Sure it is. You just need a couple of electrical engineers and embedded software engineers to help out.
A budget of about 1-2 Million would be nice, too.
When you are finished, though, you might want to call it something else besides an Eris - maybe something snappy like "Erris".
Maybe hire a marketing guy and a sales guy, to help recoup your losses.
Oh crap, I see where this is going...

I remember when some guy took some processor boards for SGI workstations and had them solder faster processors on them
http://forums.nekochan.net/viewtopic.php?t=1071
But the eris processor is likely more specialized.
If by "faster processor" the OP meant "better speed bin of the same (msm7600) processor", the answer is "yes, with big risks": in general small processors are not socketed, but rather surface mounted (especially for cell phones, where space is tight). So even swapping a processor which is "identical" without the right equipment is both tricky and risky too. You can find videos on the web showing people doing this - on a cell phone - using a heat gun, some aluminum foil, and a vacuum pick-up tool.
If we're talking about a different processor, it is highly unlikely that it would share the exact footprint of the msm7600 - in which case you are talking about a new circuit board design, which is close to the same thing as starting from scratch.
Short answer is "No!".
^^ =\ I read that halfway through my answer and now I wasted all that time lol
Covered.
Thanks.i might try some of that stuff once I won't need mt eris anymore

I didn't change the processor, but I put two AA Energizers in my Eris and now it keeps going, and going, and going....

Can you post a link or something on how to do that.thanks

It's pretty simple. Using a standard pocket knife, shave each battery down flat to the width of the Eris battery. Line them up parallel and hot glue the two side by side (duct tape can be substituted if desired). Cut open a 1' section of 14/2 AWG wire purchased from Lowes or Home Depot and use the ground wire to wrap around the now affixed batteries (very important to use ground wire as we don't want anyone getting shocked). Hot glue or duct tape to make a permanent bond and your finished. Oh, and dont forget to wipe battery stats before starting.
It's a good idea to have the phone plugged in the first time you boot. For increased affects, hold the phone over the toilet.

I search and don't see anyone else complaining...
But my P500h is new and the battery is tight and I'm continuing to have "adventure" I don't want to have when removing it.
Originally I tried a thin blade screwdriver in the holes to left and right of battery to pry the battery up. But plastic was getting chewed and at one point I had a SPARK ! LOL.
So I wrapped electrical tape around battery to help pull it out but it threatens to break the tape with the force needed.
So now I use my screwdriver carefully just under the SDCard and it works but I worry about slipping and messing something up.
So am I alone with this problem ? Any good way to "grease" the battery, but not too much ?
Thanks !
No problem as such. I press hard with my nail near sdcard (bottom) downword I see there's a slit on battery at that place. Press down and pull up.

Thanks 4silvertooth; I seem to recognise your username.
My SDCard is at the top to left of the camera when looking from the back with Android buttons down and headphone jack up.
I don't see any slits on the battery, just a tiny ledge at the top that I guess my screwdriver catches on. But sooner or later I will wear that off.
I just removed the tape, and it might be a bit easier to remove now, although there is some dangerous battery metal showing.
Perhaps I could wrap the battery with something stronger than electrical tape... Like those fabric like things used to pop AA etc batteries out of devices.
Well, huh... Are you sure you have the right battery inserted the right way? Because, there should not be any trouble getting it out at all. Let alone screwdrivers or anything like that needed. Goes out pretty easily with a fingernail.

It's the battery I got with the phone, and that the sales dude installed for me, and the phone works, so yes.
I get the impression my Canadian Telus P500h (Note the 'h') is different than the P500 most of you have.
This is the phone with battery installed. To the left is the phone top, and the thin blade screwdriver is over the SDCard and pointing to where I am prying the battery out. The pens at top and bottom of the pic are where I originally pried and now have broken plastic and some semi-exposed battery metal. At top of the pic (right of the phone) is where I got the sparks.

This is the phone with battery removed and on it's side.
http://img225.imageshack.us/i/img20110529053318.jpg/
So I'm guessing from your descriptions of how easy it is, that there must be one or more things different on my phone.

Looks pretty much the same except for the red piece of nonsense right below the SD card which is causing all this. Stupid design.

