No signal when switching 3G to 2G. - TG01 General

As the title really, my phone has always done it. Whenever it switches from 3G back down to 2G (Automatically when moving through reception areas) my phone will loose signal for a second or two. While this isn't a problem, sometimes it can loose signal upto a minute! (then any txt sent while the phone is off doesn't get delivered until a few hours afterwards) This gets VERY VERY annoying!
I have tried it with an Orange and O2 UK sim. I have tried it with the stock rom and a cooked rom.
My question is, does anybody elses TG01 do this as well?

I think mine does the same thing.
I never noticed it happen in the UK, but out in Australia where there's much less 3G coverage (or much more 3G congestion), it seems to happen fairly regularly.

Anyone else!? I really need to know if another TG01 will experience the same problems or if it's just mine when I send it back!!

Vondafone Netherlands

I just switched from Tmobile to Vodafone and before, the mobile network was always H and now on Vodafone, it goes between 3G and H. Does anyone else who has Vodafone experiencing this? It seems weird that it would be switching between the two. Maybe Tmobile just had better HSPA coverage....?
I'm on vodafone NL too. Indeed it switches between the H and the 3G. I noticed though that it only switches to H if you are actually using the connection, otherwise it just stays on 3G. Try updating the weather for instance, you'll see it switching.
That's what I noticed as well, I just thought it was strange. Good to know though.
What do you think of their coverage? I just switched, so maybe that might have something to do with it, but last night I couldn't get any service in my bedroom but with Tmobile, I had a full signal...
I live in noord-holland, and coverage is pretty good. Wherever I am I get at least 3G. Vodafone hasnt been very reliable though. There were two crashes on their network a few weeks ago that crippled the data network but they fixed those errors within a couple of hours, so nothing to really worry about. No problems since.
Same here in the UK with T-Mobile.
When I first had the phone I'd almost never see 3G, just H or G. Now, I regularly get 3G but as soon as I start to use the data connection it usually switches to H.
I thought at first it was a result of me upgrading the radio, but I'm not so certain now. However, data speeds seem good so I'm not concerned.

Dave

[Q] Not able to connect to Internet

Wondering if you can help me.
In my office my colleuge and I have an hd2 on UK o2 pay monthly. Untill about a month a go we were getting HSPDA internet access. Now we are only getting EDGE. I contacted o2 and they stated that the area is a very high coverage area and we should be getting HSPDA.
What makes matters more interesting is two other colleuges in my department in the same building, one has an iphone 3 and the other has an iphone 4, both guys are on uk 02 pay monthly and are getting full 3g access. I am getting 3g and hspda in other areas.
Does anybody know why we are getting edge instead of at least 3g?
thanks.
I had a very simillar issue, so perhaps the solution I found will work for you. A co-worker of mine bought an HD2 (immediately after seeing mine). In many areas at work the reception was terrible. I also noticed that at home, when I first had the phone I got 3G often, but after a few weeks I was suddenly stuck on the EDGE network (If I got any reception at all). Since messing around with the Android port I was forced to flash a new Radio ROM and it seems that was my problem all along. At home I now get constant full bars HSPDA. At work I get reception in places that I never did before. My coworker (still using stock radio) is having the same reception issues I used to have.
So my advice is try a few different radios and see if that helps.

Yea we did try that the other night thinking it might be a radio issue we went from 2.5 up to 2.12. What rom / radio did you use if you dont mind me asking?
Does anybody else have any ideas? This is happening with two ok uk hd2's in the office! My colleuge and I have tried multiple rom and radio upgrades but nothing is working but my other colleuge on iphone can get 3g sitting beside me
ive had this issue too, never knew how to fix it :/
AGHHHHHHHHHHHH Going to call o2 tomorrow and tell them I want to swap for a new phone, I am not getting the service I should be!!!
Ive tried just about everything I can think of. Ive tried updating the ROM, Radio, rilphone.dll - also tried going back to stock rom, yet my colleuge sits on his iphone right beside me on 3g its madness!
have you tryed puting your phone into flight mode then .ack on again let thephone pick the strongest hsdpa mast signal up. welcome to tbd way o2 works lol we get it all the time in york and leeds
That is a very interesting idea. I will try and report back thanks man!
I am really getting no ware with this. Phoned O2 and they tested phone in my network said that I should be ok I should have full hspda access, my colleuge is sitting on iphone with ull 3g and has a o2 dongle which has hspda access. I am getting fulll signal strength, changed the sim card and tried multiple radio and dll file combos and this is driving me nuts. Any help would be appreciated.
I have been doing some further testing and found something interesting. When I am at home and can connect to HSPDA. I went into the base band and changed it to WMCDA got full access. I then changed it to GSM band and got Edge. I then went into work to test it and tried to force it to WMDCDA but it wouldn't even connect at all no coverage.
I tried it back on GSM and full coverage but only edge support. Any ideas?

