What ROM are you running on your Photon? - Motorola Photon 4G

Sorry Dev's, I'm sure this should have been in another forum but I know there are others like me that only ready this one as it relates to custom ROMs...
Ok it's been a while since anything stable has been released or updated. Just wondering what ROMs the others here are running on their Photon. Me I've subsided to the official CM7 but am constantly tempted to flash CM9 and 10 just out of boredom and the unyielding need to flash something that "feels" new. Am I alone here?

I'm on pacman rom from december . its quite stable but less video recording.. i am still use mopho for daily use.

I use AOKP from 12/7. It's the most stable rom I've used but has a few issues for me. SwiftKey force closes when I use the Flow feature. Also the newest maps was force closing so I went to the previous version. Camera works most of the time but obviously video recording doesn't.
To your comment about wanting something to flash, I couldn't agree more. I miss when there were multiple roms to flash each week. I've sort of come to accept the situation we're in and despite the issues, joker and th3bill did a great job keeping our phone going. Most of what I need works sufficiently in th3bill's jellybean builds. I'm pretty content at this point, although I do miss flashing for sure.

I've figured out I can live with and without a few items.
- screen glitches don't bother me
- I don't care about hdmi output, bluetooth, docking or the car thingy
- Video Cam Illusion works good enough for me
- I don't really care about overclocking
- dont watch a lot of movies, youtube or games so HD video not so important
- the thing with Google Maps not rendering was the killer that kept me back on CM7

Maps will occasionally go blank on this rom, forcing me to end the process and restart it. That happens maybe once in 30 times of using it. There are also very few screen glitches. Sometimes scrolling in browsers will slightly glitch but it's not that bad.
I might go back and try out all of Th3bill's roms from December just to make sure I'm using the best one. I'm even tempted to try to find the old aokp ics build I used to use. That was pretty stable but screen rotation would crash the browser if I remember correctly.

My signature states what I use but I think its time for a factory wipe. I have too many apps & games, over 200, installed and am having lots of lagging. And yes I actually use many of them over a course of a month and like to test many apps out and remove them if they are not useful. Overall I think its the best ROM due to its "Stock" with some CM7 features and many other fixes! Runs very smooth as long as you don't install a lot of apps and remove them too like me. I know not too convincing what I use and why but I've tried a lot and kept coming back to Hybrid.

I am rooted, locked bootloader running peetr_ hybrid CM7 rom...stabld and nice!

It's been a long while friends..I do miss flashing...but I've been on AOKP since probably for as long as I can remember 10-11-12..yeah I get the FC's on Map and G+, but totally agree that Joker, Bill, and the other devs did such an awesome job. Waiting for Nexus 5...

I've been using th3bills last CM10 build since December '12. I've tried a couple different roms this year but usually within a day or two I find some quirk that the CM10 rom didn't have and decided to restore its backup. As long as 4.2 roms don't support 3d accel and Miui roms don't support Google Play Services, I see no reason to switch, especially when I can upgrade in 2 months.
Also for everyone running the same rom for the last year, I'm not sure if it's changes in the app itself or the fact that I set all composting be done by cpu in build.prop, but Google Chrome has been working fine for me for the last month.

just can't get a reliable Rom

please, somebody please help me get a useable phone again. I'm not sure if it's how I'm flashing, the roms I'm using, or if it's just what I have to deal with. things have sucked ever since the first jb Rom I've tried.
I've had the awful non-responsive home button issue across all roms. constant random reboots, and fcs constantly. messaging, email, system ui.. everything. battery barely gets me through work. a phone should not work like this, and this stuff didn't used to happen with ics.
I'm using twrp2 and I've tried many cm10 releases, PA, liquid smooth. some work well for a few hours, none of them have been good.
please help if you can.

Sent from one bad ass, highly modified, Samsung Galaxy Note running Novena A3 using the BEST in mobile apps, XDA-Developers!
I've run several very good, stable ROMs. ICS: BlackStarVII, VIII, IX and X.
JB: Eclipse 2.0 and currently running CM10 Stable.
All of these run flawlessly for me. I flashed all with CMW.
There are plenty of stable roms out there. BlackStarX Is very stable. It is stock with the ability to tweak and customize. you would need to give more details of how your installing
swyped on my huge phone
For the home button issue, if you flash one of the "alternate" kernel's, it fix's the home button issue (or at least, it did for me).
As for a rom, I use FJ's JethroBubba w/o issue, have had 200hrs~ uptime on my phone and would have had longer if I wasnt such a flash-o-hollic and flashed the updates for it nearly the next day...
Its not for everyone, but its solid as a rock for me.