You think ? It's an integral part of the back body and can't be removed without breaking stuff. Right now I can't even tell if it's the up and down or left and right that are most tight. Maybe both.
And even if it was removed, the battery has no slot at the end for a fingernail. Just a slight indentation over most of the end. With the force I need to remove the battery, I think lots of people would break their fingernail.
I've just marked this down as one of the engineering shortcuts that LG made to make a phone like this for $200. Having to pull that stupid battery out every SIM change or new ROM boot freeze is getting old fast.

Actually, now that I opened the phone - it is exactly the same, it is just that your photo has some weird shade so the red nonsense looks like it is lifted up to the battery edge. So, not really getting what it your problem except perhaps for being clumsy.

I blew up your pic and it's hard to see, but I think I see a fingernail slot in your battery by the SDCard. Mine has no slot, just a very subtle indentation.
And my battery makes a very clear SNAP sound when I push it in. Perhaps my battery is slightly different and a bit larger than P500 batteries.
My battery part # is LGIP-400N . It also says 1500 mAh 5.6 Wh 3.7v
and at bottom it says:
(T)SBPL0102301 LLL DC101203
Even your camera says 3.2 mine it says 3.0 so anybody with same specification would be helpfully.
The battery details are exact identical to mine.
So P500h is slightly different from P500.

Just because it's easy for you doesn't make me an idiot.
No I'm afraid this is not a joke. And I've been working "seriously" with electronics/computer since I was a teen in the mid 1970's building everything from a vacuum tube transmitter to micros with the first generation of micros: SCMP, 8080...
And I've rebuilt automotive turbochargers and transmissions so I'm no mechanical klutz either.
Yes I know this is slowly wrecking the battery which I why I posted. In primary school I was the "smart kid" who was the only one to question something weird or incomplete the teacher said because everyone else didn't want to look "dumb" by asking. Same here.
My personal history aside I do exactly what you say: "put you finger on the spot right below the SD Card, push your battery downwards then pull it towards you."
It doesn't work on my phone. The battery doesn't move down that I can notice. When I try to pull it towards me it just won't budge and threatens to break my fingernail.
I note that there are two little tabs at the bottom. These seem to require the bottom to be placed first, then the top gets pushed in last. That's when I get a loud SNAP. I think whatever is making this SNAP is also what makes it so hard to remove the battery. The same SNAP was also made by the sales dude in the store when he installed the battery and I'm sure he does that hundreds of times a week.
The instructions in the manual are quite bad, IMO. They didn't even mention all the little film things that should be removed. Perhaps there is something else that needs to be removed that the manual didn't mention or that I overlooked. Just stabs in the dark here now.
Well, PEBKAC case excluded, since noone apparently has similar problem, then either your phone is faulty or the battery is faulty. This simply is not normal, there is absolutely no need to use screwdrivers and excessive force to do this.
Would suggest to RMA the thing.

Yes doktornotor, I suspect you are right. I suspect it might have been a bad or out of tolerance phone/battery or perhaps excessive temps or humidity or whatever during storage and shipping.

Well, I have seen quite a bunch of phones almost impossible to even open. I recall one Nokia which I felt I will crush completely trying to remove the back cover. Tremendous force required. So trust me when I am saying that this one is about the most easy one to remove the back cover and the battery.
If it really bothers you since you are changing SIM cards frequently, would suggest going to some shop and test with another battery or two. If it is the battery, those are relatively cheap to get a replacement. If it is the phone, well... your screwdriver-scratched battery has nothing to do with that defect so you should not have any trouble trying to RMA it.

Yes, some good ideas.
SIMs are not the major issue. Trying ROMs that result in boot freezes are the main reason to keep popping the battery.
I wish there was a hidden hardware reset switch on these phones somewhere.
Heck, it wouldn't be hard for the designers to make such a feature that triggered by holding power, or some combinations down for 10+ seconds.
I'd buy a replacement battery off eBay for cheap. At worst you end up with the same situation and a spare battery for 5 USD or so (+ VAT or whatever y'all call it). At best you have a better-fitting battery on the cheap.
Designing a car mount to work with my Seidio case that will still allow docking features. The mount will be mated to a ProClip mount for ideal location. It will be molded out of Kydex and will have a micro-fleece like lining in it. The electronics will be torn from a Samsung OEM desktop dock from my Vibrant (close relitive of the captivate). This is a very rough idea based on a design in my head. Any input would be appriciated.
Update: I pulled the circuit board from the OEM dock. I'm torn between using it or not. The dock offer audio pass through but at the cost of fast charge capabilities. Not sure if i want to sacrifice this. Day to day the audio pass through will be very handy, but when I need GPS on long trips, I will have to rely on an occasional battery swap. Thoughts?

