Cave Story - Android Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

One of my favorite games, I know it has been ported to some low power operating systems (such as a TI calculator), so how hard would it be to make it android native? Maybe we can emulate it through one of the operating systems its ported to? Thoughts anyone?

Feels good man
I was wondering this stuff myself. I've got a Rhodium I was thinking of booting Rhobuntu on just so I could carry Cave Story with me everywhere. I was also looking into GP2X emulators for Android in case that would let me play Cave Story on my Rhodium via XAndroid, but a native Android app would be ideal. Bounty? I'd pitch in for a port.

The source for Cave Story was taken down when it was announced that there was a version being made for WiiWare.

I am disappoint.
Guess I'll have to jam some Linux onto a phone then.

I was all excited for a second, thinking there was work going on for a PPC or Android port. I'm confused, as there are already Windows and Linux ports available here:
http://www.cavestory.org/downloads_game.php
EDIT: OK, I get it - open source! It took me this long because I'm a big dummy.

I know this thread is a tad old but actually, i am trying to port cave story to android. It will be open source when it is released as required by gpl (anyone wanting the source now can pm me). I have it loading into "safe mode" so far as the data directories still have to be defined manually as far as i know. Another bug i found is that it will not even load up in landscape mode at the moment. Its a problem with SDL_blit_N.c according to my crash reports. Attached is a screenshot of what i have working so far. As this is open source, any help with this project will be appreciated. Again, just PM me for the source.

I did some googling around, it seems like http://www.petitiononline.com/ and http://www.change.org/ are both among the more popular sites, though I've never used any of them.

Xperia64 made a version of Cave Story that nearly loads on my NookColor, so if we can get a more portable port working.

Wow, it looks great on my Droid 3! I don't think I'm getting any sound though, and trying to remap keys in the menu or pressing any hard keys other than arrows FCs the app. Too bad, as it looks like my phone is more than capable of handling a fully working version. I've even got hard keys, just not the right ones. It's painful to be so close but still so far from playing Cave Story on my phone. Thanks for keeping us up to date on stuff like this.
EDIT: sound works great! I forgot there's no sound in the opening scene, I had to let the start menu load first. No stutter or anything, if my keyboard worked in-game I'd be set.
SECOND EDIT: I was able to start a game and assign keys! The app crashes when I press most buttons, but it recognizes my arrow keys and the ok, shift, alt, voice, search, and at keys, so I'm all set. Won't let me remap them though, and now that I'm playing it does seem to be running at about half speed. Not that there's any lag, everything seems to just move more slowly, though the music plays full speed.

Nintendo exclusivity clause has the original developer by the balls, similar to Notch being locked into xBox Live Arcade and having to stop work on pocket edition of minecraft. What we have is the game patches and an engine cobbled together out of older source. I'll try and get some responses from the people who got the Raspberry Pink version working, and see what can be done.

This is great! There's a sound effect fix, and the latest version fixes button assignments and has the game running full speed, though the window has shrunk by half. I'm registering there tomorrow so I can post updates. I can't believe I'm playing Cave Story on my phone!

Hi i have been working on reverse engineering the LocationFree Protocol for quite some time now and i can assure you that the software is not opensource.
They opensourced an excerpt of the LiveDotCom Libraries that they use for their stream transport and even those files are incomplete. That is just to be compliant with the GPL.
The whole proprietary part remains closed source.
However i have been making some progess and have already got a proof-of-concept python implementation that can connect to a LF-B1EU Box and receive a few seconds of the stream.
This stream is encrypted. Thanks to this guy "http_//code_google_com/p/lftv" (sorry i am not allowed to post links in this forum) i even got a hint on how to decrypt it.
Currently i can decrypt the video frames but the whole thing is just a bunch of scripts and loosely coupled code that is far from anything one could call an application.
However i am still working on it and having quite some progress. So i would be interested in who would still like such an app and what boxes do you use?
greeting
michael
I have the 1st one that came out model # LF-B1
That's great that you are working on this project!! I will test anything whenever if needed
Locationfree ran great on Windows mobile 6 with a 3g connection
Sent from my Inspire 4G using XDA App
LF-B1 thats good to hear since i have a LF-B1EU which means the commandos to the streaming server should be the same.
What already works is to connect to the LocationFree Box, decrypt and save the frames to disk. Those frames are then decoded with a standalone executable to create the video frames.
i know this is still a very very proof of concept but it is very promising.
I'll keep you posted when a testable program is ready
greetings

