[Q] Question about Sense? - Thunderbolt Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

I had an HD2 when it first came out. Bought it on a whim. I regretted it about the second day I had it. The phone had SOOOO many glitches, especially with HTC sense. I had to reset it pretty much twice per day. Screen freezes, galore!! So my question is what glitches do you see with HTC sense on this phone? I am pretty interested in getting this phone, especially since verizon has such better coverage in more areas than T-mobile. But I am torn since with my N1 I can still use it as a wifi hotspot for free, tho this reason is probably suited under a different topic. Thanks!

i personally love htc sense lol i have no issues as of yet

I have had a DROID Incredible since the summer and haven't had any real issues with HTC Sense. Mind you I was only running the stock ROM for about a week before I was rooted and on a custom ROM... But regardless I haven't had any issues w/ sense.

NO issues with HTC Sense at all.

Thats good to know. I am still a little bit wary of putting a custom ROM onto any phone for fear of bricking the device, but maybe one of these days I will try it out. Maybe more of the glitches came from WinMo 6.5. I remember there were text messaging bugs and media player bugs. If you put too many songs onto the SD card, the voice control feature would crash for some reason.

Can't never Eva compare the hd2 windows running sense than a tb or any android running sense.. way different.. and no. No freezing... Perfect example. I still have my hd2 but now running androind(nand) with sense. ***** runs flawless.

I love sense and I think there is a lot of false hate going on with it. If the ones hating it would give it a try I bet half of them would also love it. With that said, some people think its cool to hate on things, so they jump on the bandwagon.
Sense on the thunderbolt is even beter then the incredible.

They have already discussed Sense 4.0 for future devices. This device will likely get ICS with Sense 4.0 near the beginning of the year.

By the time ICS hits there will be several ROMs, and those ROMs will obviously translate to ICS eventually.
I would like to see sense and ICS but I think I'm going to return the Rezound and get the Nexus.

im always interested in the reasons why people like or dislike these devices.
I got this beucase I just came from a samsung (droid charge) phone, and before that I had an HTC phone (dinc).

and another friend has the samsung infuse
we all agree that samsung phones are horrible with build quality and GPS issues.
I never had the problems with my dinc that i had with the droid charge. The UI is horrible, so you have to get ASOP or just fail with Touchwiz.
Sense is pretty much awesome compared to the other manufactures overlays. Is it better than stock, thats up to the person, but at least with the rezound we can have the option for both.
With the nexus, you get a crappy GPS (proven and documented issues) , and the no choice between stock or sense.
If you hate sense, then i can see why sticking with this phone sucks.

Couldnt agree more. Granted that Verizon locks out HTC HUB, so Skinds are out of the question, but i think Sense dominates most Manufacture UI's that are out today. And I happen to frikken hate the STOCK UI....LOL....but i love MIUI tho. Im interested in seeing ICS in person tho. Not many changes in the UI with ICS, but its looks awesome tho. Im on the fence about this one, and I jsyt came from Sprint on Monday. Guess im an HTC person. Speaking of Skinds, has anyone been able to get any installed? Ive tryied and installed quite a few already (knowing they prolly wouldnt work anyway) and they installed just fine but when i head into the "Applications" section there not listed for me to uninstall them. Pretty wierd. Feedback on this would be great. Sorry to go [OFF-TOPIC]

Not a problem. I'm not sure what apk Hub is, in fact, it might be laced into another apk. HTC Sense.com is however an apk.
can't you just install sense 3.5 skin APKs via astro or something? I know hub won't work but we can get the skin APKs and install them I think

