Bit of a wide open question maybe? But I'm sick of waiting for HTC to release the 2.1 update and want to move to a 2.1 ROM on my unbranded UK Hero.
I'm not bothered whether it's got sense or not I just want a fully working fast ROM.
What do people recommend.
Thanks
Sense - VillainRom 5.2 (5.3 should be out tomorrow)
Non Sense - ( I don't really use them so not sure)
Sense - VillainRom 5.2 (honestly ... In my personal opinion, there is a lack of competition)
non Sense - I've tried a bunch, but I just can't get into using a crippled phone.
I've been using Sense Hero 2.1 by Stickman
The font that is used in the pictures on Htcdevscene.info has reverted back to the normal font as people were'nt Happy !!!!
Everthing is working fine at the moment and another update is due out to fix some issues.
Can anyone compare this to the Villian ROM as I havn't tried that one.
Thanks
I tried almost all 2.1 roms on XDA, and even if developers made an awesome work on it, 2.1 is not worth it yet on Hero.
Roms are pretty stable, but not 100%, it's really slow compared to 1.5, and the battery drain remain huge.
Last thing, if you use Spotify, I think you can forget about 2.1 roms for now.....
MCR 3.2 is still the best
Well you say that but VillainRom 5.2 certainly is not slower than 1.5 roms

Do you guys feel that when using 2.1 roms, the phone starts out so fast and stable when you just flashed them then a couple of nights later, its so laggy and some things start to make problems like making phone calls or wifi stops working or acouple or the lag becomes more and more
my favorite 2.1? aHero 0.8: clean, stable and I don't have to complain about "issues"
Vanillain 2.0 JIT - AOSP maybe is better, I have to test it (Vanillain 1 was awsome)
One advantage about Vanilla ROMs: you can, if you want, use JIT

I have noticed that running the free app "autokiller" (which just tweaks androids internal settings) keeps it speedy at all times.

I also tried that, even with 2 or 3 applications running the phone remain laggy. Back to MCR after 1 month and a half on 2.1 (VillainRom and aHero), my hero is smooth again and I can use Spotify without having to kill all processes before.
And that doesn't prevent anyway from the battery drain
Was using Legend port but as was going for Holiday, downgraded to 1.5 for GPS. Now I'm itching to try but ROM development seems to be in explosion . Gone few threads for almost a week now and still cannot find any definitive answers:
a) Which build has the stable GPS without that on/reboot-off/reboot bug?
b) without sleep bug?
c) Bluetooth audio call working without any problem?
d) Without Camera green-blue tint
e) 95% stable? well close to 100% will be bonus
f) Can hold charge for at least of 7-10 hrs.
Thanks.
I'm using Legendary v1.3.5 right now and it looks good. Waiting for VillainRom 5.3 tho.. ;-)

With all due respect to the developers who I think do the best work out there for Android phones...I've tried a few of the new ROM's and I've not experienced the full working Camera claimed in several of the threads. I'm fine with the no zoom feature...I downloaded Vignette and it's all good.
It's the camcorder that I need working 100% with a new baby on the way. I am on BB 46 and I found that I had the audio delay issue with video recording. I applied the patch that came out for that issue and then I had issues with the video's freezing, particularly longer ones.
Does anyone run a 2.2 ROM and not have video camera issues in 720p? If so, what ROM/BB combo are you on?? After switching back to 2.1 last night I'm really missing the performance of the 2.2 OS and am dying already to get back to it
I'm not sure about the camcoder but I think Wolf's CM rom is quite good as he's constantly trying to fix the lag issues.
The stock camera/camcoder app can take things at a better quality, but the zooming is way too slow for me.
If you like the stock app, then you can wait for the GB update as some testers claim that they are going to use the SE camera app in our update.
I've made a couple movies myself in 720p and didn't notice any issues with it.
I'm on Wolfbreak's CM6 rom.

So no audio lag, no video freezing?
What baseband are you running? Are you on the stock kernel or a custom one? Did you just apply his latest ROM or any extra camera fixes?
thanks

BB shouldn't make a difference in the camera but you should flash to .52 if you really are on .46 and not .49. I have no noticable delay with WolfBreaks ROM with the hotfix on BB .58 but I haven't done any extensive testing either but in the videos I have made since he released the .061 hotfix I haven't noticed the lag.

Yeah I'm leaning that way, but the 2.2 performance overall is so tempting
I saw a lot of posts from you in the 2.1 camera mod thread. Would you recommend I stay clear of that and stay 2.1 stock, or patch the V10 camera upgrade? You showed some pretty impressive pics in that thread after applying the patch and playing with some settings.