That's great progress. I no nothing about makin apps but I am very good messing with my devices I guess I follow directions well so when I say this it might sound stupid but I had a idea maybe it will work
The PSP runs at max 333 MHz all of the android devices are atleast 800mhz I have a inspire running at 1.6 GHz so I think I would be fine. Now is there a way to take the locationfree player prx files that are found in the PSP and edit them to work on the android. I don't know if u have a PSP but I am able to extract those prx files out of the PSP and they also available online
What I am saying is to make some sort of half ass PSP emulator just to run locationfree player. The PSP has a emulator for the PSP called booster wich puts the PSP firmware on the PSP memory card to run old PSP firmware. Locationfree works with this emulator I don't know if any if this will work or help you with your code but I can get you any of these files if needed
I am so glad you are working on this . When I heard Sony was making the xperia I was so happy cause I thought they would implement the lfp but they dropped the ball with lack of support
Sent from my Inspire 4G using XDA App
Well i guess the prx does not help me much and emulating the PSP on the Device would be a completely different level of complexity.
My biggest problem currently is to decode the MPEG4 Frames on the android device since i don't yet know how to feed the raw mpeg4 frames to the media framework.
If that is not possible i am either going to use the NDK to link with the libavcodec library or i am going to make a repeater on the device that decrypts and resends the rtp stream locally so that it can be played with the media framework as if it were a normal network stream.
Just found this..
Great news.. I'll donate for an app that works..
Although it sounds like you are making this for yourself as well.
Let me know if there is anything I can do..
Great thread is coming up 1st post on google when you search for lfp for android hopefully more people start seeing it cause I know a lot of people have lfp

Well it will work on Linux (and maybe MacOS) too since i am trying to keep it as general as possible. Currently it is written in pure python which i am porting to android with the python-for-android package, but it is still incredibly slow (and without audio). If it really is not possible with a python only version then i have to jump over my shadow and do a java version.
I'll keep you posted.

Run Apps Side-by-Side?

Hi,
Not sure if this has been discussed before.. but with my tablet I am constantly running into the need for switching between apps quickly. While this is done easily enough, it would be nice to have more than one application open on the screen at a time. While browsing the web for something that fulfills this, I stumbled upon this video: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=MedNfbKVMSM
This is exactly what I need! While this is not an app, this is something that I would love to have. Does anyone have any similar applications they use? Or any work around? I heard that CM9 might have Cornerstone included.. that would be very nice.
Thanks!
That is a very interesting concept. Would be great to enhance productivity. Bout to check out their site.

EDIT: some info...

EDIT2: Downloaded the zip from github. Looks like a flashable zip, but I'm not taking any chances. No sense in bricking! Maybe someone more educated on this stuff can chime in.
This is something a developer must work into their rom. Just hope that in the future a Rom has one baked into it (that is if you unlock/flash cwm and such).
Please do not request it in the dev section though
I know there was some discussion last week about this and the possiblity of it being incorporated into CM9, but I'm not sure where it ended up.
I know there was a discussion from one of the Google engineers urging people not to do it with ICS (as cornerstone is open source now).
Might want to do a google search to see what comes up.

this would be amazing, I cant wait to see what the devs come up with now that we can unlock this baby.
As we have the bootloader unlock tool, sooner or or later there will be a rom with something like this integrated Cant wait!!
Google should be doing something like that on their own, this is genius. Also its perfect on a 1280x800 screen. More than enough room for multiple windows if you arrange it like cornerstone does.
Not sure it will arrive soon. I saw posts on Google+: this product is quite limited, you can only have the three windows, and can't do another way. Intregration in CM9 had begun but it seems quite hard to achieve, very hard programming stuff...
It may have only 3 windows, but I would settle for just 2 windows.. Just to have the ability to have more than 1 app open at a time.
The post from Cyanogen I read on G+ basically said they're not going to implement this. It takes major changes in source code and frameworks, and was really intended to be a commercial feature that OEMs might add into their roms. Doubt we'll ever see this in a CM build.

Well that is a bummer. Could have really used something to open multiple windows...
Personally I would much rather see a true multi-windowed environment such as the one by wind River (http://www.theverge.com/2012/1/7/2688901/android-multi-windowing-wind-river-software-modules) or Ixonos (http://hothardware.com/News/Ixonos-Creates-MultiWindow-Solution-For-Android/)
These are true windowed environments, and make much more sense to me on a larger (tablet) screen.

What can I use the Lapdock for, now that I am on CMx?

The good old Smiley, to make the reading happier:
I am looking for suggestions.
What could I use my Lapdock for, now that I made the switch to CyanogenMod?
Is there a good solution for making the VNC'ed ARM Ubuntu (look for Ubuntu Installer in the Play Store) work better with the touchpad? Should I sell it? Is there a solution to make remote control apps such as TeamViewer or Splashtop integrate with the Lapdock's keyboard and touchpad? Is there any way to make the device switch to Tablet mode without rebooting? That would be rather interesting to see. By the way, the CM9 ROM I am currently running has got Landscape HDMI working flawlessly, so that should not be an issue...
PS: Please do not ignore this thread. Any suggestions are welcome! (Use your common sense though)

I've struggled with the same question on my photon.. If there's working hdmi rotation on your CM, you can still use it for typing out documents, etc. I also used the mirror mode to watch movies on a larger(than phone) screen in bed.
But eventually I just decided to go back to a blur rom and use ubuntop (which is awesome) while waiting for official ICS and someone hopefully porting ubuntu 12.04 to webtop..

