Just hope Toshiba will make this another fiasco.

Already posted in the Folio thread...

Toshiba is very new to Android!
But i agree that their support for software issues on Folio is equal to null!

Buyer beware, try before buy.
Sure, just like the Folio it might have great hardware (except screen) but I
would not trust.
Every 10" Android has ****ty screen and bad software. They may be able to replace the screen, add $200 to the price and place Honeycomb on it but will
that mean its bugfree ??

We are talking about a new OS on new hardware, most sure that it will have serious bugs. The problem is not the bugs, because most of software have bugs and android is no exception, the problem is that Toshiba is not interested as far as we know to correct it, if they were interested Folio will be working fine by now.
But software development is not only about correcting errors but also about improvement. I don't see any of it from Toshiba until now.

screw the new folio! i'd love to see THIS INSANE GUI ported to our folio

This guys are using a one (with a tegra 2 inside) to powerup a deskop enviroment! This is brilliant!
This sure demonstrate that Folio as enough power to have decent software running in it! To sad that Toshiba doesn't understand this!
And isn't Honeycomb is Froyo!

Man, think about the possibilities if we have honeycomb and some software like this.
Than we would be possible to use our folio as desktop by using the dock and connecting to a tv or pc screen

I think this new folio looks great. Only hope the device building material won't be as cheap as our folio...
Does this new tablet got a name ?

More rumors here

Who would thrust Toshiba again?

I won't. They don't support their products. Hardware wise they are okay, but what's the purpose of having a tablet if it doesn't work well with the shipped software. We are still waitting for official flash support. Thank God we have FolioMod!
Many manufactures are suffering from this same problems, good hardware but aweful software.
Sure is pretty, but will it be usable?

what is its cpu?

Are there possibly any other tablets that compare to the Gtab?

Of course I'm speaking with the processor and what.
Basically I have this idea of buying a lower priced tablet from China and then root it. Now I'm not just look for a 10", a 8" would be even perfect but I'm just saying
Do you guys think this would go over? Only problem is I'd have to find a tablet that has decent amount support and work on it.
Lend me your thoughts as I've thought about this today while fooling with the GTab at Sears.

At the moment, anything that's cheaper than the GTab is not comparable in terms of hardware specs. The Notion Ink Adam is the one exception, but availability is a significant issue, as is (potentially) build quality.
The general consensus on most of the sub $250 tablets from China, from almost every review site, is "You shouldn't buy this tablet at any price point."
The main issues you need to look for are a) capacitive touch screen rather than resistive, b) reasonable battery life, and c) any hint that someone has brought the OS up to a more current version. Many of the Chinese tablets a) ship with a resistive touch screen, b) have battery life on the order of 3 hours, and c) are still running 2.1, with absolutely no modding community - not to mention they're all running much slower processors in general.
All of that being said, there are about 2 million tablets that are going to be released in the next couple of months that will feature similar hardware, and I'm sure some of them will be at the GTab price point, or possibly below. If you're unsure, my advice would be to be patient.
Thank you for the thoughtful reply. I figure I'd rather go with a name brand I'm familar with and that has a big support group for modding.
I'm torn between this and NookColor but the success rate of root and rate of not failing is on the side of NC compared to the GTab.
Also I hear Spring will be a time for a bunch of new tabs to drop, besides the Xoom what are others?

Rooting is easy on the nook color and gtablet but installing custom roms...the gtablet is way easier. IMO, the roms available for the nook color are not as stable as the ones available for the gtablet. The nook color is still a work in progress when it comes to loading a stable 2.2.
I have both devices and I'm stuck on 2.1 on the nook because the 2.2 roms seem to be hit and miss. With the gtablet, I'm waiting on a stable 2.3 rom but I'm not in a rush because I'm happy with the rom I have now on the gtablet.
The G-Tablet is a pretty unique product right now, but as others have said above that will all change very soon. Tegra 2 tablets will really hit the matket hard this year, so if you have any reservations I'd say wait and see what is available in the next 6 months.

When I say failing I mean after root, the problems you run into regarding FC's, certain apps not working or opening at all. Certain coding failures I see riddled in the Dev forum. Of course Im still looking but it just seem a lot of people had problems with certain things not working or getting unsual errors.
I know you run into this will any root but it just seems a bit more than I'm use to.
EDIT: XMR has given a bit more substance to my arguement since he owns both. I do see a lot of people having problems with the newest Dec. rom on the Nook.

[Q] Android on HP Touchpad

This is probably a dumb question in the wrong section but are there any reasons outside of something like a locked boot-loader that Android couldn't be compiled to run on the HP touchpad tablet?
I was just wondering the same thing. The CPU is a SnapDragon so the hardware at least has the potential to work...
I would imagine that it would be quite difficult because you would need to build your own kernel and custom version of android.

