Hi fellas,
Recently got a brand new QTEK 8500 for my nephew, just 16 right now but the deal was nice so I went ahead. He's been delighted with the phone, at least until this afternoon...
A while ago he has shown me his broken/cracked external screen. Being young and somewhat careless I've told him he probably hit the phone against something without noticing, yet he's kept telling me that was not the case; the screen still has the original protection film and not a single scratch. After speaking with my sister (nephew's mother), I got a bit suspicious so went and googled some evidence about the fragility of this phone's outer display. Check here for example:
Cingular 3125 too fragile? Cracked external LCD
Cinguler 3125 external screen broken, Replacements?
Cingular 3125 | Comments
You see where I ended up... It's surprising I haven't been able to find any related thread here. I'm really wondering if none of you has had a single cracked screen from regular use on this device
Anything to tell anyone? I'm going to email HTC tomorrow and see what they have to say about this; not putting much hope tough
Cheers,
Barkuti
I am on of the first QTEK 8500 User in Austria (i think so LOL) my device is in Business use over 2 Years!! My device have hit the ground ... i have kick the phone on the wall after some on bug me a lot ... what ever.
no damage display
no damage mechanismus
work realy good
put the only thing i do ... if i put any handy in my pocket ... no keys or other items like lighter are in this pocket at the same time. if i put it in a bag ... the same.
the display is robust like razor v2 or better
No Issues for over four years. Possible cause for your screen failing is flexing as this is the weekest mode. Particular problems with tight pockets, dropped into a book bag or back pack against other objects, etc...
i must say for the months that i used my startrek, the case got rather beat up, but had no problems with the screens. the phone works great (i love the clamshell, but missed the touchscreen and keyboard of ppc's). More than likely he hit the corner of something that landed on the ext. display
I had a similar thing happen int he first week of owning the phone. It had been in my pocket and I don't recall hitting against anthing, but the screen was shattered internally. No marks of any sort on the outside.
Major bummer.
The same old story.Mine too had a cracked lcd without even letting the lid to close on its own force I was closing it it very gently. Some of them might be defective (Different production lines?).They have so many reports but they will not accept it
From day one when I got my Folio the right bottom of the screen is a bit coming out of the black "frame" (1-2mm). But lately its getting worser and tonight when I hold the Folio on that spot like usual, the top plastic layer suddenly cracked.
The screen itself is unharmed and as for the touch part, all still work fine.
This should be covered by the warranty I hope. Looks like a poor build quality. Only got the device for like 2-3 weeks. *sigh*
Should I flash it back to the stock rom? Since its running Dexter's Mod 1.3C now.
They only need to replace the plastic layer and maybe the touch part, idk.

Some pics of the crack, the board doesn't allow me to post links because my post count.
Well i would say hold it more carefully, the screen is glass and cracks like glass (if you want it to).

I am from Belguim too, and i have the same thing!
It didn't (yet) cracked here but still...
I thought it was because I always hold it with my left hand, normally warranty should fix the problem for you. (as long as the screen isn't cracked!!)
Did a factory reset and flashed it back to the stock rom. Don't want anyone getting hand on my "personal" data like logins/emails etc when you know how confidential ppl work at repair centers.
The screen itself is untouched, touch works fine even in the cracked area's. It is really that plastic/glass layer on top. I'm taking it back to the store tomorrow.
Killerbie, watch out around that area and don't put too much pressure on it when you hold it there. I was holding it with my right thumb (and palm of course) and then it suddenly happened. The layer doesn't fit very well in the black frame around it.
I just came back from the store and they refuse to take it under warranty. Even though everything works, touch part (even in the cracked area's), screen is untouched (no liquid leaking or spots), etc.
I'm going to call Toshiba Support directly and see what they say. Since I'm not the only one with that 1-2mm popping out at the right corner. It is just a matter of time the glass cracks on other's Folio.
I've also added more pics and a video showing the touch part is still working fine. But I don't dare to push on the cracked area to prevent further damaging.

