[Q] Do I need "Active Sync" to use CustomRUU, or can it just be in the Tri-Color Boot Loader manager with the USB cable connected?
I assume you can flash without being in WM, if so, my WM install can stay very thin for android porting.

If you are going to flash by connecting to your computer via usb cable, and you are using a WinXP computer, you will need to flash via ActiveSync.
If a Vista or Win7 computer, you need the latest version of Windows Mobile Device Center installed and connected.
No, your phone does not need to be booted into WinMo to flash, you can also connect to your computer with your phone in bootloader, and then running the customruu,
(power the phone on while pressing volume down button, will see tri-color screen) but booting WinMo fully and connecting via ActiveSync or WMDC is recommended.
Or as an alternative, you can put your ROM on a small (I prefer 4gb class 2) sd card (not in any folder, just on the root of the card-preferably an empty card) and turn the phone on with the card in it the same way as if you were going into bootloader, and the phone should tell you what to do from there. (Just the ROM goes on the card, not the customruu.exe , only the file LEOIMG.nbh)
Just make sure you have HSPL installed, and make double sure you have a compatible ROM

Explain!
I have ugual problem, but i have flash in bootloader screen, without mytt, only connecting usb port and double clic to exe rom downloaded.
I am trying to flash from the bootloader to recover from an installation error on my Fuze. I've entered into the tricolor bootloader screen by holding down Vol.down and reset. Now, when I plug the phone into the computer, the computer recognize the phone as a Qaulcomm CDMA Technologies MSM, and is trying to install a driver for it (which it cannot find.) When I run the Custom_RUU, it does not find my Fuze and is showing a ERROR[260]: Connection.
What am I doing wrong? Do I need to find a driver for Qualcomm first? I searched, and it seemed that when you enter bootloader to flash, it is suppose to say USB at the bottom. Mine says Serial. Does that matter?
If more information is needed to troubleshoot:
SPL is SPL-1.90.OliNex
Phone is unlocked by using Olinex's unlocker
Rom was EnergyRom 3.0 Phoenix 51909
Problem was caused because I tried to install Studio Kuma Traditional Chinese Fonts on it. That program works flawlessly on a WM6.1. Of course, Energy 3.0 are WM6.5, hence causing the problem.
Any assistance is very appreciated.
Try sd card flashing
You have connect your device to your USB port and let it find the drivers. In order for it to download the drivers, you must have Activesync or Windows Mobile Device Center.
Once you have one of those downloaded, launch it and connect the device while it is running normally. Opt to connect via Activesync on your phone. You don't have to have these running in the future but you need it to find the drivers and install them. Leave the Activesync connection intact while you run the Flash program.
Once the phone reboots in bootloader mode, the PC will probably download some more drivers. The Flasher will probably time out while the drivers are being downloaded and installed. Keep trying.
Once the bootloader drivers are downloaded and installed, try to run the Flasher program again. Sometimes you'll need a reboot if something is hung up.
You SHOULD be able to reboot, put the phone in bootloader mode (Down + Power + Reset) and it should change "SERIAL" into "USB". Once it displays "USB" you are good to go. Load up the Flasher program and it should go all the way through without the assistance of ActiveSync or Mobile Device Center.
I always flash in bootloader mode, I just know the initial pairing is rough.
Well, I flashed from sd card, and the phone is working now. Thanks for everyone's replies.
This is a strange problem, I cant tell when it started but it did all of a sudden. When I try to connect my phone to my computer it all of a sudden does not recognize the device (it shows under USB in device manager as unknown device). This happens on my laptop and stationary one (XP and Windows Home Server). On my work computer and my girlfriends laptop (Windows vista) nothing happens at all. The only thing happens is my phone shows notification about HTC Sync (doesnt show the "mount SD card" option). I cant install modaco 2.x since it says it isnt signed when I try to run update.zip from "home+power" mode.
Anyone knows a solution? I really want to flash either modaco or the official HTC rom.
After upgrading my phone (T-Mobile Galaxy S Vibrant SGH-T959) to vibrantmtd #30, my laptop (HP EliteBook 8540p - Running Windows 7 Enterprise 64-Bit) no longer recognizes my phone as a USB device. There is literally no indication of Windows trying to load the phone as a USB device. I have tried everything I can think of to get the device to load as a USB drive on my laptop.
1. Rebooted the Laptop, several times
2. Uninstalled and reinstalled Samsung and Nexus USB drivers
3. Made sure my laptop was up-to-date on all patched
4. Tried with USB Debugging was checked/uncheck
5. Tried with multiple cables
6. Tried multiple USB ports (1.1, 2.0, and 3.0)
7. Used USBdeview to uninstall all USB devices on my laptop (also tried this on my home PC) and then let window reload the devices after a reboot.
8. Tried with multiple systems (both Windows 7 and XP 32/64 Bit) – including friends who have Galaxy S and Nexus Phones.
a. The only system that will try to load a USB driver is my home PC [Windows 7 Ultimate 64 Bit] and no matter what drivers I install the phone always comes up as an Unknown Device.
9. Tried going into download mode to use Odin to revert back to a 2.2 mod. I can only get into download mode using a physical jig and even then Odin will not connect to the device.
10. I can’t even load a different build of Cyanogenmod. I tried loading build #31. It downloads, prompts me with the three questions about backup, clear data, and cache. I have selected every possible combination of those selections and it will download the build and reboot try opening rom manager (too quick to see what it says) and then loads back into build #30.
I am at a loss as to why I cannot get the phone to be recognized as a USB device or be capable of further MODing. Any help would be appreciated
Thanks,
Michael

