Hey all,
Im very new to the android scene, ive got a HTC Hero G2 on T-Mobile on the UK. I been reading alot of the forums im kind of lost. I want to upgrade my current firmware 1.5 to 2.1. Below is my phones details, ive seen on youtube how to upgrade without rooting, but do i need to root it in order to upgrade?...
Firmware Version: 1.5
Baseband Versions: 63.18.55.06FU_6.35.07.08
Kernel Version: 2.6.27-0089c992
Build Number: 2.73.110.26
Software Version: 1.0.0.A6288
Any help greatly appreciated.
first thing you want to do is get a custom recovery image, preferably amon ra 1.6.2.
i'm not sure what method you can use to install it, but you can find out about that here in the forums. easiest method would be to fastboot it, using FlashRec is also not that complicated, and last would be the goldcard as it might be a hassle to get it to work.
once you have the custom recovery installed it is all pretty self explaining.

Indeed. BTDAG's guide linked in my signature is an excellent place to start. Bookmark it. Read the whole 1st post including the FAQ,... then start playing!!!
Thanks alot guys.
I have managed to do the goldcard method and the custom image recovery using amon ra 1.6.2.
So, from this point onwards do i just select a custom ROM from the forums?... and just apply that?..
Also, can i just install this RUU_Hero_C_Sprint_2.27.651.5_R_signed_release (sprint 2.1) or will that not work?...

Do NOT install the sprint releases! They are for CDMA hero's only. It will most likely brick your phone. Just select a custom rom and flash that when the official 2.1 update is finally released (and the kernel) the custom roms will be updated with it and they will finally become fully stable.

as stated already, installing sprint roms on gsm hero will brick it, so don't.
besides from that you don't want to install any RUU that is available, unless you want to go through creating the goldcard again.
go to one of the threads here, download the rom's zipfile, put it on your sdcard, boot to recovery, select "flash update.zip from sdcard" and let it do it's thing. if it doesn't boot at first go back to recovery and do a wipe.
have fun!

You cant run it from windows. you have to run it from the command line.
Read http://wiki.cyanogenmod.com/index.php?title=Fastboot <----THAT to understand fastboot. Shouldn't be any more questions.
I'm a total noob at rooting and stuff, but after spending the last few hours trying, I found another way to do it. Download the Clockworkmod file, as posted, and download the file mentioned under the "To root" section; put this second file onto your sd card. I just transferred it using Windows.
Extract the recovery file somewhere you'll remember it. (I used Downloads.) Now, go to http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=794638 and download Android Flasher. (Make sure your Aria is hooked to your computer.) Run Android Flasher, and select "Recovery". (It's one of the options on the left side). Navigate to the location of your recovery.img, and select it. The phone should switch itself to fastboot, then install clockworkmod. It then goes right into clockworkmod, and you can follow the steps listed to install the root.
Once I found the thread on Android Flasher, I had clockworkmod and root within about 90 seconds. Just downloaded and installed Titanium Backup, and it asked for superuser rights, which I granted, so it seems to be working for me.
I hope this is clear enough; I'm a bit tired right now. It was an easy process....after my three hours of trying command lines and stuff. Sigh.
it don't get no easier.THANK YOU!!!

No, you will probably need to flash the AT&T 2.2.2 Froyo update to get HBOOT 1.02
Install the old software after AlphaRev-ing...
Don't know if this will work for anyone else, but I was able to do the following:
1. Run AlphaRev on newest HTC Aria
2. Install the 1.25.502.12 HTC ROM over the 2.2 ROM (previously impossible due to the new HBOOT)
3. Run Unrevoked
4. Install CM7/Google Apps through ClockworkMod

Once you are s-off you can use fastboot to flash clockworkmod then install your rom of choice. No need to downgrade and unrevoke. Attn1 has posted the instructions on how to flash clockwork from fastboot a couple of times in Aria threads.

You have to update to HBOOT 1.02.0000 before you can use this. Installing the AT&T 2.2.2 official update is the easiest way to do that.

Hi there,
Forgive me if this has already been asked. Anyone know of a simple and safe way of getting S-Off on the Hero? Mine is happily rooted, running Ele 3.6, etc. with Amon Ra recovery, but it's still in S-On state.
Thanks in advance!
Searching for this also
I remember getting the S-OFF SPL from Modaco.
I am not sure if this is the best version, but this is the link I found after some quick searching.
android.modaco.com/topic/296389-24nov-unlocked-spl-for-gsm-hero/
Hi guys,
Sorry to bring up this old topic, but I can't get my Hero to be S-Off.
I've downloaded the SPL at the last post, and installed it in Recovery mode, but the changes won't apply.
Can you give me a help?
Thanks
I want to know how to do this too. I downloaded HTC's method but it only works with stock firmware which i dont have
can you use unrevoked? i know for my cdma hero and evo 4g unrevoked was the method (well, revolutionary which is based off of unrevoked for evo)
edit: i found this: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1471460
read everything 100x through if you plan to try this, and by god if your not sure or have any fear of a possibly bricked phone, THEN DO NOT DO THIS! lol
thats just what i found through search, there may be other methods.
is s-on limiting anything that you need to do with your phone?

