes.
Note, though, that Engadget had a post saying that they were going to be pushing an update to the Evo3D in the next couple of weeks. The story also had a suggestion that it may close off the S-OFF/Root hole that the Revolutionary team found.

Well thats just sketchy on their part. lol
I was having the same problem. I was forcing Roam using Roam Control and when I did I was unable to place calls and received a Verizon Error message. Also 3G roaming data would not work. I could only receive calls while roaming. Here is what i did to fix it and I think it may be a combination... I reflashed the ROM I am using (ViperROM 1.3) and it still didn't work. So at a complete loss, I called Sprint. The sprint support rep said they have acknowledged a problem with the EVO 3D not roaming correctly. She had me make sure that the Roaming was set to Sprint Only, not automatic. and then she had me power down and pull battery. Once my phone came back up, Roaming worked!! I'm thinking she did something on her end to make it work. Also the dev for Roam Control, MrGreg said that there have been a lot of reports that Root messes up Roam Control on the 3D.

Just to clarify, I wouldn't say that rooting affects Roam Control specifically, but it affects roaming altogether. This was a pretty typical problem with the original EVO as well. Sprint is usually able to fix the "unable to authenticate" problem if you give them a call.

Well I couldnt get it to work on viper, Helicopter or Joelz.....Im going to try synergy since it says it cleans up some of the root method....maybe that will help. I never once got a rep saying they knew there was a roaming problem...
Ok so I got roaming to work...I asked the lady at sprint to do the profile update and HLR reset then I asked for a ESN refresh....he supervisor then got on the line asked how he could help. After he gave the spill about them not promising roaming will work all the time I told him I don't understand how an EVO sitting next to my 3D could roam perfectly fine and mine not. He said he would refresh everything on their end including ESN. I left my phone off for a few mins and now I can roam perfectly fine!

Had the same problem and after multiple calls to sprint with no help, I figured I would try to reset the phone and do a hands free activation. After I did this, everything has worked fine and roaming/calls/text have been perfect.
Note you must know your MSL to do this and be on Sprints network. You can call sprint for your MSL, or if you have root/s-off you can download MSL reader from the market
https://market.android.com/details?id=com.esccode.msl&feature=search_result
1. Go to data menu by entering ##3282# on the dialpad.
2. Click on "Edit Mode".
3. Enter your MSL # and hit "OK"
4. Choose "Data Profile".
5. Press your menu button on the phone and select "Restore" from the menu that appears. Then hit "OK.
6. Phone should reboot.
7. It should start hands-free activation.
Hope this helps.
I was getting this error. I called sprint, and they said it was an outage, it should be fixed in x, days, and told me I was entitled to compensation. They gave me a $25 credit for it. It's not a whole lot, but I'll take it.
I had the same problem...I did the Sprint Chat and asked for an HLR refresh, and that fixed it!
just do a sprint chat and tell them you have a error 16 they will tell u to hold on a min then they will tell u what to do and after that it will be fixed

Thanks I requested the HLR refresh and it worked!!!
I had the Verizon roaming authentication problem and made several calls to support with no meaningful progress (one rep told me to bring the phone to a store for an update). Then I chatted with a rep tonight and asked them to perform a CHLR refresh and reload my ESN. They had me pull the battery and the phone updated on reboot. Roaming finally works again.
I called and had a reset done and now I am stuck in 1x data hell roaming and not. Anyone else have that problem, I think I am gonna have to call back today and have them undo whatever they did.

Just got an interesting message from Verizon...
Free Verizon Msg: Airtime FREE VZW software update! Due to network chngs, you must dial *228 in VZW coverage area, press SEND & choose Option 1 to reprogram phn
So what kind of update is this?
Don't do it. This is just a PRL update but I'm pretty sure you are not supposed to ever dial *228 with a 4g phone, you can damage your sim card
Yeah, when I had my Thunderbolt they said several times in the forum not to dial *228.The radios correct automatically and *228 might mess the phone up.

It shouldn't let you dial *228. 4G devices get their PRL automatically.
*228 won't break your SIM. It simply gives a message that it can't update.

+1. My device showed this message when I tried *228 during the outage a few days back.
Waiting for root, so I am cautious about any updates.
*228 is not necessary with LTE phones. It will just end up fragging your SIM.
