Are we going to root the Android 2.2?
We could use some of that Flash!
Release on Android Developer!
I know someone who has it rooted already, but on a droid. I dont know what exploits will work for the version for the eris, as it will be different. The droid 2.2 (and root)hasnt been released sure to a google sign in issue, making the phone useless with no contacts or activation.
anyway, yes it will be rooted.
All in due time kids, the SDK was literally released about 12 hours ago. It would be silly to expect a workable rooted 2.2 rom.

That would be complete Kaos to release a 2.2 rom in 12 hours
1) Eris wont support flash, its arm6 and at this time the flash libraries are arm7.
2) We won't have it officially on the Eris, there wont be any rooting it. It will have to be ported or compiled for th eris, and installed on a pre rooted phone.
3) There is not any one who "rooted" this on the droid, all droid installed are after market or developer installs, and are installed on prerooted phones.
You sure Eris won't get 2.2? That makes me sad... Looks like I might end up rooting my phone so I can get it.
Damn......I was looking forward to getting the 2.2 update for my Eris!
Wait a minute....I am not rooted.....so does that mean I will get it or update my phone?

2.2 wont be sent to our phones. we wont even get the update, rooted or not. the only way to get it is to root your phone and put on the ported rom.
Why won't the Eris get the update? I get sick of hearing that companies decide to leave like 3 phones off the list and update everything else.
What does the new update entail anyway? Is that the "froyo" update people keep mentioning on blogs and news pages?

Its business. Why keep updating an out of production product? When if they stop, many users will buy a newer product.

I didn't realize the Eris was out of production. I only got my Eris in January.
That would explain it though. Not that I'm going to switch, you guys have any recommendations on another android phone? I heard people are loving the Nexus One.
I got my eris in january as well.. I am going to ride it out, until I get the new every 2 upgrade discount or whatever... Im running 2.1v3 now, and have nothing but time to wait until it's rooted, or not, doesn't really matter lmao.. A newer, more powerful phone will more than likely be free in a year and a half anyways... So i'm good. I wouldn't go spend money on another phone right now, unless you are just that much of a tech junkie lmao
Idk if I can root my phone.
I have some f*cked up version on mine that came though Insurion and I don't know what to do with it. It works fine but I would like root for 2.1 OTA running 1.49 HBOOT. (Ya, I know, it's weird huh.)
There is a lot more to be excited about 2.2 than flash

this man, he speaks the truth.
such a shame
how verizon has treated eris owners. it is capable of far more than what verizon released it with. if they would have maxed it out and marketed it, it would probably be one of the top cell phone sellers. and verizon should continue to support this device considering of when they took it out of the stores was recently. they should be required to support it for 2 years after it was pulled for the customers who purchased it at the last minute so they will be taken care of through their 2 year contract. dont have us sign 2year contracts if your not gonna support the product for the period of our contract.

1. If you don't mind me asking how exactly did Verizon treat Eris owners so poorly?
2. Just because Verizon has stopped selling the Eris does not mean they wont continue to support peoples hardware issues.
3. They don't owe you anything, lots of people buy cell phones when they are end of life. All those smart phones & feature phones that you see as "free" or less than $100 are more than likely EOL.
I'm wondering, once Google releases the source code for 2.2 and we get some roms cooking, will they be on the new boot loader so us people with 1.49 S-ON or one of the unrootable leaks can root to a new rom?
I am on my 4th replacement Eris (trackball issues, and charging port issues). It's mint, and I take good care of it, so it's not that I am abusing it by any means, but my charging/usb port is on its way out. I've had to exchange 2 others because of the well known trackball issues.
So, Verizon has offered me early upgrade pricing on any phone of my choice! Question is, which one is closest to my Eris (size) and feel. When the Eris came out, I admit, I liked the way it looked, and felt compare to the Droid 1.
Of course, I rooted it, since there is no way I could stand being stuck on 2.1, with Sense. I really want the Nexus S, but I'm on Verizon, and not able to move (company phone). I would prefer the most "google" experience, but if it's an HTC phone with Sense, I can live. I'll probably just root it anyway. So, here are my requirements:
* FAST!! (After having an Eris for so long, I yearn for speed!!)
* Most Vanilla Google like
* "smaller" form factor like the Eris
* Good dev community for rooting (like the Eris)
Actually, now that I think of it, my requirement for being Vanilla, is not really a requirement, since I can always root it
Here are some of the phones I have thought about:
* DINC (but, should I go for something even faster, or wait?)
* Samsung Facinate
* Droid 2 Global (don't really like the form factor, but 1.2Ghz is nice!!)
I don't really think there is much choice. Although I am a diehard Mac OS X guy (Mostly because it's Unix), the iPhone just doesn't do it for me anymore. I like Android widgets, and the notifications too much, and the iPhone sucks at those (or doesn't have it)
Any chance of the Nexus S coming to Verizon? I like that the Nexus phones are always on the bleeding edge of Android releases, which is what I really want the most
So, what does everyone recommend? Wait? Get a new phone now? Replace the Eris for the 5th time?
Can you wait out for the vzw Thunderbolt?
Personally I would get another Eris and wait for the new phones to come out. BTW next time, post questions like this in the Q&A or General sections.

