I just noticed the past couple of days that when I go into the city my phone doesn't switch from Edge to "H+" it just sticks to Edge. I have run a speed test multiple times to confirm it was still on 2g data. I have to turn my phone off and on in order for 3g speeds to occur. I have replaced my sim card and no better results.
Any ideas??

i'll be interested in a fix also but a faster way to get 3g would be to put your phone in airplane mode and back again instead of restarting.

on my captivate i used to be able to set the network selection to use auto, 3G only and Edge. i dont see these options in wireless settings, i jsut see an option to select network. is there a way to set it to only use 3G?
No because the phone only shows either E for edge or H+ for 3G or HSDPA.
More than likely you could get an application from the market that lets you switch and see if that works, but.... what's wrong with the way it manages data now?

Well lately ive noticed my H symbol flashing too 3g for a few seconds then back. Im on gingerblur and not sure if its the Rom or what, but its wierd. Has anyone with gingerblur seen the 3g symbol.

Newer phones are using "smart" radio management chips (or something like that). The newly released Thunderbolt is the same way. Which sucks because it was a good tool for battery management
it sometimes switches to edge and i wanted to force it to stay on 3G. my captivate would do the same thing and keeping it on 3G worked fine.
is there any hacks to add this setting?

Lol it switches to edge because you don't have a 3G ssignal; what else is it supposed to do if you don't have it?
You can choose (for throat part) to go down but you can't just magically get a better/faster signal.

That's all well and good, however if you completely lost 3G then it wouldn't be there, even if you have the setting locked.

i understand that it wont give me a better signal. but i use my cell in low reception area and dont want it to constantly switching to edge and back and kill my battery. like i said i've used the captivate with 3g only and never completely lost 3G even with the captivate's crappy radio.
Wcdma only

Lol I think I should state this.
I understand what you're saying and I am not saying I think you're wring; on the contrary, I actually do that as well, however I move mine down to edge when I'm not going to be doing anything data intensive.
I was just stating what I said to inform people, just in case someone thought you could force 3G at ALL times, which isn't possible if you aren't getting 3G in your area.

How do you make the selection stick? I tried a reboot and everything
Sent from my MB860 using XDA App
i think you have to redo the setting when you reboot.
Edit: i just notice that it also changes back when i plugged it in overnight. is there a way to keep this setting permanently?
I too am needing to set my phone to connect to Edge only. I have 1 bar at the house when my network type is HSDPA. When connected to HSDPA at the house, with one bar, I constantly get dropped calls or my phone may not ring at all. If the phone decides to connect to Edge, which has a full signal, then everything seems to be a-ok. Most of the time the phone completely disconnects from all networks when it switches from HSDPA to Edge... not cool.
I can not get this sucker to connect to Edge only via setting the preferred network type to WCDMA. The phone will automatically set itself to GSM/CDMA auto (PRL) if I manually try to set WCDMA as the preferred network.
Rather annoying to say the least. ATT is the only carrier that has a full signal at the house. That's the only reason I that I signed up with them.

i just select the band i want and press the back key. usually the signal strength indicator will show no signal for a couple of seconds, then it will change to what i had selected. thats it

thats because wcdma is 3g only. you need to the GSM option, thats edge.
GSM=edge only
wcdma=3g only
GSM auto=3g or edge, phone decides depending on signal strength
Ever since around 6pm pst my tb has bars but will not show a 3g/4g connection. I can recieve calls but cannot do anything datawise. I'm typing this over my wifi as a result. I've tried a reboot with no success. Any ideas? I'm running BAMF 1.7 Remix. If anyone in the SF area has similar problems (I'm in Berkeley) I'd like to know.
Thank you.

Do you have any kind of battery saving app or something that turns off data while your phone isnt in use? It might have glitched and isnt turning it back on. ( i know this happens sometimes when i use JuiceDefender)
i can't say about the SF area, but in Denver there has been inconsistent coverage the past week. Reading in other forums seems that VZW has had some spotty service just recently.
Is your back cover snapped on nicely?
Edit: And every once in awhile, 3G/4G will be down in certain areas. You could also try to switch between CMDA mode and LTE mode, that actually got my phone out of 1X several times.