It's not that I hate the device, it's just that it reminds me too much of my Incredible and I want something different. I love the look that Sense brings to the phone (but I hate the launcher) and I love the option of going stock or having a sense rom, that was a major reason why I wanted this phone in the first place along with being able to add in a MicroSD card. One of the main things that's annoying me now is that the phone seems to lag when I' m using ADW EX or swiftkey X. It feels like I'm back on my Incredible! I read around that a factory reset helped some people so I just did one and hopefully it will improve the responsiveness of the device.
It's just that I feel like I'm missing out by not getting the Nexus. Root isn't guaranteed with the Rezound like it is with the Nexus, since I bricked my Incredible 5 days after I got it the lack of SBF/NVflash-type tools kind of scares me now because there's no safety net in case your device randomly decides it wants to turn security back on. Also there's always tons of modifications done with Nexus devices because they're developer phones. With my OG Droid I was messing around with roms and kernels every few days checking out what I liked the best about them. Once I switched to the Incredible in March, I liked the change but quickly grew sort of disinterested in flashing roms and kernels about 2 months after I had it because every rom was essentially the same in the end. That may be the case with the Nexus since but only time will tell.
I think root and S-Off are going to make this device amazing. We'll get stock ICS ROMs, Sense ICS ROMs. ROMs to fix the little issues. Everything gets better with custom ROMs. I didn't buy this device for the stock experience. I got it because I love the development the community does on Sense devices.
Rabble rabble rabble.
I think the only people who don't buy their device to customize are the ones who got it from work for free, and those who have no idea what some phones are capable of(Grandma and Grandpa who were tricked by carrier to extend their contract), lol.
I agree that root and S-off will definitely make this device better, Sense and ICS was also another big factor for me.

Thinking about going to the Rezound. question..

Im coming from the HTC evo from sprint. Im on my way over to Verizon. Im interested in both the Rezound and the nexus...
Is there a reason to choose the REzound over the nexus? It doesnt seem like the Rezound has full root/s-off etc etc right? Is it a matter of time, or do they have this thing locked down?
Rezound have radio lock thats all
Rezound is faster and has alotttt stronger signal. Basically, HTC owns samsung

I was all about the nexus but after being burned so often by buying and trying to justify my purchase waited and was about to buy a rezound till I got it as a replacement and its awesome. I love this phone so far. Great camera, It's really quick, screen is amazing and its the perfect size

I came from the EVO as well. It was this or nexus, I chose this for the better camera and beats, which I can't go without now. Plus the free headphones. Only selling point of the nexus is ics but a senseless Rom gives a close experience which should get better in time. Plus sense 3.6 is cool and miui is in progress as well as sense 4.0
Sent from my ADR6425LVW using XDA
Came from Evo 4G on Sprint as well. Went through 2 Nexus's before giving up and getting the Rezound. Signal and call quality on the Nexus was horrendous. I would hear about every third word the caller was saying which made for some pretty interesting conversations.
The ONLY advantage to the Nexus is the ease of "tweaking" it but I un-locked, flashed a recovery, and flashed a rooted ICS Rom on my Rezound in about 10 minutes.
Get the Rezound ... NO BRAINER
IMHO
Edit: BTW ... The return rate of the Nexus is upwards of 20% according to my Verizon Rep. She told me she wished they would pull it off the market.
I came on over from the Evo 3d and I love the Rezound and coverage so much I've yet to root it. This phone has almost cured my flashism. Though I'm on vacation this week, I might get in on the rooting and madness on this side of town soon.

Thanks guys.. Im hesistant with the Nexus because IVe heard about samsung not rolling out updates etc etc as fast as they should.
Rezound vs GNex
I poured over this decision back in December. I opted for the rezound because it has an sd card slot and the GNex doesn't. The camera and processor are also superior. I have mine OC's to 1.8 GHz. It is saddled with s-on though. HTC allows users to unlock the bootloader but we cannot flash radios and kernels directly via recovery. It must be done in the bootloader or via fastboot. Not the end of the world but not as easy as an s-off device. This nut seems to be a tough one to crack too. A few devs have been at it since December but no joy

