I'm new to all of this and am trying to fix my ATT 8525. The problem is that I have horrible reception. Im in a 3g area but during calls people cant hear me and they hear crackling. I determined that on Edge vs 3g it works better...so I installed a hack that allows me to select the Band and force it to stay on edge. That helped a ton...but still not even nearly as good as my friends older phones or my sister's Treo 685 (?).
SO from reading it seems I need to update the radio? Its currently 1.40.30.00
Exactly what is the process to do this? I've read posts here and am a bit confused and am worried Ill mess it up...its still under warranty as its only a couple weeks old. can someone help me...in non tech terms, the process I need to follow.
Thanks!

maybe
so...
SO is the order of install:
HardSPL
then the radio update, with Radio upgrade only using CustomRUU 4.3?
Or is there a better, safer way?
What does, "You can now do radio only upgrades in Bootloaders other than SPL 1.04." mean? DO I have to install a bootloader or is it already installed from att and how do I check?
Sorry for all the questions - this is all new to me.

HardSPL will not make flashing the radio safer. HardSPL makes your phone *superCID so that you may flash ANY ROM (not radio or radio bootloader) even if the CID is different. So if your radio and radio bootloader are not locked down, anytime you flash a rom that includes the radio and radioBL, they will be upgraded along with it. Then you would have to do radio-only upgrades; if they are even necessary.
I would check the hermes wiki for information on flashing radio upgrades.
Personally, if the reception stinks in your area, I don't think flashing the ROM will make it any better. The cingular radio roms are developed by HTC for Cingular. Any differences in RF, imho, would be strictly due to environmental, geographical and cellular system factors. All this talk about better battery life and RF gains in newer radios is purely subjective and comes down to a he-said she-said situation. However, if Cingular has a new WM6 version out with a new radio included; you may as well flash it as it may help you out. I am not sure, but is the new Cingular rom an official final release? Or just a leak/test version?
I dont think its been officially released yet. Well, I am not going to worry about doing it now if the consenus is that reception will not be improved. Funny thing is that reception in my area is great...its this phone. All my friends and family have ATT and absolutely no problems. I have used it in 3 different major cities in different parts of the US and have the same problem in all. I love this 8525 for everything but phone calls. ATT is sending me a new one this week and I am hoping its better...otherwise I might have to get a different phone completely.

This is not actually true. HardSPL also prevents the IPL/SPL areas from being accidentally overwritten. It does protect you in the event that the file you are trying to flash is not a good file.
Does anyone know the current bell mobility PRL? My phone seems to be stuck forever in roaming mode. I flashed DCD's bell ROM and my phone is constantly stuck in roaming mode and it shows the carrier as Sprint. Any ideas or do i need to re-program my phone?

Ahh -- sorry dude. Wish I could have helped.
If a Bell user with a working device has QPST installed on their PC, we could extract their PRL to share with everyone. (and i'd like a copy for my kitchen)
How do I extract the PRL? I haven't flashed the new rom yet and I'm a Bell Mobility user.
Cheers,
Tom
SUCCESS!!
So after hours of searching, it hit me like a ton of bricks....The PRL file has to within the stock rom
After that it was a case of looking up the current PRL
so here you go Bell users.... FLASH AWAY!!!
PS: Remember to delete the .txt extension before upgrading
I am a Bell user, and I flashed yesterday, but I don't think I had any issues with roaming. How can you tell if it's roaming?
The EV icon is replaced by the roaming triangle, normally the phone will warn you that you are in roaming mode if you get an incoming call or if your data connection is about to commence provided you have the roam guard settings set to ON

Thank you, I don't think mine is roaming then. The phone will tell you with a verbal message (similiar to "The number is long distance. You will now....") prior to you answering it then?

Bell mobility users who flash the new sprint rom will need to update their radio with the above prl otherwise your phone will constantly roam
How can I help? I heard dcd is looking for a PRL to add to his 3.0 kitchen for Bell Canada. But you will have to guide me cuz I don't know how to extract the PRL. I tried ##228# but it just asks me for an unlock code...

I have a Bell Mobillity PPC6800 as well. I had updated it with the latest official ROM from UTStarcom's website. Am i at a certain risk because of this if i try to use this latest Sprint radio on it ? (and the DCD 3.01 as well ?)
Any Bell user that took the plunge yet ?

Already flashed the new radio and built my own rom using DCD's 3.0.0 kitchen. Got a crapload of ram to boot, GPS picks up really quick, and haven't had any lock ups, still testing bluetooth but has been all positives. Granted you flash correctly, there is no risk involved and this place is littered with tutorials
Good luck...

