3rd Touch pro with keyboard issues - Touch Pro CDMA

Ok, so I'm now on my 3rd HTC Touch Pro (Sprint) -- the other 2 got replaced by Sprint, and this one arrived today and stopped working after 3 hours. The symptoms are just that the keys don't work. The back light turns on when i flip it open, but the keys do nothing. Like i said this is the third one that has done this.
Is this common? do i have ****ty luck? Am i a moron that is doing something wrong?
All I did before it stopped working was install PocketShield, .NET framework, and Resco file explorer.
I did a reset Via "Clear Storage" and that changed nothing.
I then tried different roms and still nothing.
any ideas?

I went through three as well. This fourth ones been going really well, but eventually all TP Keyboards come to an end. It's a very common problem unfortunately

I am on my second TP phone and it arrived with a DOA keyboard. Some quick googling got it fixed.
Squeeze the keyboard at the spacebar firmly, then a soft reset and whalaa. My problem was solved.
I guess it seats the ribbon cable for the KB back into place. I only had to do it once and it has worked ever since. I'm sure the symptom will come back but I'm not too worried if it is that simple of a fix.

Mine is fine after two months of solid usage. It's good to know a simple fix could work if it does go out on me. Great info around these forums.

The pressing the spacebar tip is awsome, it worked for me! I got a used Touch Pro on ebay for around $45 dollars that had keyboard problems, it works fine now! Thanks Phxslayer!

I have noticed the trend that some carriers have alot of problems with the keyboard, and then some carriers don't. But the pressing down on the spacebar trick has worked for many. But judging from the past, even the phones people are getting for replacements are refurbished phones, and they have the same problem. Just be careful

A couple of new issues have popped up.

I have the Sprint Touch Pro and have had it since it first came out. Recently I have had 2 issues pop up.
1) After a while TF3D won't open up emails or allow me to type new emails/texts. The solution is a soft reset. I find my self doing that 5-8 times a day.
2) The physical keyboard sometimes stops working. Occasionally a soft reset fixes it. Sometimes I have to reset a few times for that to start working.
My guess is that there is a Hard Reset in my near future (damn). Anyone else experiencing these issues?
I had the second issue happen to me as well as the mic not picking up sound. I took it in and apparently one of the ribbons was messed up. They replaced it free of charge for me. So I'd go into a store and tell them what's up.
what is weird is that the screen will still rotate when the keyboard slides out. Must be a different connector for that.
If they don't replace it I might hold out for the Palm Pre.
Yeah. sounds just like the problem I was having. It would come and go. What really sucked about it was that it would be working just fine and in the middle of an email stop working and I'd have to finish the email with the touch screen. that was the hardest part.
Thanks for the suggestion Notasevil, Sprint is replacing the unit. Hope I get a new one and not a refurb, but beggars can't be choosers. It'll be nice to have a clean install. Perhaps my redfly will start working with it again.
Hope everything works out for you.
*Edit
And I've noticed a few other post on other forums and heard from other people that they are having this same issue so it might be a manufacturer defect.
I have the same problem but it seems to be an issue with arcsoft. The program freezes the whole phone for about 2 mins. Then the keyboard comes back once the messages sync up properly. Its really starting to piss me off because its to the point its just faster to soft reset and I'm doing it 3-5 times a day now.
ive had problems with the email too...i got my touch pro in december..so it doesnt affect just the older ones..

touch screen "kinda" failure?

well i have an odd problem, one one section of my screen doesn't pick up touches, only the area where the "C" is on the keyboard...its annoying due to thats where the OK buttons are...
i can still navigate sense i can use the track ball..
anyone else have this issue, or something similar?
Try wiping back to factory if stock or reflash the rom if rooted?
I had a weird issue with the touch screen on condemned 18.3 where on the lockscreen trying to drawdown the slider and then draw the pattern, it would freak out and glitch and not follow my finger at all and take several tries to get the pattern correct.
I then wiped and flashed the latest 4.0 GSB and haven't had any issues since.
That's not quite a touch screen failure as yours is, but I thought it would help as an example as something gone wrong and how I was able to remedy it.
i've tried flashing a few different roms, went from cs18.3 to a 2.1 sense rom, back to the latest gsb. it appears its must be a problem with the digitizer...
really sucks, i have to wait to april to upgrade this phone...
might be on craigslist looking for a cheap droid 1...
Ah man, that's unfortunate. Probably wouldn't be worth it to try to replace the screen/digitizer either. Yeah, that's probably your best bet, looking to get another phone. That's how I got my Eris, from craigslist. Great way to go about doing so.
Good luck to ya.
I actually have the same problem and something leads me to believe that an update is causing this. I had it bad a few weeks ago (can't press C, V or X - though I can swipe to the keys sometimes) and then I got a few market updates for Handcent, SuperUser, and something else which then cleared it up for a few days. Then I got more updates and it's back to the failing keyboard!
I really don't know how to pin point it and I haven't done any resetting or testing yet, but I have like gut feeling something is wrong with the software, not the touchscreen since someone else is having this problem.
Mine has been failing little by little. Im now down to the top right corner, bottom left, and bottom middle not responding. It hard to even get the apps drawer to open. It all started with the letter C with me too. Just gets worse.
****, my whole qwerty row doesn't work, neither does the trackball. Upgraded to a SGS2, but I still tinker with the ol' eris.
mine moved, it started working fine for a few days, then just a smaller section to the left of C doesn't work, only really effects when i have an "OK" to press...but track ball still works and typing is so much easier now.
my wife thinks its because i dropped my phone that it started working again
I know this thread is a couple of months old, but...
There's an area on mine at the top right below the notification pull-down that appears to be dead. I'm thinking it's because I've dropped it about 10 times, but nothing looks wrong with the screen otherwise. I've thought about buying a replacement screen for about 15 bucks, but I'll be able to upgrade at the end of March, so I'm really just thinking about holding off (though if the new screen/digitizer worked, it'd make for a good mp3 player with the wifi script).
Digitizer is going bad. Same exact problem happened to mine. I replaced it myself and it works perfect. I found how to videos on youtube and bought a digitizer for about $37 online. Only took a half hour to tear apart and replace. On the difficulty level, I'd give it a 6 or 7.

