I have a problem with my O2. In <setting>, <system>, <memory>, I see that the "memory in use" in "programs" side keeps increasing, while I never installed any programs. And "memory in use" in "storage" is OK (no increase). I already tried to use "remover" but there are some files (e.g. MSGQUEUE...) cannot be removed. Any solution? What's the problem?
I join in on this problem. I looked up files bigger than 64K, but the biggest one is CompatcFlashBAckuUpNew (28,7MB). I guess that's just my calender (about 1 or 2 appointments per day) and my Contacts (about 200, but only name and tel.nr.!). Can someone help us out? Where can we get a good manual, where things like memorymanagement for dummies is thouroughly explained? The manual on the pda itself is not enough to me!
Now let me try to give you some answers....

Storage is the memory on your device where all you´re additonal Software appears. Also your files like notes and all this. (when you don´t put it to a storage card.
Programs is the memory that you have free for running programs All running Programs need a little bit of memory, so that is why this side increases....
Just go two taps in front to see the chapter Running Programs. Close them you didn´t use actualy and you will get more free memory....
CompatcFlashBAckuUpNew (28,7MB).

This is like the name shows a Backup from your Data in the file system. I´m sure you picked up at least one time the program SDbackup. I´m also sure, that this File is on your Storage Card...

LumpiStefan,
Thanks for the fast reply.
1. You are probably right on the point that the CompactFlashBackUpNew is on the sdcard (wiht sdbackup). Doing 'find' files larger than 64KB it only lists files with a little icon of a red box in a little white box beneath it - that probably means that it's on de sdcard. So that shouldn't be the problem. Thanks.
2. There is no additional software installed. When I stop all running programs on the 'Running Program List', I have a total main memory of 31.21MB. Free storage memory = 0.93MB and Free program Memory = 1.21MB. The only removable program is the keyboard driver.
greetings,
Lionel
Don´t know where this came from.....
Probably you´re syncing your emails with your PC and also syncing the attachements. This may be an possibility why your Memory is so low. Have you tried to save the attachements to the storage Card?
I´m using my xda for a while now, haveing also about 200 Contacts and installed the Tomtom-Software. My totaly free memory is about 17 MB...
Regards
Stefan
Many thanks Stefan,
I can now be sure that something is wrong with the memory. I've been wondering about this for a few months now. I have no more mail synched with my xda and before the attachments were indeed saved to storage card. I'll just do a hard reset and start all over again.
greetings,
Lionel
Thanks Stefan,
I managed to fix my problem, but if I explore the content of files, I can see big files which I don't know how to erase??? (e.g. MSGQUEUEDATA/MICROSOFT/...) Any solution?
Is anyone else having this problem, sometimes when pressing on a storage card installed app's icon to load it, it is endlessly loading and after 2-3mins you get a windows unable to run message.
If yes, is there a solution for that, except installing everything in phone memory ?
Which App do you mean exactly, or are these everybody of the SD card?
Any app randomly at some point it will crash like this and when the msg comes if you try again the app loads normaly. I read somewhere about this problem but can't find it again...

sorry, have unfortunately no idea for this problem
good luck
Thanx anyway for your interest, appreciate it
try a different memory card/rom ... try a different memory card if u have one at hand , or a rom if u dont have one at hand , u will then know whats causing it
Same here, everything appears to be fine then out of the blue you tap start and tap on any application that is on the SD card and I just get the wait cursor forever and there is nothing you can do but reset.
Whats strange is this happened last night and I pressed reset but it did not reset (maybe just pressed lightly) then it bleeped and said the application could not be found.
I just thought it was me
Me too, on supplied SD card.
I suspect the SD card falls asleep and isn't instantly accessible so leads to this error which causes the 2 or 3 minute hang. I've recently been ensuring I access the SD with a file manager program to wake it up before launching the app I want. I haven't had the error yet when using this pattern.
I might write a launcher program that wakes up the SD card prior to launching the intended app if it continues to look like a sleeping SD card is the cause of the problem.
I first thought it was a problem with .NET programs on the SD card as it's my self-written programs that I use most on the SD card. This is still a possible (but now lesser) suspect for me
Everyone has this problem ... and if you don't ... yer fricken lucky ehhehehe.
Take a look all over the TG01 forums. This problem along with other SD card related problems exist everywhere you go. Now I have owned both the TG01 and the T01a. I don't recall this problem existing on the T01a from DOCOMO. Unfortunately, I couldn't sim unlock the T01a, so I sold it for an unlocked TG01.
My friend, if you could write a launcher to "wake up" the SD card, that would be VERY much appreciated by literally everyone on this forum.
Thank you.... very much in advance,
-Kili.
PS: Something nifty. I have installed everything that runs as a service or consistently in memory on my main memory, and I even use all wallpapers from main memory and make sure that all cashing takes place on the main memory. It hasn't frozen for a few hours now. Even coming out of sleep mode, everything is A-OK.

