Should I get this phone? please help me decide. - Sprint HTC EVO 4G LTE

Hello folks, I am no stranger to HTC land but am currently using an Epic 4g touch. After the terrible amount of lag I experienced on my Evo 3D I swore to never go back to HTC again because of sense. I am an exteme speed demon, lag in the UI and basic phone functions make me go crazy, I just can't take it.
I have played with a few floor models and they seem nice. I must ask, after using the phone for a period of time and using custom roms, what's the verdict on this phone? Should I get this instead of the Galaxy S 3? Please note, lag is my biggest concern.

I think most people agree sense is better than touchwiz. So far this phone is great being stock, but if you flash custom roms the phone is even better and thats the key in any phone so far.. Custom roms fix the issues carriers put in there. I say get the phone, build quality is amazing

Why dont you make up your own mind and stop posting things like this on a device specific forum. Questions like "is device A, better than device B" usually end up in piss matches.

I'm not so much trying to start a pissing match, rather I'm asking you folks if after a month or so of usage if you have noticed lag or slowdowns. As touchwiz is much less RAM consuming than Sense is, I wanted to know as a speed purist if Sense bogs down this phone like it has in my previous HTC experience.

Have you flashed any ICS roms on your 3d? If you have you will quickly notice
how much more efficient sense runs on ICS. Now imagine running sense on a much better chip. Hope that answers your question. Case close.

hes right.. sense runs better on ICS for some reason, get the phone

I don't mean to sound harsh, but normally (because tons of people have been incredibly happy with their phones) I would say yes, get the phone, you won't be sorry. However, reading your OP, I get the feeling that if you do get the phone, a week later we'll all be seeing yet another "OMG, sense sux! HTC broke multitasking!!!! This phone lags soooooo much!!!!1!" thread. So my advice to you would be no. You will not be satisfied with this phone.
Go with the GS3 -it has 2GB of ram you know...

I've had mine now for a little under 24 hours, rooted within 1 hour of owning, and have flashed 3 roms so far. I can say I love it, best phone I ever owned, came from EVO og. My wife has the iPhone4s, and though she says she loves her phone she did say she was now jealous of my EVO LTE. I think you should at least get it, run through the paces in the two weeks you have to decide. Then go from there.

[Q] Question about Sense?

I had an HD2 when it first came out. Bought it on a whim. I regretted it about the second day I had it. The phone had SOOOO many glitches, especially with HTC sense. I had to reset it pretty much twice per day. Screen freezes, galore!! So my question is what glitches do you see with HTC sense on this phone? I am pretty interested in getting this phone, especially since verizon has such better coverage in more areas than T-mobile. But I am torn since with my N1 I can still use it as a wifi hotspot for free, tho this reason is probably suited under a different topic. Thanks!

I'm running LPro right now, that's just my fav, but when I was using Sense I didn't have any issues ... not really sure why a lot of people hate it so much ?

i personally love htc sense lol i have no issues as of yet
I have had a DROID Incredible since the summer and haven't had any real issues with HTC Sense. Mind you I was only running the stock ROM for about a week before I was rooted and on a custom ROM... But regardless I haven't had any issues w/ sense.
NO issues with HTC Sense at all.
Thats good to know. I am still a little bit wary of putting a custom ROM onto any phone for fear of bricking the device, but maybe one of these days I will try it out. Maybe more of the glitches came from WinMo 6.5. I remember there were text messaging bugs and media player bugs. If you put too many songs onto the SD card, the voice control feature would crash for some reason.
Can't never Eva compare the hd2 windows running sense than a tb or any android running sense.. way different.. and no. No freezing... Perfect example. I still have my hd2 but now running androind(nand) with sense. ***** runs flawless.

I love sense and I think there is a lot of false hate going on with it. If the ones hating it would give it a try I bet half of them would also love it. With that said, some people think its cool to hate on things, so they jump on the bandwagon.
Sense on the thunderbolt is even beter then the incredible.

[Q] Now that there is root, was Sense really the slowdown?

