Hey All:
I was on the pdaPhone Home forum
( http://pdaphonehome.com/forums ) and I found this reply to a post I had made about the SD slot. It sounds like a challenge to the XDA developers to me! If anyone can do anything, it is you guys!!!
Here it is:
[The SD slot is]
more than you think it is. [I am]
new to this board, but I can tell you two things I know for certain.
One, the SD slot is not SD/IO directly, however.....
Viewtake does offer a camera than plugs into the SD slot of these phones and works very well. Takes decent pictures, with several options of picture size and type, will take 8fps video, and comes with a nice software suite. I know because I have one. Anyone who would like pics of or from it just need to ask.
Two, I happen to be a security systems installer (actual Security systems, not software or computer based) and one of the places I installed a system, I happen to get the chance to speak with someone who is part of the top eschelon of the windows mobile solutions development team. This person seemed to enjoy chatting with me about the OS and the products. In talking about the PPC PE I was told that, although nothing could be confirmed (non-disclosure agreements), that I would be VERY surprised what the SD slot on the PPC PE was capable of. I do believe that more can be done with it than is thought. Has ANYONE actually tried the install of any SD/IO devices like a Bluetooth or 802.11b SD Card?
if i were you i'd try to do a search on the subject
and you'll get plenty of useful posts
also there are many posts about cams which works for xda in the Accessories forum
of cause it's possible to make many many things which today needs sdio using just a normal sd connector
a sd connector works for ram
if a sd card have some flash apart from the stuff which take care of it's function
and both the device and the sd's non mem part have access to that mem
they can communicate writing in some files in the mem part of the sdcard
but since pretty much all new devices today come with SD IO
i doubt there is a big market for those devices which is also more complex to make then a normal SDIO which is a descriped std
we have seen bluetooth headsets which works for xda
but it's a bit of a cheat since it goes into the headset connector
and just make the analog signal bluetooth to the headset
this mean you cant use anything else then the headset
pretty much everything is possible but when there is lots of work involved and not a pile of coins in the end people dont really line up to get involved
Easily done withour SD/IO
A camera for xda could easily be developed without requiring anything special from the SD slot.
If the camera were fully self contained with the ability to write to flash mem that is also addressible from the device as a standard SD card would be... all the camera is doing is saving to sd, and the xda is reading from sd the files that the camera saved.
Pretty simple... the tricks are on the camera, not the xda.
Josh
I´ve it !
Hello,
all the story´s about a Com for a XDA / MDA & Siemens SX56 are true !

Since there's a lot of new people asking about 4gb MiniSD Cards, I figured I might as well start a new thread with places that people have purchased 4gb cards from, and had full success with, myself included.
http://www.emartbuy.co.uk/products.php?prodtypeid=20&memoryType=Mini+SD#product-450
http://search.ebay.com/_W0QQsassZblownQ2dz
http://www.mobymemory.com/proddetail.asp?prod=miniSD_4096mb_MOBY_001
Now, on the other thread, it was mentioned about SDHC which stands for SD High Capacity, does -NOT- work with the Wizards at all. These you do need to steer clear of, however, one of the card from the above retail points, do work and have been tested in real world situations and real world Wizards, by very much real people, like me. So buy from these places, if anyone else has a successful purchase, please post where you got it from, otherwise, please leave clarifications to private message. Wanna keep the thread simple and clean. Can we please get a sticky on this and I'll step in to maintain please?
Thanks, enjoy the Wizard.
-EDIT: Since I noticed there are quite a few people yelling up and down that 4gb MiniSDs do not exist, I have posted a picture of my card, OVER the 2gb 1907mb (formatted), and 2048mb (what windows sees 2GB as), limit on my Wizard. Now kindly, DO NOT REPLY TO THIS THREAD SAYING THAT 3 OF US ARE LIARS. Oh, and if you have a working 4gb card over the 2048mb mark, please take a screenshot with Screen Capture Utility, and post it here with a link, just to reaffirm that we're not crazy.
In that second link, the ebay seller....if you look at the image of the 4gig mem card, you can tell that the 4. is photoshopped. Wouldnt seem necessary if it was real, so why the fake picture? Are these really 2 gig mem cards that ppl have said are hacked to act like 4 gig cards that have a shorter life?
The Sandisk website shows 4 gb sd cards of different flavors...
Including mini sd cards

I bought, i've had it about 2 weeks without a single problem already, using over 2gb of space. And the card when you get it actually doesn't have any printing on it at all, and has barely any marking on the bottom side, just a serial and some manufacturing code. I can take a picture if somebody wants.