J/K...I'd wait for the new LTE phones to come out before getting one. They just leaked that the LTE pricing will be the same 29.99 for unlimited.
dinc is too old now. almost at the end of its life and so is the droid x. Samsung has horrible support as you can see by kaos having to go over to their forums to help them get froyo and its near the end of its life. Most of the fast phones that verizon has have a EOL in march. The d2g is the same processor as the x and d2 but overclocked. i had a x for 29 days and hated it. and that thing ran all day at 1.35. If you can handle the 4.3" screen wait for the thunderbolt. My experience with the x and looking at the rest of verizons going ons has made me realize i am leaving them. I have determined that its time to move to a mobile carrier that has similar views that i do in how handsets should be ran. That is why i am switching to tmobile and getting the G2. Tmobile is owned by a german company and for some reason the Europeans seem to be more accepting of all things unix. They have a good relationship with google and they have released 4 vanilla pure android phones. no one else has released any that i can think of.
I would get the DINC but only if you can without having to use your upgrade.
Currently on my 7th one, nd verizon has yet to offer me this. Just get the iphone, much more reliable

track ball going out, screen unresponsive, phone restarting randomly... i'm about to be on my third.
The build quality was very uneven on the Eris. Most of the ones people are getting now have already failed in the past and will fail again. If you're on your first one like I am (over 12 months now) count yourself lucky and just ride it out. Unless things change I'll be changing carriers after this contract is up as it is anyway.
Do the verizon trade in credit thing. Eris is worth 132 to verizon. Then buy some used phone online (I recently got a mint droid for 130, I'm pleasantly surprised by how much faster it is over the eris and has a great dev community and super easy to root and is still supported by verizon. For now) and wait till the thunderbolt, bionic, x 2, droid 3, or the Inc 2 comes out and get that and use your promo pricing

Replace it with another Eris; then wait for the Thunderbolt (SVDO) or the Droid Bonic - or jump ship like me and just get an iPhone. *shrug* /2c
I only read your first post and haven't read anyone else's answers. IMHO, Either go for the Incredible or wait for the next HTC Android phone on Verizon, the Incredible's successor, whatever it will be. Shouldn't be too much longer, but I understand it's hard to be patient.

Looks like everybody in the DX2 community will have to wait for an AOSP ICS from somebody!
Discuss!
EDIT: Apparently it's not official according to some XDA user's opinions, but I'm pretty sure it is official. In that list they didn't only mention 4G LTE devices, they also listed the Incredible 2 and the Rhyme which are both 3G devices. And also, the DROID Charge is 4G and it's left off the list. It's an assumption but I believe the list to be complete. Motorola and Verizon have no obligation to upgrade to ICS, even if the DX2 is within the 18 month upgrade period. Their 18 month upgrade period never stated how far upgrades would go and it has been upgraded multiple times already. I honestly don't mind if everybody gets their hopes up for Motorola/Verizon to release ICS for the DX2 because it's only going to let you down. If I'm wrong, fine. That's good for everybody with a DX2! I don't know why people have to come to this thread and act like hard-asses to get their point across. I was only releasing some news.
well the Verizon press release states that it is a list of 4G devices that will be upgraded.
then again the dinc2 isn't 4G, right?
I think that's the phone I should have gotten instead of this X2
Well, ever since I got my tablet and the ICS update on it, I haven't been doing much on my DX2 anyway. Shoot, I might just go back to a cheap flip phone.
Really liked the DX2, but I just don't understand why Motorola kicked it to the curb!
Yeah dude, that's just the 4g phones that are getting upgraded. Haven't said which 3g phones are getting it yet.
Sent from my MB870 using XDA
Frankly I'm not surprised. I have a feeling there isn't enough RAM available in the X2 for an ICS install. My phone is always starved for RAM.
Don't want to bring any hope into this, but I'll be using something called a brain here for this. These are devices confirmed as of now to get it and on the Moto Upgrade site still lists the devices that are being evaluated to get it.
This is really just VZW rehashing what phone manufacturers have already announced, except they are directing this specifically at their customers. Nothing here we didn't already know, really. Of course they are going to try to get it going on the 4G devices first, that is this year's breadwinner.
I'm kinda over ICS now. lol
Yeah seems like it was all a pipe dream. Development is pretty quiet now but it's ok I'm content with CM7
CM7 DX2
**** it....
I think its the Verizon way of saying they aren't bothering upgrading any 3G devices. They just spent Billions building a 4G network that is sitting there doing next to nothing (except crashing every now and then). They need to get folks migrated to 4G ASAP.