Maybe they are waiting for the unified linux/android kernel 3.4 this would most certainly make it easier to port and updates trivial.

Currently, I use it for watching movies as well, and I am looking forward to pairing a Wii Remote and/or a DualShock® 3 to my Atrix™, so that I can play some games such as GTA III and Shadowgun (Max Payne *-*) on the big screen.
I was happy with Blur until the day I ran into that tempting CM9 thread. I did not know what smoothness and responsiveness really were. Blur was the smoothest I thought it could ever get... But I was wrong, and now I have to choose between fluidity and Webtop.
I actually went back to Blur some months ago, but unfortunately, prolonged use of ICS can cause dependence. Believe it or not, I was pretty happy with Blur. Webtop was working flawlessly, I even had BackTrack installed, but then came the relapse: I could no longer resist to ICS. I am now back to CM9, and with it comes my dilemma...
I am looking for a way to use the Atrix™ as a more desktop-ish platform when docked (especially to the Lapdock). I believe the ideal would be Ubuntu through a local VNC client, or a remote desktop app, I just wish they would play nicer with the keyboard and touchpad...
Basically, something like a key mapper (easy-to-use, I am still unable to figure out WiiMoteController's key mapping scheme) for Lapdock's hardware. We could make a keyboard-powered Ouya!
What still concerns me though, is that games would not be optimized for it e.g. Minecraft PE, games where the camera angle for example, is controlled by dragging the screen, so it would have to be a really powerful, but easy-to-use key mapper, and since you can't have everything in life, I'm afraid I'm asking for much...

When the official Ubuntu for Android was announced, even though an Atrix 2 was used for the hands-on part, on the project's official hotsite... It was clearly an Atrix™ 4G standing there on the dock. The differences between our device's design and the Atrix 2's or the Defy's (Defy+'s) are not that obvious, but they are, indeed, noticeable.
You do know what that means, don't you? It means it is almost certain that our device will be on the first batch of officially supported devices!
I don't if the Atrix™ is still there, but if it's not, I can try to find the screenshot I took if you'd like.

I have never thought I'd say this but, "Please don't get off-topic". I'd appreciate it if this gets settled in a new thread or via PM.
Anyway, you said "stock UbunTop", I could be wrong, but I think it's either stock or UbunTop, which is a mod born right here on our neighbor forum, Android Development.
If yours is really stock, I suggest you get BackTrack from the BackTop project, I don't it's got aircrack built-in, and I was unable to install it, so unless you're an experienced hacker, don't get too excited with BackTrack's features, but my point is: It is amazingly faster than Webtop, it seems lighter, I used to be able to run more than 3 different apps simultaneously...
If yours is really running UbunTop I'm afraid I cannot assist you, since webtop2sd never worked for me and BackTop and WebtopMOD were the only I could ever manage to get working on my device...

I can answer this. What he meant is that you should use Paranoid. Paranoid is a rom thats an hybrid of a phone an a tablet, in short words, you can activate tablet mode for some apps, while some other apps still run in phone-mode, for the ease of use.
What I actually meant was to give a name and a designation, which I did.

But yes in short it can give you a tablet UI on lapdock.

Simple coding for a dumb noob

So, as the title suggests I know absolutely nothing about coding, basically, and I was wanting to either learn some basic stuff/ have someone make a few(or one combined) apks.
I was wanting to create a few apps that are just basic commands that would do a few things I'd like. Yes, I'm aware that these exist on the marketplace, but many of them are full of stuff that I don't care about/ don"t want and just needlessly take up space with flashy backgrounds and stuff.
1) I want a simple one click on, one click off button to turn on the led flashlight for my phone, a widgetesque kind of thing
2) I want a simple programmable stop watch countdown timer(I imagine this one would be a lot more labor intensive so I'm really not expecting anything for this one, but if someone has made their own that's really simple and basic I might like it)
I don't know much about coding but from what I've read its a simple code to turn the flash on and off, also, I don't even need the app to open up a new window or anything, it could just be a little icon you push to turn on the flash light and push again to turn it off.
I appreciate comments, even if they're just to say something like, "Are you dumb, this stuff is way over your head" or "Learn it yourself noob"