YMMV.
Someone gave me an Eris that had digitizer problems along the lower left side of the screen (in portrait orientation). I bought a replacement digitizer ($22 iirc), installed it, and it worked perfectly - for about the first 30 minutes. Then, the problem re-appeared in exactly the same location with the new digitizer.
Same behavior for a variety of stock or developer ROMs, so highly doubtful that it was a "software problem". Very very odd - the chip that does the capacitive sensing is on the flex circuit attached to the digitizer, so it gets replaced when you replace the digitizer; I suppose that the signals that come off the mini-connector between the digitizer assembly and the phone's mobo are only power, ground, and I2C signals.
But there you go; taken all those observations together, I'd suspect that I had a problem on the phone's motherboard which was thermally dependent.
Despite my (negative) experience, the odds are still in favor that a digitizer replacement will fix the problem; but there is an outside chance that it won't.
just sayin',

[Q] Letters on Keyboard Dock not working, have tried 3 different docks...

So I ended up getting two keyboard docks in the mail, tried a friends dock, and none worked properly with my Prime. I'm starting to think there may be an issue with the tablet itself, or I'm doing something wrong setting it up.
The top three issues...
-None of the letter keys have ever worked.
-The top row buttons work here and there
-The mouse worked for a few seconds on one of them, then went away.
-LONG delays for the dock to be registered once I connect the two. It can take as long as 10 minutes for it to detect.
Here's a few things I've done so far...
-Dock and Tablet fully charged
-Factory Data Wiped already
-Undocked/Docked multiple times for a connection.
-Restarted it with it docked, also undocked and then put it in
-Android Version updated to 4.0.3
-Build Number - 9.4.2.11-20120117
I'm also prompted with the message "change to asus keyboard to keep consistency with hardware keyboard". So I went into the settings, keyboard and input, and changed it from thumb keyboard to the asus keyboard, but I still don't get anything.
Any ideas?
Yep, that is a known issue and already a couple of topics on here.
Even on this page is one.
No solution so far.
I guess (and me, too) have to send it in for repair
Sent from my HTC Desire using XDA App
Faulty keyboard dock - UK
My prime arrived this morning and the dock hasn't worked since the moment I turned it on.
I have also tried everything MinustheOh mentioned, other than trying different docks as I dont have any others at my disposal.
I purchased mine from eBuyer.com in the UK. I have spoke to them and they said I can change it or get a full refund. I mentioned I didn't really want to return the Prime as the tablet itself appears fine, so they put me onto to Asus to see if I replace just the keyboard.
Asus said it was possible but said it could take up to 3 weeks. Seeing as the UK version comes as '32GB Tablet + Dock', I didn't really want to change the keyboard and get a new one with different serial numbers incase any other problems occur in the future.
I phoned eBuyer again and got a full refund, they pay for a courier to collect it tommorrow. I then plan to get one from PC world on Wednesday when they are back in stock. Should I then get another faulty keyboard, I can walk in and change it the same day.
Overall - Gutted. Absolutely gutted.
Update - 5 hours later and that keyboard dock has randomly started working. How do I explain that to the tech support? Still gonna send it back, for £500 I want a device to work from the word go!