Despite being very carefully with my hardware, I noticed the screen is beginning to come loose. It's not as bad as I've seen on your pictures but worrying nevertheless. It's only 1 month old.
Looks like the folio 100 don't like being handled with just one hand.
Did you contact Toshiba, and what did they say?
Well after a couple of phone calls to Toshiba they agreed to pick it up and gave me an RMA. After a couple days I got an Email with some information and RMA number written in bad Dutch.
Saying that I have to print and sign this document stating that I agree to be charged in case the repair-center deem that the broken glass top is not covered by the warranty.
Due to that phrase and the fact if I sign, I'm screwed either way, because the device has to be fixed anyway. Also in the email they mentioned that I have to sent it to Czech Republic. Means that would cost me 44 euro to UPS it (sending faulty devices by regular post packs is a big no no).

So I mailed them back that on the phone the lady spoke of a pick up etc... No reply for one week. So I decided it to give it another try at the store.
This time it was a different person at the counter, I did my story, said that I contacted Toshiba and they agreed to repair it etc. And now its at their repair center for a week now.
And right after 2 weeks I sent that mail to Toshiba about that pickup, they finally replied back, saying, indeed a pick up will be done by UPS or TNT... and that they will contact me for the pick up.
So from calling to Toshiba, to get the device picked up... will take 2 weeks! *unacceptable*
So right now I'm ignoring Toshiba and hoping that the store is really going to repair it under warranty. Since its not a crystal breach. Just the top layer(glass/plastic, etc).
Glad I'm not the only one with this problem, mine is just the result of the problem.
Hm, sounds promising...not.
As said mine is not as bad as yours and my screen isn't cracked (yet).
I'm gonna send a mail to the shop I bought it from (Dynabyte NL), at this point it's acceptable but I don't want to wait till the problem gets bigger.
Thanks for your respond and I hope it works out for you.

Mine is also bulging, and it has never been handled with just one hand... Actually, it has never been handled, because I just bought it yesterday, and I have not even unsealed the plastic bag; touching it you can clearly feel the bulge, so I believe it is not that the screen comes unstuck after use, but that there is something pressing it outwards, that causes it to bulge first, and to crack later on. Of course, mine is going out tomorrow; I will exchange it for a non-pregnant folio, if available, because there are several people reporting the same problem, and in any case, will take out insurance on it; that way any potential trouble will be covered, either by the guarantee or by the insurance.
Glad that there are other people having this problem too. That was my first impression to, that something under the glass/screen is pushing it 1-2mm out. And after a while it sticking more out due to usage of the tablet.
Right after I got my tablet accepted at the store for repair, I went inside and checked the demo device if it had the problem too. And indeed, there it was also sticking out. I'm really disappointed in Toshiba
My screen is coming out a little bit too. At the Bottom, middle or slight right of the middle.
Funny thing is that my touchscreen sometimes just stops responding and then I have to slightly press that plastic frame part on the bottom and instantly after pushing it the touchscreen works again. So the tablet basically wants me to push it on that bulge.
Screen gapping away 2mm at the bottom
The same with my folio. Yesterday I RMAed it for repair.
The screen at the bottom is about 2mm gapped away so that it could be easily teared off by an accident. I didn't noticed it at first because I use original lether toshiba case.
Definitely it was the real cause of all my problems with responsiveness. Folio was often unresponsiveness at the bottom edge. After I pressed the gapped away plastic surface back down into its correct position then responsiveness was OK for some time until the gap reappeared again.
I think that everybody should check his/her folio. Maybe it could be a wide spread problem.
p.s. And all the time I was thinkink that it was a SW problem :-(
I asked in this Thread if maybe someone knows how to repair this as this is an Hardware issue. Maybe it's just a wrong screw that pushes the touchscreen out of the frame.
Took my folio to the shop today, it's going back to Toshiba for repair.
Got the option to trade mine in for a demo-model, but unfortunately it had the same problem. It's probably gonna take some weeks before I hear what's gonna happen. Repair, replace or nothing, we'll see.
I don't think it has to do with screws, while this problem is always on the bottom side it's not always on the exact same place.
Looks like some sort of tension, mine was ok when I bought it, one month later it's loose from the bottom-middle all the way to the right side.
Mine has been sitting at the repair center for more than a week... no new updates at all... sigh.

From day one the glass is sticking out a little bit at the right bottom of the device. The customer didn't return it while he has noticed that. By pressing on that spot, the glass cracked during a normal use. The customer has already contacted Toshiba and they "agree" to repair the device under warranty.