Yeah thought of doing that but never did cause i soft reset quite often and i want my stuff in storage so i don't lose them.. With the 6.1 rom I don't get this very often, in fact an app stack yesterday after almost two weeks that i'm using this rom. I'm thinking maybe it was also because in 6.5.x roms i used changed icons for apps that were all in storage also, whereas in 6.1 i didn't find any way to change icons, so i'm using the stock ones. Anyway i'm happy at least i don't get it often.
Holy crap! It really really worked.
Well.... holy crap! I loaded up Resco Explorer, open up my SD Card, "Woke it up" so to speak. Then I can use the programs on my SD Card without fear. I think there is a definite work around here, we need someone to come up with a "SD Wake-up" program for the TG01, I would do it myself but I would probably brick everyone's devices in the process ehehehehheehhe(I don't know how to program)! Thank-you so much LesForges. You da man for coming up with the easy-yet-impossible-for-kili-to-find workaround/solution.
I haven't had this problem occur in one day now. My phone has been rock solid... it is a miracle! Honestly .. I feel a certain peace inside.
Guys seriously we need to get the word out about this solution. We can use this and probably overcome this horrible annoying error with a simple application!

Allright... I can't program, BUT I CAN DAMN SURE MIX N' MASH... ohh yeah
All-right, what is the one problem that plagues all of our devices? THE "SD CARD" sleep mode/app loading problem/freezing for no reason/and generic crappiness of the Toshiba SD CARD drivers.
And for you lucky few that haven't got a clue what I am talking about ... this goes out to you... "SKREW YOU EHHEEHEH mahthafa'&Az, I HATE YOU.... ya lucky basterd skum" (Just kidding of course) eheheheh
Needless to say, some people this doesn't seem to effect, others, this is a nightmare, so much so, I have contemplated selling my beautiful device before finding this. The Windows Mobile 6.1 rom solved so many problems for me, but still this one SD Freeze after Sleep mode problem persisted... This is how I overcame the issue.
First of all... what is the problem... the problem is easily duplicated if you go into sleep mode, wait a couple of minutes, then your sd card goes to sleep, then turn the device back on and run a program or application that is installed on the sd card. Your device will freeze and if it didn't freeze this time, try it a few more times... it will freeze. To overcome this issue, as stated above, go into Resco Explorer and open up the SD Card and then your SD Card has been "woken up" so to speak and then everything is good again. But how does one automate the process? You must do this.
Install S2U2 - Swipe to Unlock 2, after configuring it, go into the "STU2 Settings", then go to "Others" in the options area, then point it to Resco Explorer. Now the nifty thing about Resco Explorer is that you have the option have it default to open in any directory that you desire. So of course, set it to "\Storage Card" ... that's all. So basically whenever your device goes to sleep, it will automatically open up the SD Card once you want to use your device again, so it will never catch you off-guard again. The problem is solved. Now.. for the next item, I really want to just close Resco Explorer as soon as I open it, can one make an executable batch file in Windows Mobile? Then all our problems are truly solved. I notice that I have to hover in the SD Card area for about 3 seconds for the icons in the root directory to populate. I assume you need to have Resco Explorer kinda on a timed delay.. So you use Swipe to Unlock 2 and then it should open up Resco for about 3 seconds and then quit. I don't want to minimize Resco, I really want to quit it so if the device goes into sleep mode again, then it is already set for next time. I notice the icons are cashed in memory wen I leave the program open, so I always have to go up and down a couple of directories in order to "Wake Up" the card.
If someone knows how to make some kind of script that would open up my Resco for a couple of seconds and then close it, man that would sure be appreciated. Thank you.