Issues with dock

I have this issue where when you pop the tablet into the dock either:
a) It will not recognise that it is plugged into the dock; OR
b) It will recognise the dock but the keyboard and/or trackpad will not work
It takes several tries of ejecting the tablet and re-inserting it before both work.
Anyone else have this problem?
Have you checked that the contacts on either the dock or the tablet aren't dirty.
I only just got my dock less than an hour ago, so I haven't really tested it extensively. So far, it's been pretty good. The only problem I have is with locking and unlocking capabilities.
The dock has a lock button on the top right, and it works perfectly. However, it won't unlock the tablet.
The workaround to this is to go to settings and uncheck MobileDock Battery Savings Mode under ASUS Customized Settings. This allows the dock to wake up the tablet by pressing any key, which I guess might come at the cost of battery life.
So I suppose I'm looking for a way to lock and unlock the tablet with just that lock key on the tablet, while keeping the Battery Savings mode on. Why put it there if we can't even unlock the tablet without costing battery life?
I'm having the same problem as well. My keyboard doesn't register has connected sometimes and sometimes the battery says zero. all the keys don't work except the top row. the mouse doesn't work. everything is crap so far. they better fix this...
I had the same problem with mine at first. I tried it out with three keyboard docks, all the software updated, tried rooting it/unrooting, factory wiped it, the whole nine yards.
Then I bought another Prime because I finally found a Champagne Gold one and was ready to sell my Grey tablet, and the new one worked perfectly fine with all of the docks.
It's an issue with the tablet. My guess is some flaw with the connectivity of it. Your best bet is to send your tablet it in for repairs from Asus, I'm sending mine out Monday and once it's fixed I'll be posting it on EBay.

I am having the same problem with the dock. Like you, i had tried wipe data, manual update through sdcard, factory reset and nothing works.
I was hoping the .13 firmware will solve this problem but i am still waiting for the WW release. Anyone whom updated to the .13 US release can confirm if the dock issue still exists?
I believe that its a firmware issue because "sometimes" by checking and unchecking the Mobiledock battery saving mode, i am able to "wake up" the keyboard. But it will stop working a few minutes later.
As mentioned above, I have found out today that it is the tablet's problem. I've gone in to memoryexpress by where I live and those guys know their stuff. They've seen it before and they said it's something that can't be repaired. So everything with the keyboard problem needs to send it in for repair (receive a new one), or refund/exchange.
I tried my tablet with 3 brand new docks, all with the same problem. I'm glad I had the ipr on my tablet and it covers broken tablets.
I wonder how many people tried connecting their docks without removing the little plastic guards on the bottom of the tablet?

I don't think people are THAT stupid. The dock doesn't go in without taking it off. But I don't doubt your point there... we do have idiots amongst us
It OFF? there are 3 one on the connector itself and 2 more for the tabs on the end that line it up

I don't understand what you mean by 3 on on the connecter :S All I know is that there's covers for all of them and I took them out.

Strange keyboard behavior

I finally got around to buying a dock/keyboard and got mine today but I'm seeing some really strange things when using it.
I'm wondering if anybody has a clue what is happening to me.
Sometimes I connect the dock and they keyboard/mouse works perfectly. Other times, only the keyboard works. Sometimes, the mouse begins working after some time (like 30s); sometimes it doesn't work at all. Sometimes I connect the dock and neither the keyboard nor the mouse works.
I thought it may be a short in the connector, but I've seen things that suggest this is not the case. For example, I can press the lock key on the keyboard to lock the tablet, and then when I unlock the keyboard no longer works and its battery shows as empty. Other times, I can lock/unlock it with no problem at all.
I've tried wiggling the dock and stressing it in all directions to see if I can cause it to malfunction but once it works, it works forever until I either remove the dock or lock the tablet.
I normally use SwiftKey Tablet but switched to the asus keyboard hoping it would help, of course it didn't.
So are there any thoughts? wtf is going on with my brand new keyboard?
Also, fwiw, I know there is a mouse on/off key. That is not my problem.
Update: I cleared data on ASUS keyboard and it seems to have solved the problem. Not 100% sure yet but I haven't had any issues since.
I have the same issues. A reboot solves the problem. Factory reset solves the problem. Connecting the dock like 10 times solves the problem.
BUT.....
after a night of standby, the problems re-appear.
I've sent in my prime for RMA for this issues 2 times. 1st time they didn't do anything. Only re-connect some cable that apparently come loose on its own (****ty build quality)
I hope they fix is this time...
Unfortunately, clearing data on asus keyboard was an illusory solution. The problem came back.
I also noticed another issue. Sometimes when the keyboard seems to be functioning properly, it isn't actually charging the tablet. Talk about a weird issue. I noticed that when I'm having issues though, I can force kill the asus keyboard and redock and it works again until the tablet sleeps.
I did a factory reset on the thing, hoping it would help. Of course it didn't. To throw salt in the wounds, I didn't realize my app backup transfer failed so I lost everything. fml.
So anyway, the damn thing works probably 1/15 tries. It's so bad I packed the thing back up in the box and am considering returning it. The keyboards are so hard to find though I am not sure if I can get another.
Please let me know when you get it back from RMA. If they fix it for you I will send mine in.

umm...but the keyboard?
Also, my son dropped my prime and cracked the screen so I have to send it in for repair. I'm wondering if I should tell them about the keyboard issue while I'm at it.
You had the mobo on the tab replaced, right? Not the PCB in the keyboard?

Keyboard is working fine now.
The RMA only sais that they replaced the motherboard, not the keyboard pcb.
Wifi is working again, had to reset the router (even though all other devices were working fine).
Noticed a new LCD mura though.. so I'm sending it back again and claim my money back.