+1 agreed with switiching CDMA and LTE modes
Is anyone else having an issue connecting to 3G. I have to disable LTE and then reboot my phone to get 3G to work. Every time. This also causes an issue when trying to update PRL/Profile. It fails 4/5 times with an error code before it actually works.
Also, the wireless tether connects via 3G but hangs over LTE.
Any insight would be great.

Oh and just some more info. My LTE works great. Hasn't dropped once yet. Fast too

Yup i am noticing a huge problem with my device NOT connecting to 4G (i am in Dallas) and i AM noticing my device saying 3G but the TRUTH is its stuck on 1x. I have Mobile Signal Widget Pro and it will show 1x or an exclamation point instead of H or EVDO data. When the device gets stuck like this its a battery killer.
I too have to shut it off and turn it back on.
I also found that sometimes i have to switch my connection to CDMA only and not LTE/CDMA.
I had that issue the other night... Went away immediately when I paid my bill though... Go figure, lol.

I was having a similar issue, and I was getting an error code 1012 when trying to update profile. If it persists either call Sprint or try a data reset.

Has anyone else experienced decreased data speeds when switching back and forth between 3G and 4G? Occasionally I'll travel through areas that don't have 4G coverage, and when my phone switches back to 4G from 3G my data speeds will plumit or the phone won't switch back to 4G unless I turn off data then turn it back on again.
Yesterday evening my phone's data speeds were crawling. I took the usual steps of turning off data, turning on airplane mode, restarting the phone, and pulling the battery. It wasn't until I pulled the sim card that my data speeds were back to normal. (Check the speed test results.) Is this in any way normal or is this a bug of some type?

I have not seen this specifically. I have noticed that sometimes the 4G speed seems slow, but have only seen it at work where service is generally spotty anyway. For me, when the 4G is super slow, it usually drops to 3G or even 1X (sometimes zero signal). I've been using the "LTE OnOFF - HTC Thunderbolt" utility by Cunning Logic with good success. Whenever my phone drops into 3G and doesn't come back (or no signal), I can force it back to 4G with the utility. I cannot say for sure, but the tool appears to turn off the radio, set the desired mode, then turn the radio back on. This usually resolves my issue, unless I am truly in a dead zone.
Just going into airplane mode will bring it back to 4G unless your on elm st. or something. I notice if you downloading our using data pretty heavily and it drops to 3G it won't always come back on It's own.

That's what I found odd. Everything indicated that I was still on 4G; I wasn't on 3G or 1X, but I definitely had speeds that belonged on 1X. I'm baffled - is this a hardware, software, or network issue?

Airplane mode doesn't do the trick for me. (And no, I don't live on Elm Street. ) My speeds dropped again this morning and I went straight for the SIM card; I didn't even bother trying airplane mode.
Like you, I've also noticed that after streaming a large amount of data that I'll drop to 3G and it won't switch back to 4G unless I toggle the mobile network off-and-on. I'm always streaming music on Spotify and I've seen this happen more times than I'd like.
Hi everyone, I'm new to AT&T and HTC. I'm confused on how the networks should switch.
The area I'm in doesn't have LTE yet so lets leave this out of this
I'm having a signal issue at work. Where I sit I get 3 sometimes 2 bars (-97 to -101dBM) on the 4G network. But data doesnt work. When I use the browser it say error connecting to network and I when I run speed test it either doesnt find a tower or just sits on ping test.
When I look at mobile network type it keeps flipping between HSDPA and HSPAP. I've never see the phone change to the edge or G network unless my battery is almost dead.
Does this sound right or could I have a messed up radio? It does work great when the signal is in the -70s.
Please help. Wondering if my phone is messed up. It is still stock, locked bootloader, unrooted at the moment.

To turn off LTE, open dialer, type in "*#*#4636#*#*", then click "phone info", you will see "GSM/WCDMA/LTE auto" in the middle of the setting page. Switch to "WCDMA preferred" to use only 3G without LTE. You can also choose "GSM" to use only edge network.
Is there not an App or Widget that can toggle LTE and Edge networks?