Class 10 Kingston
So... I just got my 16Gb Class 10 Kingston in the mail... I will let everyone know if it also solves this problem. I assume it will not fix the problem but hey if I can get a little more speed out of my device then I am happy. I will post my results later.
**UPDATE** [21:59 - 2010/06/17] - Tokyo Time
Tried my Kingston 16 Gb Class 10, but to no avail, problem still persists. So just stick with the above solution.

Do you know MORTSCRIPT? I think that this is exactly what you are looking for...
Unfortunately I'm just a beginner on this program.
Although the above solution would probably work (and so does navigating to the app and running the EXE directly), my preferred solution is just to install everyting in main memory. Its annoying to loose a feature like that, I know, but so far all of the apps I've wanted to install on the SD card came to a total of about 10MB, so its a lot easier just to install them in main memory and be done with it.
Maybe someone could write a mortscript to read the contents of a text file in the root of the SD card before lanching the chosen app?
I believe Schap's advanced config 3.3 will do the trick
http://www.touchxperience.com/en/applications/view.download/11/21.html
It has lots of settings and tweaks
Just goto power management and disable SD card
It worked for me
Holy crap! #2.... and I mean a big #2 Holy Crap!
Wow.. if this works... I will report back later, right now I am testing it. I will let everyone know if it works, but if the SD Card doesn't go into sleep mode, then this problem is totally solved.... WOW! I will check back later and let everyone know.
[Update - 12:36pm - Tokyo Time]
No freeze as of yet, Schap's advanced config v3.3 has done the job. However my activesync is now disconnecting after 5 minutes of being connected to the computer, it is still charging but it just disconnects. So, I assume it has something to do with installing Shaps, it is not a big deal. To fix it, I went into the power options in Schap's advanced config v3.3 and I disabled the power saving feature for "AsyncMAC". So hopefully that will do the trick. Another interesting fix is for the icon disappearing problem. There really is only one solution that I can find that works in both windows mobile 6.5 and 6.1. Go and change the icons using an icon changer and have the icons stored locally and not on the SD Card. Then everything is fine, then you now have a perfect device.
That is all she wrote my friends, we now have working devices. Really we need to make a sticky for these two fixes. This needs to be implemented into every rom, this is the biggest problem for our devices and they have been solved by the good members on this board, I wish i could take credit for something, however heheheheh, I can't. Wafeeq YOU ARE AWESOME. Thanks man for the suggestion.
Freezing Problem - "Schap's Advanced Config v3.3" - http://www.touchxperience.com/en/applications/view.download/11/21.html - Go to power management and disable the power saving feature for the SD Card.
Missing Icons Workaround for WM 6.1 - "SK Shortcut Manager" - http://www.s-k-tools.com/index.html?sksmgr/m_sksmgr.html - One needs to change the icons for programs installed on your SD Card, remember, use icons located in the main memory and not on the SD Card.
Missing Icons Workaround for WM 6.5 - "JWMD Icon Changer" - http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=567080 - Again, one only needs to change the icons for programs installed on your SD Card, use icons located in the main memory and not on the SD Card.
Thats it... fricken awesome shizenziebittle I am so ecstatic right now. Everything is done, I can just enjoy my device now. Yai.

If the SD Card doesn't go into sleep mode, that means that it's always draining current from battery. Please confirm battery consume

I've never had problems with moving apps back and forth from my phone's internal storage to the SD card. But recently, I've noticed that apps I used to be able to store externally (Shazam, Facebook, Twitter, etc.) have the "move to SD" option greyed out, making it impossible to move them off my phone. I'm running stock 2.3.4. I've combed the internet trying to find a fix to this issue, but have found no results so far. I'm contemplating doing a hard reset to hopefully fix this as a last resort if nothing else works... Anyone have any suggestions?
Unfortunately, not all applications support moving to SD card. This is typically because the developer has good reason for not allowing this. For example, apps like facebook that make use of widgets would error every time your SD card is unmounted. Now you may be thinking: "I never take out my SD card so why would this bother me"
However, every time you plug in your phone to a USB port to transfer files such as photos and videos the SD card automatically unmount.
Download App2SD from the market for an easy way to see a list of apps installed on your phone that are programmed to support moving to SD card.
Conclusion: without manipulating your device, there is no way to transfer the apps you've mentioned to an external storage device.