The 4gb miniSDs featured on their site are SDHC (Secure Digital High Capacity) or something like that, and those are INCOMPATIBLE with Wizards or any other device on the market for that matter, cept recent devices within the past, say, 6 months.
SDHC is just a FAT32 card, they work perfectly well with a Wizard... You can't get more than 2GB on FAT16.
Dude, I plugged one of these (Transcend 4GB SDHC) into my Cingular 8125 and it didn't even know it was there. It appears that Cynagen is right.
My Wizard didn't even detect the my 2GB card untill I did s soft reset, they are very picky about picking up anything in the miniSD slot.

so where is a place where we can buy them that we wont get ripped off.
Well, I really only know of http://www.mobymemory.com/ but don't know what countries they ship to. I normally wait till new media appear on somewhere like expansys as they are reputable and reliable.
www.expansys.com
There are real 4GB cards out there but it is hard to tell if you are being ripped off or not...
i got mine from mobymemory, too. i got it within a 1 week after ordering (to germany) and it works perfectly in my wizard. it is quite slow though. at least i have 4gigs now.
Sounds good, I am really tempted at that price... Payed exactly that for my 2GB card about six months ago.
I have one on the way after ordering a SDHC from MemorySuppliers. I wound up ordering one from an ebayer called Quality Rams. $89 no shipping charge.
According to Memory Suppliers the Transend Card they sell another non SDHC card that will work priced at $79
Hey all, now I know jack stick when it comes to these devices, I've only recently bought it! I have the XDA Mini S (9100 as far as I know? Correct me if I'm wrong), and I bought a 4gb card off ebay for £32 from the USA, think it was about £25 without postage - ie, very cheap.
It works when connected to my pc, my friends XDA IIs, and my maths tutors XDA IIs (with the MiniSD to SD adaptor), however my Mini S doesn't like it. I managed to access it once, but now it just doesn't seem to know it's there, are there any tips on what I can do to get it working? I updated the firmware off the o2 site, I'm running:
ROM - 2.21.4.1 WWE ?
ROM date - 03/09/2006
Radio version - 02.07.10
Protocol version - 413.1.03
ExtROM version 2.21.4.101
(whatever that means )
Any tips on how I can get it working would be great. Thanks , Dom.

Yeah, try formatting the cards. I just received my two 4 GB Mini SD from mobymemory.com and when I tried to use them into my device, they won't recognize it but after formatting them it worked perfectly. I've read people complaining about speed but I'm happy with the speed as well.
I'm using one on my Universal and the other on Wizard.
I tried that and it still doesn't seem to work
I just tried putting it in then doing a soft reset. I need to try someone elses minisd card, to make sure it's not my device at fault. Would be a bummer if it is my card slot that's duffed!
I'll have a test of someone elses when I can find someone with a minisd card and let you know!
Thanks for the advice so far, Dom
Update on Quality Rams
They sent me the wrong card. I received a HC card, enen though their eBay add specifically said it was for the Cingular 8125. I got this tip directly from the forum on the HTC site.
They gave me no hassle in accepting a return.
Carrying on from before, the 4gb card works fine in my mates phone (Nokia 6280), and his memory card works perfectly in my 9100. So there must be a problem with my firmware being unable to recognise the 4gb card. Any ideas what firmware I can try? (stock is o2 XDA Mini S firmware, with the above - four posts up - version)
What firmware are you using KarmaNP?
Thanks.

I'm currently using Faria's latest 3.3 on my wizard with 2.47 radio and
Helmi's CB on my Universal with 1.14 radio.
Hope this helps
I just downloaded the 8mb pool rom from here:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=291806
Ran the romupdateutility
ROM version is still 2.21.4.1 WWE
ROM date - 03/09/2006
Radio version - 02.07.10
Protocol version - 413.1.03
the ExtROM version has disappeared. So everything except ExtROM is the same?
Am I missing something blindingly obvious to people in the know or is there a problem? When I ran farias romupdateutility it showed that it was v3.3, but on the screen showing which firmware it will update from and to, it said v1.2 (from), and blank (to)? Is this the problem? I also tried to update to Radio version 2.47, and that didn't work at all, it had the blank update to, thing, again, and the phone turned off as the percentage screen appeared, and I had to remove the battery to get it back up and running. I feel so stupid!
And finally. Sorry if these are really dumb questions, I know how annoying newbies and their dumb questions are!
PS - memory card is still not recognised.

try installing wmstorage, insert your 4gb card, open wmstorage select sd card and activate, now connect your device to pc as a mass storage device and format there the drive once it is recognized. format it as fat32 with 512byte cluster and sector size..

Dont think it will plug into the MICRO SD Slot of the Hermes
well....does your hermes have an sd slot? nice find but not for the hermes....at least that model.
they do even have a version called sdg-811
look here : http://www.spectec.com.tw/sdg810.htm
hehe, look at that carefully. it is still only for SD and miniSD, not for microSD. You can put only microSD card inside adapter to have your external memory still inside - for navigation program, but final product is still only miniSD. correct me, if I am wrong...

