i posted this in another thread, but its already on page 2 of that forum so id rather get my answer here.
Specs
-i have a vibrant for tmobile.
-rooted.
-phone has to be 2 months old, hardly used. still had stickers on camera.
my questions
-if i use the unroot technique posted earlier, will i have any problems with tmobile and unroot? show any signs?
-does any one have tmobile thats done an exchange under warranty with a rooted/unrooted vibrant??
-i have a dent on the chrome frame around the screen, nothing else...will this effect the warranty?
that dent pissed me off, ive been USING the phone for like 5 days? i havent been on this forum long.
so i wanna use a warranty exchange, say my mms or something is acting silly, and get a new one.
let me know.
Bizumppppp
Bizumppppppppppppppp
lack of response probably is due to having not a F'ing clue what you are asking.
whats wrong with your phone?
why can't you unroot it? Use OCLF in the market if you are having issues.
why would use of the phone (dent) hender warranty for a valid claim... assuming you have one?
If I unroot it, will tmobile accept it and not be voided???
Im asking because my dent is pissing me off and I wanna send it in to tomobile w a lame excuse that my mms is messed up
In one sentence, if I unroot my vibrant, will tmobile void my warranty?
So you dented your phone and are going to report a fake issue in order to get a phone without the dent you put there.
Okay....
Perhaps you should have a real issue so when they get your phone they dont charge you for the one they sent you.
PS, I am not going to help you fraud samsung/tmobile, maybe others will.
Buy a phone case. That should fix it.
If you are going to scam them, then nobody here can change your mind. Same goes for people who brick their phone, and do a warranty exchange. In the long run, it hurts everyone, causes prices to go up, and causes more stringent return policies.
If you go through with your scam, why don't you spend 16 bucks on a t-mobile silicon case for the replacement vibrant, so next time you don't dent your phone.
bye
ps... to answer your question, I think using ODIN with the 512 pit and tar should get you back to stock. Not sure though if they can tell you rooted before, ask someone else.
Would using odin put him back to stock, or would they still know he rooted before?
Unrooting your phone will keep your warranty intact, but that dent (depending how big it is) is not covered with warranty because its physical damage. When they receive your phone they inspect it and you can get charged an out of warranty fee which is near $250-300ish for a vibrant. T-Mobile will not let you dispute this charge either because all the phones are individually inspected.
Also, claiming an issue with the mms is not the best reason for a warranty exchange because mms issues are network related 9 times out of 10.

Im not trying to scam them.
Whatsoever wrong w having a new phone w a dent on it, and just trying to get it replaced???
When I had a blackberry. I told tmobile some issues I had w the phone and thhey had no problem sending me a refurbished phone.
Now, when I try and do the same w the vibrant, im wrong????
Come on now, if u guys dont take advantage of that luxaryy, ESPECIALLY a 500$$ piece of equipment, then ima say ur wrong
I paid good money to get a phone that gets dented in my pocket???
No thank you.
Not to be rude an all, but all I had to do was ignore or answer me.

I would say that returning a phone that works fine because of a dent is wasteful. Buy a case from amazon for a couple of bucks and it'll cover the dent just fine. And if dents and scratches are going to bother you that much then take better care of it.

Sounds like you dented it and want another. Ok Capt. Entitlement.
How about treating your things better or taking some responsibility when you don't. I'm well aware it's a $500 piece of equipment and I treat it as such.
When you're old enough to buy a car are you going to take it back to the dealer when you dent it? They'll laugh in your face.
lololol
MY car is older than YOU. lololol
guaranteed
yea, i ****ed up and dented it, cool..... u ****ed up and made her get an abortion, woopty-doo
i dont see whats wrong in what im doing???
i smell hate, and its strong....
if see advantages and opportunities, guess what??? ima take it and run like a crack head.
Root/unroot to exchange phone with tmobile
Just do it and see what happens. Let us know. I had a problem with a phone that the USB plugged in kept intermittently come on. Not good called TMobile has a new phone in three days. But i had a legitimation problem not a scratch or bump.. I don't think TMobile will exchange. Unroot phone then go in sd and delete update or anything that shows Young tried to put a rom on phone. Mer I'de get a cover.
i got my casemate case.
but the day i ordered it, is the day i dented it.
OF COURSE ima get pissed.
like i said, i did it like 5 times with a blackberry curve. not once did they hassle me.
so i dont see why it would be a problem with a phone thats less than a year old.