I read, thread after thread, where people said that SenseUI was a huge slowdown for the benchmarks (Quadrant, NeoMark, etc) and that once the 3VO was rooted, it would be as fast as the Galaxy SII.
Now the root process is out and there are scripts to remove Sense. So, did the phone speed up at all or is the dual core Snapdragon just slow?
I'm past my 30 days, but I have had numerous issues with my phone. I am either going to swap it, or ask to just return it. Since the phone has this many issues, they usually will not care that I am at 33 days.
Anyway, I love HTC phones because of the hacking community, I loved my EVO4G and I like to think that the 3VO will get better with custom ROMs and kernels. But, if removing SenseUI and having root hasn't really improved performance, I may just skip this version and wait for the next EVO.
I don't care if it is as fast as the SGSII. I just want to see a good improvement.

Benchmarks can't measure user experience, they are simply a tool for bragging rights.

I understand that. Yet, that is mostly when you are comparing two different phones. When using just a single phone, they can be a great tool for measuring performance changes.

I can't imagine what you consider fast. In my experience Samsung's phones always fall behind HTC in user experience speed, but do well with 3d acceleration

You go from saying it wasnt as fast.. to saying it had a bunch of issues to saying it wasn't fast enough again.
Do you honestly think the SG2 is going to be even noticeably faster without first watching a video of the 2 phones side by side?
No. I guarantee you wouldn't. But since you see a video of the SG2 loading 100th of a second faster....than gee whiz is this thing an abacus or what!

Even removing a lot of sense stuff all the sense framework is still there. Sense won't fully be removed until there's a cm7/aosp build out, which will take a little while.
Not to mention someone is gonna have a LOT of work to get 3d to work with aosp source.I'm guessing a lot won't care about that(I don't), but some will. I'm gonna start messing around with some.aosp stuff this weekend.
sense or not, rooted or not. This phone is still fast. Faster than my og evo i know that. If i want to appreciate my e3d and its speed, all i need to do is grab my niece phone (my old evo which i gave to her).
You can wait for a senseless rom, but dont forget that sense gives you a lot of convenient apps within. Any rom that i flash will be a sense rom on my e3d.
Wait until there are some custom kernels available for this phone.
I've been hearing that the second core acts more like a failover than a true dual core, where if the first core is maxed, then it can take threads make a difference. I'm sure every custom kernel will make use of it in more of a multithreaded manner, and then you might see some big improvements in both benchmarks and real world use.
Also, I'm eagerly awaiting SBC. On the 4VO with netarchy's SBC kernel, I could get 36 hours out of a charge if I wanted to. On this 4VO, I'm lucky if I get 6 with the same usage pattern.
I'd say the sweet spot for 4VO development came 7 or 8 months after release. It will take some time for the 3VO to get to that level, but it will.
On a side note, now that root is out of the bag, I'd like to personally extend my middle finger in HTC's direction. Shame on you for making it this difficult and opaque. Shame on you for having two faces.
Y does it matter if ur phone is faster than another there is always gonna be a faster phone an Samsung does a great job with the software on there phones it has Hardware acceleration in browser so browser wise it won't be faster an Samsung is just better honestly hardware wise :-/ but yea 3VO is still fast period

The SGSII is only brought into the equation because of the XDA forums. The phone is faster, yes. But, I am not going to get a Samsung phone. I only bring it up because it seems to be the "new benchmark" of phone performance.
My daughter has the Samsung Epic 4G. It has lag in some areas that my EVO4G never had. Although, it can do some serious graphics. So, I agree with you.

Ummm.. No. Reread the OP. I said that I've read that SenseUI was bogging down the phone and that I've read people saying that without it, the EVO3D will be just as fast. I then talk about my issues with the phone, and the options that I have. I then state that I care only to see an improvement in speed.
With my EVO4G, I ran CM7. I am looking at running it again and would like the best phone for CM7. I am not getting a SGSII, but I am looking at the Photon 4G.

Awesome info! Thank you. I don't know much about SenseUI and how deeply it is integrated. I wouldn't mind poking around with some AOSP myself.
I tried getting CM7 downloaded once. I went to the page with the source code and got lost in all of the forks. There were so many different repositories, I didn't know which to look at.
If you can shoot me a PM with some of the locations your pulling, I would be more than happy to give you a hand. I work as a developer, but have been on the same code base for the last 4 years. I've been wanting to play with Android for a while. I work mostly with Java, but I also do a little C and C#.