1. The article says:
"We will continue to update this list as additional details become available throughout the year. Also, follow @VZWNews on Twitter for additional upgrade announcements."
2. The only Moto devices on the list are those that Moto confirmed a while back. I highly doubt Motorola is doing "planning and evaluation" on a bazillion devices just to ditch each and everyone of them.
Calm down gentlemen and ladies. Let's not get our panties in a bunch! Finally got a chance to say that...

when comparing them in the store i liked the DX2's camera better (and larger screen), should've took the warning it tried to give me when the first phone the employee gave me froze and didn't come back on lol
wow I just read the article fully and noticed bionic gets it, well that's just salting the wound... good thing non-commercial developers make better ****ing firmware than the official ones do anyway =(
I received a call just awhile ago from a Verizon rep offering me an upgrade to a 4g phone. At first i thought it was related to the other number on my account which has a March 2012 upgrade date but she corrected me and told me it was for my Droid X2 and wouldn't effect the other lines upgrade. I accepted the Nexus seeing how it gets fastest upgrades and support(Total opposite of this phone). Was wondering if anyone else has gotten this type of call, may be Verizon trying to repair customer relations from Motorola lying to the DX2 owners about unlocked boot loaders. I think the complaints are finally working.

When was your original upgrade date? That will add some perspective. Mine is in April 2013. If yours was close, like in 3-4 months, then it seems reasonable. However, I find it interesting that they specifically called you and informed you. Since this is my first phone, I dunno how early upgrades work and if that is how they usually inform people.
Also, did you regularly complain and/or request replacement phones? That may have also caused this to happen.

I had an EnV touch (yah know one of the worst phones ever) last time. It broke 6 times and they REFUSED to let me get something different. My upgrade I think would be January or Feb. if they are still doing the early upgrade stuff. I think this may just be luck on the OP's side of things. I would not expect anyone else getting this, bootloader locked whatever they don't care.
The least the OP could do is ask why their giving this to him.

Yea, the EnV Touch was discontinued after like 6 months because of all these issues. Touch screen wouldn't work half the time, speakers blew and plenty of other things. The best part was they had so much stock that even the new ones they gave out were faulty and they threw the used ones out (at least when I went in their plenty of times).
I love this phone but if their gonna offer an early upgrade to one guy they gotta offer it to everyone lol. Something you learn in school god'damnit. (sarcasm to the fullest) . Though I would take a new phone over this if given the option.

Definitely wondering this myself. Don't get me wrong, I've been pretty content with the stock phone, but if I could upgrade early I certainly wouldn't be complaining.
I've called Verizon every few days for the past three months begging for an early upgrade!!! I like my X2,but the locked bootloader thing killed Moto for me. The BS that Verizon where the ones stopping them from unlocking the bootloader is soo childish after promising to do so.
What drive me insane is that the phone I want the MOST is the Droid Razr Maxx, but since it's a Moto phone I won't do it. Galaxy Nexus or Htc Rezound.

I've been offered early upgrades on both of the phones on my account. I was offered an early upgrade on one, which is a not a smart phone, after having owned it for only 3 months. I was offered an upgrade on my DX after having owned it for about 6 months. At the time, they didn't offer to grandfather my account rates, but offered to "update" my contract. The update would have put me at spending about 50 dollars more per month, so I declined.
You can call and ask if you have a promo allowing you to upgrade early. Sometimes you do and they don't tell you until you ask. Happened to me. Also, if you call and complain about the phone they may offer you a 4g phone to upgrade early with. That also happened with me

I've been offered an early upgrade twice this month on both lines that have the DX2. Problem is to get a suitable replacement, like a razr for the wife that she wants and a GNex or Rezound for me is that I have to spend $400-$600 still to upgrade. No thanks, I'll keep calling and swapping them, I'm not going to spend that kind of money on a phone, I'll wait and do my upgrade when they're free. Tired of paying so much for phones.