Drop it on a rocky driveway , and by "accident" back over it with your car/truck , but be sure to pull the car/truck forward and back , just to make sure you actually ran over something by "Accident" ...
haha that worked it got tore up. i slanted it up on the tire and it just snapped. thats dude.
This is mad lol, was there no way of getting it into the bootloader screen!?!
nope,, it wouldnt do ****. i just recieved my brand new hd2 in the mail today... pretty surprised the deductable was 130...
Personally I think pictures are in order!
umm, you could have just returned it, lots of people have, it wont power on, right? so they cant see bootloader, so tehy cant see hspl, so they wont complain. Now, however, its an insurance claim rather han a warranty replace, they'l probably want an excess,
Yea if you really broke it your not too bright. You could have made some cash off some sucker or selling it for parts. Also: Pics or it didn't happen.
i hope you get caught for insurance fraud
I hope you don't get caught for insurance fraud and enjoy your new HD2.... If Windows and HTC would of created this phone with the RIGHT software you wouldn't have to be risking bricking it in order to make it work right... SO BLAME THEM!!!

Hello,
Very short:
I have a weird problem that basically boils down to "Can a repair company known that at one stage my handset had custom firmware on it?
More detail:
The reason is that because of a hardware fault (miroc USB things its always plugged in) I sent my phone to get repaired within the 3 month guarantee period.
The company has since requested 85 Euro to fix it because they say that I voided my warranty by installing customer firmware on the handset.
But, before I sent them the phone I factory reset everything back to the way it was when I bought it.
How could they know that I used custom firmware?
How the hell in the first place could installing customer firmware and safely uninstalling custom firmware void a warranty.
All details
So while on holiday my handset stopped working correctly and started to think that it was always plugged into a power outlet. This occurred mid week into a holiday so I doubted OS problems.
Just to be sure, when I got back home I installed a handful of new and old OS’s and kernels to see if the problem would go away.
The issue did not go away, so I flashed back to my first backup and reinstalled a secure kernel. The phone was back to stock and the yellow triangle was gone.
Gave the phone to my T-mobile store and they sent it to the repair company to be fixed
The phone returned a week later stating that the issue was fixed and the latest firmware was installed on the handset. I turned the phone on and the exact same problem was still there.
Returned to the store, informed them, they sent it back to the repair company.
Another 2 weeks later and I get a letter stating that I need to pay 85 euro to fix the phone, no explanation
Go to the store, they look it up and state that since I used customer firmware I void the warranty and have to pay even though the issue is HW related and not SW.
So, can the company know that I used customer ROMs and do this?

Yes it Voids Warranty That's the way it is ...
Dude SEARCH...
Anyways,
Yes they know as your Download rom Number increases every time.
Simple Easy to use Solution
I hope you must have read somewhere about USB Jig .. Use that
It Clears the Costom Rom numbers and Then u can safely give it to repair
Yep. You didn't mention the bit where you use a jig to reset the flash counter in your blurb. So that's a dead giveaway.
Like it or not, it's well known that running non-stock firmware on your phone voids your warranty, and frankly, anyone who expects warranty service after they've run non-stock firmware is kidding themselves.
Obviously if you reflash stock firmware, do a factory reset/get rid of any apps that might hint you've rooted the phone & use a jig to reset the flash counter there's a fair chance you'll get warranty service.
But it's never a dead-set 10000% rolled gold certainty & you certainly shouldn't have an expectation of same.
Thanks for the replies.
I did try a few searche, but I must have had a bad string. It's not like looking up a model number.
The jig thing I totally forgot about. I remember reading it and it slipped my mind lol. All that effort to get it back to stock and I forgot the jig lol.
Thanks for the replies, enjoy your day!
I just put mine back to stock and they repaired it no questions asked. And I didn't use a jig.

