I received my SGS2 on Monday - pre-installed with the latest firmware (KE7) - and had problems immediately trying to get Microsoft Exchange ActiveSync configured.
I entered my configuration, consisting of
email address
Domain: user name
password
Exchange server
and a tick in the 2 SSL boxes
but kept getting error messages like:
Setup could not finish
Unable to connect Server
or
Setup could not finish
Activation failed. Unable to connect to network. Try again with network provider's default APN.
And before anyone asks, I did have a working data connection (automatically configured) and had no problems with internet access, email, weather updates on the widget, downloading apps from the store, etc, etc. I tried lots of different values for exchange, did a number of hard resets, etc - no joy. And then I brought the phone home, connected to my wifi and tried again. It worked!
I didn't believe it myself, so the next day I did the following:
Hard reset, wiped everything including cache.
Switched on phone, entered details for exchange - same error message as above
Drove home, outside the house, switched on wifi, entered my connection details and tried again (the details that previously failed were still on the screen, I reused them with no changes)
And it worked!
I would have thought that any application, including the Exchange configuration utility on my phone, would be agnostic as to how its data was delivered to our corporate exchange server; O2 GSM data or BT home broadband connection through a wireless router, who cares?
Anyway, this was driving me mad before I stumbled on this "solution" and hopefully the above can help someone. I'll also pass this info back to Samsung.
Before I go, does anyone want to comment on what the problem could be - O2 network blocking some type of traffic, hardcoded values deep in the configuration utility, etc, etc?
Hi,
Me too facing the same issue with my Samsung Ace S5830. I tried to configure my outlook with same module from other set it worked perfectly fine. I am facing issue with only my mobile set.
So I guess its not generic problem across all mobile set.
If any one is aware of this, please help ?
Regards,
Satish
FIXED !!!
I rang my network provider - o2 - and explained my problem. I was expecting to be told that if my data was working for other things then it wasn't their problem if there was an issue with my exchange client.
I was wrong! The guy I spoke to took me through the config in:
Settings - Wireless and network - Mobile networks - Access Point Names
Basically, we blew away the existing APN config and entered a new one from scratch. If I remember correctly, the new entries were the same as the old with the exception of Proxy and Port. These had values in the original APN I was using and they were left blank in the new one.
And it worked!
The o2 network - or more specifically the proxy - was not liking some of the data produced by the exchange client (which was SSL) and was refusing it.
So, lessons learned:
O2 support for me was great
If you have a similar problem, try ringing up your provider and ask them if the APN settings (which are usually automatically generated) are correct for your device.
I couldnt get the Exchange Server settings to work on my brand new i9100, I've installed Touchdown and it appears to have fixed the problem with the native exchange setup
Setup could not finish - fix
I have been looking for the fix for the problem;
Setup could not finish
Activation failed. Unable to connect to network. Try again with network provider's default APN
In the end the fix was simple in my case, I had the wrong date and time. Once I had corrected the date and time it setup perfectly.
Hope this helps
Unfortunately i got the same problem..