Looking at the ad, it implies the package includes a micro-sd conversion card.

nope it would look stupid and will probably break off. Think about it. Big SD to small MICRO SD....hmmmmm
I think that sinmae is correct - the product requires a SD or miniSD slot, but to compensate for the loss of the (mini)SD slot, it provides a microSD slot to put a microSD memory card into.
Such a shame, since I just sent my Garnin GPS 20SM back to Garmin yesterday for a RMA - it's not charging the phone properly. It seems silly to have to soft-reset my 8525 to have to get it to charge, when a USB cable connected to my PC works flawlessly every time. Oh well, here's hoping it was just a defective unit. *crosses my fingers*

@JoeVulture: most USB chargers wont work with the TyTn's due to the way HTC set up the mini-USB plug (there's loads of threads on it).
What a heap of crap! I will stick to my Rikaline bluetooth.
Just when I was gonna give up on waiting for a kaiser.
Hi,
I would like to ask, if somebody does know, if Micro SD WIFI exists and where to buy it. Is Micro SD same as Micro SDIO? I am really confused.

Spectec should be coming out with MicroSD WiFi shortly. You can preorder it on the Expansys website.
As for MicroSD and MicroSDIO, read here.

But you could have a long wait.
The Spectec card has been on pre-order for a long time at expansys, and remember that it'll take the place of any memory card that you may have installed. And they're going to be expensive if/when they do appear.
It would be great if they have a wifi card with atleast 2gig also in it
Hoping it will not cost too much!
i dont why they dont just produce one that goes in the usb port then sits all along side of device so as not to stick out, and even replace the battery cover with it for extra strength! or has this been done?

Don't think the Dual (or any/many windows mobile devices) can act as a USB host though. It'd be a huge power draw though, maybe half your battery life?
It cant act as a usb host unfortunately. Its a long shot but i would personally hold off for a couple of months and see how this WIFI project unfolds before investing in something as expensive as these microsd wifi cards will be.
To answer an earlier comment about it being good if they started making micro sd wifi cards with built in memory, its been done before with normal sd cards, only trouble is that HTC devices dont like them!!
Spectec Mini SD WiFi Card, SDW-822
Hello all,
It is possible to buy it,
check this website
http://www.expansys.nl/p.aspx?i=125665
or
http://www.google.nl/search?hl=nl&q=Spectec+Mini+SD+WiFi+Card,+SDW-822&btnG=Zoeken&meta=lr=lang_nl
If you buy and test let me know please
do you know the different about MINI SD and MICRO SD???
Mini SD are bigger than Micro SD, so you can't use Mini SD on the dual.
3s this for real?
what exactly do these micro sd cards do? 3m just curious..
Im installing my tablet in my cars dash,
Im trying to find a Micro sd card extension cable so that I can easily connect a memory card to the tablet without taking the whole dash apart.
The dash kit I bought came with a couple regular SD extension cables which do me no good. I have no luck searching for these cables online. All I can find are wholesalers and I dont need 1,000 of them.
Anyone know where to find one? Maybe they are called something different than micro sd extension cable or something.
Wow
the only SD extension cables I've seen have been really pricy. I've never seen micro SD extension cables.
I know this isn't what you're looking for, but the app Wifi filetransfer / wifi file explorer pro will at least let you transfer files to the card/tablet while it's installed.
Not perfect, but better then nothing.
Hi,
I'm currently looking for the same thing as I installed my old HTC HD2 in my car and need to access easily the microsd...
I'll keep you updated if I find anything.
As said above, Wifi File Explorer Pro works great. I use it on my phone often.
Sent from my HTC Flyer using XDA Premium App.
Or sugarsync or dropbox , etc. much easier than a cable.............
I ended up trying the "software data cable" app and it worked really well.
I had been using drop box for ebooks, apk's, music etc.. but larger files took way to long to upload, I had no idea there was better ways.
Thanks
That app is far more clunky than ES File Explorer for Android, but it gets the job done.
Hi, I'm looking also this extension card cable and I've seen this:
http://www.befr.ebay.be/itm/Micro-S...aphy_MemoryCardReaders_RL&hash=item19d0051fdf
Do you think it can help?
it's not for a table, it's too avoid disassemble the device.
Thnks.
wow good find. Im also going to install my view in my card. I dont need this for that though because I am going to make it removable, though that thing is pretty cool.
You can get better and cheaper here....... if you are willing to buy 1000 at a whack...
http://www.alibaba.com/showroom/micro-sd-card-extension-cable.html
I finally found mine here:
http://www.jqsabers.com/parts/
You have to scroll down to find it.
Yes don't know how I went here as it is a Star Wars fan site
Ordered one extension cable, works great on my HD2!
Thanks for the link...gonna dashmount my old Sensation 4G as a media player (otherwise useless since T-Mobile changed their roaming policies). I'm ordering two...because I'll probably destroy the first one while trying to adapt it to let me use full-size SD cards as the media.
