Ti 83/85/86 apps? What happened? - Vibrant Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

The Ti-8# apps developed by Doug Melton have mysteriously disappeared from the app market sometime in what looks like the past week. I thankfully already have these apps on my phone, but does anyone know why they were taken down?

Interesting....I had just redownloaded these after a fresh flash. They come in handh when I don't actually want to bring my TI-83 around with me.
Not sure why they got removed; he had quite a few emulators.

Are you guys seriously wondering why they were removed?
Anyway: http://twitter.com/supware/status/43803417298214912

They're called andy-8#
Sent from my GT-I9000 using XDA App

They got the name change quite a while ago to Andy whatever. I still can't find them in the market... it shows that I have it installed but when I click on it on my app list it says the requested item could not be found. >_>

not surprising it will be removed due to the copyright problem

anyone want to post a dl link for those of us that couldnt grab them before the pull??

I have all 3...they have been on the market for so long I was under the impression that the author had proper licenses since from what I have read TI goes to great lengths to protect their intellectual property (sites that have posted TI calc roms for emulators have been taken down).
I would be happy to post a download link for all 3 providing it doesn't breach XDA rules. Even they are all freeware the fact that there is a licensing issue would probably make it illegal to post. I don't want XDA admins getting a nasty DMCA letter about hosting or linking to infringing material.
If a moderator replies with an ok, I'll post otherwise fuhgetaboutit.

Do i really need anti virus on my phone

hey people,
i have been reading as of late that cyber crime has been increasingly growing on smartphones. should i install AV protection on my atrix is the question.
what is your opinion?
No.
As long you don't download warez apps - you are safe.
Something I've been wondering about is video files. I get a lot of video files from questionable places and I'm just wondering if these can ever contain anything malicious. Any thoughts?
I use Lookout, if you ever install third party or non-Market apps I would recommend it, although in 14+mo I have only found one app it flagged as malicious as I was trying to install it.
It's a great question to ask.
All my apps come from the Android Market, but I browse the net a lot.
Most of it is normal websites, but I still wonder if and when it will become "necessary". (then again there's always the emails)
Especially since Android is growing, and not all hackers are friendly...
Sent from my MB860 using xda premium
Coming from CrackBerry site where everyone touts BB security and thinks there is someone on every street corner just waiting to hack your phone.. I've wondered this as well. However.. I've yet to read of anyone ever having their financials stolen due to cellphone hackery. Of course.. anything's possible.. but I think as long as your smart about WHAT your downloading and from where.. there shouldn't be any issues. Most of the Trojans out there come direct from China and aren't being plagued in our Market.. yet. At least Google's good about yanking apps that are deemed malicious when they do discover them.
^ The only one that really caught my attention was the wallpaper malware incident a while back.
I'm pretty good at trying to figure out why an app needs permissions, but the average user doesn't care which IMO is kinda scary...
Sent from my GT-I9000 using xda premium
Android security problems are GREEEEEATLY exaggerated. When the media finds one malware app, they start spreading the news all over the internet.
Though, in 99% of cases such app isn't even on the Android market.
Well guess what? Same goes for iPhone - if you jailbreak and install an app outside the iTunes market that contains malware - you get screwed.
So yeah, the only way to get malware is by installing something from an untrustworthy source.
Additionally, you can use an app like Permissions Denied to monitor / retract permissions from untrustworthy apps.... or better yet - just don't install such apps in the first place. There are always alternatives for everything.

