There have been a couple post like this and the general consensus is its a lot cheaper and easier to have the insurance handle it.

I could swear I have seen a post - including pictures - of the entire dissassembly process; of course, I can't remember where, but it is probably worth your time to do a little Googling.
A few months ago, "for parts" Eris phones with intact screens on eBay were selling for north of $60-70; I suspect that price is due to the fact that a new replacement touch-screen assembly will cost a bit more than that.
So, the prior poster's remarks make sense if you have phone insurance, since the costs involved are comparable - especially if you consider that there is a chance you will spend the money on self-repair.. and not succeed at it.
If you thought you were going to spend $70 and a bunch of your time to end up with a used phone, maybe you could sell it ("for parts") on eBay, and then you would have $140 to spend on a different used phone... with the same out-of-pocket expense.

Digitizers are currently going for 40-50 bucks with tools, insurance is 80 bux. Just weighing my options, im confident I can change digitizer screen. As of now, all still works... :|crosses fingers|:

I tried doing the repair on my old Eris and ended up screwing up and bricking my phone. I have an extra digitizer that I never even was able to use. I ended up getting an Eris off someone who got an upgrade. It was my only option since I didn't have insurance on the phone.
Not hard at all. Look it up on youtube. Watch video till you're comfortable, go slow and be gentle. Get the right screwdriver. Torx set.

Try at your own risk
If you don't have insurance, you can pick the digitizer up for $40 or so (I think I got the first one for around $30.) I actually got the last one on Amazon, there are several there now.
YouTube videos help a lot even at helping you see the parts and knowing what comes next. We paused the video as we went so we could match up parts and it helped when putting it back together again. Go slow and keep track of pieces parts (like any other repair work you have likely done.)
One thing that was an after the fact duh - was that any dust you get under the new screen is very visible. You will keep trying to clean off your screen. Then you have to take it apart again to get it really clean.
If you don't think you can do it and if you don't have insurance, there are places that repair phones. Talk to your Verizon store, they might know of one. The one around my house wanted $100 to replace the digitizer.
Good luck!
The whole process is pretty easy, but the only problem I ran into was that the parts that had adhesive on them were OVERLY sticky. Like it was next to impossible to pry off some of the parts that needed to be replaced. There's an attachment to the back of the LCD screen that I worked on for 45 minutes and just when I was about to get it a small ribbon got cut by the prying tool rendering the phone completely useless.

Ok so I like never drop my phone, I'm really good about keeping it nice and clean, but I don't have a case. So the other day at a school pep rally I dropped it and it got stepped on and all and I'm so upset that it got all scratched up, maybe one or two little cracks and its really bothering me
so anyway, does anyone know anyway to get a hold of a new screen online or somewhere to replace it or something cuz I couldnt find it?
Short answer...can't find them for sale. And when they are made available they will likely cost $200 or more.
Long answer.....
A big part of my business is repairing smartphones. And unfortunately Samsungs are the most expensive screen on the market.
It's a trade off of sorts. Any samsung screen is a factory oem part, thus the cost.
Where as iPhone, that had Samsung making many of their screens, has much cheaper screens available because third party companies, Hong Kong / China, make lower quality parts for much less.
So while it's nice having a true factory replacement for the phone, something that is incredibly hard to get for the iPhone (call up foxconn), it's much more expensive, as in $150-$200, iPhone being around $35.
And for some messed up reason Samsung screens have been getting extremely hard to find.
The two bigger smartphone part places online: repairsuniverse.com and globalrepairparts.com (requires business license to purchase from) don't have a screen for the I777, and out of stock for the infuse.
I've been having a tough time finding one for the infuse ($150ish). Most places that had them are out of stock (ebay has had some posted the past couple days but I've never bought from those sellers, hopefully they turn out reliable). And it's been that way for a few weeks. Even the websites you've never heard of, don't have them in stock. Tried buying from one that listed it as in stock, next day they refunded the money. Their reason - not in stock and not sure when it will be.
I don't know what's going on with Samsung screens being so hard to find, but I hope it ends.
And as far as replacing, super easy. One of the easiest phones to work on. Most Samsungs have the same in general layout. Watch a video on YouTube for replacing the Captivate's screen and you'll see what I mean.
If you do replace it, and your old screen still displays a picture, sell it. You'll probably be able to get $100 for it, even with the cracks.

ok thanks alot man, cuz i probably would drop 150 for it if I can get the chance for it, but I'd kinda wanna wait until I can start to see it come out in bigger numbers just for reliability's sake
If you ever do see it, or better, a few of them, on one of those sites it'd be great if you'd post that back here, thanks.
Will do. I've been checking every week.

