[Q] Oh ****, charger port. - HD2 Windows Mobile 6.5 Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Got a question.
I think I've damaged the USB port on my HTC HD2 by jamming the cord in too hard. It's pushed the port a bit up inside the phone and now if I don't put it in correctly and firmly, the phone won't charge or it'll cause a short circuit. This phone is less then a month old and was purchased on a plan through JB Hifi (Electronic store) so it's still under warranty.
Can I take it in and claim warranty or what? I don't got mobile insurance but either it's repaired or it won't be good for much longer. I'd prefer to be able to claim it under warranty but unsure.
Will Telstra (My network provider) accept it or? And should I flash it back to the original stock bloatware full ROM before attempting it?

from a person who has just had his phone returned unrepaired because damage to he usb port was out of warranty, it cost £280 for a new PCB.
I will be disassembling my phone to re-solder my micro usb port back onto the PCB, assuming i have not pulled up any pads!

its not covered by the standard htc warranty, but there's a reasonable chance if you go back to the seller and say its been getting progressively worse for a few weeks and just now started shorting they may just swap it out to keep you sweet.

USB port pyhsically dead... =(

One of the wires on in the usb port bent back into the connector and upon trying to get it bent back it snapped out.
I guess it's time to use that insurance.
Is there a way to solder a new connector on. Most likely not myself but having some with some skillls do it?

you could ghetto rig that pin on to the usb connector cable, i don't know if it could be done, but it might work. I recently f'd up my port, but i bent my pin back in position, now it is still flakey. it think you may actually be covered under manufacturer warranty.
if u have verizon insurance they will send you a new one super fast
...
Yup. Called Asurion and they're sending me a new phone. Best customer service experience ever.
She said they were sending me a new phone and house charger, I asked if I could get a car charger instead, they're sending both. =)
Really hate to use the insurance for such a dumb problem, but the phone will never charge again, and I'm not arguing with verizon that a ROM cannot physically break my phone unless I've got some lawnmower man stuff going on. In which case we all need to be really nice to DCD.

I swear Asurion has the BEST customer service. When I had my XV6700, replaced it about 5 times (gave me a brand new box each time), but finally on the last time I asked them for a different phone because I was sick of it. They offered to give me a Palm treo something or the xv6800. guess which I chose?

USB Port on the phone is starting to break?

The USB port on my phone seems like its starting to break. The black thing inside the port seemed to be off of the wire things and tilted at an angle.. i inserted the usb cord into the port and pushed it back into place but i got a feeling it will be breaking off soon....
Is this covered by the warranty?
also, just to note... i bought the phone on craigs list a while ago... not sure if that affects anything ;o
I believe that would be on warranty but don't tell the VZW guys you bought it on craigslist Just say you just bought the phone and the port seems loose some times and see if they will give you a new one. Worth a shot either way.

Rezound Warranty question/Back to original

I have recently been having issues charging my phone, I have to wiggle it in order for the phone to charge and its very annoying. I fear the problem will get so bad in the future that the phone won't charge at all. Also when I connect it to my PC I have to carefully maneuver the cable in a certain way so my PC can detect it show the SD and ExtSD in MY PC.
Should I take it back and get it replaced or have others here had the same issue here and what would you recommend?
I currently have a unlocked bootloader (Hboot is JB) and and S-off.
If I do want to take it back. Can I? and where do I even begin to start getting everything back to stock?
Please help I am willing to donate to anyone that can help me with step by step directions to getting this completed.

take a look at this thread it has some good info on that
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1612937
Yikes so S-off -->S-On and then back to S-off and that will lock the bootloader again then S-On again
You guys think Verizon will replace it for that reason or it's not even worth to go back to stock everything?
Return it
Try to contact VZN tech support and tell your story.
They're the best bet to secure a replacement Rezound.
If they say Yes, and are sending you a new one, then
do that recipe above and return to 100% stock, Locked.
That way, your time is paid back by insuring no surprise charge
after the return for unlocking or s-0ffing old one.

Thanks wish me luck.
I just had to do the same today for myself. It took me less than an hour to install a fresh RUU, S-On and then S-Off again to get my boot loader back to Locked. Remember they will not say anything for the unit being S-Off but they can refuse warranty replacement for the phone being Unlocked.
Is it the cable that is bad, or the usb connection? If the usb connection is bad then I would definitely contact verizon about a replacement, just tell them your phone won't charge or connect to the pc and you've tried multiple cables.
I send my phones back all the time for loose USB connections like yours.
I'm in my 3 rezound and wife is on 2nd. I have sent them all in unlocked, soff , rooted, running a Rom.
If you TELL the rep on the phone that you did all that they MIGHT not send u a replacement. But why tell them, just talk about the charging problem , tell them u have used multiple cables and chargers, tell them your friend has a rezound and you used his cable and charger that work fine on his phone but won't work with yours.
You will have a replacement tomorrow
All this business about putting everything back to stock is nonsense.
Vzw released a statement saying that they only look for 3 things when accepting a returned unit.
1. Is the shipping package damaged?
2. Does the phone have physical damage. (broken screen, cracked case ..etc. )
3. Does the phone power on?
That's it.. that's all.. nothing else. It is up to the person on the phone to verifiy everything else. If they authorize a replacement, and your phone passes the 3 physical inspections a above, your fine.
Nobody at the warehouse is powering on your phone and looking for root and other garbage.. that's just silly, and Vzw has said as much.
Good luck.