Sent from my Galaxy Nexus running Android 4.2 JB
Well, I've heard of eclipse but I don't know what it is, so, no, haha.
I recommend you follow this tutorial:
http://developer.android.com/training/basics/firstapp/index.html
Eclipse is an IDE, wich makes it a LOT easier for beginners to develop.
Download Eclipse (I'm using Eclipse Juno) and just follow that tut.
You'll be fine, I started development 4 weeks ago, and that was my first start
Sent from my Galaxy Nexus running Android 4.2 JB
I'm interested in learning how to develop apps also i do know a little about Linux and i do have eclipse set up I'm going to check out this tut .have a question though i noticed you stated you started 4weeks ago how are you a recognized contributer? Just curious

I have projects for PC too: StudioAndroid
It can almost do anything you want, check it here: bit.ly/SA-XDA
If you meant "why are you already RC?": that's because of my project. But you could be RC after 4 weeks development too, trust me!
If you meant "why are you still RC?":
My app is only for students in my province/state. Therefore I didn't publish it on XDA, and also not yet on Play Store.
The android developer site is really the best place to start

Wow. Cool I'll check it out

Sweet, thanks, I'll definitely look into that, thanks for the link.

-ps My phone is a rooted Samsung Galaxy Ace S5830.

As far as apps go, you could always use notification toggle from play store. Fully customizable, stays in your pulldown, and shows only what you want it to

[Community]A call to arms, well devices....

The Goal
To bring a new standard to the android platform, destroy, improve, rebuild. also, to put aside our egos and opinions and to work together as a community. if you dont like it you can always not use it!
>The journey, I my self will say if you just want the end product please leave this isnt the place. this is here to teach not to give.
Planned features
>Implement WebOS, FFOS or B2G in the the android platform. this is not another rom. it's a new firmware.
>Better multitasking, or true multitasking
>better handling of how the framework corresponding with the system. e.g. caching commonly used thing's for better load time over a crappy connection.
> a patch method so this can be merged with other UI's.
!Want to help?!?!
granted you may doubt yourself, dont just dont. anyone is free to contribute suggest etc. to make things easy here's a template. if you suggest something and it is not in this type of format, sorry it'll be ignored.
:UI
:System
:Hardware/software (E.g Lefty Mode. swapping the buttons layout to fit those who are left handed)
Ideas so far
MIUI theme chooser, say what you will it's a large customization option.
A new UI concept. if you have ideas just copy paste the format and add what you think is good/
Developers working on this
I will update this I ask that any dev interested message me via xda's pm system. title it [community]

this OP is subject to change, as more information is collected
thread gathered information
Web OS features, such as?
Social intragration into the android platform, e.g. Facebook, twitter G+ the mobile websites of these perform better than the apps, if we string some apis together for pictures sharing/posting and just load a webpage event in the "Social app" e.g. web.event.load="m.facebook.com" and share.event.activity.camera.post"userdefined_image _id"
suits vs folders string app categories together such as phone, mms, IM. tools calc, gps maps so on so forth. most likely will be a default.xml listing to categorize these into the proper groups. gapps wont be included cause the rom will be AOSP so im thinking calling external apks in a nice defined layout with gesture controls to switch
Focal points
Statusbar, I think It should do more. it's accessed from most apps and important things should go there, not just notifications. a simple mms grid layout with input for mobile number and text input also a list of unread messages. this could also push over to im services.
launcher: the dockbar should be optional imo, im thinking just have the all apps list in a corner with along press the dock pops out, also scroll able. so not just 5 apps sit there (some people dont like having apps on screen.
widgets: yea they're a thing to consider. as for the sense on other launchers, itd be easier to make widgets that look like it than integrate the actual ones
configuration. I think a major lacking point of android is user mapping for key's, why dont we have a leftie option? we all arent right handed. ill keep things in the thread as is so others can express there thoughts and add to this op will be updated later tonight.
OP/OC
So I see that our device has a huge collection of developers such as myself and many others. so I got to thinking (well the ambien did) and I thought (or it) that if all of us joined together and made a community driven rom (im talking better than the synergy collab here people) not just a rom but a little bit of the spirit that drives us enthusiast, noobs kangers scriptkids drunks stoners hell even moderators, any one who loves the ability of a rooted device. if we all came together put aside our differences and alliances just to bring something new, something innovative im not talking about some dinky apk that changes a few features on sense no im talking about something brand spanking new something that will make other device owners envy our device we can do it if we come together and work as a whole for the greater good, or should I say rom?
well who's with me?
noobs, themers users developer lurkers etc come forward step up lets see what ya got! call me a dreamer call me w/e I could care less. this could be the next big thing or the next nothing, it is up to you. ask not what your developer can do for you, but what you can do for your device

BUT this ain't about me or you or kangers or whatever, this is about something bigger then that!

put aside the differences and focus on collaborating to get more out of our device(s) the one thing that holds back developers is the ego and politics. so lets do away with that, thanks