Market wont let me download

I bought icam several months ago, from market no problem, now im on 360 rom....which is still att rom.....and market says my phone is not compatible.....bull....ill be the judge of that : ) .......how do I get market to accept my phone....i know it did before.....and should now.i read about how to fix their problem....but I cant find the thread.....anyone help....thanks
Sent from my Dell Streak using XDA App
Sorry guys.....i finally found the thread.....i had downloaded "lcd density" to change my density to 200.....i changed it back to 160,then cleared cache in applications-market,and cleared data, then went back into market and uninstalled current app the reinstalled......i forgot about density......market should let us download any app.....the icam works on 200 dpi
Sent from my Dell Streak using XDA App
For the record, 360 is an unlocked Streak ROM, NOT an AT&T branded ROM.
You are placing your discontent in the wrong place. If the Streak isn't supported by the developer for whatever reason, ask the developer to make their apps compatible with the Streak.
It's apparently part of the 'new' google market policy, you must explicity declare what dpis your app is compatable with, they cant just state the range of dpis now.
120/160/240/320 are the only official dpis, you're a lot less likely to find apps that support anything inbetween, unless they also have them listed.
Thanks Manii.....i was wondering why that would matter
Sent from my Dell Streak using XDA App
But Strephon, the developer did make his app compatible for ds5.....it was just me changing the dpi,but the phone is compatible......market should say "your lcd density is not supported,do you wanna download anyway" not "your phone is not compatible" dorks......like what windows pc will say if your trying to install a driver that you know is correct, but ms has not checked it,so why windows is best os period(yes im a pc guy : ) ) it will give you the option to "continue anyway" with the driver install.....common sense,as it should be......should be the same with android, ios,or any other os.......and while im on a rant,"parent" and "child" for folder stucture....google,give me a break....just call it folders and subfolders.....cause thats what they are....instead of having to be "different" in everything, than microsoft.....coming from working on pc's for 12 yrs....and then looking at all the phone forums;i can feel my IQ dropping, lol
Sent from my Dell Streak using XDA App
It is still the developer's responsibility to list the resolutions his app supports. Therefore my earlier statement still applies.
No....its wrong for market to not let me download an app....regardless of what the dev provides to them.i bought my phone....and the app....its not googles right to try to deny me someone app.....does microsoft deny what I can download....no.....nor should any os decide what I can put on my phone....so I am right.....your being a google fan boy, just like an apple fan boy is to apple, they worship the company and never question their decisions.....think for yourself whats right, not what your told by google
Sent from my Dell Streak using XDA App
What would happen if you installed an incompatable app?
Would you:
A) Realize that it was your mistake
B) Go run and scream at the maker that their app is broken because you cant, for example, take pictures with a device with no camera
137% of the time (i researched those numbers) it's B, the only time it's EVER A is never.
Intentionally setting your device to the an unsupported dpi is not their problem. It would be like having to support devices you cant even get your app on, such as cheap android tabs that dont have market.
And every OS's app market is controlled by their makers, google is the most lax about it because of their policy.
Google: Go ahead and add whatever you want, as long as it's A) not illegal, B) no infringing, C) not malware
Apple: If we like your app, we'll let you include it, we reserve the right to change our minds all the time if we're in the mood.
Microsoft: basically apple, but prob much more consistant
Amazon: same as microsoft
Cydia: anything goes, you just have to find the right repo
Any other app store: depending on what they offer, likely similar to amazon and microsoft
They ALL still perform device checks on top of that to make sure it would even run in the first place, android has the most varied devices that need to be supported, and WP7 has the least.
Your basically asking the equivilent of why you cant install IOS5 apps on an an original iphone, even if you managed to force install it, it would never run anyway.
It's up to whoever controlls the distrubution of the app to allow/disallow the correct devices, in the case of the android market, it's in the hands of the app maker.
Also, there's a thing called an enter key dozens of periods is not the same thing.

