Can i migrate my Qwest Mogul to verizon or Sprint? - Mogul, XV6800 ROM Development

I have a Qwest branded Mogul.
i am currently running DCD 3.26 and radio 3.42.50 (THX DCD!!!)
qwest is shutting down and forcing their customers to choose a different provider
i have not had my phone for very long, so of course i would like to find a way to use my mogul so i don't have to purchase a new phone
i am aware that i can load custom rom's with different carrier optimizations,
---> so i (as well as most qwest customers ) am curious if anyone knows if either verizon or Sprint will activate the ESN for my mogul.
any thoughts?

I would call a service rep, and ask them, otherwise its as easy as installing a Sprint Carrie cab by DCD. The last thing to do is figure out if Sprint well activate the ESN to allow access to there network.
Godspeed

I'm pretty sure they would just need to put your ESN on their network, which is the hard part since they'd rather you have one of their Mogul's / XV6800's. Good luck trying to port it. Let us know how it goes. I am interested cuz I have an old Mogul and if I could port that to Verizon and have both phones on that account it would be pretty cool.

Has anyone had any luck doing this? Migrating it from Qwest to Sprint successfully? And if so, what would be the correct steps to migrate it?
Would I need to/could I flash a Sprint ROM on the phone?
I see that there is discussion about SPC or MSPL with these phones? What is this used for?
Any help would be greatly appreciated!
Thanks
Brandon

Qwest Mogul on VZW or Sprint
You need to know the code to enter into the MSL to unlock the phone.
The program Get SPL works for most people.
I had to edit the rgeistry to find mine.
Once you have changed the MSL code to 000000,
I use QPST to backup all the important settings just in case I have to adjust data settings.
You need to flash the Olipro bootloader (I use 2.40) then the radio, then you can flash any custom ROM you like.
Then just install a carrier CAB file for your carrier, to the phone.
I find that PPCKitchen has the best program to pick and choose just the programs that you want.
But try a few Pre-cooked ROMs if you like.
There quite a few Chefs here and over at PPCGeeks that put a lot of time and effort into building and uploading custom ROMs for people to try out.
They all monitor the threads to help out if you have any issues.
And remember that you can use a TITAN/Mogul ROM cooked for any carrier,
Just load that CAB file for the carrier that you use.
Also, try to flash via SD card when you can. You never know that cable may fail, or the power outag occures.
Hope this helps,

Above all your esn has to be accepted by whatever provider you want to use. Most of them will not allow the quest esn to be used. So before you do anything all and ask.

Qwest Mogul on VZW or Sprint
Yes that is a very good point.
I have 3 Qwest PPCs that have that problem.
The ESNs are good, but because of policy, I now have 3 ROM slaves.
eBay has plenty of Sprint 6800s, most of the "Usable" ones sell for around $50oo.
If you fee you need to rid yourself ofthat item, PM me pleae.
I could use the parts for a security project I am working on.
Either way, you could allways use it as a test unit to practice on.

quest to whatever.
i dont know about where you all are located, but here in the peoples republic of California if you totaly metro or cricket out your mogul , with working mms and all , you can get 200 to 300 depending on the condition. food for thought.

upgrade compatablity

I currently have a HTC Titan, through a local cellular company that is not affiliated with any of the major carriers I just want to know if I can preform ROM/RADIO upgrades on this phone without breaking it, my current radio version is 1.64.00 and rom is 2.17.557.0. Is there any way to upgrade this phone, or do I have to wait for my pokey company to get features likes, closing programs when they are xed out.
edit, fixed the name of the phone, so I don't sound quite so ill advised
Who is your service provider?? If it's a Mogul, then you can upgrade it....
pioneer telephone, its here out of oklahoma, I couldn't find anything compatible with that radio version, is it possible to upgrade that as well, sorry for all of the newbie questions, but a forum search pulled up alot of information but nothing for my particular radio version, which as far as i can tell, seems to be the biggest hangup.
There's no carrier cab for your provider.
Is there any way to make a carrier cab, or is it something you have to get from your provider?

