[Q] A70 - Memory resoldering...? - Gen8, Gen9, Gen10 Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Good day!
Has anybody some thoughts about Subj(chips type, organization)?
Is it possible?
P.S. I speak about RAM,of course...

Impossible? Or nobody thought?

I'm sorry, can't get your meaning

He means:
Is it possible to solder new memory to the Archos units by removing the existing RAM chips and putting in new ones and if so, what brand and model of memory works. He was then wondering if perhaps no one has looked into or attempted this before.
As for the answer, I would guess no one has attempted this before because it is one hell of a hardware hack to desolder a chip like that and who knows if larger chips would work. I would not risk it personally, but I don't have that kind of disposable income that would allow me to not get pissed off if I trashed my unit. LOL

Not possible. CPU is on top of RAM (package-on-package, or something like that). Archos also confirmed somewhere that even if you were crazy enough to still try it, the processor can't physically access more memory.

I wonder how hard it would be to upgrade the storage of an 8gb unit to 16, 32, etc. ??

Clear...
Thanks to All for answers!

Would there be any advantage in that over installing a larger sd card?
I would assume that the memory chips are surface mount with lots of tiny legs. They would be almost impossible to change with a soldering iron. Replacement of SM chips is done with a machine that has a hot air nozzle the size and shape of pattern of legs around the chip. It melts the solder on all the legs at once without heating up the chip.

Some people are saying the memory is under the CPU, others vice-versa
Whatever the case, I guess Archos did it on purpose.
Anyway, this mod really looks harder to achieve than the one I was thinking about:

Upgrading xda II ram

Anyone know if xda II ram can be upgraded???
http://wiki.xda-developers.com/wiki/HimalayaHardwareOverview
judging from the nude picture of it i doubt it since you would have to solver some smd ram chips out
of cause one never know but i've havent seen a pocketpc with more then 128MB before
of cause one can always use sd cards of cause some applications dont like being on the sd card and it dont give more memory
think it'll give me a heart problem just taking the ram out soldering which im very bad at most of the time burning the board
You are definitely not going to be able to work with these surface-mount devices with your home soldering kit.

Put iphone to shame , we have 32GB class 4 !!!

Yes, you heard me right, we shall not be ashame or be discourage by other phones who has 8GB or 16GB storage, cause now, I show the world that we, the TOUCH PRO owner, can rejoice for joy and have surpass and become superior to the storage showdown. I represent you and the WORLD FIRST 32GB CLASS 4 Cell phone dubbed, the SPRINT PCS TOUCH PRO.
uhhh... lol. what the hell did you do to that poor thing?
thats ugly but pretty sweet, talk about hot swapping. how did you do it?
Good old fashioned modding there
I guess im the only one that sweat, what happens then?
cool. Nice work, now take the original plastic cover and re-mold it so the chip is inside the plastic cover.
lol Frankenstein Touch!
i throw ya some peanuts...
tvos
I bet an extended battery cover could keep it all together (when sprint releases it at least)

Any Pics of what it looks like inside?
yea...thats kool n all, but i doubt he'll answer any of your questions....
considering that he postd the EXACT same topic in the www.ppcgeeks.com forum...
everybody there remains stumped as well....
Interesting but I think I'll wait for the 32gb MicroSD card to come out within the next couple months!
Well done!
You've managed to even do it without duct tape!
Now try putting a bigger screen on it, that should be funny looking

I don't know what planet you're living on, but it took manufacturers nearly a year from the time they started rolling out 8GB microSDs to start producing 16GB microSDs. So more than likely, you will start seeing 32GB microSDs at the end of 2009 and as late as 2010 for bigger retail chains (like BestBuy).
Not to mention the fact that because of this ridiculously long interim period, I've actually had just about every capacity of card, 16MB (CF), 32MB (CF), 256MB (CF), 1GB (SD), 2GB (miniSD), 4GB (miniSD), 8GB (microSD), and soon the 16GB (microSD), because I can't bear waiting for the 32GB.
So assuming something like this was used:
http://aptolink.com/product_info.php?products_id=41&osCsid=44e3d010e4effdff2f210c8dfa98d1f1
Wouldent there still be something sticking out of the device on the other side?
I guess I always though that if something like this was that easy to do, third pary manufactures would be offering up adapters / back plates
http://asukal.net/blog/?p=284
this looks like something that could have been used... just take it out of the casing.. i'd be interested in this if there was an extended battery cover.

