Hi,
Is there any app that would list down which app is using data connection and how much data is been consumed. Similary is there any firewall kind of applicaiton which i can configure to block unwanted data access by these applications?
Thank
not sure if this works on the x10minis, but try dialling *#*#4636#*#* into the phone dialler and it should bring up a testing screen, then select battery usage, and change the top combo box to network usage.
Can't help on the firewall
*#*#4636#*#* does work, but Network Data doesnt show which apps using the network

Hi Guys, I got fond of the Hero a lot. and requested a friend to get one for me on his way from london (sim free, unlocked)
1 thing concerns me is the data consumption over 2g networks as its quite expensive here
I need to know if I can stop data transfer without affecting calling ability???
this is crucial in my decision to buy
Appreciate your clear and quick responses.

Settings > Wireless Controls > uncheck "Mobile Network" > Qapl'a!
you can even put a Mobile Network Toggle on the desktop to just switch it on and off.
Whilst off, you can still send and receive SMS and calls, but not MMS.

does shutting mobile network shut data only?
the toggle is native
no you don't need to root the phone
yes, it only shuts off mobile data (including MMS), this is why it's called mobile data, and not airplane mode. Wifi is unaffected.
Data Roaming
Hi everyone,
We've just started using the Hero at work as a business phone, a lot of our employees travel internationally on a regular basis.
Using our old WinMo phones, picking up emails whilst roaming was automatically disabled by default but could be manually sync'd with our exchange server if required.
On the Hero, there doesn't seem to be a similar function. You have to go in to the Mobile Network settings and disable 'Data Roaming'.
My question is, if I disable 'Data Roaming' but still have 'Enable Always-on Mobile Data' active, will any downloaded apps still be able to connect and update i.e Twitter gadget for instance? Or does disabling 'Data Roaming' stop data connections full stop?
The ideal scenario for us would be something that is quick and easy to turn off (or turn on) that would prevent any data connection but will let us open up the Mail app and sync manually with our exchange server if required (like we could with WinMo).
I currently have the Toggle Selector app on my home screen to quickly get to the Mobile Network settings. I'm just not sure what to enable/disable in the settings menu that will let me get mails manually and prevents all other data connections.
Any advice or suggestions would be more than welcome. It's got us scratching our heads a little and is stopping us from upgrading other staff phones as we don't want to end up with a phone we can't use as a business tool internationally as it costs us the earth in data roaming charges.
The easiest way i can think of would be to have the toggle on screen, and when you want to sync, you turn it on, manually refresh the emails and then turn it off again.
if you have data roaming blocked, it will override the 'always on mobile data' setting, so no, when roaming is turned off, nothing will connect when you are abroad.
honestly though, android is not ready for business really, which is why HTC are pitching it at the consumer market mainly.
I am in the same position, just want to be clear, with the "toggle" will it stop all data? (including browser, mms texts, apps updating) i only want these when i have wifi.
thanks in advance
to make it absolutely clear:
When at home,. turn mobile data off and NOTHING can access GPRS.
When roaming on another network when abroad, turn data roaming off and GPRS is blocked. To access GPRS, you have to turn data roaming AND mobile data on to access GPRS.
The Data roaming toggle has precedence over the Mobile data toggle.
Thank you, appreciate it
I have noticed toggling mobile networks occurs twice. What I mean is, after toggling a couple of times, I cannot seem to coonnect to 3g anymore? In that case I always have to restart my phone. Anyone experiencing this issue? It could be a bug. I used To have a blackberry bold and that bug was fixed by an update
Hi ,everybody.
Is there have a tools (shortcuts) can be use to enable/disable 3G network on photon 4G.I'm working at china, Just only using 3G networks.
Thank you in advance.
Yes the 3g data can be disabled.
It has been discussed here: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1197081&highlight=data
Personally I use Tasker to disable my 3g network but that program costs money. You can also just go to Settings --> Battery & Data Manager --> Data Delivery --> and uncheck where it says Data enabled.
It's exactly what I wanted. I achieved my purpose by using Widgetsoid2.x which you told me.
Thank you, sub2k1.
Hi all, i've been having this problem with my Sony Ericson xperia Play.
My bills came in as a hefty $$ bomb. I do not have data plan, so all internet activities are charged at GPRS connection rate. I've had my mobile network switched off, so there's no possibility that applications would still connect to data? Or there is? i only use my phone for smsing and dealing calls.
I called my service provider up, and they told me that my phone's internet activity is active and running. have you guys ever encountered such problem? Could anyone please enlighten me?
Thanks in advance to all.
Usually there arent any problems like this for android. And just to
make sure, the box u checked off was in Settings>Wireless & Networks>
Mobile Networks>Data enabled right?
Normally once you get a phone, the data will automatically on. So normally I will boot up without sim at first, then switch off data.
(I've unlimited plan btw)