As the title says. My cousin dropped my beloved Prime on the kitchen titles because she hadn't docked it properly. The tablet dropped out of the dock, but the keyboard is fine.
It has two massive dents in the top corners, because that's how it landed: on one corner (the top-right corner) and then 'bounced' onto the top-left.
How do I get this repaired? I really hate my expensive electrical products from being damaged, so I need it repaired ASAP - I ideally need it for college next week, but I know it won't be back by then.
Do I simply phone up ASUS UK and ask them how much it would cost to repair it, then send it away and give them however much they want? Or is there a different procedure?
Thanks guys,
Phil
Best of luck with that, but as all of the main electronics are assembled on the case back, you are talking about an almost total disassembly and reassembly plus a new back. That will be hideously expensive. Based on what camera companies charge for similar work, I would expect between £100 and £200.

That's why I've started this thread - I want to see if I can get it any cheaper.
ouch... Hopefully you have insurance on it? If so, then it won't be so bad hopefully, but if not it will be really expensive, likely more than it is worth. Does the tablet still work? If so, you might want to think of selling it for 200 or 300 if your lucky, and just buying a new tablet. I guess it just depends on the cost, but whatever it may be it won't be pretty. Sorry, best of luck to ya.

When it's customer induced damage, you have to pay for the shipping cost, the parts, and the hourly wage for the guys who preform the repair. This would probably require a complete dissassembly, and I bet 2-300€ wouldn't be overdoing it. Sadly...
Your probably better off selling it off at a loss and buying a new one if the dents bother you.
*EDIT: This^^^^
Wow, you guys are estimating pretty low there.
Considering they want $400 just to replace the screen on a $499 tablet, surely actually disassembling it and replacing the backplate would come out being more expensive than just buying a new tablet.
Really you're just SOL. I don't think it will be any time soon that your average repair shop (if at all) will be able to get the parts and do it at a reasonable price.
Either sell it at a discount to someone who doesn't care as much as you do or just toss it aside as entertainment for people/kids; use the same amount of money you would fixing it just getting a new one.
Hey guys
I got this phone in August last year. I have bad luck with phones so I want to repair this one instead of getting new one. In the last 2.5 years, this is my 4th phone and I don't like upgrading phone all the time.
Earlier in January, I dropped my phone. Screen worked fine and everything but had a crack. I send for repair. The guy gives it to someone else without my permission to repair it. They repair it and since day 1 the top of screen is unresponsive. I turn screen off and on and then it works. The repair guy won't speak to me any more.
Now it has become permanent. It doesn't bother me as much but I hate it when random keys are being pressed. I think it's because of the pressure built on top?
I then again broke the screen accidently. So now I want to do it myself then get a defective screen and lose more money.
This is my first time changing the screen. To change the screen, do I follow same tutorial as outlined in the the sticky or is there something else? Also I'm confused as to what needs to changed. I don't know if they took something out of my phone and replaced it with something cheap. So do I simply replace the top layer of screen or the LCD? If the LCD, how would 3D work?
Also eBay is filled with screen replacement. If someone can give a link to a cheap deal that will fix my phone, it'd be great! Also the repair guy wrecked the housing of my phone. Is it replaceable?
Last but not least, should I sell the phone once fixed or I can continue to enjoy it? As in, will it break down again later down the road?
Go on amazon.com and buy a digitizer and follow the instructions guide to replace it. I'm not sure if you can buy a new housing or not. Replacing the digitizer should fix your issue. Also, be very careful that you do not tear any ribbons when replacing the digitizer. If you tear one, your phone will be no good.
Also, you could always just warranty it a sprint store. 9 out of 10 times they don't look for the sticker that tells if the phone has been opened or not.

If you're in canada, look on your local Kijiji site. I've fixed HUNDREDS of iPhone and Android devices simply by advertising on Kijiji.
Look there, find someone who does iPhones and email him. He'll have the tools and expertise to properly repair your phone.
There is a screen replacement guide stickied in this very forum.