Do you have skype? It would make it easier for me to help you. If you're not comfortable with it, I'll just type everything
Try this, turn phone off completely, turn it on by holding these three.... vol up, vol down, power....let go of all three at the same time as soon as you see the Vibrant logo.
Edit.....do not have it plugged in at all while doing this.
Is this a bug with the nightly? Try an OLDER version.
Sorry, don't have skype.
I did your above steps and that puts me into ClockworkMod Recovery.. Was there something I need to do in here?

Nope, it's a driver and human error. Rom manager cannot go into recovery mode, you have to use three button combo.
It's stated by the cm7 team.
No, I checked. I was just able to go to build #31 by rebooting into clockworkmod and installing the build #31 zip from there. I did have to wipe data, install, and clear cache to get it take though.
Removed.. Agh, been awhile since cm7, not what I remembered.

Yes, now if you have downloaded a cm7 nightly on your sd card, do this.
Wipe data, factory reset
Wipe cache
Go to advanced, format system, cache, and data.m.
Go to install zip, choose zip from sdcard, select the downloaded cm7 nightly, select yes.
Then reboot phone, not reboot recovery. Leave it for 15 minutes, reboot, now use it.
After it's up and running, please please go into recovery mode the same way I posted, do this after you finish all the steps above!
Go into backup and storage and make a backup!! This will save your phone if future problems occur.....this is a nand backup.
Ok, I did all those steps, I have a backup now.

Awesome, this will save you from bricks or anything unfortunate.
Is your computer still not recognizing it?
Correct, still not recognized.
Open device manager, find device installation settings and make sure it's on find drivers automatically.
Open Windows Update, settings, check give me recommended/additional updates.
Use the usb software to uninstall the drivers, uninstall kies, or any samsung software.
Reboot......install this driver, turn off your compute, don't restart.
On your phone, settings, applications, development, make sure debugging is on.
Plug the phone into the usb and plug it into a new usb slot. Now turn on your computer with it plugged in.