I am so ****ing fed up with this phone. please someone help me out... after loving it for months I'm so close to selling it. just problem after problem on any Rom I try. right now I can't even use my phone to make calls. it rings on the other end but there is silence on my end. I tried clearing phone data in apps, tried fixing permissions, rebooting several times. I've had this issue on each Rom on and off. right now on cm10.. forget the exact nightly but I think the one after stable.
I just don't understand. it has to be something I'm doing or not doing since everyone else is having luck getting reliability. could using cwm instead of twrp somehow make for a more reliable flash? what else could I possibly try? maybe someone could list exact steps of how they're flashing, and what they're using to do so. I would be so grateful.
Sent from my SAMSUNG-SGH-I717 using xda app-developers app
are you flashing them correctly?
Wipe data/cache/dalvik
using twrp2.. I factory reset, wipe data/cash, and dalvik. flash Rom. flash gapps. fix permissions. boot. it seems sometimes the Rom auto restores my apps. if not I restore apps with tibu.
Sent from my SAMSUNG-SGH-I717 using xda app-developers app
Your not restoring the data for apps on tibu are up? And jellybean for the note is a wip we do not have an official kernel source so its gonna be wonky sometimes. Some ROMs are better than others but they all fail every now and then jellybean ones anyways. Have u tried novena? Its a very nice and fast ICS ROM.
Family alliance
maybe I'll try going back to ics. disappointing since jb had some nice features. I've tried restoring just apps and apps plus data. but I've also flashed roms where I didn't need tibu and still same issues. but so many people are claiming reliability on these jb roms. not sure if mine is different or they just have lower expectations

Deep Breath....then pause, and think about this for a minute...
It is "VERY" likely that your problems are user related...(not to sound mean or insulting, because I do "NOT" intend to be..) But...
Roms coming to us are for the most part...clean. A factory build with mild tweaks, and certainly stable for every day use.
The problems come when users dont "clean" the device properly on a fresh flash, or they restore bits of previous rom data from non-compatible builds.
Now I make screw up's too, after nearly 10 years of android hacking. I'll forget a wipe function, or restore an app with TIBU that should "NOT" get put back without a clean app install.
Long story short, the roms here are solid in the ICS realm, and are very good in the JB side too....
I suggest Blackstar as a top pick, also the UCLF6 ICS build #5 from flappjaxxx....
Both are rock solid, and if you exhibit any problems beyond the normal android hickups, then it is likely a user/device issue, and not the rom itself....g
To follow Sarge, try a clean install of all apps from the market. Its a pain to reenter data, etc. but it sounds like you're already in pain.
Its really not that difficult. I will agree that some roms are more stable than others. Most of the JB roms do have some random issues. Here is the thing though. When you start flashing custom roms, you need to accept that you might encounter minor issues. If you are not willing to live with those issues or find work arounds, then you need to flash back to stock and be happy.
Keep in mind that devs have source code to work with ICS roms. Since Samsung hasn't dropped JellyBean source for this device, the current builds are all based on the google opensource code, without many of the device specific drivers.
Others have mentioned and I agree 100%, reinstall all of your user apps out of the play store. I don't trust any of the app backups from TiBU or any other tool. I also do a complete wipe and format everything between roms. You have to have some level of patience to dabble in the custom rom world, and it sounds like you might be missing that. See what you got after an initial install, don't overclock or change any performance settings...Install just the basic apps, from the play store and see how things work for a day or so. If things seem smooth, then add some more apps. Many people try and do too much at one time, which make isolating the problem nearly impossible.
ok, right now I'm on novena... I really hate ics after using jb, but it appears to be quite good so far at least. been on it for a few days and not really any issues. this time I also installed using cwm instead of twrp. apps were restored automatically with play store. sometimes that doesn't happen.. is there any way to install through play store if it doesn't do it automatically?