Yes I'm sure I could, but I imagine this would interfere with the audio pass through as you would be shorting the data pins to accomplish this, then how would the data pass.

I see. So the dock uses the USB connector to take the audio from the phone, to the 3.5mm jack attached to the dock. Then from the dock fo your head unit?

Precisely, I use slacker every morning for my morning commute plugged into the AUX via patch cable so this has major everyday advantage for me. This would allow me to simply drop my phone into the dock. Using Tasker I could have it auto launch slacker.
The only alternative to obtain the best of both worlds is to open up a patch cable, ID +/- then wire a switch shorting the data pins in the closed position. While this works in theory, I’m not sure what the effects it would have on the phone/stereo (noise or actual damage). I have little working knowledge of audio.
What if you used the current OE dock and modified that one? That one is already proven to charge.

If I run into one cheap I may try, but I don't want to throw money at this which was my original plan. I made my first car mount tonight. This is the first time working with the much thicker Kydex T 0.093" and boy was it a pain to work. The stuff is about 4 times thicker then the seidio cases plastic shell. I took pics and even a couple videos. I'm happy with it in that it was a shot in the dark and I didn't expect alot out of the first one and also I found out how damn touch this thickness of Kydex is. I will post up info on it tomorrow when I have time to actually type it all up.
interesting, I was hoping to build my own dock as well. Could you post pictures of the circuit board from the original dock? I'm close to buying one just to tear apart for the charge+audio

You can buy the dock for vibrant or captivate for about $8-$10. I tested they board and it does charge and pass audio.
There are about 6 tiny screws that are accessed by prying off the panel off the back. Be careful doing this, easy to gouge your hand.
The problem will come when you try to mount the board without leaving these delicate wires exposed. Hope this helped.

Should work just fine. I am putting the finishing touches on my guide right now for my first mount that I made last night. If you follow the instructions you should have no problem making a mount an incorporating whatever features you like. I'm still up in the air whether I will be using this dock board or just placing a 90 degree USB cable in. I am waiting to hear back on a quote from a Kydex dealer for a few more sheets and when I get those I will make a more refined end product. What I post here in a bit will be just a way of getting people on the track to making their own mounts. Many people don't realize how easy it really is.

I was looking at the wiring, if I could figure out which pins are used for audio, I could figure out if the other pins could (possibly already are?) fused. I know there are complains about OEM desk docks from captivate and other same gen galaxy s devices not fast charging.

If you plan to move into any sort of CAD/CAM development, I'd love to offer my modeling skills to the cause. I made this guy a while back for my Atrix as a desk dock, but ended up buying the HD dock towards the end of the Project lol.
I'm not trying to highjack this thread or anything, just want to offer my services to the cause. If there is an interest, i will start drawing up some plans.

Very cool work but mine will be mounted in my truck so that cool work would go to waste. My mount is aimed at the average joe who can invest <$20 and have themselves a full functional car dock. I'm working on tracking down sources for different parts. I just some rotating adjustable low profile swivels that will allow the case just to rotate from portrait to landscape rather then disassembly. I ordered two to try it out.
Nice cant wait to see the finished product will you be selling any?
I plugged my phone in to a MegaVox portable PA speaker to use it with a metronome. Since then my media volume is silent when headphones aren't plugged in, the headphones icon stays in the statusbar, and I've only been able to hear someone in a call by using speakerphone.
My ringtone and SMS notification sounds play, but the volume is faint, at best, when I turn the volume all the way up.
If my speaker is blown...is the repair expensive (as I can't upgrade until December)?

I agree with the patients comments. I'm rebuilding 3 MB680 atm and the ribbon cables drive m nuts. Its the reason LCD and digitizers are kind of a pain. I make a point to always use OEM parts. Ribbons are my only exception. I have yet to find a flaw in a replacement grade ribbon .