Yeah, the thing is is if your running firmware .435 V10 wony work so well. Theres video/audio lag when playing back your recording. But when i switched to firmware .6 V10 worked awesome.
So if your running .435 use V8 as V9 and 10 were built over the .16 firmware. V8 was built over the .435 firmware.
Or you can just stick to stock which works really well itself. EV control is the major benefit.
I explained how to use it in the camera mod thread.
Sent from my X10a using XDA App
What I would do is this: Setup whatever 2.2 ROM you decide has least lag issues/best camera options then create a backup. Then flash a 2.1 ROM custom or not the camera is the same but only install apps you absolutely need and make a backup. Now you can switch back to your 2.2 backup and if you need a better camera restore your other backup and since you haven't installed a bunch of stuff it should load quickly. You could also set up the reboot to recovery script (doomlord has a thread on dev forum) and create a shortcut to it which would act like a widget to further speed up your restore process.
You should also upgrade your baseband because .46 is just old, .49 and .52 are the same generation and work with the same ROMs. Generally speaking the newer the BB the better the radio and battery and .58 is the newest now, although MiUi and GB ROMs work on older generation.

This I'll definitely consider. A dual boot situation at this point is more work than I'd likely use. Now that i've been back on 2.1 for a few days(keep in mind it's an optimized stripped 2.1 rom)....life's not so bad. I don't apparently watch much flash content on the phone because i'm not missing that. Really the coolest thing I miss is having the ability to toggle my wifi/apn etc from the status bar.

As much as I love reading through threads on XDA, I just dont have much time reading every Dev thread here. I will be getting an Atrix in the coming days to replace my Dell Streak. The reason why I cannot read through all the thread is because Ive been on and off with like 4 different droids and just cant waste so much time reading through all the threads, Ive already burnt all the time I had to waste.
So If anyone could just give the name of the ROM which they think is the most stable at this moment, I would be very greatful. As I need a stable ROM to fall back on when I try all the new ones coming out.
Thanks in advance!

Atrix allows you to dock the phone to a lapdock which transform it into something like a netbook.
the lapdock has a 11.6" screen, keyboard, 2 USB ports and doubles as an extended battery.

It's working great for me. I mean, I have little requirements. Facebook, Twitter, Browser, XDA app, camera (not video), wifi, 3g.. they're all working great for me. It's stable for my needs. You can give it a try. If you don't like it, you can always use Neutrino
Just remember that not all apps would work. Chrome, for example, is forever crashing on the Atrix due to the lag of hardware acceleration.

I flashed CM7 to my Atrix 4G earlier this week and it is stable. I spent many hours reconfiguring and testing after the change to ensure the phone will be stable for work. I think it will be and do not plan to make any more major changes until the end of the year unless something catastrophic happens.
The phone has not crashed and boots 5x faster than stock (30s - 35s from button down). Bluetooth connects within one or two seconds compared to 5s - 10s before. Wifi performance has remained unchanged, sometime up to 30s to fix but I have only tried on my old, home router. GPS lock is 10s - 15s indoors, maybe a slight performance increase. Camera loads quick. No hesitation when typing (after the last upgrade I was seeing a lot of that).

No, Neutrino is CM7 based and webtop does not exist on any such roms (or any ICS roms).
Furthermore , the old Webtop is likely to become permanently dead. We will have to figure out how to use the tablet mode based webtop in the future.

"Best" is subjective. The most popular Blur-based ROM still seems to be NottachTrix; unfortunately, the latest version (1.3.1) is also the last version, as Nottach no longer supports it (he no longer owns an Atrix). There are a few other Blur-based ROMs that seem to still be in active development, but I haven't really been following them (I use CM7.2).
Hi,
I find the posted threads confusing. I'm looking to flash ICS on my dad's Atrix 4G as he needs it for an app he considers crucial . Unlike me, he isn't very interested in experimenting with any exciting ROMs; he needs his phone to function: on and off, sleep, text, call, bluetooth, browser, camera, maybe music, without issue.
Fingerprint reader is not critical.
Is there a ROM that is quite stable in all these areas? Posts seem to say yes, but they also seem to say that stable ICS/JB is not possible because of kernel issues.
What's the bottom line?? Please advise me.
Stable ICS? No such thing. Been said countless times already. I don't see what is so confusing about that. Despite enthusiastic feedback from people, no ICS/JB is actually stable enough for day-to-day usage. That's why pretty much all of them get quite frequent updates.
Does the app in question not work on GB?

It doesn't, no. Unless there's a way to have ICS runtime environment or st but that sounds impossible
And the confusion stems from claims like "..stable enough for a daily rom!" in comments I keep finding in specific ICS ROM threads. I'm sure that's the enthusiasm you're talking about lol.
I've been using epinter's jb 4.1.2 for months. video cam & fingerprint not working. everything else, including photo-cam, works. and let me tell my experience and you decide:
in normal use, the battery can last 2 days. and seldomly, kernel seems to wake the device, causing battery drain. problem ends after a reboot.
I call it a stable enough daily rom. but it'll be your decision.