What do you mean by that?
editeD: lolwut I got it now haha fail.
Look, I'm not expert by any means, but I feel I need to chime in. I have owned both phones. The Nexus was probably the sweetest phone I thought I ever had.. Everything seemed to work flawlessly. After a few days I constantly had problems with the Battery, Signal strength and SOUND. Let me explain. ICS was awesome IMO. It worked great and was a really nice change. But that was the only thing that was nice on it. The roms that are coming out now for the Rezound by far make this the best phone I've ever owned. Speed, picture, ICS and I personally like Sense. SO for me to give anyone advice it would easily be GO REZOUND!!
BTW.. Ask this question in the Nexus forum, and I guarantee you'll get a different response. So basically, you need to go in the store, and give yourself 20 minutes to mess around with both phones. Just keep in mind that Samsung has a reputation as having terrible radios. Be sure to listen to the sound on both. And take a look at the resolution and clarity.. A few youtube videos should do it for ya! ALSO, the fact that you get a nice set of ear phones.
I just got the rezound last week and love it. I'm coming from a sensation 4g this is a lot better phone than that is. Plus now we have an ics leak that your phone doesn't have to be rooted is sweet. And when the official ota drops you can still update

Don't think. Just buy a rezound.
Sent from my ADR6425LVW using xda premium
I faced the same decision, and I went for the Rezound. The camera, reception, and overall build quality of this phone is better than that of the Nexus. I really don't like Sense, and that almost made me go for the Nexus, but software is upgradable and hardware isn't. I'm currently running a senseless ROM (XTreme's), which isn't AOSP, but it's close. It seems like there is being progress with ROMs completely lacking sense (MIUI is being worked on and apparently has RIL in-tact), and once CM9 gets its RIL issues fixed, my phone will feel complete. Even without that, I am very happy with this phone. The screen is amazing, even when compared to a Samsung device (Nexus). The battery life isn't great, but it is an LTE device... I never get signal drops, and I'm always on 4G.
okay well with that being said, what do you guys loose not having s-off?

Not much. It makes it more difficult to flash kernels, but it is still relatively easy using adb or just your phone. You can't flash radios (well at least without being relocked), which I think is the major downside of s-off. Also, unlocking through the HTCDev method won't let you go back to complete factory stock (without the bootloader saying relocked), so if Verizon happened to check, they can see that you MAY have voided PARTS of your warranty (not a big deal).
hmm Seems like its too much bull**** to deal with...

It's really not that bad. Choose the phone you want to go with, but don't let that sway you too much. We may not have as many developers and ROMs as the Nexus, but we have some really great devs. And flashing ROMs and kernels really doesn't take noticeably longer without s-off, and becomes second nature
If you want stock ICS go Nexus.
If you want better screen, eventual Sense ICS (AOSP probably won't be possible until we can get s-off I think), and removable SD card go Rezound.
I've been a stock Android fan since the original Droid, but I've really grown to like Sense and Sense 4.0 looks even better. I do want an eventual AOSP.

Should I get this phone? please help me decide.

Hello folks, I am no stranger to HTC land but am currently using an Epic 4g touch. After the terrible amount of lag I experienced on my Evo 3D I swore to never go back to HTC again because of sense. I am an exteme speed demon, lag in the UI and basic phone functions make me go crazy, I just can't take it.
I have played with a few floor models and they seem nice. I must ask, after using the phone for a period of time and using custom roms, what's the verdict on this phone? Should I get this instead of the Galaxy S 3? Please note, lag is my biggest concern.
I think most people agree sense is better than touchwiz. So far this phone is great being stock, but if you flash custom roms the phone is even better and thats the key in any phone so far.. Custom roms fix the issues carriers put in there. I say get the phone, build quality is amazing
Why dont you make up your own mind and stop posting things like this on a device specific forum. Questions like "is device A, better than device B" usually end up in piss matches.
Sent from my EVO using XDA
I'm not so much trying to start a pissing match, rather I'm asking you folks if after a month or so of usage if you have noticed lag or slowdowns. As touchwiz is much less RAM consuming than Sense is, I wanted to know as a speed purist if Sense bogs down this phone like it has in my previous HTC experience.