Im not a Developer or anything but I would Assume that we Can wait for a Honeycomb Tablet to come out with Similar specs (I.E Same Processor and Ram) and port a Version of that to the TouchPad. It should work if Running HC 3.2 since it supports different Screen sizes too. I would assume only minor tweaking would be needed. But thats just me Guessing.
Sorry but I was thinking the opposite. I would kill to get WebOS running on my new Moto Photon!

I think this is going to become a much more important question, now that HP is getting out of the consumer hardware business and WebOS is going to become unsupported very soon. I think a dual-core snapdragon would be more that enough to run 2.3, and the aspect ratio (4:3) makes it a lot more attractive to me than the existing 16:10 stable of Honeycomb tablets.
If the source code for Ice Cream Sandwich is released to the public, hopefully this can happen. For now though I hope someone will be interested enough to pick up a cut-rate Touchpad (prices are likely to plummet now that Retailers will be dying to offload them) and attempt to get CM7 on it.

due to LTE:
Samsung Galaxy S II Hercules
Samsung SHV-E120S Galaxy S II LTE
use the modem-less AP8060 that the touchpad uses. they would be the target candidates to port to touchpad. could maybe do boot ->boot like IOS jailbreak where you strap webos to boot android.
Since AP8060 is SOC (all in one) - good chance of this working.
I would put up some cash to see this happen... really would... WebOS is nice.. the Hardware is nice.. but AS IT IS... is as it will be and it just doesnt have enough in it for me to enjoy it. Not enough quality apps.. and what happens when things need updates to make them work properly. call whom ever you want ... no one is there to pick up the phone they have all be WFR by hp lol
I really hope someone can get Android on those Touchpads. The big box retailers are dumping them right now. 16GB for $99.99 and 32GB for $149.99.
i know its not related but since its being sold for 99$im thinking of buying it the only question is that does it run divx movies without converting
id donate $20 towards this
The 16gb in Canada is going for $99....well worth it if a port was possible or in the near future!!!
http://www.engadget.com/2011/08/19/let-the-liquidation-begin-hps-16gb-touchpad-on-sale-for-99/
It was possible with the HD2, with a little effort, Android will become possible!
someone please port android to this device!
What is the over-under on this getting Android? Is it worth a poor man's money?

[Q] General questions about Toshiba Tablets

I am just coming off 2+ weeks of frustration with the Transformer Prime. I was lucky enough to get mine from Amazon so I returned for a full refund. Despite all the frustration, I realized that an android tablet is a handy gadget that I really would like to own. I am beginning the process of researching for my next purchase and now that I have dealt with Asus, I have a better idea of what I need to figure out before I make a purchase. I am looking into Acer and toshiba.
Can anyone who's owned an Toshiba tablet answer the following:
I have read Toshiba is coming out with the Excite. Anyone have any thoughts on it?
Do Toshiba products typically have good quality? Do they last?
How is Toshiba's RMA process? Do they require you to pay for shipping if the problem is due to manufacturer defect?
Is Toshiba customer service easy to work with?
How frequent does Toshiba provide firmware updates?

If these are important things for you, then you better do not buy a Toshiba tablet.
well, the construction quality is good, the talbet is very robust. Toshiba support is okay, but forget about firmware updates, our folio is officially still on froyo, thanks to the developers here we get ics 4.0
I cannot say I don't like my Toshiba, but I will never buy a Toshiba tablet again...

Was also into the Prime but due to the many issues I gave the Toshiba Excite a try. It's my third day now with the "Excite" and so far I couldn't be any more happy with the overall performance.
GPS works like a charm with turn by turn navigation software. WiFi no problem, build quality feels great, lightweight and nice magnesium back plate.
Only worries so far is forum support (none yet?) and the lack of info and accessories from Toshiba homepage.

I do have to agree with this user. I'm lucky I got my Toshiba Folio for €100 (plus shipping and accessoires). It is pretty neat (especially after installing ICS pre-alpha) but mine still has issues such as on stock rom locking up frequently and not waking up from sleep.
If I were to buy a new tablet, I'd be looking at higher quality brands. The issues are relatively minor but they still distract me from the overall experience. But the main thing I got it for, it is doing well: Reading study books for university and internet
Folio vs Iconia
I have a Folio tablet from August 2011.
I think the quality of Folio is good but the software is the weak point.
The ROM from xda is the only reason because the tablet is usable.