I think I'm going to bust out laughing here. This is the funniest rant I've seen in quite some time.
First of all, I'm going to echo what Manii said about an Enter key, but go one step further. I had to rewrite your entire post in order to fully understand it, because your stream of consciousness posting shows me that you are a lazy person with an overdeveloped sense of entitlement. In the English language we have these things called "punctuation marks". They are used for various reasons. One of the most important of them is to determine where a sentence ends. Another use is to determine possession. A third use, and one you apparently know quite well, is to seperate thoughts from each other.
In any event, proper punctuation makes your thoughts easier to read. Using proper punctuation also shows people that you care about how you present yourself to the rest of the world. If you actually want your thoughts to be read and not extensively edited by people like myself, start using punctuation.
Secondly, the English language has another useful construct called the "capital letter". These are used to begin sentences and to highlight proper nouns and certain other constructs, such as "I". Whenever you refer to a company such as Google or Apple, or whenever you address someone, you use a capital letter. I capitalize "Market" when referring to the Android Market, since Android is inferred from the context. To not capitalize things is disgraceful, and really highlights how low the US education system has sunk.
Now, as to the substance of your post, you're *****ing because the Android Market won't let you download an App that you paid for. However, as you yourself pointed out you set a non-standard resolution on your Streak. The Market detects this and refuses to allow you to download the App. I can see where holding the Market responsible would make sense, but the reality of the matter is that the source of the problem with the App is not the Market and is not the App developer.
The source of the problem is you, for trying to use a non-standard resolution. No amount of blame shifting from yourself to the Market or insults calling me an Android fan boy is going to change that simple fact. So cry me a river, build me a bridge, and get over it.
I would love you to do my grammar work for Collage. How much do you charge for such a service?
Thanks for the compliment. I'm not perfect when it comes to grammar, but I make an effort to ensure my thoughts are readable. The entire point of my post is if you want someone to try and take you seriously you have to be able to present your thoughts in a coherent manner.
Mokokawi didn't present his thoughts well, and as I found out after rewriting his post so I could read it, even had he posted coherently I couldn't take him seriously. He attacked me by calling me a fan boy instead of attacking my argument. By attacking me and not my argument he proved, at least to me, that his argument was weak and could not stand up to scrutiny.
So to recap, a good post is made up of two elements. The first is that the person in question writes their words so they are readable. I understand that not everybody speaks English and has to use a translator to put their thoughts into English, but even the non-English speakers in the forum have no trouble getting their thoughts across. Posting thoughts as a "stream of consciousness" separated by ellipsis is lazy. Posting "internet shortcuts" such as "u" for "you" and "y" for "why" is lazy.
The second is that the post does not attack the poster, even where such attacks may be warranted. By that standard, my previous post was not a good one, even if dead on the mark. What I should have done was simply replied to his post and left the comments about punctuation marks and capitalization out of it, no matter how good it felt for me to say it to him.

You are supposed to boot into fastboot while sd card is removed and install sd card while in hboot i'm assuming. Either way It doesnt seem to be working for others either.

That file is the build.prop with a different name. All it does is tell the phone that there is a smart_io.crd file, but it doesn't have the right information on it. You could name anything smart_io.crd and you'll get the same results.
No linking to his website. He's been banned from xda and we won't allow linking to websites where devs charge for work freely obtainable on xda.
I don't mean to show any disrespect, nor get involved in politics, but is there a root somewhere for hboot 1.5 that's freely available?

Well by that logic, no apps can be linked to unless they're free. Unless the apk's are posted on XDA. Which is stealing....

I get that he was banned for stuff but linking to the "think tank forum section" where they are actually working on the s-off process and doing so for free shouldn't be an issue really. no?
Or is it the fact he provides stuff for charge on a completely different and unrelated section of his site that can be done for free?
regardless seems hes messing with the smart_io.zip thing that the devs here rattled around for a long time before we got s-off. So far doesn't look like much more than a bunch of trial going on and somewhat familiar to what it looked like here to start with too.
How does one boot the phone and then be able to get the sd card in? the battery needs to be out for the sd switch?

To appease your beef with a dev, I will change the link in my sig. Now I understand why he talks about you like he does. You could have asked me to remove the link rather than just helping yourself.