It's the little port on the side of the phone that either lost proper contact with some of the leads inside the board and that's why I have to wiggle it up and down or just a hardware failure not sure how this happen but calling Verizon today and I am going to say it doesn't charge.

Great success, now just need to get it back to stock just to be safe. Thanks everyone.

Bad usb cord
I go through USB cables very fast. I have had 4 cords wear out on me. I get them form monoprice.com and they are inexpensive. The allow for movement at the connection.
However, if you are using the stock USB cable then this may cause damage to your phone as it has a tighter fit and movement at the connection is less likely as is more likely to transfer any movement into the plug mount in the phone. The plug is not the same as a standard usb plug which has a looser fit and always for movement stress to occur at the connection instead of inside your phone.
After verifying that a new cord will not work and getting your replacement, I recommend not using the stock USB cord on a regular basis. I only use it for connecting to my PC for Modding the phone, where I want a 100% secure connection. I use the standard USB cable for sync'ing to my PC and all other non PC related connections.
From monoprice, I bought a 15ft cord to use with my HDMI Converter. Works great.

micro USB port replacement

Alright, so not too long ago i tripped on my USB cord while my phone was charging and it took out the little plastic piece inside the micro usb port that holds all the wires in place. I bent them back into place, and can still charge my phone, but sometimes it hard resets when being plugged in/ getting unplugged.
I took it to the sprint store, they said physical damage and I would have to submit a claim with a 150 deductable. Well, i know a micro usb port doesnt cost 150 so i orderd "HTC micro USB" jacks off of ebay with the intent of replacing it myself. unfortunately the ones i got were not the same; wrong size and shape, etc...
my question is, does anyone know where i can get the right usb jack, is it even available or do i have to bite the bullet and pay the 150? or maybe someone has an idea i havent thought of yet?
Just bite the bullet and pay the $150. You know it will be done right (you get a replacement phone) and it will still be under warranty. You damage it replacing it yourself, you might not be able to file a claim later.
Have you already looked at this website?

I would not recommend attempting to replace the USB jack unless you are skilled with a soldering iron. The surface mount components are not for the faint of heart. If you don't know what you are doing, you risk damaging the phone evern more.

[Q] Busted USB port - worth fixing?

My USB port hasn't worked for a few months. It was intermittent at first, but by now it's just dead. I bought a battery charger and a second battery, and just swapped them every night. Works well enough, but it's a PITA.
I've had my i9100g for just shy of 2 years, so it's supposed to still be under warranty (here in Germany, anyway). I sent it to the repair facility but they're giving me grief about running CyanogenMod. Note that the phone won't even charge from fully off -- it's *clearly* a hardware issue, but I don't know if I'll be able to talk them into fixing it. Otherwise, they want over a hundred euro to fix the phone (they insist on a full motherboard replacement), which IMHO is barely worth that new at this point.
If I can't get it fixed under warranty, should I try to get the local repair shop to replace just the USB port, or should I try to replace the whole motherboard myself? (I'm comfortable with disassembling fiddly electronics, but I can't do tiny surface-mount soldering.) Have any of you done either of these things?
Yes.I can change usb port/board in 5 minutes.Look at the you tube video that is posted in my motherboard thread. Also read 2 threads by duguet and keithharris about usb replacement.
You dont need to take out mb, just take out the mb screw closest to usb board to get room to pull out usb boards cable. The cable under the mb is stuck down with tape.
And you shouldnt need a new mb, someone is talking crap.
Thanks for the quick response. I didn't realize there was a separate daughterboard for the port; that should make things much easier! I think the service center said they'd have to replace the motherboard because that's the "approved solution" for running custom firmware -- what a bunch of assholes, seriously.
I think my plan will be:
* Try to get warranty replacement for the daughterboard
* If not, see what they charge to replace just that daughterboard for me (I already owe them 15 EUR for a "diagnostic" fee, which is waived if they do work, so it's a sunk cost)
* If that's too much, try to replace the board myself
ETA: I'm kind of embarrassed that I missed all the old posts about this apparently very common problem -- maybe I just didn't know what to search for, but it looks like this has happened to *at least* dozens of other users :-/
Or you could save yourself all that grief & just replace the USB board/port regardless. Will cost you a tenner, tops. As TheUnderling said, Keith's thread in General (search for 'replacing usb charger board' or similar as it isn't stickied) has all the info you need to get it done. It really is quick/easy to do yourself.

I'm getting the phone shipped back, FYI.
Anyway, it sounded like a lot of people had issues with getting not *quite* the right board, which tanked their signal / reception quality. If I can clean the plug and everything works, I see no reason to open the thing (other than just to have a look round, which is always fun ).