I don't know about easy, but Craves1 over at Internet Tablet Talk designed a SD->MiniSD adapter / back plate combo for the ITT and had them made, so I am thinking it is probably more of a lack of will or companies thinking there is no market?

[Q] Upgrade Possible?

Hello everyone,
I was wondering if there is a way to upgrade certain parts of the phone, i.e. processor, camera, audio card, etc. I view my phone alot like a pc, and i built my own pc...so i thought to myself. Is there a way to build an android phone? or maybe upgrade existing parts? I think it would be awesome if we were able to pick and choose what we want in our phones! Personally id like a faster processor, and more internal memory. But i feel it'd be beneficial to all people who only use their phones to do certain things and may not want other "Stock" accesories. Maybe not, Let me know what you think/know about this! Id be interested in building my own android device!
Thanks!
Pascal Borner
Sorry but this would be really unrealistic. The battery is one thing, but phones are so compact and dense that parts aren't really made to take out and put in. I know what you mean, I build computers for a living.
But the parts in phones aren't socketed or use slots, so even just to start would require major unsoldering. I briefly tried to find out how many pins the ARM v6 processor of the Eris has. I'm sure it's a lot, perhaps not as many as the 940-pin AMD AM3 or the 1366-pin Intel Core i7, but it's probably in the hundreds.
And then we're dealing with compatibilities. In desktop processors, they keep the same pin architecture for at least a couple years (but you can find the same architecture for at least five). But they probably don't worry about that with phone processors since they're even more dense than laptops so each and every phone has to be made from scratch, so, for instance, the ARM v7 probably wouldn't fit where an ARM v6 was. There's also the software compatibility. I don't know if they make ARM v6's of different processor frequencies, but I doubt it. Even if they did, you'd still have to deal with the many, many pins.
It's doubtful that they have unused spots for RAM in these phones, and it's doubtful you could just remove the existing RAM and replace it with larger without having problems, but even if so, you're still dealing with all of the pins, procuring compatible RAM of a larger logical size...
You get the idea. I guess I'm just a big ray of sunshine!
The FCC probably would object to roll-your-own cell phones, too...
Thanks for your helpful info. I guess that makes sense. I saw a website (from a European country) that you can order a phone and pick parts from them, I.e. size of internal/external drive, different MP for the camera, flash/no flash(camera) , etc. I forget the company but if you like ill post a link to it when I find it. Once again, thanks for the explaination!

Sure, no problem. Back a while (maybe years now) there was a similar offering by some company for laptops where you could upgrade parts of it at a later time because it was more modular than most laptops at the time. You could almost always upgrade CPUs on laptops as long as they were socketed, and you still can now, it just requires downloading a service manual to find out what the best order of disassembly is in order to do so, so it's not for the everyday user.
But only laptops with discrete video cards have the possibility to upgrade them, although I have no experience with these kind of laptops so I don't know how easy that is.
but...
So i was checking out stuff on replacing screen etc on an samsung s3, and i also found a section where it shows how to replace camera and motherboard, this is to replace with the exact same one obviously. But i was wondering if maybe you could find a similar camera from a different phone that may fit? I know i cant really answer the question...sorry but just adding input. And another question came to mind with regard to the upgrading of hard ware, is if it were possible lets say to upgrade the camera to a better megapixel, would there be a conflict with the os etc, ie in the coding for the phone is it configured to only be able to process and capture a picture of megapixel of the stock camera. not sure if that makes any sense
this is the link with the replacements http://www.ifixit.com/Device/Samsung_Galaxy_S_III

[Q] 8G or a 250GB HD

I'm planning to buy an Archos 70.
I'm only not sure whether to choose for the 8G with SD slot or for the version with the 250GB hard disk.
the price difference is only € 49 so that is not a major point for me.
any advice would be nice.
I would buy the 8GB one, beacuse it's thinner and faster.
If you want more space, you can use SD Cards.

I agree. I'm happy with the SD card. A movie with full AC3 is taking up ~1.2-1.5 gb and I only keep a few movies at a time.
go for the 8gb, there's less to go wrong.. Am I right in saying that the 250gb version hasn't got an SD slot? That could be annoying.

I have a 250GB version, I can tell HDD ver. is heavier than 8GB version (about 100g) but the hardware spec is completely same in this two version.
But only thing you need to know is:
8GB version have internal 8GB (*300MB for apps install) and able to insert micro SD,
HDD version have fully 1.58GB for apps install but no micro SD card slot.
*can be modified if you root it.
I'm not a fan of moving parts on a portable device. I've owned a few MP3/media devices with HD's and all of them failed 1-2 years later. Its just a reality of mechanics. You can't bang around a spinning disk and not expect it to wear over time.
I went with the 8gb model. I have a few thousand songs which fit fine on a 16gb sd card. These days I just listen to Pandora so I don't even need more than a couple gb for the OS and the apps.

If you are interested in a gently used 8GB, I have one for $200, with case, charger, car charger, and Archos' ear buds.
It has the latest firmware on it, and also is rooted with Chulri's method (which means you can boot into it as root in SDE, or boot into stock).
PM me if you're interested.

I, too, have owned HDD-based MP3 players.... mostly the earlier Archos's, such as the Jukebox Studio 20. Worked without fail for a long time. Forget how it happened, but the only reason it wasn't usable anymore was because the front of the device got dented in quite far... which not only broke the LCD screen but dented the cover of the hard drive.
I now own a 250GB Archos 70.... and have no issues so far. Know why? Because mobile manufacturers think of these things. That's why the Archos 70's hard drive doesn't stay spinning for very long. Means there's much less chance of accidentally skipping the read/write head across the platter... but also means that tracking back and forth through a video file causes said video to freeze and the skipping to take a second or a few due to the hard drive needing to spin back up. And i'm fairly certain HDD manufacturers have also added protection methods to small platter-based drives, knowing that they're generally used in portable devices.
One question i have for you.... exactly what would cause you to bang it around, anyway? I can't think of a situation.
As for the people making comments about the 8GB being "thinner and faster".... thinner, yes... by .12"..... which is rather miniscule. Hell... for a bit of comparison, the 250GB is only .07" thicker than an iPhone 3GS. Faster.... the only thing that's really "faster" is that the HDD has to spin up frequently. Then again.... seeing as even that is a miniscule amount of time..... i can't think of any situation where use of a tablet was a life or death scenario.

Prime RAM upgrade

Hey guys,
i'm wondering if anyone has had a look at upgrading the RAM at all, I know that it takes a DDR2 1GB stick atm, would it be possible to upgrade this?
Sent from my Transformer Prime TF201 using xda premium
No as its not removable, I believe. Its soldered to the board. Too much involvement. You could always open up your prime and try and let us know how it goes..lmao be warned tthough it will void your warranty.

You need to understand that when it comes to phones and tablets although the RAM chips themselves are the same as those found on RAM sticks for computers, you cannot change them as they are soldered directly onto the main board.
Even if you managed to unsolder and replace with a larger chip, and successfully boot the device, it would not use the extra space as it would not know that it had it.
The amount of memory is, as far as I know, hard coded into the device itself. I could of course be talking complete nonsense.

Even if that's not quite how it's considered to be done, I'd imagine you're right: a larger amount likely wouldn't just show up in your system. I would think that some system files and maybe the build.prop play a large part, but I don't know.
However, when I started reading this, I was thinking more of an upgrade from DDR2 to DDR3. That would be awesome, but just as unlikely? I guess the Prime's MB probably is rated only up to DDR2?
I here there is no difference between DDR2 and DDR3 when tested between TF300/TF200 anyway.

Aye.
But what if you used a faster and generally more expensive DDR3 than ASUS is? I think it could be pushed. But it would still be pretty pointless, considering that most of what's holding these devices back isn't much to do with inferior hardware so much as software

Agreed, the stock kernel is alright, but there is SO much more room for improvement. I can't wait for the updated SnB kernel to come out though. I tested the 1.0 and my device literally booted in 7 seconds. Also unlock and ROM helps tons. I easily get over 2 days of usage on my tablet with AOKP and stock kernel with medium usage as compared to maybe a day, medium usage on pure stock.
I don't know if trolling, stupid, or really adventurous. Anyways, if the last one is true, I hope the best for you!