I do like a lot of the new features, but the weather app FCs on me a lot. I have also had it maxing my CPU quite a bit. I put an app on my phone called Watchdog, and it is alerting me when it gets over 40% now, so I can kill it.
I find that the swipe sensitivity is too high for switching home screens. A quick flick and the screens start spinning. I also get graphical screw-ups on the icons and widgets. I have also had the phone hang up for 30 - 45 seconds (estimated) when leaving an application. I am guessing it has to do with SenseUI refreshing.
I loved SenseUI on my EVO4G. I am not sure I am loving it on the 3VO. I wanted to because there are so many different ways to tweak it now. Although, I did get bored of Sense after a while and liked having all the different download options after moving to CM7.
Maybe there will be an optimized SenseUI ROM that I will like.

Ha! All kidding aside though. You did remind me of one of the features I liked about the EVO3D. It has both aGPS and GPS.
--------------------------------------------------------------
To everyone:
I guess those of you who are HTC fans or Samsung haters want to read more into this than it really is.
It really is simply that I am having issues with my 3VO. I can either return it and get a different phone or get another 3VO. If I get another 3VO, I'm glued to it for the next 11 months. That is, of course, unless they change Premier again.
I am just hoping that the performance improves with the root. Many of you are happy with its performance. I'm not. Maybe the other issues are causing the performance issues. Maybe they aren't. But, if I switch it out for another 3VO, I am stuck with it.
So, I thought I would ask the question in a forum of users, hackers and developers.
One thing I will have to admit, the ROM developers are running at full speed!
Anyway, a quick update. I went to the store and all they would do is reset my phone. This is after I told them I already reset it twice. So, I have to wait a few days and go back. Still having all of my issues.

Just over 2 years old, what are you missing?

I just read an article on goodandevo.net about how the og evo is just over 2 years old now. I'm not sure if this post belongs in the evo 4g section or the lte one, but It pertains to both.
My og evo could do anything, native hotspot, overclock, underclock, roam only, undervolt, virtually anything I asked of it, it could do. Short of printing out money for me to pay my bill, it was all I needed. And thats pretty much what this is about.
I don't know if Its the evo 4g lte itself, or just me, but I'm finding it hard to, I don't want to say like this phone, but I guess its on the line of that or give this phone a chance.
Going from a phone that has had every single thing hacked, any rom you could ever imagine, any kernel, any app, you could dream of... To a phone that still has bugs and issues to be worked out is more of a challenge than I originally even though about.
My only real concern that I had when I got this phone about a month ago was wifi hotspot. I use it as my daily internet source. With my og evo I used open garden for a while, it was the most reliable for me, then I switched to Swagged Out Stock rom and it had the native hotspot and tethering app unlocked.
But now that I'm on the lte, I'm realizing just how much more I depended on that phone. I miss the kernals, the unlimited amount of roms, the different radios I could flash, I bricked my og evo 3 times, sent it into bootloop I can't even count how many times, and even had the screen smashed twice. One of the times I ran it over with my truck after forgetting it under there using it as a flashlight.
I am excited for what the lte holds in store but Im quickly reminded of the "you don't know what you'you've got till it's gone" syndrome.
What are some of the things you guys are missing from your og evos and 3d's?
What are some of the things youre looking forward to with the evo 4g lte?
Sorry for the rant btw.

never had an evo or a 3d but i have had phones of that era. i miss the wifi hotspot and tethering FOR FREE... but then companies decided to get greedy.
I got error 67 a few times on my old evo 4g, then I learned all about rooting, and flashing and especially things like nandroid backups, its killing me when I try to tether on this phone and one minute it will work and the next it won't
Plus my data is always disconnecting, on my og evo, that usually meant it was time to call sprint and have an extension put on my bill because i forgot to pay it.