So funny!
that sucks! but not like it matters to me. how many ics roms do we already have that work almost perfect.
Moto Sucks !
ICS is likely a no-go now since next Android version will be out before the end of this year along with brand new devices. Since Sprint has only one Moto phone, who will really care about Photon !
Typical tactics by the vendors and carriers to keep their devices as close to the 18 months mark as possible. Apparently, carriers are expected to update the software within first 18 months of release only. By end of the Q4, it will be almost 18 months.
Funny that officially, the only Moto device that got ICE is the Xoom tablet ... and Google own Motorola !
Time to seriously think about Windows 8 Phone. It is also shaping up to be an interesting OS.
Thank you so much motorola for announcing this AFTER getting the 2.3.5 update, so not only are you not giving me ICS when you said, I can't get it myself either. I liked this phone, but this really pushed me over the edge. HTC or Samsung next.
Honestly it doesn't matter to much. At least now they are in development, so hopefully we can get a soak test. Then we can get the drivers we need.

Are you kidding me? When I went to get a new phone this spring, getting ICS was a pr-requisite for any phone I looked at. If it doesn't end up with an ICS update, I'm gonna be pissed.
Dont know why anyone didnt see this coming. I said this would happen when they announced ICS and got flamed. Motorola doesnt give two ****s about its customers and they show it every day. Once I get rid of this piece of crap Photon, I will NEVER own another Motorola product.
I was excited to get this phone and its been a complete disappointment.
#screwyoumotorola
Well, that's the problem with Android, isn't it? That it's a complete train wreck. Microsoft and Apple are pissed at Google because Google is giving away their OS while they sell theirs, which allows OEMs to build monster Android phones (i.e. they put the OS cost toward better hardware).
It isn't in the OEMs' best interest to update their phones. Not at all. We are not Motorola's customers. US Cellular is. Sprint is. And the other carriers who buy Motorola phones (and tablets, perhaps). As Motorola's customer, Sprint (to use one) is not best served by last years' phones being updated to the next OS. No, Sprint makes more money if your next device has ICS. That results in a second sale for them. They already sell the phone to you at a serious loss, with a contract. So, why should they support the phone beyond the life of the contract? You buy a Gingerbread phone at a great price. They are hoping you will buy an ICS phone at a great price in two years.
To the carriers, Android smartphones are evolving too fast. Updates are coming out faster than they are comfortable with. They like the iPhone model better -- fewer than half a dozen devices, all the same basic hardware, easy update. Same with WP7/WP8 to come, so few devices. And of course higher costs = higher profits.
Meanwhile, the developers at XDA and the like help you extend your phone's life. I have ICS on my Electrify (Photon) and it's awesome. When I got it, everybody was saying it couldn't be unlocked. But somebody figured it out. Now I'm running CM9 (ICS) and it's given my phone a completely unnecessary kick in the pants. I didn't think there was much room for improvement (and maybe a CM7-based, Blur-free ROM would have been a good choice, as well) but it's really lit a fire under my phone's, eh, kickstand.
I understand that people want to jump to HTC or Samsung. I say go ahead. It's not in the best interests of either of those companies to get you ICS sooner than later, either. Motorola makes the best radio out of any of the three. If you want upgrades sooner, I think your absolute best bet is to get a Nexus straight from Google, but those may be GSM-only? Even if one is CDMA, I doubt US Cellular will activate it for me. So that will not work in my case, I don't think. I think the best thing for everybody is a place where developers can come together and work on custom ROMs for these phones and be thanked or even donated to by those who can... hmm... a place kind of like this one.
Can't say I'm shocked.
Lame!

To postpone it in hopes that people buy the next photon or whatever, and hide behind how "difficult" it is to push this out, is one thing..
but to also come out with a 2.3.5 update that completely prevents people from customizing their phones and make due with some unofficial ics fun till the real thing comes, is a pretty shtty move.
Are they saying "Boo!" or "Booo-urns!"?
Doesn't surprise me one bit. How many devices other then the Nexus see more then 2 software updates? Maybe 1 or 2,if they're a flagship device and they break some sales record. Even if you buy a high end device there's no guarantee anymore you'll get any future updates regardless of what the companies behind it say.
Considering that 2 of the DROID devices got cut from the list I don't expect us to get the official update at all

I was holding off on running an ICS ROM on my phone to wait for the official update.
This is why my next device will be my first iPhone. I already own a 3rd gen iPod Touch and I STILL get the latest updates for it straight from Apple. I love the fact that when Apple pushes out an update, it's not for just one device, but for all of them! They all come out on the same day so there is no waiting for "when's it gonna be my turn".
I really think Google needs to take a more proactive approach to the Android updates.
the problem is the carrier.
That being said, they probably have enough leverage in the marketplace to put mandates on carriers.
me too

I totally agree. I too was waiting for the ICS update before installing a custom ROM. Guess I have no more reason to wait.
However I would never want an "I" product.

So you think ICS is done and Sprint is holding things up? Yea, right.

I was wrong saying carrier only. Its carrier/manufacturer.
Android ICS "code" is done. It would be an easy push if all devices were Nexus. The holdup is motorola adding their flavors like blur, and carriers with their requirements and bloatware.