Hmm...that would make sense. But I've had Pandora stored externally on my SD card since I was running 2.3.3 and that has a widget feature as well. I'm assuming that the update to 2.3.4 made it impossible to store apps that have widget functionality to the SD once you move them onto internal storage. Thanks for the help.
First let me preface my inquiry with a few statements.
Renaming pics was previously an inconvenience but now I make my living with these photos so this has become an absolute nightmare.
I am absolutely so frustrated with what I can only describe as Google's stupidity. For being some of the smartest people in the world they do some things that a three year old would know better.
Also I have tried to do research on this before posting a new thread here, but all I find is outdated piecemeal information .
So please don't judge me. I've tried my best to figure this out without creating a new and/or redundant thread but I need someone who actually knows what is going on and who can explain to me what I can and can't do and how to fix what I've already done and how to set up my process in the future so as to complete my task as efficiently as possible. I mean really, isn't that what the goal of all this digital interaction is supposed to be about?
Now that I got that off my chest, here's my situation:
I work in what I call a "fun" business. I take pics and videos of guests on my phone (Android 4.4.4).
Not being able to rename the pics on the SD card from a garble of random letters and numbers to something identifiable is so STUPID it's incomprehensible. The devices are designed to take thousands of pics and we're told to store the pics on the SD card to save storage space on our devices, but we then can't rename them to something we can identify? Whether this was an accidental oversight or on purpose, my three year old niece would know better than that.
That being said, I do understand that the limitations of 4.4 don't allow third party apps to make certain changes to files on the external storage (SD) card.
So here's my delimma: I moved my pics to the SD card before I realized this limitation. So now I have hundreds of pics I need to post to Facebook, etc., but I need to rename them so I can identify them before I start posting.
Also I'm ASSUMING that I CAN rename a pic that is stored on my device's internal storage. If I am incorrect about that please correct me on that issue before moving forward with a solution.
If that assumption is correct I then am assuming that the easiest fix would be to transfer the pics back to the native internal storage and rename them there.
But again 4.4.4 seems to also limit my ability to move/transfer/copy/paste the pics from the SD card back onto the phone's internal storage.
I have thought about transferring the pics to cloud storage where I can rename them, but then I have two copies of the same pics but with different names, which is another nightmare scenario. (In the end I would like to have a renamed (identifiable) copy of the pics on my phone (SD card preferably, but if not practical, then on my phone's internal storage) and one on the cloud. (Any suggestions on the best cloud storage for pics and videos?)
Then I could (can I?) transfer the renamed pics back to my SD card so I have offline access to the pics. But this seems highly inefficient and time consuming. And then if I did this process then I would need to then continually delete the unrenamed pics because of storage issues on the phone, again inefficient.
And using a desktop is not practical as I'm working remotely and I really need to rename immediately as the pics start piling up quickly.
So my first step is going to be to change the default storage location of the pics to the internal storage of the device so I can test whether or not I can rename the pics immediately.
Whether or not this adjustment works for my future pics, I still have the issue of renaming the pics I have already moved to my SD card.
So........
1. Is there a workaround for renaming the pics on the SD card?
2. If not, is there a workaround for moving the pics back to internal storage? In this case I could use a Windows desktop to facilitate this operation as it should be a one-time operation, assuming I can immediately rename my future pics that I'm now going to store by default on the device's internal storage.
I would greatly appreciate any complete and consider suggestions on how to best address my problems. Thanking you in advance.
Vincent
You are correct that Google revoked the permission for third party apps to write to external storage. The only permanent fix seems to be patching your platform.xml to include media_rw group. Do you have root? If so install sdfix: kitkat writable microsd from the play store, follow the prompts and reboot. As always backup first just in case something goes wrong in the process. And you don't need to keep the app. Worked for me on both 4.4.2 and 5.1.1. Hopefully this helps.
You are also correct that you can copy or move the pictures to internal memory and rename them from there, but you should also be able to use your phone's built-in file manager to rename them on the SD card.
I just can't believe it was that simple. I have several File Manager apps on my phone.
I didn't really think about an Android stock File Manager.
I didn't know which one it even was.
I should have picked up on the error message specific verbiage about "third party apps".
I ran a test on what I believe is the Android stock File Manager app and I think it worked.
I'll test it again later and post back the results.
That was the solution. Just using the stock file manager allowed me to rename pics on the SD card.
Thanx for the help. My life is so much easier now!