Have you flashed any ICS roms on your 3d? If you have you will quickly notice
how much more efficient sense runs on ICS. Now imagine running sense on a much better chip. Hope that answers your question. Case close.
hes right.. sense runs better on ICS for some reason, get the phone
I don't mean to sound harsh, but normally (because tons of people have been incredibly happy with their phones) I would say yes, get the phone, you won't be sorry. However, reading your OP, I get the feeling that if you do get the phone, a week later we'll all be seeing yet another "OMG, sense sux! HTC broke multitasking!!!! This phone lags soooooo much!!!!1!" thread. So my advice to you would be no. You will not be satisfied with this phone.
Go with the GS3 -it has 2GB of ram you know...
I've had mine now for a little under 24 hours, rooted within 1 hour of owning, and have flashed 3 roms so far. I can say I love it, best phone I ever owned, came from EVO og. My wife has the iPhone4s, and though she says she loves her phone she did say she was now jealous of my EVO LTE. I think you should at least get it, run through the paces in the two weeks you have to decide. Then go from there.
Sent from my EVO using xda premium

The Evo LTE isn't dissapointing, its HTC Sense.

I've noticed a few petty complaints about the phone, and they are all pointing fingers in the wrong direction. The phone itself is great. It's the software.
The software is crashing my phone more than my og Evo. I'm pretty sure I'm not the only one. This phone has double the ram of the OG EVO so, it's definitely not the hardware.
Also, Sense has to be the culprit for killing multitasking. There's some ROMS out there that can be flashed on the Evo LTE, that eliminate this problem. Another Sense disappointment.
And last but not least. The look and feel of sense is beginning to look and feel very dated. This is why people are going crazy over dev support, right now.
I'm not a HTC Sense hater, but they definitely need to change it up asap. If I were them I would just put out a, high end pure Google Android device and start from scratch.
Maybe, put a scrolling setting tool bar, that scroll left to right on top of the screen, instead of a drag down bar. Change the flip clock its old and boring now. I had that on my HTC Mogul! It's time to change the game up. And I think it's about that time
Certainly wish it was a bit more polished. Wasn't there something floating around awhile back that they only had 4 months to make sense 4 with ICS?

That may be true. I think I can recall seeing a article about that.
I'm running sense 4 on my 3d, and I have to say that sense 4 is amazing. If you want a change then go with a different phone. I'm not saying that sense doesn't have minor bugs, because it does. But if you're looking for a different look and feel then change it up a bit.
But I like my Sense 4.
I love Sense, although I'm hoping Jelly Bean will make performance and stability improvements, of course. It does crash and restart for me, but rarely. It might be the ROM and apps you've loaded that are causing these issues, along with flashed mods, and so forth. Every time these things are done, increases the chances of destabilizing the platform. This is a part of the game that should be embraced.

That's definitely not out the question. Once you've been loyal to a company since the HTC Mogul, then you may find it just a little bit harder to leave from a hardware standpoint. Like I said Sense isn't bad. It's just buggy and dated.
If Sense is the same during my next upgrade, I'm definitely jumping to another phone. Sad to say.
And yes thanks to this XDA I can change it up a bit. This site has a hand in what a lot of the consumers buy, believe it or not, just because of the hard work of these Devs do to bring longevity to our phones. They spoiled us.
My reasoning now is for the users who don't root. It's a struggle right now.

Yeah, hopefully jelly bean iron some things out.
As far as the crashes, im pretty positive its sense. I have no widgets beside the sense clock and power setting widget. Everything else is minor apps that control some of nothing. My only questionable app is Facebook. That app is so horrible. It does too much and hogs data like crazy. I'm always, clearing my cache on that app. And I won't decide to root, until maybe October.