I don't miss a thing. This phone does what it's supposed to do. ROMS, OC, undervolting...all that falls under the category of wants and things that are nice to have. The difference between the OG EVO and this phone is that right now I can say ROMS and undervolting are wants for this phone...but those are things you need for that phone. That phone stock wasn't all that great. And even with the ROMS and all the dev community has to offer...I'd still stick it out with this phone and be happier with this phone.
These posts...I don't really like them because it makes it seem as if there's something really wrong with what we have now and that's not true. People are just building up these phones and expect so much from them on day one...it's a damn shame. The OG EVO seems godlike now but people were complaining a little while after it came out just like how people are complaining now. People complained about the Epic 4G and then the EVO 3D...SGS II and now this phone and there are probably complaints for the SGS III. Just because ____'s dev scene isn't as big as _____'s...this phone is a disappointment. Do you really think you'd be happier with the OG EVO dev scene? You can try and say yes...but if that were the case, why are there still people complaining?
I'm happier with my non rooted phone now than I ever was when I had my phone rooted on any other device. Back with the OG EVO..so many things were wrong with it that you HAD to flash ROMS if you wanted it to be decent. It wasn't necessarily a luxury...luxury came with choosing a ROM and even then that made me feel even worse because some ROMS had things I did like while others didn't..so I basically in the same boat as not rooting when you think about it (because the custom ROMS had some features stock didn't and vice versa). With this phone now...it does what I NEED it to do. I can put my wants aside because I'm currently happy. Not saying this phone doesn't have its faults and I know people will be quick to bring them up...I would also like to add that that's part of the problem. Should we overlook the flaws? No. But I'm not going to let them ruin my experience. I personally remember what it was like without a smartphone and if my BIGGEST problem with this phone is multitasking...how in the hell can I be upset?
This phone has only been out for a month or two and other than multitasking...I don't see anything wrong but that's because I don't look for anything wrong. Other than multitasking, all my apps work so I'm happy...calls are clear, audio is great, it's all good. Multitasking isn't the only problem I've noticed though...I've also noticed that some games don't work but eh, I can live with that. Now comparing that to the OG E when it came out...this phone is doing A LOT better. I mean sheesh...when the OG came out you could barely use the damn keyboard unless you rooted the phone or waited for the update that came out months later.
So idk...I'm just not understanding these rants. I just don't get them. If that's how we view phones, we'll never be happy. I mean c'mon...if you ONLY got this phone hoping that the dev scene would be just as good as another phone's dev scene on day one...that's a damn shame. If you ONLY got this phone for the dev scene...that's a shame. The fact of the matter is that unless you got this phone for the dev scene, you got this phone because you know that it's going to be BETTER than what you came from. Dev scene aside, if this phone is not better than OG E and you really miss so much from it..just go back to the OG E. If all you care about is the dev scene...go to the Nexus. Simple as that.

I agreeeeeeeeeee!!! The only thing wrong with this phone is the multitasking and ram issue which I think is a ram leak and will definitely be fixed over time. I play around with both my Evo's Og and the LTE and the difference is night and day. I swear I fully charged my Evo og yesterday and took it off the charger and let it sit with only wifi on and played with my LTE evo with close to 80% battery and the Og died while doing nothing. While my LTE was still going strong. Mind you I played airport city, browsed the net, pandora, poweramp, Gtalk, Facebook, streamed some pics and about 30 minutes of a movie to my Xbox 360 from the imediashare app and a phone call and my battery was good. People just nitpick for no reason. Single people do this. Because, they're never satisfied.
I really like this phone. I set roaming to automatic and it does almost as well as my OG did in Sprint only mode. I also don't have to worry about having extra batteries. Rooting was fun too, I got to learn all about the 14 cycles of unbricking.
The slide action keyboard and it's uncanny ability to preclude the addition of any spaces after punctuations and inability to retroactively capitalize, saves a lot of processor power, and letts me get familiar with the space bar. ShapeWriter keyboard which is too small in this huge resolution screen was written years ago, and needed to be replaced, only wish the functionality had been brought in.
Seriously keeping the EVO OG incase I bend this one.
OP I understand where your coming from. Kinda had a feeling like that on the first day with this phone, but then I realized how much HTC finally improved everything from OG. Granted I'm S-Off for the future but I'm still on stock with root, and its amazing that a majority of people are still very happy on it.
If your wanting every type of mod similar to the OG, time is not your friend for now. Give it 8 months to a year for stuff to start changing in that direction. Until then, enjoy what HTC envisioned, because it could be worse!
Totally agree with ms79723.

I understand what youre saying, and I do love this phone, I'm fully just being inpatient, and I know I am. Thats life. I was spoiled with everything I could do by the end of my run with the og evo, that not being able to do as much in terms of flashing is a bumming me out. I didn't flash roms because I needed to, I did it purely for fun, I would read reviews about a new one (and they're still being updated today) and flash it for a couple of days. I would flash multiple kernals a day. And I got used to the luxury of it.
Don't get me wrong, I love this phone, the graphics, the camera, its fast, plenty of storage, and when the ball really gets rolling with this phone, and I mean everything gets working its gonna be astounding. I can't wait.
Sent from my EVO
What I really don't miss about flashing roms is having to restore all my old apps and resync all my email accts, etc. Really don't miss the random reboots from unstable roms or in the later life of the og EVO low memory from trying to run roms too powerful for it.
I really like the EVO LTE. The battery lasts 3x as long as the og EVO did. The screen is beautiful and just as impressive as the og EVO was on day 1. Overall, if the S3 wasn't released within a month of the EVO LTE it would be up there with the og EVO in terms of popularity.
If we had a good 6 months head start on the S3.... Man, I can only speculate.