It seems there is a lot of work going on for the 6800. I'm unfortunate enough to own a 5050 and I'm having a hard time getting information. I know that it wasn't offered with bell for very long.
My main objective is to unlock the GPS receiver (why does bell disable this stuff!?) Can someone point me in the right direction?

Everywhere I look I see people talking about problems with different radio versions...copying certain IDS...and it's got me a bit concerned, I'd rather not brick anything.
Would you mind, in step form, telling us how you flashed yours with your custom dcd there?
I'd really appreciate it.
I cannot get my new phone to get a signal after the following:
1. 2.4 unlocker (Hard-spl-mfg.exe)
2. Sprint Rom (RUU_TITAN_SPRINT_WWE_3.35.651.2_RS_TITAN_3.35.04_4350H_SPCS_AM_Ship.exe)
3. DCD Rom (DCD_3.0.1_Verizon.exe)
I believe I followed all of the instructions and upgraded my XV6800 from stock to DCD 3.01. When I finally get booted up I can never get a signal acquired. I can dial *22802 and let it connect and then I get a signal, but even then I get an error about the #777 internet access, so something is wrong. I new A-Keys and made sure all of my info was written down and correct.
Is there a way to start over from stock? Can I relock and put the stock Verizon on and try again?
Help!
did you.....
When you ran in the Sprint ROM did you let the customization run ? If so then there is the problem, as it overwrites verizon parms with the sprint. That can be fixed by getting the VZW PRL and running it in with the EPST, then set your home SID/NID also in EPST, then you should have VZW signal and not roaming, then a *228 should reprovision the rest. If you did not write down your info before you flashed then you missed a step.
I was under the assumption that the Sprint customizations don't run until I tap the welcome screen which I did not. I immediately installed DCD 3.01. I'm returning it to stock to see if I can get a signal then starting over.
Where can I get the VZW PRL? I will search now.
ok then they did not run
well I guess they did not run but maybe your PRL and provisioning data got wiped, MSID, MID, SID/NID, you know that stuff. There are stock VZW ROM images out there but my methode would fix it safer and easier as I am sure that the signal issue is a missing or wrong PRL. Go into EPST (##778) and select 'view' and then look at PRL which should show 50989 or somthing close as that is the current VZW PRL, a different number would be someone elses overwritten on yours, blank is no PRL which is also badd. then look at SID/NID where the first set should be populated. If you fix just these 2 things then you should get back on VZW signal and be able to provision it. Going with a full restore is like crushing and reconstituting your car when it only needs a wash and the ash trays emptied. If you do still want to though, the stock images do exist here.
I relocked and put the Verizon stock back on and went through the setup procedures and the phone works great back at stock.
I started the update over.
Installed the Unlocker.
Installed Sprint ROM. No customizations allowed.
Installed DCD 3.01
Signal does not acquire but will after 15 minutes or so and all is fine. As soon as I soft-reset.. no signal. The PRL is the 50989 the latest. All of my MSID and other numbers match.
Maybe it's the DCD 3.01. I don't know where to find 3.0.0.
I'll keep searching. Thanks madman34 for your help!!!!
I've noticed that after waiting for the signal 15 minutes, everything works wonderfully. I've tried changing the MIP MODE over and over but that hasn't worked.
Anyone with DCD 3.01 and the new Sprint ROM Radio able to get a signal without waiting 15 minutes?
HELP!
Yep, I get signal within 3 seconds.... Not sure what the issue is with your phone....? I am currently a Verizon user....
I am a Verizon user with DCD's 3.0.1 and upon soft reset get a signal within 2-3 seconds.
Hi guys, just to let you know I'm in the same boat at the OP with a Verizon phone and No2Chem's 5055. I'll start a new thread with a more descriptive title and see if we can get some additional help.

I've gone back to stock so that's what it says now. During my 1st call to tech support they had me go over many of the EPST settings and I think that's what it said but I was so perturbed I don't recall. I'll try again (was thinking of trying DCD's most recent as he has carrier specific ROM's) and if I loose the radio, I'll check again. Thanks for the input....
Is the fundamental issue here that your installing a SPRINT rom on a VERIZON VX6800?
Why not try installing a VERIZON rom?