As the dev team threads have said, the ICS/JB kernel alpha release is immenint. It may be an alpha, but it may give you the results you're looking for if combo'd with an ICS or higher ROM. Current ROMs are stable to a point without the dev'd kernel. While i recommend waiting for a beta to be released, you're more than welcome to test out the alpha once its released while keeping the usual advisory warnings in mind. If you don't want to wait for the alpha, feel free to try one of the ICS ROMs, but be warned, camera issues and battery life issues are major areas to watch out for. These issues may be fixed by the dev'd kernel.
Personally i've been using Atrics v2.0 and epinter's CM 10.1. Both are good.

The video cam, fingerprint, & force-wake are literally the only issues? Or just the most frequent ones? Bc that'd be awesome but if e.g. the phone part sometimes wont open or the text messaging force closes or similar issues exist then it may be a dealbreaker for him.

Same question re epinters; additionally, re the kernel - would that simply reduce the problems associated with the ICS/JB roms or introduce its own set of issues?

I don't have any experience with Epinter's CM10, but from what i just read, comparing it to 10.1, it has the same issues. I haven't had any issues with messaging via ROM messaging app or via Go SMS. The kernel is supposed to solve the problems. However, battery life seems to still be an issue from what I've been reading. They disabled the camera for testing on the battery issue at the moment. At the moment, CM9, 10, and 10.1 all are running on variations of the GB kernel. While it was tweaked enough to make each ROM stable, the full potential won't be reached until the new kernel is implemented
The CM ROMs, in my opinion, are stable enough for daily use. Its up to you which ROM you want to use. As far as the kernel goes, I'll be trying out the alpha once its released, but it would be wiser to wait on the beta.

I have enough experience to say that these are literally the only issues i've had.
sms or phone or connection has never force-closed for me.
you might give it a try. it doesnt take so long to try and revert back.

This is true, just remember to make a nandroid backup (webtop optional) prior to testing out any non stock ROM.
With my setup, i've got backups of 2.3.6's 141 and 145, 4.0.4, and 4.2.1, and if i'm doing a straight restore from one to another, roughly 20-30 mins until i'm back up and running.

Sorry Dev's, I'm sure this should have been in another forum but I know there are others like me that only ready this one as it relates to custom ROMs...
Ok it's been a while since anything stable has been released or updated. Just wondering what ROMs the others here are running on their Photon. Me I've subsided to the official CM7 but am constantly tempted to flash CM9 and 10 just out of boredom and the unyielding need to flash something that "feels" new. Am I alone here?
I'm on pacman rom from december . its quite stable but less video recording.. i am still use mopho for daily use.

I use AOKP from 12/7. It's the most stable rom I've used but has a few issues for me. SwiftKey force closes when I use the Flow feature. Also the newest maps was force closing so I went to the previous version. Camera works most of the time but obviously video recording doesn't.
To your comment about wanting something to flash, I couldn't agree more. I miss when there were multiple roms to flash each week. I've sort of come to accept the situation we're in and despite the issues, joker and th3bill did a great job keeping our phone going. Most of what I need works sufficiently in th3bill's jellybean builds. I'm pretty content at this point, although I do miss flashing for sure.

I've figured out I can live with and without a few items.
- screen glitches don't bother me
- I don't care about hdmi output, bluetooth, docking or the car thingy
- Video Cam Illusion works good enough for me
- I don't really care about overclocking
- dont watch a lot of movies, youtube or games so HD video not so important
- the thing with Google Maps not rendering was the killer that kept me back on CM7
Maps will occasionally go blank on this rom, forcing me to end the process and restart it. That happens maybe once in 30 times of using it. There are also very few screen glitches. Sometimes scrolling in browsers will slightly glitch but it's not that bad.
I might go back and try out all of Th3bill's roms from December just to make sure I'm using the best one. I'm even tempted to try to find the old aokp ics build I used to use. That was pretty stable but screen rotation would crash the browser if I remember correctly.

My signature states what I use but I think its time for a factory wipe. I have too many apps & games, over 200, installed and am having lots of lagging. And yes I actually use many of them over a course of a month and like to test many apps out and remove them if they are not useful. Overall I think its the best ROM due to its "Stock" with some CM7 features and many other fixes! Runs very smooth as long as you don't install a lot of apps and remove them too like me. I know not too convincing what I use and why but I've tried a lot and kept coming back to Hybrid.
I am rooted, locked bootloader running peetr_ hybrid CM7 rom...stabld and nice!

It's been a long while friends..I do miss flashing...but I've been on AOKP since probably for as long as I can remember 10-11-12..yeah I get the FC's on Map and G+, but totally agree that Joker, Bill, and the other devs did such an awesome job. Waiting for Nexus 5...
I've been using th3bills last CM10 build since December '12. I've tried a couple different roms this year but usually within a day or two I find some quirk that the CM10 rom didn't have and decided to restore its backup. As long as 4.2 roms don't support 3d accel and Miui roms don't support Google Play Services, I see no reason to switch, especially when I can upgrade in 2 months.
Also for everyone running the same rom for the last year, I'm not sure if it's changes in the app itself or the fact that I set all composting be done by cpu in build.prop, but Google Chrome has been working fine for me for the last month.