Hi Found the tutorial on Xda forum also, http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1471460
i had try it and at the emulator flash_image, i get error said that flash_image not found ..
any one can help???
What ROM do you have, stock or CM7, you need to download the flash_image binary first. http://wiki.cyanogenmod.org/wiki/flash_image get it from here
I do not take credit for any of the following, it was all information I have found posted here. Please thank the ops in the threads I link, it is their work that supplied all the information. Thanks.
For all the noobs out there (like me) here is a direct step by step process I used to go from rooted via one click root, to get the new ota, new hboot, and radios.
Thanks to con, andybones, chad, nilsp and everyone else who has answered my questions over the last few days!
I didnt take the ota, I used cons ota rom.. this was my steps for that to stay stock rom but get the ota.
Also, I am running amon ra.
1) download rom from here http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1467329
2) boot into recovery, flash rom....
here you can go two ways, if you dont want the new baseband, it will flash the ph98img and not do anything, if you want the new radios I will tell you how I did it, then tell you where you need to start if you wont want them. if you dont want the new radios, and are having wifi issues go to step 13 (and be sure to thank andybones for that tutorial hell thank everyone whos threads I have linked to here).
3)perform nandroid back up
4)via adb (thing you used to unlock originally) fastboot oem lock YOU ARE NOW LOCKED.
5)boot into hboot it will flash the ph98img
6) Unlock bootloader (find the email with the unlock.bin code and follow those instructions)
7)Reboot phone
8)connect to pc, charge only usb debugging enabled
9)run one click root
Proceed with this if you get the mainver error ONLY otherwise if having wifi issues, proceed to step 13
10) after rooted follow this post http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1467099 NOTE, op in the thread supplied his miscnew.img USE IT! (post 29)
11)Read this thread http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1459347 it will explain how to get the ph98s to work.
11a) do the ph98 file thing to the ph98 img in the amon ra ph98zipto get it to flash in bootloader
12) after amon ra is restored, perform restore nandroid.
If wifi is not working, even if you dont have mainver issues do step 13
13) If having wifi issues as in not working go to this thread http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1467793 and follow instructions EXACTLY!!!
Now you should be running new radios, hb2.11, the 2.6 kernel etc.
You will have to follow the post in step 11 to get any ph to work from now on.
I AM NOT RESPONSIBLE IF YOU BRICK YOUR PHONE, BURN YOUR HOUSE DOWN OR ABDUCTED BY ALIENS BY FOLLOWING THE ABOVE INSTRUCTIONS.
Thanks for posting this, it should help me. Question: After i do this can i reflash a custom gb rom "like nils p gingersense" and still keep the new radio and other firm ware that came in the ota. Or will it not work?

I've been (at least trying to) patiently wait for Deck to post full install instructions for CM10 but the CM10 op is still bare as bones. Has anyone else posted an install guide or instructions yet?
I'm currently rooted with RegawMod and running MeanRom 2.1 and it's really terribly laggy and frustrating, I can't wait any longer for CM10. Do I need S-off to install CM10 or do I just wipe, flash, and go?
Thanks for any help or links!
If you are on hboot 1.15 or higher you have to fast boot flash the kernel.
Other than that its just like a normal aosp install. Wipe flash rom flash gapps.
Its been my daily for 3 weeks.

You don't need s-off. You will however have to flash the boot IMG separately by using fastboot or the app flash image GUI and a full wipe is definitely required. There is a helpful thread in Q&A called "don't panic" that will answer all your questions
Good luck

The S-OFF guide was way over my head so I just let it be. If there's not a real good reason for doing it, and I can still run CM10, then I'd rather not.
It allows you to directly flash new firmware like radios to fix any problems a device might be having. If you have Son and want the latest firmware you have to revert back to stock and accept ota, then unlock reflash recovery and reflash custom ROM or rooted stock, you could also just flash root installer if you want to just root stock