[Q] Orange Mozart weak signal reception ....

Finally got my Mozart from Orange UK yesterday. Great phone and Windows seems serious this time
although its less than 24 hrs I'm using this phone but I'm not impressed by the signal reception. I watched it at my flat, at work, while driving, alongside road; but I'm not getting the signal bars what I used to receive on my Desire. Any body else facing the same experience?
Yeah I experience the same with my Orange France Mozart, I have less signal bars particularly in 3G/3G+. But I would say that it's only due to the algorithm used to evaluate the signal because on my other phone I've a full signal at the same place.
hmm, well for areas where full signal strengh availalbe then you lose 1-2 bars on mozart, its ok. However, where there are only 1-2 bars availalbe and mozart showing none and you cannot make a call, its a problem.
As far as I am concern Orange UK reception sucks. Compared to the HD2, the Mozart appears to have better reception even on such a bad network. And no for some reason the device won't roam to t-mobile.
Agreed, that's the other observation taht it doesn't pick T-Mobile signal and no "R" appears on the phone.
I'm having signal issues with my Mozart as well. I had no issues with call dropping on my previous phone.
Have you checked the settings
Can't say I have had any problems roaming on on t-mobile/orange.
Does it help if you go to settings..mobile network and changed data roaming to 'roam'?
I also presume you have opted in to using t-mobile on the Orange website (if that is not a dumb question).
Dam0c
Compared to my old Touch Diamond the T-Mobile Mozart I'm playing with has weaker reception but higher battery drain ...
data roam set to no roam is for data connection. The Orange/T-Mobile sharing is only for voice and sms I believe.
I did notice that phone does pick up Orange/T-Mobile signal but without any visual sign on the status bar, you need to see it setting area.
But the signal reception is really bad, with call droppings as well.
I switched from t-mobile UK to orange UK just to get the mozart early, so far the only disappointment is the signal, I assumed that was orange. Before on 3G i was clocking a good 2MB/s with t-mobile, now my very best speed i can get is about 50KB/s, I'm hoping this is a phone issue that will be sorted once updates are released...
The Orange/T-Mobile sharing does have data roaming but it's GPRS only. I did have roaming working when I set it up, but it seems to have stopped working again now.
One thing to remember with the displayed signal strength is just that, displayed. 3 bars on WP7 device could be 4/5 on another simply because they display signal levels differently.
Received sms from Orange today:
" As you've cahnged your handset, the experience of picking up T-Mobile signal might be different. For answers on any question go to orange.co.uk/share"
I've not had any signal issues at all I reside in a very remote area...
The signal so far is much better the the iphone which i have, which always drops calls...
Got the text message from orange last week as well. I seem to be covered by T-Mobile in areas that Orange fails. Orange reception is pathetic in central London. worse of all, during peak hours i can get full signal but calls to my number are never routed to my device and I can't make phone calls due to poor availability.
Anyway T-Mobile 3G appears to be faster than Orange
Also worth to mention that HTC has released new ROM updates with a new radio stack and SPL (and possibly drivers) but Orange UK havent released anything yet.
its been almost a week with Mozart and I'm quite sure now that it's actually Orange signals. But let's wait when Orange sends the updates.