Droidwall
You could always use an app that will not allow any apps to access the network. ie a firewall like (droid wall for rooted users). That would eliminate your problem. There are many apps out there which need permission to access the network, including the stock email, google maps, the market, and etc.
I'm of the same mind as the previous posters. But if you see data being used ie. the 3G symbol or whatever your data symbol is and it lights up or is present when the check mark on mobile data is off then it's not actually off. In other words if you don't see only the cell singal bars you could be using data. Hope that helps.
Edit: Also you said "SMSing" would that also include pictures or video in your defn of that? If so those are data. At least in the U.S. they are.
There is a program called APNdraoid or sg like that. this program modifies the apn settings and dont allow your phone to connect to mobile internet. btw you can manually change the apn settings from Settings->Wireless&Networks-> Mobile Networks->Access Point Names. all you have to do is to modify the settings (add some text to the end of the apn row)

To avoid data charges (and seems that you don't have a data plan), I would suggest delete all your APN settings under Access Point Name in Mobile network settings.
If the problem still occurs, you can call your operator to disable internet access from your mobile account.

Thanks for the suggestions ! i'd just go ahead and change the apn ! But i still can't find the root to the problem. It's like paying for something i had never used at all ..
Btw, I am curious that if you tried to load a webpage in your browser when mobile network is unticked? If you did, does it load?
I wanted to know if the data that my apps are using on a wifi network are saved anywhere. The reason I ask is I have been using an open wifi network to connect to recently and wanted to know if the data that I'am using is being saved anywhere on the network, or the router. And what I mean by data is, login details to hotmail, banking, conversations over ebuddy, kik etc.
Also what about secure networks, where I would need a wifi login, can the data be accessed by admins if they wanted to access it at a later date, or is it only accessable by sniffing packets as they are being transmitted?
I have no mobile data, not even the little up and down arrows or letters next to the sims signal bars show up.
I have tried all the troubleshooting and different settings for prefered network type, airplane mode is off, mobile data is on with no limits, no power saving modes are on. Phone is dual sim so I have tried on both sims and tried disabling the other sim and changing the sim slots, both sims are loaded with data credit that works in other android devices. Wifi works fine. Factory reset does not help.
There is only one trouble shooting thing I can't try. When I select settings > more > mobile networks > access point names it says
"Access Point Name settings are not available for this user"
Perhaps if I could set APN I could get mobile data. How can I do that or how can I try to get mobile data to work?
Phone is E2363 with build 26.1.B.2.102 Thanks if you can help
Try clicking on the plus sign and add in the operator name (mine is DST in my country) and followed with a 'dot' then internet in the Mobile network settings.
Example for me: DST.internet
You may also want to try with .WAP
Example for me again: DST.WAP
I left mine like that and I seemed to have gotten the Mobile data to work. But my case was different, I have the up and down arrows when Mobile data is turned on, just couldn't access the Web.
If adding another APN fails, flash ftf. Seems like the last resort.
There is no plus sign, just the text
"Access Point Name settings are not available for this user"

Oww.. Sorry.
I guess you can try reflashing the ROM? :silly:
From what I have google searched, it has something to do with com.android.providers.telephony and we can't do anything about that without root so reflashing is the only option.
EDIT: Have you tried going around with the Service Providers stuff and rebooting? Idk might as well give that a try
downloading automatic settings from Settings -> More -> Internet settings fixed it, thanks yall.