The carrier cabs are not provided by the carriers; they're provided by dcd for different carriers. Since they're all hand-made, then yes it is possible to make one. But it might be difficult for anyone other than dcd to make one, since he came up with the idea and has the "spec" for them in his mind. If you want to do some research, I'd suggest taking one of the existing carrier cabs, extracting the files, and trying to make sense of what's in there and what needs to be changed for your carrier. I have no idea if things will be self-explanatory enough to make your own carrier cab.

Carrier cabs can be made, but it requires a dump and he would also have to go through his EPST settings with us etc.
What exactly do I need to dump, also I'm running vista but could boot into kubuntu if needed. Also, what info is needed from my epst?
I'm going to go over and have it taken back to factory because something I've done has made it freeze up when the keyboard is opened. Would ppcpimbackup be able to make the dump you need?
went to the office, and apparently they don't even have the ability to flash the phone back to factory, said they would have to ship it back to HTC to have it reflashed. So, there is a pretty good chance that this phone has original firmware with Pioneers carrier id?? in it. Will anything be possible still?

Sprint Mogul for Alltel?

Hi, this is my first post on the XDA forums and I have some Q's. Hopefully I find some A's. Can someone point me in the right direction or explain this. I bought a used Sprint Mogul and I have Alltel. I want to have this phone work for Alltel. All I have right now is the newest HTC rom for alltel and the Titan Unlocker. Will someone give me a hand on how to make this phone my new phone for Alltel? BTW I dont want to really run any custom roms unless I have to.
Thanks,
Moulds
The problem isn't the rom, the problem is that carriers store their "own" ESN's in their systems, since the phone wasn't sold to Altel originally, it won't be in their system. There are stories of people having success getting one carrier or the other to activate other carriers phones, but it's extrememly rare and very difficult to do. The first thing you would have to do is download the stock rom for Altel for your model phone, flash it, and verify the phone boots and appears to work. At this point, you can try going into the Altel store and see if you can convince their reps to activate the phone. If they won't, then try calling customer service and see if you can get them over the phone to do it, however again, their system is going to throw up a flag when they try to activate someone other carriers phone.
If the phone doesn't look exactly like Altel's there is even less of a chance of getting it activated.
Honestly your best bet is to put it back on ebay and take the proceeds from that sale to buy a used Altel phone. You will have a whole lot less trouble.

Well what if I took the current esn of my razr on change my mogul to that? would that work and if so how do I do that.
That is illegal and even discussing it in this forum can get you banned.
While possible, Altel will know it's a data phone and could legally sue you for violating their terms of service.
Again, your best bet is either to change to Sprint, or swap the phone out on ebay for one from Altel.

Mogul on Alltel
I just bought a Mogul and loaded an Alltel stock ROM last weekend. It has been working great. Alltel will put the ESN in no problem if you call them on the phone. Don't tell them it is from another carrier. All they asked me was what type of phone it was.
Tools I used:
ftp://ppcgeeks.com/../Tools/QPST_2.7.249.zip -THis is used to unlock your phone if needed and update the service information from Sprint to Your Provider
ftp://ppcgeeks.com/../Tools/GetSPC.zip (finds your phone's MSL if it needs unlocked).
ftp://up.ppcgeeks.com/Titan/Users/Im...rd-SPL-MFG.exe - Run this and then your RUU loader afterwords to install your ROM
Latest ROM ver 3.52.671.9 (What I am running) @ http://www.htc.com/us/supportdownloadlist.aspx?p_id=63&act=all
make sure you have the usb cable, activesync if you are on XP, otherwise Vista has it already.
Basically you need to
1. Get the MSL code from GetSPC inputing your ESN and it outputs the MSL.
2. Put your phone in DIAG mode (##3424# ##3424 Send, or #*#3424). If it is a sprint phone, the first one will work.
3. Run QPST (you will need the MSL you obtained from getSPC
4. You may want to save the phone's configuration if you ever want to roll back to the SPCS config. Anway, Change the MSL to 000000 and write it back to the phone.
5. then run the Hard-SPL-MFG.exe program, paying attention to when it tells you to disconnect and reconnect your phone.
6. Then install your ROM by running the RUU program on your pc.
7. Now, you will need to configure service by going into DIAG mode again (probably need to use ##3424 SEND now) and using QPST change the service information to that for Alltel or whatever carrier you want. I had it easy, I plugged in my Samsung Hue R500 and copied the service information off of that one.
8. If you get all the service information right, you should be able to call Alltel, give them the ESN. If they give you slack, wait a bit and call back until you get someone nice. Persistance is the key. Then you can do *228 for OTA programming.
If you need Alltel config I will post it here, just PM me.