How awful was the og evo's battery right? Loving my LTE. This phone feels like a big upgrade unlike the EVO 3D.
Sent from my HTC Evo LTE
The new EVO LTE does everything the OG EVO does/did in my opinion and 4x the speed etc. Remember, source was just released, a lot more to come with JB source as well etc.

I just miss the data speed of wimax because 3g in the SF bay area is anywhere from barely ok to holy crap this is slower than my 56k modem. Other than that the phone on the whole is an upgrade across the board. The 2 evos i have are being used as remotes for my living room and bedroom now.
Same here. I had the og evo since it came out and used it until the ltevo came out. The ltevo has been a huge downgrade in real world function despite the far superior hardware nominal specs.
About the only things that are better are more flash so that my apps no longer are out of room, and google wallet is kind of fun to use, and battery life is a little better.
But I had managed to get by with app2sd before and, and google wallet is merely fun to play with, not an actually important function yet. Even the larger screen isn't that bigvof a deal bc tge og evo screen is pretty big already.
Camera doesn't focus right, links to maps and youtube don't open the native app even after rooting and applying the supposed fixes, radio reception sucks, wifi constantly fails to hand off to 3g or other wifi nets when you drive away from one you were connected to, neither the stock nor any other car mode works worth a crap, of course the well known multitasking, I really can't even think of all the unneccesary problems when I try to list them like this because they are so many that I am forced to get good at dealing with them and moving on 30 times a day. It's so many little things that it adds up to a constant, somewhat crappy experience. I wish I could have two phones use the same number because I would actually use my og evo a lot of the time right now rather than fight with this thing. Heck there's another one, writing this post, for some reason it's a lot harder for me to write on this keyboard than the og evo. And why do the arrow keys appear sometimes and not others? I make mistakes a lot and re-word things a lot and I need the arrow keys for editing, but here iin the xda-premium app, no arrows. Other apps they're there. Some things are not necessarily htc's fault but they're still a downgrade from the og. Like the damned lack of menu button, forcing the on-screen button to appear in most apps that were great before, again such as xda-premium.
The phone is cool if you never owned a phone before, but a lot of user experience crossing t's and dotting i's are missing and all in all it's a downgrade from the og.

I agree with this completely. I made the mistake of buying the 3D assuming it would have the same dev support was going to be as legendary as the Evo 4G's (a phone which I never had the chance to own). Needless to say, it constantly made me feel like my phone wasn't good enough, even though software wise there was nothing wrong with it (hardware though, that was a different story).
Now that I have this phone, I've come to appreciate what the stock experience offers. I'm using Flex's optimized stock ROM, and I find myself keeping my current ROM and less interested in flashing things for the sake of flashing them.
I've arrived at a point with Android where I want my phone to be my phone, I don't want to keep wondering "can I push it harder". I'm going to let other people do the testing for me, and when they do, when I'm ready, I'll use the end product and I want to enjoy it.
Afterall, Google Now (whenever we get JB) needs a long time to fully understand your life before it becomes as useful as they say. Can't exactly establish that if I keep switching ROMs

I got better reception with my og evo I think, data connection didnt drop off like it does with this phone.
Again dont get me wrong, I'm.obsessed with this phone, but I'm not a dev, so I'm waiting, hoping, and praying that itbgets the same support the og evo is STILL gettingml.

Hell me get back to Android w/ the DNA....