Not totally right, the Folio 100 is perfectly useable on foliostock 2.2.5.0131 even if its not Honeycomb or ICS... i got mine fore roughly 100€ tho it was a winwin on hardware side( how many tegra2 tab in 2010?) It can still compet with late 2011 early 2012 tab...
Ok the "lockdown" of this by Toshiba is a bit lame but thanks to the dev of cm and dexter.
What is a shame its seeing "discontinued" on custom roms thread T F 100 deserve more love!

[Q] Help to buy my 1st tablet

Hi folks
I just decided to buy my brand new 1st tablet and i need some help here.... i cant decide about those two
Transformer Pad 300 x Toshiba Excite AT305 (as long im noob i cant post the link to the gsmarena comparing both... sorry =\)
im very impressed with both... but we always will have pros and cons
toshiba at305
pro
- has more ports available than asus
- better stereo speaker built-in (SRS sound enhancement)
- better proc and better GPU
- reads sd/microsd
cons
asus has a better UI ( will we have the Chameleon UI available soon???)
Asus transformer 300
pro
- LTE support
- 16GB ROM
- a better camera but NO FLASH as long toshiba has
- sns integration
- sms, mms available
- better display
cons
- again.. no flash camera (i never know when i will need this flash camera)
i'm totally NOT interested in dock stations or anything like that... i already have a nice dell xps i7 with me wherever i'm.. im looking for a nice tablet to read something on my free time or watch some video lessons easier while im on the bus or somewhere else....
Asus is at least 60 dollars cheaper than toshiba... but.. as long i already saved the money to buy the toshiba... there is no diff to me to spend this money or not.... =\
and my doubts are:
1. can i install any ics on my tablet or only the the ics for that tablet? like... if i want to install the stock rom or any other else, like samsung tab or other ones.. it will brick my tablet?
2. anyone has one of these tablets? if yes, mind to say something about them?
3. is there any custom rom for toshiba? i couldn't find any...
4. and custom rom for asus?
Thanks for help folks!!! =)
Based on the comparison: http://www.gsmarena.com/compare.php3?idPhone1=4692&idPhone2=4596, the Toshiba Excite AT305 is a better choice. No, you cannot install any ICS on your tab; it has to be made specifically for it. You can keep check here for any roms which may come for the Transformer: http://forum.xda-developers.com/forumdisplay.php?f=1582, but none for the Excite yet. You may also want to consider something other than your choices (if you want the tab for modding and flashing roms) which has more development and similar specs e.g. The Eee Pad Transformer Prime: http://forum.xda-developers.com/forumdisplay.php?f=1414.

cons
1. no ics til July
2. the charger is the same port of usb, so, if i use something ((like a external hard drive)) i need to check if the battery is good enough...
3. no full sd port

2. if i buy motorola in my country i have warranty, toshiba not

Apart from the panel everything else is different, so no it's not. Actually the cpu/gpu part is like twice as fast than "AllWinner 31" but whatever..
Having said that it would be trully a shame if it's not to be supported by xda. It's by far the best archos tablet and (by far) the best tablet under $300.
It's one of the few android tablets I would be happy to shell out money for, the part that it is not being supported by XDA is what makes me rethink it...
edit: A oh, ok; thought this thread was about Archos *Titanium* HD ... my bad, carry on ... Still it would be a wonderful idea if any or all of those hi-res cheap tablets were to be supported by xda

What difference does it make if it's a 'Platinum' or a 'Titanium'?
Facts are, there were/are VERY FEW devices Archos has ever sold that worked right! And the very few that ever did they screwed up with bad firmware!
Believe it or not, there actually ARE devices that work as good (in some case actually even better) than ANYTHING from Archos.
The reason there is so little support here on xda-developers is simply because ALL Archos devices are set up in a NON-standard way compared to all of the other major manufactures of Android devices. Archos COULD be making some world leading Android devices, but they really do not want to simply because if they ever did that they could not sucker people into buying the NEXT WORTHLESS ARCHOS DEVICE. Archos is actually WORSE than most of the cell phone companies here in the U.S. in that regard.

I know how badly the software sucks which is why i don't buy those tablets, so much more the reason to have custom firmware to fix it. If anything custom firmware matters a lot less in devices like nexus that are already close to impeccable. It's companies like archos that needs the most to be supported by xda *because* their software sucks yet the hardware is decent and it all goes to waste...
AFAIK Archos is the only droid manufacturer that has produced decent 4:3 tablets (which dimension I find ideal for tablet usage) and as it stands it all goes to waste, because of archos bad software *and* xda's zero support to it :-\ , it's a shame trully...
It has an octo-SGX 544...I don't see how anyone who's interested in tablets could possibly pass this thing up. I wish it was possible to install Chrome OS, Ubuntu, or Windows RT on the Platinum because the GPU would be great for those things.