He is still charging $10 for downloading his Shift root kit...which can be done free of charge on xda using the same method, just as he was doing before he was banned.
I never abuse my moderator position in order to "fight my personal battles", so suggesting it is a waste of time.
If you still think I'm being a ****, go cry to the admin.
ok, back to business
So does this tool work, or not?
And where do I find this tool now that the link is gone?? (Mod, you have done a disservice here, unless that tool is already available on XDA. And if it is, where exactly is it?)
It doesn't appear to work, atm. Follow @evil_devnull on twitter or check his tweets at www.twitter.com/evil_devnull
@ scotsman, so even if he isn't requiring money for THIS project, nor on THAT site, you're going to stifle the news of his work by deleting links to THIS project at THAT site even though the issue is with another project altogether? Seems to me you should be blocking THOSE links that lead to the specific objectionable content, as we members clearly want to share news of THIS project and THAT site. Because there is NO current hboot 1.5 root anywhere free, or otherwise. I'm all for maintaining principles, but there is nothing against your stated principles on THAT site. So please stop blocking THIS news from spreading until there's something objectionable here. Otherwise it's called censorship, not protecting principles. You're blocking links just because they are associated with him and for no other reason.

You can follow him on Twittter, which has been posted, so it's not difficult for people to find.
As I said, feel free to complain higher up if it bothers you that much.
I do not have a Twitter account and do not intend to open one.
So what other site has the info available?
Mod, I suggest YOU ask the admin what to do, because this seems stupid. We need the info which you are suppressing.
How about Hboot.000012? please don't ignore our GSMers, really need to unlock + soff and start flashing.
In all fairness, the_scotsman is correct. Most of you that aren't familiar with the HTC EVO SHIFT rooting drama, don't know the full story behind why he was banned. It's easy to look at one side of the story then just ignore the rest, but probably not very wise. I'm sure plenty of you have read the information/stories on devnull's website, although perhaps you should trust in the moderator's decisions since there is a lot that happened that you guys don't know about.

All my apps are installed in app-asec

hi,
i'm new on jelly bean (upgraded from ice cream sandwitch this night), and i have a little problem.
when i buy a app, i make a backup copy (manually) in order to not have to remember my installed apps
when i wipe.
but since JB, all my new apps are installed in /data/app-asec and the format is .asec
a possibility to convert into .apk or is possible to backup the .asec and reinstall from the .asec file?
thank's

I am also having the same problem as yours. I usually manually pull .apk from data/app and keep it safely in PC. But now, every purchased app is sitting in data/app-asec with .asec extension encrpyted package, except a free app is still lying peacefully in data/app. This structure changed because of JB update ( every app is only in data/app for ICS ). Only method I came up with is using Ti-Backup and copy .apk out from backup folder.
However, I am still appreciated with any other solution to due with this encrypted install package. ( Since I prefer to pull .apk file manaully as usual ) :good:
Sounds like you are purchasing apps then making a copy in order to refund the app while keeping a copy. This is frowned upon here on XDA and is considered warez. Your thread will be reported to a moderator now.

No, it is not what you are thinking. He just intended to keep backup and restore them back in case apps are not working properly. For me, I have own 5-6 Android devices and I don't want to log in Google account in every device to download apps. So I just use only one device to download them and share to the rest of mine.
By the way, I'm also a dev. and I will not do something like that surely! I know how much pain is in developing one app.
On topic : .asec is needed to be decrypted back to .apk. Someone knows how ?