It is some kind of tension/pressure squeezing the screen together, like it doesn't really fit the frame.
So like Tobr said, everyone should check it out and report it to this thread so in case the store or Toshiba is charging you for the repairs, you can at least print or point them to this thread, saying that is a general problem.
According to the shop it could easily take one month before it's back, so I'll just wait and hope for the best.
Checking your device is indeed a good idea, an if you can live with the problem maybe get a written statement that your not responsible when the screen decides to crack.

I was able to introduce a thin peace of plastic between the frame and the screen and its much better now.
This way the plastic cover wont break and it responds way better.
I doubt that toshiba fixes this by replacing anything. If they used their brain they could solve this before it brakes
Well it must be a miss calculation of the sizes or places where the components are placed. So if they replace/fix the screen, the chances are big the bulging is still there.
But according the the European warranty law, if some thing is repaired for the 3rd time within the warranty period, they have to give you a brand new device or your money back. Still 23months to go (the warranty) here. Its gonna be a long journey
Finally after almost 2 weeks, some updates at the status page of the repair center

So who knows, I might have it back somewhere next week. Other info on the page also mention "charged: 0.00EUR".
Lets hope it is 0.00EUR. Because on the phone with Toshiba themselves last time, they said replacing the screen will cost me 130.00EUR.

I take same glue and I fix it myself I know warranty is gone but at least I don't wait a month I will try to do some mod
I have a tiny little cluster of what look like pinholes on my screen. Hard to describe, but they are virtually invisible but you can see them with the screen off when in the right light.
Now, although this doesn't bother me, and I'm not worried about getting it replaced but this is supposedly a virtually indestructible screen.
To my point, if I decided to get it replaced, what is the warranty? Is it 1 year from purchase (it was a Three upgrade). Do I need to unroot just for screen replacement?
sent from somewhere over there
I had my screen replaced this week because light vertical line appeared on it.
As long as you in the EU, phone should be covered by two years warranty.
No idea if root will matter in your case, mine was not rooted and had official ROM on it.
Be careful though that SGSII screens roughly since end of 2011 are significantly inferior - they are darker and lack the optical anti-reflective coating. So if you bought your phone before of that you may want to reconsider.
Just a quick question. Anyone else have an issue with their screen cracking? My P9000 has developed a crack over the led. I didn't drop, knock or bump the phone. I've emailed support for advice. I'll keep this forum posted.
Update got a very prompt response. Two sentences
"Good day!
we are sorry to hear that, but screen will not crack by itself. it may have some physical damage on it."
No details of how to get a repair, that's it! Not the best customer service. I've replied enquiring about service centres, costs etc. and will update the post when I get more info. There are a few posts asking for similar details re. Screen replacement so the info will be useful for the community.
actually it's strange to think that a screen can brake by itself , can you post some pictures?
elephone customer care have already proved it's lower quality service . i don't know where you live but best solution imho is to give the phone to a local cinese phone repair shoop , here in my city there are a couple that repair - fix phones for low money and they also provide spareparts that arrive very quick and at low price thanks to it's black market channel, try to search one
I agree it's very unusual that the screen would break in this way, but I'm really very careful with all my devices and this has never happened before.
If Elephone say that this cannot happen then I'm not going to quibble, I'm more interested in repairing the phone. Sending it back to the seller for repair will be an interesting, long and probably prohibitively expensive process, but I'll make enquiries.
In other news Elephone are still working on a new ROM for the device, I took the opportunity to ask supplementary questions in my email  so the chatter on the forums about the 19/04 build being the last one can abate for a while.
The crack in question. Doesn't impair functionality and there's are no signs of impact
The only replacement display I found on the Web is this one https://m.aliexpress.com/item/32673463140.html Unfortunately I have no clue if this is an original display and if could place it on my phone by myself
Your phones has physical damage along the bottom side of the metal frame can clearly see where its been scraped. You sure it didn't drop or get dragged along something while face down? Hopefully there's an OEM replacement as its just the glass that seems to be damaged not the LCD
Thanks I wouldn't know how to even begin the repair but it's useful info.
I had a similar small crack appear on mine which had not been dropped I assumed it had been knocked whilst in my pocket, But then today i put my phone in my pocket to drive and collect the kids when i got to the school i had 3 additional cracks I assume its something to do with the size of the screen and it not flexing.
The new cracks now make it pretty tough to use the phone as they are affecting the touch functions, once i can unlock it i will take some photos to post.