Hey guys, quick back story. I have been an Android user for several years. I've had phones such as the Incredible, Charge, Thunderbolt. Rezound, Razr Maxx and Galaxy S3. I just recently got rid of my Galaxy S3 for a HTC 8X Windows 8 Phone. I was getting tired of Android and constantly flashing ROM's. I was a flashaholic and had to get myself away lol.
Anyhow, after about a week with the 8X, I really like the phone and OS. However, I'm starting to miss Android. I miss the larger screens and wealth of apps.
Fast forward to today and I'm sitting here considering switching back. And if I do, I'm not getting another GS3 since I've already been there, done that so to speak. My frontrunner is the DNA.
I know nobody can make the decision for me, but I want opinions! Should I switch back, and would this be the phone to get?
I also have a couple questions before I jump back:
1. On my Rezound, homescreen scrolling lag in Sense absolutely killed that phone for me. I can't stand any type of scrolling lag and I'm very sensitive to it. Does that exist on the DNA, or is that a thing of the past? Please be honest.
2. I see that the phone can already be rooted, but does the future look bright in that department?
3. I think I know the answer, but I will throw it in there. For normal, moderate usage, is the battery life acceptable? On par with the GS3?
Thanks guys!
hey man. so yeah launcher lag was bad on rezound. however, in sense 4+, they tightened it up and it's very rigid and never lags.. ever. all 7 of my screens are full of widgets and icons and it's smooth.
battery I tend to get 12 hours with 3 hours screen on time. pretty much the same as my s3.
not sure about rooting yet since I'm still chillin on stock haha

I'll answer #2 the phone seems to have a very talented dev team. Already there are a few Roms and kernels. the future looks bright. As of now I know people are working on Asop and even viper rom.

No lag
Bright future, there are some great devs for this phone already
On par or slightly better.
Sent from my HTC6435LVW using xda app-developers app
No lag whatsoever....period. I came from a thunderbolt and that too would drive me crazy, even with a polished rom and without widgets. I'm not sure if it's Project Butter, Jelly Bean, Sense 4+, 2g of RAM or the insane processor in this thing that makes it run smoothly. Probably a little bit of all of that.
Battery life is good enough for me. I work in and out of 4G area at work but I am on wifi pretty much the rest of the time and it has been awesome. Never charge mid day anymore. Always with 20 to 30 % by the time I go to bed. And the wireless charger is awesome. Highly recommend it. I find myself using youtube more often than I should because of the awesome screen too. I would say I am an average user.
Have not found a reason yet to root. I will wait until it becomes more stable, easier before I go that route. But I'm sure there will be good ROM in the future....at least I hope so.
Ok guys, I'm pretty convinced that I'm gonna give the DNA a shot. One thing I noticed about this HTC 8X Windows Phone is that it locked on satellites really fast. Much, much, much faster than my GS3. It also had better reception than my GS3. Can I expect the same things on the DNA or might that have been a Windows thing?

The s3 just has horrible radios.
Sent from my HTC6435LVW using xda app-developers app
I doubt the development will be here that long. Look at the Thunderbolt. They had to wait for ports.
I've owed many smartphones and used/supported countless others. (including the gs3) The DNA is the first phone that has ever even come close to keeping up with me and the speed at which my brain operates. Zero lag period, regardless of how many apps you have running. I haven't even considered OC'ing and that's usually the first thing I do. The battery is decent and better then most. I typically charge over night and once mid-day. Most other phones I've had to charge 2 - 3 times a day. The dev scene is about average for a phone this new and s-on. Once s-off is achieved I expect it to blow up.
The DNA is the first phone that I've had that wouldn't bother me if there wasn't a big development team behind it. Like you I was/am a flashaholic, but honestly with a couple of Mods I've been golden on this phone. It's snappy, the radios are great (looking at you Samsung) GPS is phenomenal, and battery is pretty much the same as the GS3. Wireless charging is a plus, awesome to just sit it down and let it charge overnight, or on my desk at work.
The phone works great out of the box, only a couple of annoyances for me was the bloat, Wi-Fi reminder, and battery icon, I love everything else. Sense has come a long way since the thunderbolt (last HTC phone I owned). If you had to be stuck with a manufacturer's skin, Sense would be my pick.

What do you mean by that? I got the TB about a week after releases adn there were A LOT of roms being made. What you are talking about is a little bit after the major devs started jumping ship. I think the Thunderbolt had it's fair share of roms
I hope the DNA gets a fully working MIUI; I really like the themes you can get on MIUI
My thunderbolt kept giving me a roaming flashing triangle whenever I ran an MIUI rom which started driving me crazy.

Not so fast?