[Q] Motorola ATRIX 4g mb860 at&t would like Snapseed but not compatible

Hello people, I am unrooted and have enjoyed my ATRIX 4g even though I have been stuck with the final ginger bread ota release at&t gave us and have waited patiently for the promised ota ICS upgrade which they now posted we will not get, I am aware that there is a Leak Test ICS that is buggy, and have been mods made or provided over here by your awesome developers bringing our devices up to JB level even, but am a fan of the functioning camera and finger print biometrics personally. I am a noob as far as Android rooting but very tech savvy and with devices and software in general, every app I have wanted to use has been great on this phone regardless of what version it was made for until today... I am quite into photo editing and have a ton of photo edit apps and engage in IG a bit, we as the underdogs over at IG were always fighting to make our tweaks and edits look as good as an Iphone edit mainly because they had an app called Snapseed, I was very pleased. When I read google had purchased this app drom NIK software a month ago and today it was finally released for Android, I went to Google Play and it for the first time ever said this app is not compatible with your device, it needs 4.0 or above in other words ICS, now my main question here is if I did root flash a mod similar to ICS or the unstable leak version will Google play still just see the signature of my phone and not allow a download or if I was running a new os would it get around that issue, I did also write the developer but doubt they are too concerned about making the app backward compatible as Google also purchased Motorola and offer a mere $100.00 towards upgrading to a different moto phone and I love this ine and do not have the money at the noment to do so.. any advice would be greatly appteciated, as to a a suitable os and whether or not it would even allow us Atrix 4g users to download Snapseed if our phone is recognized by its name and autodetection by googlr play tegardlrss of os, I mean it's a fast phone I've had no problems, everything works, dual core, good ram, speed stirage etc.. thanks Stu
Shows up fine on EPinter's CM10. Market just checks what version of Android your device is using. I haven't installed it to check, but will be doing so shortly. I'll get back to you about how it fairs on our devices.
Edit: After about 10 mins of playing around, it's running pretty well. No noticeable lag whatsoever. Kinda regret paying for PicSay Pro since this one seems to have a simpler UI.

Thanks very much sir, I will now have to look into this EPinter's CM10 and learn the whole process and hopefully not brick my phone, I'm good with directions, does the CM10 have a working camera and fingerprint scanner, and can I save my whole phone image if it all went south? I also paid for PicSayPro and many others too, love graphic arts and photography so the cam although only 5mp is important at times.
Anyway thanks very much yet again for the info.
No problem. Yes, you should make a nandroid backup once you have a custom recovery. It is one of the recommended steps followed by an exclamation mark. =P The only thing lacking on EPinter's CM10 is video camera (related to missing HWA due to improper kernel source) Regular camera works fine for still shots. I use camera fx & camera 360, both work without any issues. And No, the fingerprint scanner doesn't work since it's not a part of CM source.
There is an unofficial, "official" ICS (ICSROM & ATRICS) that has proper HWA with video camera and fingerprint scanner but the battery life is terrible and the phone gets really hot. I personally had random restarts every few minutes.EPinter's CM10 does well as a daily driver, but if you're going to go through the trouble, might as well try all the roms available! =D

Thanks very much for this info, I will research these downloads, I watched a youtube vid of cm10 and looked good, seems the Atrix is a bit more of a pain to work with than other Androids but will look into the whole process of unlocking and fastboots and the nanandroid back up etc.
Greatly appreciate the help.

Yes, the Atrix is a pain compared others, but once rooted with a custom recovery (IMHO RomRacer's custom CWM 5.0.2.7 is the best, never had issues) it's just like any other device. Heck, I remember flashing 3-4 ROMs a day, it was insane! =P
I would recommend downloading Titanium Backup from the market as well. It will help you quickly backup your most used apps w/ data/settings and reinstall them after installing a new ROM. Good luck and have fun.
P.S. Thanks for Snapseed!

[Q] Stable ICS for Atrix 4G - BOTTOM LINE

Hi,
I find the posted threads confusing. I'm looking to flash ICS on my dad's Atrix 4G as he needs it for an app he considers crucial . Unlike me, he isn't very interested in experimenting with any exciting ROMs; he needs his phone to function: on and off, sleep, text, call, bluetooth, browser, camera, maybe music, without issue.
Fingerprint reader is not critical.
Is there a ROM that is quite stable in all these areas? Posts seem to say yes, but they also seem to say that stable ICS/JB is not possible because of kernel issues.
What's the bottom line?? Please advise me.
Stable ICS? No such thing. Been said countless times already. I don't see what is so confusing about that. Despite enthusiastic feedback from people, no ICS/JB is actually stable enough for day-to-day usage. That's why pretty much all of them get quite frequent updates.
Does the app in question not work on GB?