Sorry didn't tell about the phone.
It's from Rogers.
There is a sticker over the screw and when the tool is inserted, it voids it (the sticker goes in).
The guy won't reply to email and I really don't want to deal with another tech. So many just take any mobile when they have no clue and look up google to fix it! They won't even spend enough time to ensure it's ok because they have others to fix. I don't want to explain what happened between me and the tech guy as someone will post another "cool story bro" pic. Wasn't expecting that on this forums...
Anyway I doubt I can order from Amazon and having wasted so much money, I'd really appreciate if someone can link me to eBay for screen and digitizer (assuming it fixes the top of unresponsive screen)
So where did you sent it off for repair in the first place? IMO, you paid for a service, and if that service wasn't completed correctly, you send it back and they do whatever they have to do to make it right.
Don't you have insurance? I'm confused right now.
If you can't help the OP then don't post, simple as that.

I found someone on craigslist who said they will do it
They said it'd be done tomorrow. Takes them 1 week for parts to arrive.
Parts arrive, they go under renovation
2 weeks after, they open it up and say they don't have tools to finish it
1 week later I get it and it's repaired by someone else
Tell them problem, they say ask them since they repaired
The third party says its firmware problem and can't speak English well and ignore me
Few weeks forward
Take iPhone for jailbreak
Pick it up, it doesn't work properly
Bring it back, they refund exact same money on spot
They say it was already a problem and they didn't do anything wrong and can put old firmware back again
They say take it to Apple, they know more
Apple says the phone is finished
I DONT want to spend countless hours going back and forth. I just want to do things my way. The amount of time spent, if I just went to work instead, I'd have gotten a new phone instead.

That was a warning after deleting 5 unnecessary posts.
if i root my phone, the screen issue isn't permanent, is it?
And this is the second time i root, after having permanent screen issue with HTC hero. So I'm a little worried. If it's safe to root without damaging screen, which root would be best? I just want to get rid of some Rogers programs as they're causing my battery drainage very fast. It's like 2% a minute! Also will a reset fix battery issues?
I am going to underclock my CPU to make battery life long.
Took Evo 4G in for repair a while back, the USB port wasn't charging right, but it would if you propped it up the right way. Anyhow sprint gives it back, won't charge at all, then they tell me I cracked the motherboard and I'll have to pay. My word against theirs, I ended up having to shell out 50.

Why are you bumping? There really isn't much you can do, you should have sought a reputable repair shop, not just some guy on craigslist. If the guy isn't going to honor his work, you are pretty much out of luck.
Hello everyone,
I hate this to be my first post. I've tried to research what to do but with a combination of case by base variables and being new to the Smart Phone world I could really use some advice.
Here is the picture of the damage done. I'm with ATT and don't have phone insurance. I'm struggling with multiple facets of life and this happening to my first smart phone within a month makes a grown man want to cry.
Here is the picture of the damage done: postimage[dot]org/image/bu0b0rsyz/
Please excuse me cheating on posting a link Admins, I only have the best of Intentions.
The major hit was at the return button. From what I've gathered, the screen is actually adhesively one with the LCD. I briefly talked with a phone repair company who said it would be over 200 dollars.
I looked on ebay and found a lens/screen replacement for $20.00 - ebay[DOT]com/itm/Replacement-NEW-Glass-lens-screen-For-Samsung-Galaxy-Note-i717-Black-TOOLS-/170922060617?pt=LH_DefaultDomain_0&hash=item27cbbfab49
Please tell me that this will suffice?
I was using a full sleeve case which needs upgrading as well. I've heard Otterbox recommended several times which I'm thinking about ordering.
Help is much appreciated, and I hope to eventually return the favor to this community once I start to catch up in knowledge.
Thanks,
Kenny

Hopefully one of the elder sages will post and point you in the right direction.. no matter the case, stuff can still happen.. hell, I busted the screen on an iPhone with an Otterbox.. granted the screen hit the corner of a table so that's not a run of the mill issue..
But definitely invest in a decent case, especially if you don't have insurance on your device..
And if you do decide to replace the screen yourself, read, read, read, read and then watch a few videos on how to do it proper.. no need for a risk of making the situation even worse..

The $200 -- LCD, digitizer, and front glass -- are replaced as a unit. Its many screws and parts, but there is a good youtube video for this procedure.
So there's no 30 dollar repair as I've seen mentioned before? It's still functional, will it get worse as I use it? Is there anything I can do to keep it from getting worse?
Please tell me an underwhelming, nondramatic few foot drop mistake isn't going to cost what I essentially make in 2 weeks, doing stressful and labor intensive work. =\
Thanks for the replies.
Three feet is a long way to fall for a $600 piece of some of the most advanced handheld electronics ever made. Pay the $200 and let a professional fix it before you make a bad problem worse and end up with 5 pieces of what used to be a smart phone.