Thank you. I'd almost convinced myself that I must have knocked the phone.
Events have taken a new turn. The left hand side of the screen now creaks and pops when you press on it. If I press sufficiently hard enough it stops creaking and popping, almost as if it is correctly seated again only to literally and audibly pop out again 5 minutes later.
I will post a video later, and will be contacting elephone with evidence that there is a design flaw with the device. I'll keep this forum updated on my progress.
thats weird thats where my spontaneous crack started images attached, the bottom one is under the glass but i think was the cause of the left side one.
Adding images as attachments as well given the URLS don't seam to be showing correctly.
Mine also has a minor crack on the screen, it's in a case and has not been dropped. There is no damage to the frame at all, I'm guessing it's from being in my pocket. The phone obviously isn't as strong as mainstream manufacturers. My crack is very faint in the top right corner and you really have to look at it in a certain light to see it.
If it gets worse, I'll buy a new phone (One Plus 3) and not look at this device again

Mine broke in my front pocket without impact. It was the aluminium frame that was bending and must have cracked under the stress. In hindsight I should have started putting the phone in my pocket the other way around. Ha ha!

I note the replacement screens have come down in price I may have to have a go at a repair.
Sent from my Z2 Plus using Tapatalk
So my Z5C slid off the table and barely struck something not even that hard but apparently at exactly the wrong angle and now the screen is broken. There is a huge broken part on the top going all the way across (and a few more spider veins outside the used area) and the bottom half of the touchscreen just plain does not work. I contacted SONY to ask what it would cost to repair and, while the response was a bit confusing (English as a second language I guess) they basically stated that they would not do even a paid repair of a broken screen on a Z5C apparently. I was told to find a third party to repair it. I have exactly zero confidence in doing a repair myself (for starters, I guess this means the digitizer is broken since the bottom half of the screen does not work and I've always heard those are a PITA to replace but also whenever I replaced the back on my Z3C it would inevitably come loose again and the last thing in the world I want is for the screen to be falling off all the time.)
So basically I need to at least find out how much it would cost. Preferably I'd like to find a local place too so I can just bring it in when I get up the money to actually do it. But I have no idea how even to find them. And they couldn't tell me anything (no officially licensed repair shops or anything like that.) The fact is, I don't even know what to look for to find someone at least semi-reputable. And once again, the last thing in the world I want is for my screen to start falling off the way all those Z3C backs did.
Also, by any chance would anyone have even just a rough idea how much it would cost? Obviously if it ends up being more than the cost of buying a new Z5C on eBay it would make more sense to do that (whenever I can afford it anyway, but geez.)

I bought a complete screen including the frame for 29 euros. You can do it using the tutorials on youtube. Its easy.
That literally was not my question.
Anyway, probably it would end up costing so much as to not be worth it. For now I'll probably have to count on just buying a new one whenever I can (well, that will be a while.)
BTW, in retrospect I suspect mine was actually a refurb after one such repair incorrectly sold as "new." The screen was kind of loose when I got it and never sat completely flat. Honestly I should have sent it straight back. Looking over it I suspect now that this is the reason it broke so thoroughly so easily from a very light drop off of a table (not even human height.) Because the screen wasn't sitting right that part was especially vulnerable and weaker and I notice that the line that went across went to the point where it was sticking up the most excessively. Ironically the screen now sits completely flat where it would not before after this break (which it shouldn't do if it were simply loose.) So this is part of the reason I'm not exactly super excited about the idea of repairs. I know from first-hand experience just simply trying to make a back stay on that the end result rarely can match the proper quality level and the screen is even more important. It has become a bit of a point of obsession for me probably because I've replaced the back so many times on my Z3C I've lost count and every single time it came loose again before eventually breaking. (At this point my Z3C back is a bunch of tape. I can't protect the camera because it needs something super clear sticking out a bit to allow it to move outward, so eventually it will probably get enough dust inside to break or something.)
Anyway, I have no desire to discuss trying to repair it myself. I was thinking maybe a professional can do better, but honestly the more I think about it the more I think I'd rather just save up and buy a new one. (I can get one for around $150 on eBay if I don't mind waiting a full month for shipping. My suspicion is that's actually not that much more than the repair cost if you add labor anyway.)