It doesn't, no. Unless there's a way to have ICS runtime environment or st but that sounds impossible
And the confusion stems from claims like "..stable enough for a daily rom!" in comments I keep finding in specific ICS ROM threads. I'm sure that's the enthusiasm you're talking about lol.
I've been using epinter's jb 4.1.2 for months. video cam & fingerprint not working. everything else, including photo-cam, works. and let me tell my experience and you decide:
in normal use, the battery can last 2 days. and seldomly, kernel seems to wake the device, causing battery drain. problem ends after a reboot.
I call it a stable enough daily rom. but it'll be your decision.

As the dev team threads have said, the ICS/JB kernel alpha release is immenint. It may be an alpha, but it may give you the results you're looking for if combo'd with an ICS or higher ROM. Current ROMs are stable to a point without the dev'd kernel. While i recommend waiting for a beta to be released, you're more than welcome to test out the alpha once its released while keeping the usual advisory warnings in mind. If you don't want to wait for the alpha, feel free to try one of the ICS ROMs, but be warned, camera issues and battery life issues are major areas to watch out for. These issues may be fixed by the dev'd kernel.
Personally i've been using Atrics v2.0 and epinter's CM 10.1. Both are good.

The video cam, fingerprint, & force-wake are literally the only issues? Or just the most frequent ones? Bc that'd be awesome but if e.g. the phone part sometimes wont open or the text messaging force closes or similar issues exist then it may be a dealbreaker for him.

Same question re epinters; additionally, re the kernel - would that simply reduce the problems associated with the ICS/JB roms or introduce its own set of issues?

I don't have any experience with Epinter's CM10, but from what i just read, comparing it to 10.1, it has the same issues. I haven't had any issues with messaging via ROM messaging app or via Go SMS. The kernel is supposed to solve the problems. However, battery life seems to still be an issue from what I've been reading. They disabled the camera for testing on the battery issue at the moment. At the moment, CM9, 10, and 10.1 all are running on variations of the GB kernel. While it was tweaked enough to make each ROM stable, the full potential won't be reached until the new kernel is implemented
The CM ROMs, in my opinion, are stable enough for daily use. Its up to you which ROM you want to use. As far as the kernel goes, I'll be trying out the alpha once its released, but it would be wiser to wait on the beta.

This is true, just remember to make a nandroid backup (webtop optional) prior to testing out any non stock ROM.
With my setup, i've got backups of 2.3.6's 141 and 145, 4.0.4, and 4.2.1, and if i'm doing a straight restore from one to another, roughly 20-30 mins until i'm back up and running.

[Q] Most Stable ICS/JB Rom?

I've gone through a few roms, including CM10.1 and AOKP from th3bill. It seems like AOKP is in fact the most compatible, as every app I've tried runs (Antutu, Chrome and Bluetooth were the deal breakers of CM10.1). I've had some issues with stuttering, but I do understand that will happen with any ROM.
Any other ROMs that rival how well it works?

The most rock-solid stable ROM 4.0-4.4??

Now that I've got my ZUGPe my Note is going into semi retirement as mp3 player / cycling gps / htpc remote and I don't care so much about features and customizing as I do about stabiltiy now. I have dealt with varying degrees of instability with many many CM and AOKP variations to stay on Vanilla-ish Android. I really really really hate Touchwiz, but do I have to go back to Touchwiz to get something really stable? I'll cut you off and say maybe my phone just never agreed with CM or AOKP so even if yours is stable mine never quite got there, never more than 2-3 days without a RR or lockup, and usually several RR each day. My old Incredible on CM goes nearly a month before an issue creeps up but to be fair it doesn't get a ton of use. Neither will the Note so I just want something solid and dependable, rather than cutting-edge. Thanks for tossing your opinions at me!
You seem to be very aware that this a loaded question and knowledgable to the fact that what runs good on one, may not on another, so I will respond to this.
I am in the same boat as you and do still enjoy the Note, even though semi- retiring it.
At the moment I am swapping back and forth on 2 roms to determine which I like best. They are older roms and never had a hiccup from neither.

I am having trouble however. I like them both.