[Q] Sudden loss of signal

I'm on Vodafone UK, at some point this afternoon lost my signal, just had the no signal icon when I checked my phone.
I didn't change any settings, it was working fine received a couple texts, went to reply later and had no signal.
1st I tried going to settings->wireless settings and switching phone off and back on, no joy.
2nd tried Switching phone off and on, no joy
3rd tried settings->menu->all setting->personal->phone->network change network selection to maual, then select vodafone UK from list, still no joy
4th put network selection back to automatic, no joy.
5th turned data connection off no joy
Put my sim in girlfriends unlocked Nokia worked fine and I could make a call.
Returned sim to my phone.
I have noticed it will stay on no signal for ages, then will be trying to find a signal, will appear to have found just a phone signal (full strength) but attempting to make a call will just sit on the dialling screen for ages but never connect and then gives up without an error message after about 40 seconds. My data connection is off when it finds a signal, if I switch it back on it seems to be trying to connect GPRS then after a while back to no signal. Leaving it alone when it appears to have found a signal it stays for anywhere between a few seconds and minutes before going back to no signal.
Sorry my post isn't easier to read, been up since 4am getting tired now, and my phone is doing my head in.
Just to stress again my phone went from working to not just sitting on the table no settings changed or anything. Please help
I had a similar problem to this after flashing a ROM. My signal will be ok for an hour or 2 then disappear, never to return. If I switch 3G off it seems to solve it for me.
Me too
Xenton, I'm on VF UK with 1.72 ROM, and also have random signal drop outs. It happens even when static in the rear part of my house where I can see for 30+ miles and must have line of sight to multiple masts. The coverage maps on VF's website say the phone should be getting good signal, but sometimes, as you say it drops out, to return soon, later, or (but only very occasionally) not at all. I hard reset my phone a short time ago, so I'm pretty sure it's down to the ROM/radio. I've the feeling it's something we just have to live with, unless we wait (forever?) for the VF UK 3.14 ROM or install the WWE version.

Hi,
Thanks for the reply. At work this morning my phone was working fine, then when I returned home same problems, no resets or changing to settings. All this makes me think it is a problem with VF, I have posted on the eforum but this is my second day without a reliable signal at home now after 2 years faultless coverage at home. If it keeps up, I may have to drive to a signal and call VF. Did you get your phone through VF, if so you should get onto them for a replacement or repair if it is your phone.
One other curious thing today at work I got some txts from VF which automatically change setting for mobile internet and picture messaging. They still worked fine at work, but I hadn't requested the settings be sent and the old ones worked fine, but then so do these new ones, just not at home, where I am mostly signal-less.
Xenton,
I used to be unable to send MMS's until I hard reset my phone. Oh, and despite requesting the MMS settings via the customer services and the VF web site, nothing ever arrived on any of the occasions it was supposed to.
I'm out of my initial contract after a year, so think I'll do well to get a new hand set. It's more of a relatively minor annoyance, as opposed to what seems like your more significant issue.
It only really happens a noticeable amount at home, so I’d put it down to something to do with the number of cells my phone could presumably see, and perhaps it getting ‘confused’ (?).
I’d be interested to hear what you find out on this, if you reach a resolution/find a solution.

Occasional data connection hangs on 3G/HSPA

I have an I9300 which I use on Vodafone UK. The phone was a sim-free handset, CSC=BTU
I'm currently running firmware XXEMC2, rooted
I sometimes get an issue where my HSPA data connection will stall. All I'll see is the "up" arrow flashing for around 2 minutes, but no data will be downloaded.
After around this period of time, or if I switch phone off/on line the connection will start working again
A few times I've noticed when this occurs the data connection symbols will disappear completely - so perhaps the phone or network is totally timing out.
This has occurred with a variety of firmware levels back to XELLA and before. My suspicion is that it's a network issue, but was wondering if anyone sees this on any other network.
I am considering trying one of the vodafone branded firmware's MODEMs in case there's anything they tweak that might work better.

I've now tried a variety of modems (including vodafone fw / modem) & full firmware but continue to see this issue from time to time.
If left alone after something like up to 5 minutes the connection will drop and recycle. No idea if that's phone or network initiated.
It is however VERY frustrating. My strong suspicion is that this is a VODAFONE NETWORK ISSUE not a handset issue. Of course as my phone is a sim free phone it may be tricky convincing vodafone of this fact.
Has anyone else seen these issues, especially on vodafone uk?
It *seems* to occur more on a few particular cells (well I notice the ones at gym for example) and less (possibly never) on suresignal, and just occasionally at work (small cell?) Overload on the cells is my suspicion ... classic vodafone.
I've never noticed this on 3UK, though that's been on a nexus S (currently lost ). If only 3UK had coverage at work I'd switch back easily. Vodafone has broader geographic coverage but I'm convinced the network is more flakey
When you have an UP arrow, that is upload. This signifies a connection going out from your phone to the network. If this hangs for a while and does not produce any connection back (DOWN arrow), this would definitely signify a network issue to me. Sometimes on the S3, the signal bars say there is a signal when there isn't or there is a signal but the connectivity between you and the network is non-existent
There are several things that can cause this. It can be Mast, Network, SIM, Modem, baseband... Its hard to say. All you can do is rule them out one at a time.
My gut feel is network too. It's definately happening with a good decent signal when stationary.I need to check more closely but it also seems location dependent (but not single location)