I think all companies are different. Some will look for anyway possible to make a money.
I understand that you void your warranty when you install custom OS, but I still think it's dirty tactics. I bought it, I own it, I will do what I want with it. If the fault is a physical defect, I expect it repaired regardless of what happened to the software.
"Oh I see you changed the stereo in your car. Sorry the defect within the motor is now not under warranty."
That's a not unreasonable argument, but at the end of the day that's the warranty. They don't exactly go all out to hide that part of the warranty, it's clearly stated. At the end of the day, no amount of "wishing upon a star" will change it. If you had the financial means, you might be able to take it further, but it's a case of diminishing returns. If you did take it further and lost, you'd be buggered financially. Hardly worth it for the sake of €85.
And frankly, if the warranty was unreasonable from a legal POV, I'm sure someone/a consumer organisation somewhere would have had a crack at Samsung/other smartphone manufacturers by now.
I personally don't have a problem with it. If I do something with something I own where it's clearly stated doing same voids the warranty, that's my tough luck. Obviously I'll take all the proper steps to try and get warranty service (stock firmware, factory reset, jig), but I wouldn't be overly devastated/surprised if they knocked it back. I did a few weeks of research on here before I even bought my phone & knew what I was potentially getting myself into on the warranty front.

Yea, I understand. Please don't miss construed the tone. I'm not angry or *****ing, I just find it completely unreasonable and the line in the sand seems to keep moving.
I add it to the same category as those online companies changing there T&C's so that you cannot sue them if you agree and you cant take another step until you do agree. I add this to the same category as Apple/Sony suing and criminally charging people who rooted their products. Apple and Sony sold those products and what the buyer chooses to do is their business.
Let's stop pretending we are the owners of our products, we are just renting.
Wish i should find a clip, but I am reminded of this family guy ep:
Peter Griffin: Where's my VCR?
Redneck Kid 1: Dang it Buck. It's my turn to use the sex box.
Redneck Kid 2: It's my sex box, and her name is Sony.
Haha ;-) Yep it is like that (Saw that episode again on pay TV a couple of weeks ago).

I did a stupid, stupid mistake of pulling the USB out as Odin crashed whilst performing the pit file update. Now, my phone won't turn on at all. I mean, AT ALL.
I've done everything I could.
I've ordered a USB Jig from Amazon, which I'm hoping MIGHT do the trick. However, I know "mobiletechvideos" offer their JTAG repair service if the Jig doesn't work.
1. Are they reliable at all? All their reviews are 5stars, like 49 out of 49.
2. I have warranty on this phone, but I've rooted it. Will Samsung bother with my problem or will they not mind/care?
3. Shall I send it to Samsung or shall I send it to Mobile Tech Videos?
Thank you.
Jig might work (tho very unlikely; I'm being honest with you here. But still try it anyway). Cross everything it does.
1) They're members here (I recall seeing posts by the guy who runs it on here months ago), and I've seen one or two people on here who have used them successfully (tho I'm sure there's probably a lot more than that).
2) That's the luck of the draw. Nobody on here can answer that for you. In the 8 mths I've been coming here, for people who haven't been able to go back to stock/reset the flash counter & sent their phone into Samsung/an authorised repairer it seems to be about 50/50. That is, half seemed to have been denied warranty service (which is quite reasonable; messing with the phone does void your warranty) and half have got warranty service because whomever fixed it either didn't care or couldn't tell it had been messed with.
3) Should you send it to Samsung or have it JTAG'd ? Having it JTAG'd will almost certainly be cheaper than having it repaired by Samsung outside warranty. There is always a possibility that it can't be JTAG'd (we've seen people on here who have sent phones to be JTAG'd & for whatever reason it couldn't be done). What you could do is send it to Samsung (play dumb obviously; the less you say the better), and if they say they're not going to fix it under warranty (you've got no comeback on this btw, so don't bother arguing the point), ask them for a quote. If it's cheaper than the JTAG repair, get them to fix it. If it's not, have it JTAG'd.
Essentially, whether or not you get it done under warranty will probably be determined by how messed up the NAND is after you pulled the plug. So yeah, send it in & pray ;-)