Looks like I'm the first to post about this in the HOX+ section
Had the phone face down after having recently rejected a call, my dad and I heard a tiny sound but didn't think much of it. Later when I picked it up I was in utter shock to find the screen had cracked. The phone is only 1 month or so old and HAS NEVER EVER been dropped.
I gave AT&T a call knowing I'd get no where...and yes, I got no where. So I called HTC and they were super nice. However, they pretty much told me that while screen defects are possible, it's next to never that it's ruled as such by the technician. I sent it in anyway to see what happens.
I really don't have any other options at the moment to getting it repaired as I could not find a single place that sells HOX+ parts. Some have reported HOX parts being cross compatible, but I'm not going to take the phone apart (and risk damaging it) on a "maybe".
In sum, I'm heartbroken and pissed.
And to rub salt into the wound, I'm having to use my wife's old iPhone 3GS in the meantime :crying:
always sad to hear about the death of a beloved phone :crying: Good luck and please keep us informed.
I'm more sorry to hear that u have to use a sorry a** iPhone for the time being

I'd cry if I had to use an iPhone. Sorry to hear about your phone. I think the one x and + both share the same dimensions so maybe a one x screen will work but the leds will be white not 100% about compatibility so maybe check with HTC

I would hope that a technician could tell the difference between a defect and impact damage. If it were dropped, there would be some kind of impact mark somwhere, especially considering how hard Gorilla Glass 2 is supposed to be to break. Fingers crossed for you.
Don't feel bad. I just sent mine back to HTC as well. All layers of the screen destroyed but surprisingly the phone still worked so I'm looking at a new digitizer and lcd. I miss her

Thanks guys. Still ticked to no end, and the iPhone 3GS certainly doesn't help. Should have never sold all my ex-Android phones (urgh).
Still no word from HTC. I'm basically torn between forking over $200+ for the repairs if they're not going to repair it under warranty and just selling it as is on eBay. I figure I can get $300, then use the money toward a Nexus 4. It's going to kill me not having LTE, 64GB storage, sharp screen, nor the sexiness that is the HOX+, but I can't spend $200 after just recently spending $250 to buy it. I don't know. Confused

HTC/Futuretel in Canada quoted me $430 for screen + digitizer. I smashed it a few weeks ago, you can find my thread in the q&a section.
I found a company in Vancouver that will do it for $135 so we'll see how that repair goes.

My status changed to "In Repair" today. Not sure if that means they're going ahead and repairing it under warranty or that they're looking at and will contact me soon with estimate. Wait and see I guess. Keeping my fingers crossed.
It does not mean that. Mine said the same thing the first day and it was explained to me that it means they are taking it apart to diagnosis the extent of condition. My final cost was 200. They claimed they needed to replace the casing as well... I didn't argue it and paid up. You can dispute the charges though.

You're absolutely right. An hour later they sent me a quote with the same thing, $200 for the screen and casing. I called them up and asked as to why the casing needed replacing when only the screen was cracked. They escalated it and someone is going to contact me back. I don't have a problem paying to replace the screen (which I hoped to be around $120), but why should I pay an extra $80 for a casing that was in pristine condition.

Just got off the phone with HTC again. They said the 200 does not include the case. That is being thrown in because they probably damaged it when removing the internals. 200 only includes replacing the screen.

After reading your post I just said fuuuuuuuunk it and just went online and approved the repairs and paid for them. I have zero hope that any good is gonna come out of this and I don't want to wait another week (was told up to 10 days) for them to review my case only to come back and tell me they won't cover them. Thought about putting the $200 toward a Nexus 4 (or whatever I got from the selling the HOX+ as is), but I really love my HOX+, even if I miss the Nexus experience.

I totally agree with you. My case was pristine as well. Hard to tell from the pics though but there was no damage done to it. I'm guessing the destroyed it taking the screen out.

Am sorry to hear about your screen. Don't wanna go off topic but stick to the HOX+. I have the nexus 4 as well and it's a good phone and all but the camera and audio experience is awful. If you use your phone with a headset from time to time or take pics the Nexus 4 is ridiculous, I mean really bad.
Thanks for reassuring me I made the right decision then. Good to know about the camera and audio quality.

Got my phone back yesterday from HTC and was surprised to find out that they actually sent me a brand new one instead of repairing my original one. This actually makes me feel a whole lot better about dropping $200.
I'll give :good: for HTC for their quick turnaround and the nice packaging the phone came in.
All in all, I'm just glad to have my [new] HOX+ back.