Yes.. I tried 2 days later...
It sounds funny, but it worked with any changes...! :S
I'm in exactly the same boat. Everything was fine on Friday and then I tried a new ROM (KI8 based Touche X-Power) and, all of a sudden, Exchange no longer works. No reflash, no wipe and reinstall. I've also tried official ROM's but it just point blank refuses to set up. Touchdown works, but in-built Exchange doesn't. This is very, very strange. Is there an explanation that anyone can give? I'm stumped...
activation failed
I have the same issues. Today I upgraded to gingerbread then to cognition 5.2 and now I cannot get exchange set up. I dont know if its due to the upgrade or a total coincidence. I get the "activation failed. unable to connect to network. try again with networks providers default APN" I'm using the same exact settings for domain, exchange server, etc. as before but it will not work.
same here. from lightining rom (2.3.4) to 2.3.5 roms. same issues with all the roms.
+1 To this problem. No idea what is causing it. Tried flashing to Villain ROM, had the issue. Flashed to Lightning ROM, same thing. Had to flash back to an older ROM because this problem was so annoying! Didn't work on either Wifi or 3G, with everything double and triple checked. Seems to work fine on my older ROM.
Same issue here. I've only been on stock with an At&t SG2. It was fine intially...I then wiped the phone for personal reasons and now I get this same error... try again with network provider's default apn. I tried with Touch Down and Enhanced Email and it works fine, but no luck with the native client. Very odd!! Btw, my device runs 2.3.4.
I hope someone is able to pinpoint the problem.
Same issue here.
Was on Cog. 1.51, exchange was working fine, flashed CM7 for a couple of days again no issues, now went back to 1.51 and getting the above messages. Wiped, cleared cache, etc, nothing works.
Same issue here. It was working fine when I originally configured it on Friday night. I wanted to change my google account on the device, so I did factory reset. Now I can't add my exchange accounts.
I contacted the Rogers (wireless provider) as well as Samsung Canada (useless weekend support staffs). Rogers points to Samsung. Samsung points to my company's MIS team!?!?!?!
Anyhow, I read the activation dialogue box again and again.
"By activating this application you accept that part of your movile phone data will be stored, processed and used by Samsung for the purpose of reporting activation of the application to the licensors of the application s/w itself. Such data held by Samsung will be dealt with strictly in accordance with Samsung's privacy policy. A copy of the policy is available upon request. Continue?"
It looks like it's trying to contact Samsung server to register the Exchange activation. I'm guessing they're trying to count number of exchange (activesync) users. Maybe, to pay greedy Microsoft.
I'm going to try again tomorrow.
glad to know there are many others, just flashed touch x rom, it actually worked, but the video playback was stuttering so i thought to flash it one more time,...and then cant activate exchange mail...tried flashing other roms didnt work, but a revert back to stock rom from nandroid backup works...getting confused here also
This has been driving me nuts for the last day and a half, funny that this topic's just exploded with replies. Sounds like it's a problem with Samsung's servers (Or their mail provider, Seven) activating the device for exchange. Vexingly, it worked absolutely fine until I switched ROMs and had to re-enter the settings, I've wiped all data multiple times and flashed many a ROM to try and fix it, but still no joy. Glad to hear I'm not alone, at least, sounds like we'll have to wait for Samsung to fix it.
In the meantime, people, don't remove your exchange setup.
EDIT: Emailed Samsung NZ about it, looking forward to their response.
i'm having this problem too.
I was on kh3 rom, all work perfectly.
Then (why? why? why?) i changed yesterday to the ki3.
No more exchange, i gone back to the kh3 but nothing changed, same problem.
On wifi, 3g, also using the wifi connection on the same network of the server exchange.
Any ideas? I need those email for work ç_ç
Me too.on cm7 works
Sent from my GT-I9100 using XDA App
Since we have to wait for Samsung (Or possibly Seven) to fix it, your best bet is to use another email client like K-9 (Free in the market) or one of the AOSP ones floating around. This is only an issue with the stock Samsung email application, so CM7 & MIUI et al will be fine.
You can try putting a tick in the 'set as premium account' box, which will sync email at push through the social hub - but that will only work if your exchange server supports POP or IMAP. That method will only sync email, not contacts and such, and it might not be the best idea for confidential work mail anyway. Still, beats not having any email access on the device..

Trying to set up my POP email acct that I have with Comcast. Everytime I try I keeps telling me that the server is not responding. Only having issues setting up the 2 Comcast emails, has never been a problem on any Sense 2.1 rom.
All my other email accts set up with no issues.
Anyone have any ideas?
Having a similar problem with setting up Yahoo on BAMF 2.1 Stripped
I had the same problem 3 times trying out the standard. I flashed back to remix and not one problem. I'm wondering though if it had anything to do with unchecking manual data set up while going through the phone set up. I didn't want to worry about reflashing standard just to try it and find out that didn't change anything and have to flash remix again.
The only reason I would consider going back to standard over remix is the notification having the black font on remix. I can't read anything on the drop menu. Other than that I prefer remix.
Ive tried unchecking the ssl and then rechecking it and it worked. also i found that hotmail is working through exchange