Thank you for that response. Very helpful! According to a currency converter, I'll be looking towards £40 to have it JTAG'd and for them to send it back.
However, I'm not too sure how much it'll cost for me to send it. The SII box isn't that heavy lol.
No probs ;-)
If you look at what they (MobileTech) charge you for return international shipping (this is obviously on top of the cost of the repair; read this carefully), that should give you a bit of a guide as to what it will cost you to post the phone to the US from the UK. So yeah, with the exchange rate nicely in your favour I think you'll find them repairing it will be much cheaper than Samsung repairing it outside warranty.
Good luck, and post your experience back on here when you're done. Will be good for other people in the same situation to have a recent reference/someone who has been in the same situation.

I dont think the Jig will work , unless you have a gingerbread OS .. deffo wont work on ICS ive tried it ,, you should have the option to boot the phone in two ways ,, which im sure if you look at the tech side on this site you should get all the help you need ,..,, i dont know how true it actually is but ive been told its near on impossible to hard brick a SGS2 phone .. but do have a good look around to find the solution.
can you charge your phone? i believe i had in the past not been able to boot my phone no matter what i did... until i plugged it in so that the "charging" icon showed up and then I could connect it to my computer usb
Near impossible to hard brick an SGS2 is it ? Then how do you explain the half a dozen or so (on an average week; sometimes more) hard bricks we see here in Q&A ? It can & does happen. It is far from impossible.
The OP knows his options, the jig was suggested as a last resort which is pretty standard on here regardless of anything else. On (very) rare occasions it has been known to get a phone that otherwise can't be made to get into download/recovery modes or boot into download mode. It was made clear to & acknowledged by the OP this was unlikely to work.
The OP has a handle on the situation (this thread was done & sorted a week ago). He understands the phone is only going to be fixed by JTAG. The issue was whether he got Samsung to do it or a 3rd party repairer.
The one thing that has me curious tho; why quote my post ?

So, first of all, sorry for not replying or anything, I actually hadn't signed on XDA ever since I had my phone bricked.
Good news, I got my SII back today from T-Mobile, fully repaired!
I ordered the Jig, didn't work. So..
I bought the phone off a friend, who had got it on a contract from T-Mobile, so he did me the favour in ringing T-Mobile and inquiring whether the phone was eligible by their repair service, which it was. The phone was sent around the 6-9th of July, (free post, they sent a carrier parcel bag all for free) and it come back today.
So, if anyone manages to hard-brick their phone, you know my method works
I hard bricked my S2 as well (sad times) but all I did was ring my service provider and they fixed it for me. They said the hardware was faulty and fixed it for free!

the bottom 2 mm of my sprint evo 3d is not working right. by that, i mean that its sorta uncalibrated. my phone is rooted and it was normal until yesterday. now, if i put my finger on the bottom to mms of the screen then it claims it to be higher that it is.
for example, the dev options gives me a screen pointer overlay option and if i have my phone on the very bottom possible it says its at 888.5 on the Y. my finger trace is followed but higher.
thats a really bad explanation so ill try using a picture from paint

any questions (i know i did i bad job of explaining it, but its hard to explain.. for me atleast) just ask..

haha thanks
my photoshop trial ended a month ago so im making due on paint for this
but i think im just gunna take it in to sprint... i already flashed an ruu and unrooted and got s-on... on the bright-side hopefully ill get a new phone!
same thing happened to my phone. took it to a sprint repair store they told me to come bak in 2 hrs i did and they replaced my phone with a refurb. unfortunatly my refurb is also borked and will restart whenever i connect to wifi. anyways best of luck to u =)
uh oh. i hope i dont get one of those... i never turn wifi off! :O
i plan on re-rooting or rooting whatever phone i get, so hope its not messed up and is in good condition...
you think theyll give me a refurbed white one if i ask?
They originally told me that they didn't have any refurbs at the store and would have to order one but theymagically found one...
I called sprint and complained and they helped me out with a loop hole to get a new phone a year ahead of time and I got the s3. I wasn't dealing with any more crap phones from them even tho they say they r HTC certified