The Altel store here doesn't. I don't have Altel so I have never called their customer service, but since I see this same question asked for every other carrier and they all get the same advice I handed out, I assumed that all Altel stores were the same.
Sorry for "misinforming" someone, however, the fact that it has been programmed for sprint may cause him issues down the road... So again, I still think my advice of getting an Altel branded phone is the smartest option.
BTC
Wow thanks for the help anything else I should be warned of?
why would getting an alltel phone be any different than using a sprint/AT&T etc phone. They are all the same, just locked onto their networks for service. If he had bought an HTC Titan that was not branded to a carrier he would have the same luck as all others. Many people still buy unlocked out of the box phones. Most carriers will also add them to their services. The stores may not, but the phone people will. These companies are in business to make money and have customers and turning someone down because they don't get your free phone ain't gonna happen. Just don't tell them it was another carrier's phone.
First off AT&T is GSM, which means if the phone is unlocked you can just stick and sim card in there and bam, it works.
CDMA is different. I know I have looked at my QPST and EPST info pretty close, and there are many settings in there that are carrier specific, so that if you were to try to use it on a different carrier it wouldn't work very well. Phone most likely will work, but data is a different beast. I see dozens of people on here who flash a sprint rom on their verizon phone and accidently let customization run, once you've done this, rolling back to a verizon rom in some cases doesn't fix the problem, you have to go in and hand edit a lot of settings, the same could apply here, since Sprint apparently is different than most carriers.
I'm glad you've had luck getting other carriers phone's activated, and how many of those were smart phones? I bet most were just plain phones, in which case there isn't any problems.
I'm not gonna get in a flamewar with you, I stated my opinion, you stated yours, I feel yours is wrong, you feel mine is wrong. Lets leave it at that.
As to the OP, feel free to try to get it activated, heck, it might work, but if it doesn't, then again, get the correct carrier branded phone and you will have no problems!
BTC
One question am I able to just get the service information from my razr and use that? and if so how do I do that.
actually I am not flaming, and not stating opinion. I am stating fact. If you buy a stock HTC phone w/o contract, which would be unlocked. You can get it activated on any carrier that supports its network CMA or GSM. Smartphone or regular phone. The point is to not tell them it was from another carrier.

the link to the 3rd file you listed is broken... is there anywhere else to get that file? i've tried to google it but i cant get the whole filename from the link to do so.
Thanks for any help
Actually it can be done. I done it today with no problem. Just because the epst and qpst settings are carrier specific doesn't mean that they cant be changed. What I will say is that after you have unlocked the phone and finally have your # activated on alltel via esn your sprint mogul will be functional. you have to update the prl so u wont be stuck in roaming and your data package will be disabled because Sprint uses a different server address. In order to change these settings you will use both qpst to set in hard settings and back everything up and then epst to keep the settings within the phone. the reason you wont have data has to deal with the Security and M.IP settings. its a lot to type so im not going to but if im on at any time you can pm me to walk you through it or even better you can reach me on yahoo messenger. its set within my phone as well so I can give you real time help with the settings on the spot. My messenger name is seraphazaziel79 as well.
I bought a Qwest phone sometime this Spring and I was trying to get it activated on Verizon. I flat out told them it was from another carrier, they put that in my customer file and copied down the ESN so when I called back and told them that it was a XV6800 they called me out on it. Basically lie to them from the beginning and you should be good. If they won't activate it you can sell a Sprint phone on ebay. My Qwest phone makes a pretty decent paper weight.

HTC 6800 Carrier/Service Provider?