This is great and specific! Thanks.
I everyone. I'm looking for an app that can destroy all the hardware and all the information and data and ghost data. Like a surcharge of the battery and "burn" the phone or something Like that. Can someone help me?
And why exactly do you need this??
Flashing an RUU might help. It formats everything when internal data. If you actually wanna fry the hardware your best bet is an oven. Make sure to put down aluminium you don't want call phone sticking to your oven.
I just noticed your used the objective term "the phone" and not the possessive term "my phone". No one here really condones destruction of property.
Sent from my HTC_Amaze_4G using xda app-developers app
Apps don't have the capacity to do something like this, even hardware controls stop physical destruction of hardware.
If you are getting chased by the cops, just snap the phone in half and eat the microSD.
Two part magnesium dust, one part iron rust dust, and one part aluminium dust. Mix slowly in a glass container with a non-metallic spoon. After mixing, place a one inch tightly packed layer in a 4x6x3 box, then place the object onto the layer, then slow add another one inch layer, make a primer then get the **** back, because this will heat the object to above 5400f. In short no more object, what this object is a phone not a platter slow go to a flea market buy a 10$ microwave a nuke it.
I think he means an app that will destroy all this from a distance.

Just call your carrier and have them mark the imei as bad. Whoever took it would be screwed then!
Lmao... ohhhhhh.. now I get it, haha. I was like, whytf would you want to do that to your phone
I finally fixed the heat issue with the Galaxy S4..
Type: MOD
Difficulty: Medium..Easy for tech savvy people like myself.
This MOD requires you to dissemble your Galaxy S4, Thus voiding your warranty, however, if you take it apart successfully without damaging it, verizon/your carrier/Samsung will not know
Tools Needed: Small Philips head screw driver , Guitar Pick, or case opener.
Remove all screws on the back housing and use your guitar pick or case opener to remove the bottom speaker assembly. Then use your guitar pick (I use my nail to avoid putting dents in the plastic) and go around the whole edges of the device. Doing this will release the clips. Now once you remove the back housing, remove all the ribbon connections from the mainboard. Then use your tool of choice to remove the antenna connections (these come off but simply pulling them up, do NOT twist them!) At the top right corner there is a black screw, remove that and you should be able to remove the main board. You should now see a pink square (the biggest one , that is the heatsink)
What to do next...
Simply find a heat sink similar to the big pink one that is already installed. Once you have that, simply cut it to size if needed and place over existing heat sink.
No hot screen ever since and I am on the MDK build and have been charging for an hour and max screen brightness. No heat issue

I don't need a youtube video, I just need this step explained, preferably BEFORE I tear my $650 phone apart

Yeah probably should have explained that more haha. Well if you take the mainboard out, you will see a pink square on the frame of the device (check your mainboard if it's still on the cpu. this may happen if the phone is hot) It will be the biggest heatsink of them all. Its hard to explain. Once I finish flashing this ROM, I'll take my phone apart and take a picture. and a video...
I too would like to see this video... +1 here
Thanks for sharing
+1 on the video.

Great work! And hells yes on a video/picture tutorial, if you would be so kind! I expect a high production value too - there better be guitar solos and explosions.

Shucks. That's okay, with the way the movie industry is today we'll just have to wait a little while for you to release the digitally re-mastered version.

Why is it still stuck on 66%!? Should I try to re upload
I'm not an engineer or anything, I was just curious if you know if the added heat sink actually diffuses the heat more effectively or simply insulates it from the screen, masking the problem so to speak. Have you run temperature readings on the internals during intense use after the mod?
Sent from my SCH-I545 using Tapatalk 4 Beta
For those wondering... the heat sink is probably made of a thin sheet of special foam rubber like material.
I have used it before. It can be self adhesive and it feels cold to the touch from how fast it draws heat away.
Adding another layer adds to the thickness and will allow better contact, and it will increase the total mass of heat sink material meaning better heat transfer. It may add a little more stress to the main board though due to the added thickness taking up room.
Use pictures for each step and describe in detail what's being done in each step. I think this would be better than a video and easier to put together.
This should be moved to the general forum as this is not development work.
The risk reward for doing this is not worth tearing into a $600 device either. The ribbon connectors are extremely fragile and tear easily regardless of how tech savvy you may be.
But go ahead and pull out your screwdriver and tear into your phone if you really feel the need.

A tech savvy person like yourself should be able to figure that out.