I happen to love Sense and I am not rooted and never plan to. I like the iconic flip clock and believe it sets HTC apart from all the other androids out there. I do get bored with the "look" of my screens from time to time and change things up with Beautiful Widgets, themes, keyboards and the like. I wish the continuous scroll of the home screens remained (not the carousel) however. At least with Android these phones can be totally customized, which is why I could never be an iPhone user.

I'd have to agree. I got the OG EVO on release day and absolutely loved it. Then came Gingerbread and all the sense reboots. I was hoping with this phone the sense reboots would go away, unfortunately I was wrong. It amazes me with the amount of RAM this phone has, that with very little apps installed, I only have about 200 MBs free. I ended up rooting and flashing CleanROM DE and love this EVO all over again. I just wish I wouldn't have had to root to avoid the HTC Sense reboots. I did try APEX Launcher for a bit, but noticed it would restart as well, though not quite as bad.

I wish I wasn't scared to root as of now. I know there would probably be at least two more updates from HTC are gonna come and I'll wait until then. I was gonna try Apex but thanks for the heads up. I don't use widgets and my apps are all basic, that's why the reboots are kinda bothering me.
The best phone I've ever had or used nonetheless.
I have yet to run into any problems with Sense at all. It's elegant, slimmer than before, and adds features that people from the Windows Mobile days would consider to be basic. (Hello? It's 2012, Google. Where the hell is my T9 dialing?)

I was stock the entire time I had my first Evo LTE. That was for about a month and a half and I didn't have any problems. Got my new Evo yesterday (I had a radio issue that required a replacement) and rooted it because I had to start from scratch anyway. No issues rooted either.
Actually HTC Sense this year looks nice IMO. I really like the way the dock looks. One thing i dont like is the locksceen, as i fee the stock one looks best. There are some thing i wish google would incorporate into the next OS. The way HTC handles adding things to your home screens is MUCH faster than stock aosp. In stock, you have to do it one by one, or at least slowly. On sense, you do it much faster and can even add multiple widgets. Also, if u run out of space sense automatically makes a new homescreen for you. I also like the quicksettings menu (even though HTC took it off i think).
I haven't had one problem since I got the phone on launch day. With sense or anything else.
Love this device!
Sent from my EVO using Tapatalk 2
I like Sense 4.0 a lot; I believe it's the best UI skin out there as far as what comes from the manufacturers. I like the widgets and the unified look and functionality of everything. It's all very polished and professional.
The only problem I have with Sense is in the way it handles multitasking. I would love to be able to pause a game to answer a text or email, and come back to where I was without the game fully reloading. Or keep 2 or 3 browser tabs open without everything reloading when I come back to it from something else. Running Nova and using less widgets helps somewhat, but you lose all the "good stuff" about Sense when you go that route. So I'm patiently waiting for a good ROM that fully addresses the memory management issues while letting Sense run to it's full potential.
I have absolutely no problems with my EVO 4G LTE. If you think Sense is the same thing it's always been, try going back and using a Sense 3 phone, like the EVO 3D. Then you'll see a difference. It's just the luster of a new product has worn off for most people. Really, most of the complaints are over petty stuff. In the end, it's a phone. It plays games well, but if you want something to do more, buy a PS3/XBOX. It plays great quality movies, but if you want something to do more, buy an HDTV. Web browsing is great on this device, but if it's still not your style, buy a laptop. Sure there's a convenience of having it all there, but really, it's time to stop being petty about the small things.

Hell me get back to Android w/ the DNA....