At the moment I am swapping back and forth on 2 roms to determine which I like best. They are older roms and never had a hiccup from neither.
Rootbox and Sons of Android.
I am having trouble however. I like them both.

its PT's also
Carbonrom V 1.8
I too am not happy with touchwiz roms. And seemed always returning to one of pt's builds because they are for me rock solid. But TW.
I have flashed a bunch of roms, and try most any AOSP, AOCP, AOKP, CM, ... searching for a stable daily driver that works all the time.
I have been running Carbon Rom V 1.8 it's 4.2.2 and for my phone stable. Very stable. ALL my phone functions work perfectly, call quality, speaker phone, bluetooth, even my call recording app works. Camera, video, all good.
Really happy with this one. Battery life is a bit better too. If that is even possible with the i717.
I had been trying the nightly builds, and the huber kernel. But was getting an occasional lock up reboot, etc..
Had given up and went back to ol faithful Padawan.
Then found a Carbon Rom release version for our i717, Version 1.8. I did a full wipe, data, cache, and flashed it with TWRP. And the gapps-jb-20130812-signed.zip.
No OC but it runs fine without it. Haven't tried the huber kernel with this version, and don't plan to.

However, not to be technical, but its "Uber".
For Bulldogs function and for mine, we are not using phone function anymore. Just a sort of mini tablet.

I would base this question on "which ROM would I flash on my wife's phone".... She also has the 717, but won't let me put my dirty mitts on it That being said, without question I would put AOKP 4.4.2 on it if she finally relented. One of the most stable I have run, and blownfuze said he has no intention of giving up his note anytime soon. Which means we will get support for a while on that one.

:highfive:Yes, that is a great analogy, "which ROM would I flash on my wife's phone".
Only trouble is her phone is the i317. Carbon does have a release for her phone, but she likes the Jedi X version I have on hers.
I will have to re-investigate the latest AOKP 4.4.2 . I did briefly look at it and didn't get much past the known issues. Glad he fixed them.
I appreciate the developers here, and all the time they spend working and tweaking these ROMS.
However this Carbon works great for my i717. Camcorder, camera, gallery, all working fine. Bluetooth, etc.
I have had only one complaint about speaker phone echo, and I couldn't hear it on my end. When my wife called me from her note 2. I use the speaker phone option on about 1/2 my calls.
Thank you captemo for catching the miss spelled kernel. Wouldn't want someone searching for a mis-spelled anything! :good:
I hope this thread finds it's way to others still loyal to the i717 wanting something other than TW based ROMS. Retired or not, I like everything the device has to operate, reliably.
I did DL "Sons of Android" a couple weeks ago, and the .rar files opened up into something other than a ROM. Guess that one is gone?

I thought aokp 4.4.2 and all kit kat roms had issues with the display going crazy especially related to games and lock screens. I though the camcorder doesn't work yet for aokp. I am in the same boat. My s4 died so I am back to the old note. I am going to try carbon 1.8 or sons on android, as those are the only download links I can find. Thanks for this post.

Thank you captemo for the direction of the Sons of Android files.:good:
I did DL them. My connection must have been wonky.
I had issues with the Gapps file. It must have been a bad download for me. Tried twice. Got the ROM to load up fine, but without Gapps I didn't get a good testing done. I was using TWRP.
Without an MD5 to be sure my DL was good I probably shouldn't have tried it.
So I reinstalled Carbon V1.8 from my BU.
Since my last post, I did have a FC and reboot related to my BeWeather App. I have also had issues with this App in TW based ROMs I've tried.
I don't load allot of Apps, or run many programs. And the ones I can Greenify, I do. Maybe this is why Carbon works for me?:fingers-crossed:
I reset my weather App to update manually when I use it now. I think it updating as the program opens has been the trouble.
Is there a problem with Auto-Brightness on non TW roms? My display flickers when I unlock my screen. This happened on 4.4.2 roms and 4.2.2 carbon 1.8. Is there a simple fix I am forgetting?
The auto bright setting on the non TW based ROMs I have tried have not been as smooth as TW ROMs. I set the auto function off, and set it to low.
Some of the non TW based ROMs have the slide your finger across the top of the screen to manually adjust brightness. Nice feature.
I went back to the download dropbox provided by captemo and re-downloaded the files, and got a good clean ROM and Gapps. :good:
I am using "Sons Of Android" now, and like it very much! So far so good!
Thank you, captemo :good:
