Why are all the custom Vibrant kernels using 2.6.32.9 - Vibrant Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

I've spent a good amount of time searching and couldn't find an answer.
I follow Vibrant development for a friend and I've always wondered why the custom kernels always seem to use an older version of the linux kernel (2.6.32.9).
For N1's our custom kernels always got updated when a new version of the linux kernel comes out. Right now I'm at 2.6.37.2.
I thought it might be a source code thing but then that got released. Then I noticed in the Vibrant CM7 thead they run 2.6.35.7.

Why don't these linux kernel updates make it into the custom kernels? There are lots of improvements. Or am I just wrong?

We have the source for that version. I believe implementing a kernel from scratch for our phones will be damn near impossible.

It uses the new kernel when you flash a new one or a rom with a new kernel but the numbers don't change. Don't know why though.

Do you happen to know what stops the kernel from being re-based on a newer version?

From what I can tell all the custom kernels run on 2.6.32.9 with the exception of the CM7 builds. There are never mentions updating the linux kernel. I can't tell from the file names or updates if it's happening.

Maybe I was told wrong. I asked a similar question a few months back and that's how it was explained to me.

I don't think you were told wrong just maybe asked a different question. After spending too much time looking it 2.3 is based on the 2.6.35.7 kernel so that explains why it's on the 2.3 builds.
I think it's more of a problem building the kernel from scratch. I'm guess they start with the source they have which is a 2.6.32.9 base and make changes.

You can't do anything
The kernel doesn't have netfilter so you can't use iptables.
Me too I would like to use it...
"Permissions denied" app from stericson. If you are familiar with Linux use terminal emulator to disable certain services in the app.
XDA ♥
It has been stated so many times now. The kernel in the x10 mini/ mini pro is compiled without netfilter support. As such, it is impossible to use iptables without a custom kernel.
p.s. Just wondering, why DID they leave iptables out? It's pretty much included in every flavour of linux i've ever used...

As you well know SE rapes us in use bummer each chance they get. Give us good enough hardware and tease us with lousy software. Like the multitouch-capable digitizer.

You wouldn't really need a new kernel. You could probably make it work my using Modules.

Just as dualtouch and overclocking. but there's little demand and use for it, so might not be worth the time and effort.
People use it for warez anyways so it might even be discouraged.

Modules? I thought netfilter hooks must be compiled into the kernel?
i'm interested in this iptables problem thing too...

There is no way to start any work on ICS, as the source code isn't released yet. I think there aren't any phones using it in the market yet.
Ics will not work on older devices like our mini pros and mini, FXP says this on his topic.

No way! People tends to mistake SDK with AOSP Code source... is not the same...
SDK are compiled libraries that allow you to create applications for Android ... AOSP Source code is the source code of Android itself.
For now, the only thing released is the SDK, which includes a COMPILED ROM of Android 4.0 for the emulator included... but that won't let developers work on any version because they need Android source code (AOSP) to integrate X10 Mini drivers and compile it in a ROM.
SO, NO, FOR NOW THERE WON'T BE ICS FOR X10 TILL GOOGLE RELEASES AOSP ANDROID SOURCE CODE ...
Cheers!
PS: Check it here, official AOSP page, no mention on ICS .. only Android 2.3 source code is published.
http://source.android.com/index.html
So u mean its impossible to port for our minis ..

The best you can get at the moment is to install a CM7.1 (gingerbread) based rom (e.g. GingerDX) and theme/skin it
I've started an ICS-ification thread here, which I'll try and keep updated if anyone manages to get any other ICS apps running under GB. As far as the look goes it gives a nice refresh:

Try changing kernels.
Okay, I will try the LP6 Kernel in the latest CM9 Build.

Ya, the LPB kernel has some issues from what I heard including: battery, touch screen and some other minor issues, i'd recommend everyone to stick with LP6 kernel for now
The kernel is the heart of you phones firmware.Thats why when you flash the wrong one you brick your phone.By changing it you can fix things that you thought had nothing to do with it.People think thats it only a kernel, just another part of the firmware but its probably the most valuable when it comes to how your phone functions.
I have sam e problem so it's most likely bug. But I guess you can live without rebooting too much

i had that kind of behaviour even on stock rom and kernel. still happens from time to time, never figured out why. not as drastic though (most of the time)
you can try this http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1312273&page=16
it worked for e when i had a similar problem

This can still happen on a stock ROM if the stock kernel is corrupt. It can be fixed by reflashing the kernel or firmware.
Glad to hear that I'm not the only one with that Problem.
Now I have the LP6 Kernel. It's better...
@shumo: I'll check your link If I will be online with my PC.
@makrilli: Yeah, but sometimes the CM9 ROM is crashing or freezing, so I have to reboot...

custom rom vs stock: speed?

im looking to download cm7 on my dad's optimus one cause official gingerbread is just too slow. does cm7 come with any speed increases, or is it just for the features? all he uses the phone for is call and text, so all i need is a SPEEDY and stable rom (something that I won't have to update ever again).
or is cm9/any other rom stable enough, and does it slow down the phone at all?
thanks
(this is for the canadian (koodo) version of the optimus one, but i'm guessing they're all the same right?)
If you want speed and stability, go with the gingerbread oxygen. It's much faster than cm7, and it's pretty much stable. If you want features though, you'd have to go with cm7

oxygen is the fastest, most stable and the best battery life you ll get on your phone!

stock froyo is the fastest rom ever!
If you don't use that phone, don't mess with it.
Stock is always more stable and if he only uses the phone for calls and txt, don't mess it up for him because problems can appear on off the market OS's like wakelocks or reboots and I'm guessing dad won't be to happy about that