And how so, pray tell ?
I'm also in the same predicament as the OP, and i consider Google's move in JB as a blatant denial of EU (and especially french) law, which clearly states that every individual who legally purchases an app (or any other cultural "product", insofar as they can be called this way) has a (almost) god-given RIGHT to make a backup copy for safekeeping.. And it is especially infuriating considering that google wouldn't even fix their stupid "play store" app so it'd display the list of all purchased apps (as it used to do in the pre-ICS market app), making any new ROM-install a living nightmare when it comes to remembering all the apps you ****ing PAID FOR in the first place !!!
And why would you people report someone who asks such a question, automatically condemning him on no tangible grounds, making yourself the judge, jury and executioner in the process ??? it is especially stupid from you, considering that using this way to get free apps is a no-go, since the play store automatically recognizes if you purchased an app and if you didn't, it denies you any updates to the said app... You'd have to be a ****ing retard to opt for such an option, and I trust that (most) XDA members are way smarter than this (with the exception of the despicable people who rat out others on no justifiable grounds, that is)...
Are you an app-developer, or someone who actually has an interest to defend in this deal ? Your "senior member' status tells me you ain't, and my personal intuition tells me that you're no more than a lambda user who (unlike me) has probably never written down a single line of code in his whole life, nothing more than an (almost) "lamer", as we used to call them in the good old Amiga/AtariST days when I first learned programming in 68K assembler... Nothing wrong with that, except that it makes your opinion on this whole issue void of any credit, much less attention...
"Word to the wise" (and actually the easiest, most surefire way of living a long, healthy and troublefree life) : unless you have some personal interest to defend in the process, mind your own f-ing business, you nosy basterds !!
Ratting out on others is bad practice, and an recipe for trouble... Had you done this to me IRL, it would have guaranteed you a whacking 500g of very bony meat directly from my right arm right across your ugly mug.. And you even might have considered yourself as lucky at that, because I know a few very unfriendly people who for much less than this would actually have gone so far as to 'suicide' you with 2 or 3 bullets to the head, and your sorry remains would only have been discovered 30 or 40 years from now, in the cement foundations of a building undergoing demolition...
</flame off>
(My apologies to any people who might have felt offended by my words, but I can't help it, I ****ing hate delators... They're the first step to most of the horrors that my (and many other european) country has had to live in its darkest hours, sometime during the mid-20th century -during WW2, for the most ill-understanding of whoever might be reading this... Those scars never heal, they can only fade out very slowly. :s)

Query
So finally there is no solution??
what if i just want to restore my own app stored in asec folder after a ROM upgrade?
i put the files in .android_secure folder but it does nothing
Any help will be appreciated !!
Thanks
Interesting topic.
As I release a mod of a MIUI ROM weekly I asked myself some of the questions mentioned here.
MIUI system backup tool that comes with the ROM is of course not able to backup the ASEC folder stuff.
So users can backup the entire system (all settings, theme stuff, apps, contacts etc.) but not the encrypted paid apps.
Annoying thing. I wonder if it would be illegal to build a workaround, and if it is implementable somehow.
.asec files are actually little images mounted in /mnt/asec/. You can find a folder for each app there. And the pkg.apk in that folder is what you need. Other things in that folder are extracted from the apk.

MS Office apk?

Hi, not sure if this is the right place to post this, but has anyone managed to extract the apk for the new Android version of Microsoft Office? They have as usual released it only in the US
Thanks in advance!
Anyone?
Is there really no interest for this? I understand that it also requires an Office 365 subscription, but I would have thought someone on the www would have deemed it worthy to extract.

Of course there's interest, but rather than bleat some of us search. Ever heard of google? It took me less than 5 minutes to locate, download and install the APK.
It works fine so google for "microsoft office android apk" and see what you can find
And the "douchebag of the year" award goes to...Bulbous! Let's all give him a big hand...
You think I didn't search? Did you see WHEN I made my first post? There was nothing available outside the Play Store on August 1st, even though it's pretty trivial for anyone living in a supported country to extract the apk.
Second of all, have you seen WHERE this apk is now available? Crappy sites that often mention that it's "cracked" or "full version" or some other such nonsense. How can I trust a site that could have inserted anything it wanted to in that apk?? Do you get ROMs from "The Dubai Emporium of Sheep Guts and Android" or do you come to XDA?
All over this site there are countless examples of people who asked for geographically restricted apps and got them, without all the crap you seem intent to give me. Also, as you can see I didn't post the second and third time until several days had passed in between, so any bleating is done strictly by you on your sheep farm, mofo.

You don't want me to post the link then?
After my OP I also found links on external sites, but none that seemed trustworthy...it would have been nice if a member of the community here would have extracted an apk for anyone who would have wanted it, as has been done many times in the past for other apps.
In any case, they did say they will expand it to 120+ countries in the future, so if no one steps up I'll just wait for "the future".