Hey guys, quick back story. I have been an Android user for several years. I've had phones such as the Incredible, Charge, Thunderbolt. Rezound, Razr Maxx and Galaxy S3. I just recently got rid of my Galaxy S3 for a HTC 8X Windows 8 Phone. I was getting tired of Android and constantly flashing ROM's. I was a flashaholic and had to get myself away lol.
Anyhow, after about a week with the 8X, I really like the phone and OS. However, I'm starting to miss Android. I miss the larger screens and wealth of apps.
Fast forward to today and I'm sitting here considering switching back. And if I do, I'm not getting another GS3 since I've already been there, done that so to speak. My frontrunner is the DNA.
I know nobody can make the decision for me, but I want opinions! Should I switch back, and would this be the phone to get?
I also have a couple questions before I jump back:
1. On my Rezound, homescreen scrolling lag in Sense absolutely killed that phone for me. I can't stand any type of scrolling lag and I'm very sensitive to it. Does that exist on the DNA, or is that a thing of the past? Please be honest.
2. I see that the phone can already be rooted, but does the future look bright in that department?
3. I think I know the answer, but I will throw it in there. For normal, moderate usage, is the battery life acceptable? On par with the GS3?
Thanks guys!
hey man. so yeah launcher lag was bad on rezound. however, in sense 4+, they tightened it up and it's very rigid and never lags.. ever. all 7 of my screens are full of widgets and icons and it's smooth.
battery I tend to get 12 hours with 3 hours screen on time. pretty much the same as my s3.
not sure about rooting yet since I'm still chillin on stock haha

I'll answer #2 the phone seems to have a very talented dev team. Already there are a few Roms and kernels. the future looks bright. As of now I know people are working on Asop and even viper rom.

No lag
Bright future, there are some great devs for this phone already
On par or slightly better.

No lag whatsoever....period. I came from a thunderbolt and that too would drive me crazy, even with a polished rom and without widgets. I'm not sure if it's Project Butter, Jelly Bean, Sense 4+, 2g of RAM or the insane processor in this thing that makes it run smoothly. Probably a little bit of all of that.
Battery life is good enough for me. I work in and out of 4G area at work but I am on wifi pretty much the rest of the time and it has been awesome. Never charge mid day anymore. Always with 20 to 30 % by the time I go to bed. And the wireless charger is awesome. Highly recommend it. I find myself using youtube more often than I should because of the awesome screen too. I would say I am an average user.
Have not found a reason yet to root. I will wait until it becomes more stable, easier before I go that route. But I'm sure there will be good ROM in the future....at least I hope so.
Ok guys, I'm pretty convinced that I'm gonna give the DNA a shot. One thing I noticed about this HTC 8X Windows Phone is that it locked on satellites really fast. Much, much, much faster than my GS3. It also had better reception than my GS3. Can I expect the same things on the DNA or might that have been a Windows thing?

The s3 just has horrible radios.

I doubt the development will be here that long. Look at the Thunderbolt. They had to wait for ports.
I've owed many smartphones and used/supported countless others. (including the gs3) The DNA is the first phone that has ever even come close to keeping up with me and the speed at which my brain operates. Zero lag period, regardless of how many apps you have running. I haven't even considered OC'ing and that's usually the first thing I do. The battery is decent and better then most. I typically charge over night and once mid-day. Most other phones I've had to charge 2 - 3 times a day. The dev scene is about average for a phone this new and s-on. Once s-off is achieved I expect it to blow up.
The DNA is the first phone that I've had that wouldn't bother me if there wasn't a big development team behind it. Like you I was/am a flashaholic, but honestly with a couple of Mods I've been golden on this phone. It's snappy, the radios are great (looking at you Samsung) GPS is phenomenal, and battery is pretty much the same as the GS3. Wireless charging is a plus, awesome to just sit it down and let it charge overnight, or on my desk at work.
The phone works great out of the box, only a couple of annoyances for me was the bloat, Wi-Fi reminder, and battery icon, I love everything else. Sense has come a long way since the thunderbolt (last HTC phone I owned). If you had to be stuck with a manufacturer's skin, Sense would be my pick.
.........DNA.........

What do you mean by that? I got the TB about a week after releases adn there were A LOT of roms being made. What you are talking about is a little bit after the major devs started jumping ship. I think the Thunderbolt had it's fair share of roms
I hope the DNA gets a fully working MIUI; I really like the themes you can get on MIUI
My thunderbolt kept giving me a roaming flashing triangle whenever I ran an MIUI rom which started driving me crazy.