Appears to be a Verizon problem with Comcast, because my unrooted phone had issues connecting with Comcast mail in 4G. It connects fine in 3G or using the Xfinity email app (from the market) in 4G. I called Verizon, they sent me a new sim card and said if that didn't work, a full restore would be needed. I received the sim but didn't install it... but now my phone (with old sim) appears to get mail in 4G without a prob.
So i updated my phone to CheckRom and kernel to NEAK and then Syhia.
For some reason, some of my calls keep going straight to voice mail since then. I thought maybe it was an issue with some app, so i did a wipe install of Checkrom and installed the NEAK kernal. But still same issue.
I then changed the kernal to Syhia and still some calls go straight to voicemail.
Anyone have any clue why? Any suggestions? Would greatly appreciate the help.
I had a similar problem. go to menu, settings, call, and turn off call rejection.
Hopefully its a similar issue u are having.
Whatever the issue is it's not kernel or rom related. It's purely a network setting issue. And these vary from carrier to carrier. Call your carrier.
Thanks for the reply guys. Sorry took me this long to post back.
Well i wanted to stay on the custom rom, so i did try installing it again, and i thought that since it is a full wipe, it will fix the issues. I also did a wipe cache/dalvik chache manually.
Any hows getting no where, i resotred using my original backup and everything seems to be fine. No one has complained about it, so i am guessing its all well now.
I had restored it before mrwarlock43's suggestions, but i do remember making sure that the blacklist was empty. So i never turned call rejection off.
All running now i guess. Just going to wait until ICS or the next rom before i reflash again.
Cheers and thanks for the help guys.
Hi all,
I'm using a GSM Razr XT910 with the CyanogenMod 9 customised ROM by J.Y. Daddy (RAZR-CM9-12.05.17-UNOFFICIAL-GSM-J.Y.Daddy) and I keep receiving duplicate SMS messages. I've changed to "Original timestamp" in SMS settings to see what's going on, and it seems I'm getting the same message up to 9 times.
It happens with multiple contacts, and I'm not sure how to fix it. I'm in the UK on O2 - does anyone have any ideas for how to fix, or has anyone else experienced a similar issue?
I had this issue too.
I live in Australia and have been using J.Y.Daddy's CM9 builds pretty much since he started porting them over to GSM. I tried to narrow the issue down to a few factors and the main causes I suspected were:
1) Different kernel version to your phone's "natural" one. Have you used RSDLite to flash any different fastboot files? Or are you on rooted stock initially?
2) Handcent. I began using this app after making the switch from GOSMS a while back and shortly before the duplicate message problem began. They have actually confirmed that there is some compatibility issues with some Motorola handsets, and this is reflected by Handcent's changelog. Are you by any chance using Handcent?
3) Finally, the last cause I come up with was a network issue which is refusing to send an 'acknowledgement' packet to the provider, essentially meaning the message is never marked as received and therefore, it keeps sending the message in an attempt to correct this.
In my experience, the problem was #3. I was on Optus for a long time (The 'second place' Australian telco), and recently made the switch to Telstra (#1 telco) and the issue has been resolved. If you are on stock kernel and do not use Handcent, then unfortunately I think it may be a network issue.
Don't take my word on this though, I'm not an expert. Just speaking from experience.
Thanks Mr. Ektid, I think in my case it's probably #1. I installed a different 2.3.6 rom over RSD in order to get the Bluetooth working without causing a bootloop, so I guess that must have messed things up. I don't use or have installed any SMS apps other than stock, and I don't think it's a network issue as texts were working fine before installing ICS.
I've rolled back to Arctic for now, seems to have sorted things again. I suppose the way to fix the issue in CM9 would be to RSD a stock UK 2.3.6 rom and then flash CM9 over that - but I'm not sure if that would mean I would still get Bluetooth bootloops, as it seems like a fairly specific 2.3.6 rom is needed for that to work.
Ah well. Back to Gingerbread for a while.
Recently Installed CM9 agrabrens 7.1 fantastic btw! I turned do not disturb on last night and after disabling it I no longer recieve texts on my cell phone off data. It seems that Google voice has stopped forwarding my text messages.
I have tried flashing other roms wiping data and deactivating my google voice account and no luck. I am able to send messages via the stock app fine just not receive them.
Any idea what I should do to approach this?
Thanks
I have the same problem. I am glad I am not alone. I am thinking about reverting to complete stock and then seeking technical support. Why do you think it is a Google Voice issue? Did you flash VM Firmware?

I just flashed MeanRom and the issue went away. Unexpectedly reflashed cm9 agrabren again and still no messages....
It just started happening suddenly I know that my configurations are correct.
I may try a superwipe
When I flashed into MeanRom all my messages came flooding in thank god so I didn't lose them up in the cloud but i like cm9 i Don't wanna lose texting...
Did you flash Virgin Mobile Firmware?
My messaging has not been working for a month. During this period I have tried many ROMs. I am not sure if this is ROM related.
Yes but I stripped the boot loader out of it so I am on boot 1.4 and also flashed back to 2.17 but maybe I haven't done anything other than that. But why would it be fine then randomly stop working.
I haven't tried any others from mean ROM which worked and agrabrens. I also have a kernel of he who must not be named installed I tried without it as well and problem remained. Was running great until this morning.

Bump Issue still exists
Finally I was able to get messaging back using stock app. When I disabled Google Voice I started getting error Msg 2134 and solution to it is to unblock text on the phone through Sprint's website. Damn Sprint, even they didn't know about it.
My Sprint > My Preferences > Block Texts > unblock all. And you messaging should start in a few minutes.
If this doesn't work try disabling your Google Voice account and then try it again. You might have to try different browser or wait a little bit.