No, S-ON people with 1.12 H-boot can flash radios and firmware from recovery. They can do whatever they please in recovery just like S-OFF. S-OFF users can flash things from bootloader and even change the appearance of their h-boot to read S-ON and **locked** even though they are S-OFF
To the OP, this is the best rooting guide I've seen. It really explains everything step by step. http://androidforums.com/evo-4g-lte...panda-s-htc-dev-ltevo-root-dummies-guide.html Its recommended to have Linux at least bootable, because in the small chance the phone gets bricked... the unbricker program requires linux.
I ran it in windows before the unbricker was available, no issues here
You basically just hook the phone up to it and run the program like you do for most other root programs. All 1-click

Do I need to flash updated firmware / radios separately from CM10, or does CM10 include latest firmware?
Sorry to ask dumb questions, but I do hope this thread will also be a good resource for others like me.
You don't have to flash any firmware updates. There are a few users with issues although they may be related to the ROM update and not necessarily the firmware included. I haven't really checked since I'm s on. If you want to update the radios there's an update zip here somewhere, be sure to read through everything carefully. Radios are more risky then every day flashing
Alright everyone now I need some help!
I flashed CM10 after s-off, was on stocked 1.13 rooted rom.
Now when CM10 boots up I am faced with a phone activation screen. It says something like "you will not be able to place calls or access the mobile network until the device is activated". I am unable to make calls or receive calls or access the internet. I have tried reflashing cm10 and the problem persists.
In the mean time, I will try flashing a nand backup and see where that gets me. I appreciate any and all help, and I have found no posts in the CM10 thread with a similar issue.
Update: I wiped and restored a back-up, MeanRom 2.1. Upon boot, hands-free activation ran and activated the phone and downloaded a PRL update. Everything is working fine now. Not sure if I should try CM10 again or what? Any advice?

Hi guys!
I read the forum, then read some more. And then read sticky topics and other links....
... and I'm totally confused now!
I want to root the phone, so I can manipulate the memory of it. That's it. I don't want to lock, unlock, S-off, flash or whatever the term it is for whatever action.
Is there a glossary on those terms, readable by a human being?
What I need is the Game CIH to work, so I can get more money/coins/lives/whatever in my games.
For that, I need the phone rooted.
And there we have it Now you know what I need, so if there's someone that can tell me 'go follow THIS tutorial' or 'read here', I would be very grateful!
This is most likely already poking my eyes out, but I have no idea what ROM flashing is, nor why would I want S-OFF instead of S-ON....
Help!
AW: What do I need for root?
If u only want root you dont need s-off
S-off gives you the ability to flash everything, even another bootloader
but if you dont even have an idea about that, better stay away from that
Heres a list of those terms :

No, i said you need an unlocked bootloader
That is not the same as s-off
S-off is only needed if you want to flash aosp roms one day
Just follow the instructions of the second link (a+b) and you will have root access
But make a backup first
Conclusion:
1 backup (adb , there are tools for that, i think one was named ultimate backup tool, if you dont find it search for Android 4 backup without root or similar)
2 unlocking bootloader (htcdev, a from link)
3 flash custom recovery(adb , b from link)
4 flash superuser (copy to SD, boot to recovery, install zip from sd)
That should be all for root

That is not the same as s-off
S-off is only needed if you want to flash aosp roms one day

I managed to understand the instructions you linked to, but it's good to have a summary just to make sure I did indeed understood everything as I should have
But there's a problem :/
B4. A link to recovery on mediafire is dead :/
And I don't have 10 posts yet, so I can't post in dev forum and ask OP to make an update.
On the other hand, he clearly stated he doesn't read private messages regarding other people problems :/
I'll go if I can be useful somewhere else on the forum and get myself up to 10 posts
Any recovery made for your phone should work. I would recommend 4EXT Touch Recovery. I uploaded it here for you http://www.mediafire.com/?702ttkdggk69g3i so just unzip it and use the recovery.img as the instructions imply.
Do note that I downloaded this recovery via their app I downloaded from 4ext.net using an Evo 3D CDMA phone. I do know 4EXT works with both CDMA and GSM phones but I can't be certain if they use different recovery.img files.
Thank you all!
I successfully rooted the phone, thanks to you!
Actually, not only you, mostly the guy who wrote the crazy good tutorial!
But without you my mojo wouldn't be enough to make it through
I unlocked the bootloader via htcdev.com, then flashed recovery image and finally ran superuser.apk.
I'm in the process of restoring all my data back to the phone at the moment, and this should be it I guess
Thank you so much for your help, going through the process once really put all the pieces together for me.
Now I really know what some terms actually mean
So... if I would like to install different OS (CWM, CM...), it's much easier now, right?
I should go to recovery and say "install from a file" and select my new OS?
I think so... but nevermind, I'm done with the questions. You've both been more than helpful already
P.S.
Oh so many smilies... can you tell I'm happy?