Well for whatever reason, those steps seem to bring to life my USB port.
I performed all the above steps and when I powered on my PC after perform the steps, the phone was not recognized as a USB device until I unplugged the USB cable and plugged it back in. Now it is recognized on every port on my laptop.
Interesting other issue was that after I used Odin to revert to stock, if I powered off my phone it would not load anything (not even the splash screen) when I tried to power it on and I know it was at 90-100% battery power. The only way to get it to boot was to go back into download mode and use odin to reflash the OS. I did this 4 times with the same results, with different copies of Odin and the stock rom and I got the same result.
I decided I was too tired to figure it out, left it on after a flash (not plugged into anything) and now it will reboot fine.
I don't know what strange voodoo possesses my phone, but thanks for your help.
That's good to hear and no problem. By the way, I highly recommend using Heimdall to flash roms....I've had no problems with it. I don't use odin anymore.
Thanks, I have heard of Heimdall but never tried it. I will give it a try next time.
Hey guys, as the title suggests....im having trouble
Trying to update my ROM.
Active sync works fine, up to the point I have to run the RUU and .nbh files, it just drops out and then i get the error 266 coming up.....asking me to check the cable etc.
Tried different USB ports and leads with no joy.
Strange one this, as I have updated my ROM before (around a year ago) with no trouble.
Help very much appreciated.
marlon32, ActiveSync has nothing to do with flashing process,
Enter bootloader mode (switch off, press & hold Volume down, switch on), than connect to the USB cable.
The word Serial on tricolor screen will be changed for USB.
Now start RomUpdateUtility....

I have also tried this method, but the nothing happens.
When in bootloader mode and the USB cable connected, it is not able to recognise what Image is already on my phone. Even if i click next it fails again with the error 266 msg.
I thought I understood that active sync had to be established first?
Im following these instructions:
FIRST TIME FLASH
1. Remove SD (and remove Application Data and Program Files folders from it using SD card reader)
2. Remove HSPL with HSPL2_RUN.exe (flash SPL 1.66.0000 with HSPL2_RUN.exe)
3. PowerOff the phone
4. Boot to bootloader (VolDown+PowerOn) and when it shows "USB" flash stock ROM by running matching RUU_Leo_S_HTC_XXX_3.14.XXX_Radio_15.42.50.11U_2.15 .50.14_LEO_S_Ship.exe (get yours HERE or for Orange UK/FR HERE)
5. Hard Reset (when phone starts booting after step 4, remove the battery, insert it back press VolUp+VolDown and still holding both press PowerOn and follow the instructions)
6. Boot to homescreen.
7. Run SSPL_RUU.exe with Artemis v4X RUU_Signed_XXXX.nbh in the same folder - YOU HAVE TO BE ON HOME SCREEN, NOT BOOTLOADER (this took me 3 tries until succeded - yes - nerve wrecking, but works). If it doesn't work (hangs on black screen for more than 2min or stays at 0%) remove the battery and try again. If still doesn't work - try solutions in NOTE below.
8. Hard reset (instructions in step 5)
9. when on homescreen - softreset.
10. Insert SD

You're going about things in a strange manner, using hspl.exe to set a stock spl and then using sspl to flash the rom? Pretty non standard, what are you aiming for? My guess is you are using outdated instructions from before Hspl4 was released to handle spl/hspl 3.03 (just a guess, of course)
Stabdard flashing a 3.14 rom would go as follows,
Phone into bootloader(forget actuvesync)
Run Hspl4.exe, choose 3.03.hspl
Back into bootloader,
Run the Artemis flash using custom ruu .
Done.
It won't show the current installed image because that is a simple registry entry and is only accessible when winmo is running, but when winmo is running the USB times out when the ruu reboots into bootloader, sim that's why we manually enter bootloader.
(I haven't checked in the Artemis thread as to if there's a reason why his rom wouldn't follow standard proceedures, but I did use exactly your process prior to Hspl4 release)
Thanks for the reply.
What the issue seemed to be (after reading other threads) is that mu laptop is USB 3 and no HTC programme does not like it!
When i used an older laptop everything was fine flashing HSPL 3.03.
Out of interest is it true that USB 3 does not programme correctly?