I have searched for hours and did not see anything that relates to my specific situation. I have the HTC PPC6800 via a small carrier/service provider with no “smart phone” tech support. They have been great and I’m not interested in changing. They have obviously purchased the 6800 through a large carrier. I would like to know if there is any way via a registry editor, software, etc., that I can find out which carrier (Alltel, Sprint, etc) my 6800’s software is based on so I might be able to upgrade. I’m running WM 6.0, the ROM is 2.17.557.0 and the Radio is 1.64.00.
Thanks!
2.17 sounds like first sprint rom..Is it cdma?
Yes it is CDMA.
Previously I did try to upgrade to the Sprint ROM off HTC's site and it was 2 days of "hair pulling" to get it back working again. There is nothing that displays, or can be found on the phone to indicate there is any specific carrier. I was hoping that somewhere there might be an "indicator" in as to which carrier it is based on.
Thank you for responding!
I believe the roms themselves are all generic to a point, the stuff that makes them carrier based is the apps they include and the stuff that the carrier cab installs on custom roms. I know the carriers don't use the same cabs we have, but I would imagine if you use QPST to read and save your programming configuration and then copy down every single line of info in your EPST and then double check your dial up connection, make sure it's #777 that it dials, that you should be able to flash any rom and then write back your info with QPST and then re-enter all the info from EPST, make sure your dialup connection is back, and this really should get you back up.
I don't really have a lot of info on carriers, but USCC is like yours they use someone elses work and just build off of it. So I don't have a stock carrier to revert back to as well.
I know I flashed someones phone the other day that I just could not get QPST to read the info from, and was able to get it back online by just writing back my QPST info from my phone and just edit the fields that were account specific and then fixed a couple lines in EPST and everything worked.
So I believe my method I described above should get you up and running, but I could be wrong, might want to wait until a couple other experts chime in.

Alltel 6800 flash to Verizon firmware?

Talked to a VZ tech today who told me that if i was to activate to VZW and get a phone I could do an ESN change (he would force the ESN on the VZW network) with my Alltel PPC6800....
One catch he said I had to flash the phone with the VZW firmware before he could do it so he could be held liable for extra charge if the phone wasnt VZW compatiable, also he can not supply me with the flash kit.
Anyone have any ideas on this ?

Flash it, and then call him back. It not hard & works great.
flash the mr1 update. here's the wiki for flashing, recommend you read over that. you should however flash VZ's rom and have them program your phone before flashing any sort of custom rom.
DO NOT FLASH THE VZW MR1 ROM!
THis will lock down you GPS to be used only by VZ Navigator. Assuming that you care to have unlocked GPS.
Do you care about GPS?
Also need to know the ROM you have right now.
Go to System->Settings->About (?) and report what it says.
Flash To MR1 and use the Valhalla fix to unlock GPS. Or do like others said go to MR1 and then to a custom rom. Last choice is go to the Stock 6800 with no 6.1 and then go to a customer DCD rom after they authorize the phone. You have many choices.
Well since GPS wasnt really a factor to me i decided to go ahead and run the RUU_TITAN_VZW_WWE_3.57.605.1_RS_TITAN_3.37.75_OM_VZW_ShipFULL file from the HTC website and i got to 11% and got an error 294 Invalid Vendor ID
Do I need to unlock this phone first? makes sense but i didnt try first.
Also
Windows Mobile 6 Pro CE OS 5.2.1629 Build 18136.0.4.8
and
TITA100
SPL-2.07.0000
CPLD-9
instead of me getting frustrated and then drunk may i ask someone to layout the instructions they would follow to flash this alltel phone to the MR1 VZ flash...
All the reading is making my head hurt and i understand less and less the more i read
edit:: Ok 6 beers later i got the nerve up to use the Hard-SPL-MFG.exe and the RUU from the verizon site so far so good going monday to see about getting it turned on then i get to restore tomtom off of my sd card and follow the GPS fix and see if that works.
Thanks for the advice
Just an update
Just wanted to update everyone that VZ swapped my Alltel PPC over with no questions. They told us (me and the tech) to dial *228 and choose opt. 3 and the system activated no problem....maybe this is verizon getting ready for the Open Equipment Policy???? I dunno but it sure made my life a little easier...just got the dreaded PPP 11 Error now no help for that
edit:: So the tech that swapped my equipment an hour ago called me back from the store ( I work at Radioshack and VZ is four doors down so we are friends) to come and get my phone that the PPP 11 Error will be fixed tomorrow when a higher teir is at work that for SOME REASON ed(hehehe) the VZW system didnt recognize the ESN as a PPC and the Data Session was Hung somewhere. Everything else is working calling in and out and reg sms txt is sending just no Data till tomorrow
!!!!!!QUESTION for anyone who reads this....I just got to thinking this is something that should be on the Wiki for people with data problems mainly with all the Number porting,,,on the PPP usernames should it be
your MDN or MSID @vzw3g.com ???? because for some of us that is two different numbers
so what is the update on this because I can get the alltel version for like 50 while the vzw is twice as much not to mention the alltel version looks better.
It is a whole lot of work to try to get the phone on. And there are no guarantees
so even though Verizon is a parent company of Alltel I just can't flash it with Verizon rom and then get it activated on VZW?