Hi, uh I started another thread on making sure things got backed up. Which I did properly and everything was good. So today I haven't done anythign and was waiting for the new slim rom to make it's debute hopefully this week sometime as that is the one that appeals to me the most. Anyways, today my phone just got super hot, far hotter than before and it decided to die on me...I think. it shut off and I haven't been able to turn it on. Could this be a side effect of installing twrp/unlocking the bootloader/rooting? Or would it be a defective unit? One concern I had was getting a defective unit so i waited out my 30 days before even considering doing all this. So yea my 30 days from att is up. Would there possibly be a way to get a new phone from att or does anyone have any tricks on getting it back online? I personally think it was an overheating issue, but my phone is now cooled down.
So i went to the att store and of course they won't do anything. They told me to call some number they gave me. If I return it will they know it was boot unlocked and rooted? I can't turn it on at all. Using a power source or connecting to my computer nor my car charger...

Ok, so, im not sure if by return you mean, return for an exchange or simply a return as ATT will probably only send you a reman unit for yours and not allow an actual return. If you havent called them yet, i would recommend it. I have dealt with them many times in the past and one thing that has always shocked me is that they never have asked me about, or even commented on, how rooting or unlocking prevents them from exchanging it. Even during the disclaimer, they have never once said that if the device has been modified they wont allow the exchange.
I say all of this because should they not mention anything like that, and you send it back, im fairly sure you can claim you didnt know and werent told, and they will take care of it. Also, i say this because i personally sent back 3 bricked GS2s and an lg nitro as defective and got my reman units and every single one of them were rooted and such. So, i would feel safe. As long as they dont ask, and you dont lie to them, then there shouldnt be an issue. I wouldnt lie to them, i just dont mention it. AGAIN DO NOT lie to them or attempt to decieve them, i would never encourage that, but if its something they dont ask about, then, it, in my opinion, is not something that they are too concerned with.

Okay, thanks for the response. Sorry I was in a bit of a panic when I wrote that. But I have called ATT and they didn't ask me or mention in any disclaimer that if it's rooted or unlocked it won't qualify. I didn't mention it and so that does make me feel a lot better. Hasn't been physically damaged or come in contact with water so i'm pretty sure I'm safe. Thanks again.

They may or may not check when you return the phone. I returned my S3 a few months ago in exchange for a different phone but I forgot to unroot it and uninstall Superuser. The representative at AT&T didn't even turn the phone on. I didn't have anything to hide though, if they told me I couldn't return it because it was rooted then I would have sold it and purchased something else. I think the manufacturer is the one to worry about with these things. LG would definitely know if it were unlocked and they would be able to determine if rooting and unlocking the phone caused the problems you described.

Well if they can turn it on I will gladly take it back due to them not accepting. I couldn't turn it on by anymeans, even plugging it in there is no lights to signifying it is receiving power. But i heard this phone had overheating issues in the first wave (or two) so it's probably for the best to get a new one. They are currently mailing me a new one and so I should receive it next week sometime hopefully.

Sounds like everything worked out.
im in the same boat as you... completely dead phone. But I did open it to see of the battery pull would work. Do you think that theyll check and refuse my warranty because I opened it? the phone on the outside is NEW. Btw do you have a contract/account with ATT? I bought mine off ebay and used it on tmo...
I have the exact same problem! Totally dead phone that the charging light won't even turn on for. Unfortunately there is a small crack in the bottom left of the phone that was caused months prior so ATT wont give me a new one...
send it for repairs! I had rooted and unlocked mine so ATT didnt cover my warranty, but I only paid 50 bucks for the repairs and now I have my phone back!