Spreeway, there is no such creature that enables RevA and GPS. These are enable by using the new sprint ROM (to upgrade the radio) and then a custom rom (DCD!) for verizon.
Quick update. Resolved. It was a prl issue, rolled back to an older prl and all is well. I guess I'll have to wait for an official rom from VZW to get the latest prl but all is working now.... How odd.
I am using 50989 with 3.0.1. Now that you're back to an older prl, dial *228 NOT *22802 and then press 2 at the prompt. Update the prl OTA and see if it works this time.
Tried and failed... Yesterday, once I figured out about the older PRL, I upgraded and called for a new A key. Tech support updated the A key on their side and he had me run *228 option one and when it rebooted I had no signal. I checked the PRL and it was 51020! They must have just released a new one... Rolled back with the tech on the line, didn't need a new A key and all is well since.
I still can't figure out why any of the Nationwide PRL's drop my signal but as my plan has coast to coast no roaming, I think if I get outside of my home zone it should still pick up towers (I hope but I dont travel much).
Also, I can't figure out why I can't change the roaming options in the phone options. It currently has no check infront of 'Sprint only' or 'roam only' and if I check either I loose the cell radio. Very odd!
I know dcd a ripped a more recent radio from the Bell release... but I'm wondering... would this radio provide any benefit to Verizon users seeing as it came from a Verizon ROM? Would even work without the new PRI?

There is absolutely nothing in a radio ROM that ties it to a carrier or optimizes it for a carrier in any way over any other radio ROM.
I will post 3.37.75 here anyways.

ya... i realize there is nothing specific to the carrier but it would stand to reason that the carrier did their testing based on that specific release so it could possibly have the best results on their carrier?
I dunno.. I'm just wondering ... will try the radio you posted tho appreciate it!
I have noticed very little if any difference in signal strength between alltels stock radio and the newest i put on. Going to the new one however did enhance the ability of my gps with alltel stock radio i wasn't able to get anything in my office now i works pretty well.
So is this Radio ROM decoupled from the VZW ROM update so I can flash it and still keep the DCD 3.2.6 ROM that I already have?
I am on 3.42.50 but am willing to try this Radio ROM to see if there is any difference for VZW users but don't want to screw my phone up with VZW crap that turns off my GPS and Data and all that.
Yea, I am asking the same question: I know what dcd said earlier in this thread but I think it need reiterating: Is installing this radio going to screw up anything for those of us using dcd's ROM?
Also, I'm using 3.42.50; and this is 3.37.75... Isn't this a step backward (as far as version numbers go)? So what would be the difference?
P.S. The 3.42.50 radio rom, who/where was that originally pulled from?

i believe it was ripped from altel, but i read that radios are NOT carrier specfic
Just installing the 3.37.75 radio without the PRI won't screw anything up.
The 3.42.50 radio came from the Bell Vogue Rom.
Radios are not carrier specific.
Ok here is my question. Who controls the version numbers? Do all the radio ROMs come from HTC or do the carriers themselves edit them (not to be carrier specific, just in general..) then publish them?
I guess I just want to know if they all follow the same version tree so that 3.37.75 isn't actually newer than 3.42.40/50, but we can't tell since the # is lower.
I am curious too Why would VZW release an outdated radio.....

My guess is that when they started testing this ROM internally, that is the radio which was available.

its not an outdated radio - you cant compare the numbers of the radio from one carrier with the numbers of another radio from another carrier since all carriers arent using the same radios (even though they may be compatible with different networks)
For example, the XV6900 is newer than the XV6800 but it is far from being better and in fact has a crappier processor.

I'm using it.. works fine... I was having probs with the new one switching to 1x mode and sticking there from text messages but haven't seen it yet on this one... all radios are fairly similar I doubt you can really tell too much of a difference unless u saw something bad happening with one of them.

So Radio 3.37.75 seems in some ways more stable than 3.42.50 so I wonder about the version numbering. One real improvement is in bluetooth. With radio 3.42.50 I can't use the serial profile with a GPS receiver and headset profile at the same time. The headset profile disconnects the serial profile with in 30 - 45 seconds and if the connection recovers it's only for short bursts. With the new radio both my GPS and headset work great in parallel.
I'm also noticing faster GPS response especially on cold start. Either way I'm sticking with 3.37.75 for now over 3.42.50.
Thanks
Scott

My bad - basing info off of the sales rep in local VZ store - but I should have known better not to trust those guys (and gals)
Before I begin, I just want to let you all know that I DID use the search feature.
I'm currently running MeanRom 2.3, HBOOT 1.4, and PRL 21083.
I updated my PRL to the current version, which if i'm not mistaken is the usual fix. Maybe i'm missing something, but my 4g just won't connect. I'm in the Miami Metropolitan area, so coverage is not the issue. Please point me in the right direction.