Cross Carrier ROM flash?

I have searched this forum and the net and could not get a definative answer. Possibly someone knowledgeable and experienced can answer this question?
Is the “base” OS the same for each CDMA carrier? If so, can you update using a “similar” carrier Rom and then soft rest before it installs the carrier specific add-ons? Example: Flash Alltel ROM to US Cellular 6800.
Thanks!
yes, you can, if you really wanted to. chances are, the customizations will get run at one time or another though. you might not be able to get around it. just remember that you have to unlock your phone first using a hard spl. but yeah, it could be done. is there a specific reason why you want the alltel rom for your USC 6800?
I would also recommend against this, and the reason why is if their carrier customization ever starts, now or down the road, you are screwed. Since USCC has no stock rom, getting the settings back where they belong is a real pain in the ass.
It still voids your warranty just like any custom rom would, so you may as well run one of the custom roms that have more memory, more recent versions of WinMO, and GPS enabled.
All in all, there is never a good reason to flash a carrier rom, unless its your carrier and you are returning it for warranty support. Otherwise the carriers roms are locked down, less memory, their bloatware and less options for you.
BTC
Thank you both for the responses!
The reason behind the question is that my carrier is small (great company) and they don't have the ability to offer/supply upgrades, and HTC refuses to even let me register so I have no avenue for an upgrade to 6.1. My carrier has purchased the 6800's through another carrier and I have not been able to get a solid answer as to what carrier it is based on.
I very much want access to 6.1 and stand alone GPS, not to mention the better BT stack and threaded SMS. I was hoping that I could use a "base" upgrade from a similar carrier and avoid the carrier add-ons during the upgrade with the soft reset. The carrier that supplied the 6800's has been narrowed down to Alltel or US Cellular. Alltel has an upgrade, US Cellular does not. At least not that I can find.
Thank you again!
Your issue will come down to whether you can find a compatible carrier cab then.
Use QPST to back up your phone's programming, and copy down every field in every section of EPST, this will at least give you a base to go back to.
Honestly if you follow the route of the custom roms, use QPST to restore the phone's programming and then fix any EPST differences, your phone should just work. You may have to recreate the dialup connection so that it can still get on the internet, but if it doesn't work, there isn't any going back.
So, you might mention what carrier you have and see if anyone else from the same carrier has had any success. Flying blind is dangerous, usually there will be someone else who is in the same boat that has taken the plunge and can probably assist you in how to do it for your carrier.
BTC
BTC,
Thank you again for the words of wisdom which are points well taken. Unfortunately, I have only found one other person that shares the carrier and the 6800 and he's at the same starting point I am.
We are "comparing" notes now and will hopefully come up with a solution. I have (I believe) downloaded QPST but have not played with it yet. I guess you could say I was being lazy and hoping for an easy option. I guess it's time to jump in the water...
Again, many thanks!
Tim
Here is a decent article that talks about how to use QPST (in a different context, but it at least walks you thru the basics you will need).

I've been in the same situation with a small carrier. Illinois Valley Cellular to be specific. We get our phones from other carriers too. I talked to tech about upgrades, they told me to do whatever works. I'm using an unlocked bootloader with a custom ROM. Thought they did tell me someone did the same with a Sprint stock ROM to get GPS working. I used QPST to back up everything and saw some traces of Cellular South in the programming too!
Thanks to all that responded! I guess I have lots of "studying" to do.