I've had my DNA since this past Saturday and I went by many reviews and articles saying how fast this phone was. With Sense being on the phone and already going through the lag fest that was the Rezound, I was skeptical.
But I bought it anyway and the hardware and screen are beauties to be seen. Battery life hasn't been amazing but has been acceptable.
Now on to everyday usage and performance. While I'm happy to report that this doesn't have nearly as much ridiculous home screen lag that the Rezound had, but doesn't anyone feel that the home screen scrolling feels heavy? Like I was saying there isn't much lag but the transition scroll from screen to screen just feels slow to me.
I know I have read a lot of people here saying how fast this phone is, but I'm just not feeling it. Coming from my S3 it seems to crawl around in general scrolling compared to it. Just to check, I grabbed my girlfriend's S3 last night right after using my phone for a bit and it seemed like everything was in hyper speed.
I have noticed opening apps speed and in app experiences are fine for the most part. But I'm having a hard time getting over the sluggishness of this UI at the moment.
And look, I'm not looking for a pity party or am doing this to ruffle feathers. I just wanted to post my experiences to see if anyone agrees and to hear other opinions. I am still within my 14 day return/exchange policy, so I want to make sure I leave no stone unturned.
At the end of the day this phone is by no means a slouch. Not trying to say that and it benchmarks crazy well. Just noticed these hiccups and am curious to hear opinions.
Thanks!
Sent from my HTC6435LVW using xda premium
My experience seems to be the opposite of yours actually lol. The SIII feels strange, awkward, and slow while the DNA feels perfectly smooth and snappy. Are you experiencing actual hiccups and lag? Or is it just more of a laggy feeling? It may just be the way the homescreens transition? Not sure.. but everyone I've spoken to with an SIII agreed that my DNA is significantly faster.
This phone kills everything on the s3 except sd and removeable battery.not sure what u did but my homie has the s3 and my phone smoked his ass.sense doesn't feel sluggish to me but that's just me.if u feel that way u could root it and flash a desense Rom

I think it's the sense interface which might make it seem a bit slower than the touchwiz interface. I would definitely keep the phone though .
I appreciate the responses guys, but I will have to respectfully and strongly disagree with the ones who say the DNA is much faster in home screen scrolling. I did a side by side with my gf's S3 and my coworkers Note 2 and they were both much smoother and faster in that department.
Like xShin said, it might just be how the Sense screens transition compared to Touchwiz but I can't say I'm a fan. It's to the point that it may be a deal breaker for me which is a shame since the screen and overall design is really good. Also battery life is starting to not be as good as I thought. The standby/idle battery life is fantastic. I only lose like 2% at night. But now that I'm using the phone more, the screen on time is pretty poor. I can watch it lose 1% every couple minutes.
I'm still not 100% sure that I will get rid of the DNA because there are many things that I love about it. But a few important aspects of it are letting me down at the moment.
Thanks for the responses guys, keep 'em coming!
The s3 on ICS has slight lag compared to s3 on jellybean. Trust me I have had it since launch. Also were getting a OEM 3000mah battery soon that only adds 1-2mm of thickness for an easy 6hr screen time on 4g I can't wait to get it
. I like the DNA but I can't go with the 16gb mine has 32gb and I also have a 64gb card
Sent from my SCH-I535 using xda app-developers app
You could install the same launcher on both phones, and see which one seems quickest?
you want to know why the screen feels heavy? because sense 4+ has finally eliminated home screen lag that sense 4 had. they made it a uniform speed so there's never lag.. and there's not, and i have all 7 of the screens full of widgets. they changed the rosie and animations and it looks much better. The only difference is the s3 has a faster scrolling speed in touch wiz... and touch wiz is crap because e ery time you go back to the home screen, every widget redraws! for having 2 gigs of ram, it sure doesn't seem it. I have an s3 and while it's great, the dna is quicker for the most part, equal in other parts, and overall a better phone.
I've seen your posts dude. If you're unhappy, go return it for an s3..stop trying to justify keeping it with other users who like the device. If YOU don't, get rid of it.

Trust me, I had the S3 since launch as well, and even on ICS the UI didn't feel as heavy as Sense on the DNA. With JB it's even a larger gap.
It's just a shame because I thought they would have learned by now that a phone with monster specs should not have any hesitation in the UI.
I know it doesn't bother most people, but I'm super sensitive to lag and slowness in a UI. And I know most people will tell me just to stop whining and get a different phone. And I get that, it's totally understandable.
I guess I am just venting because this phone has easily the best screen that I have ever seen. And as I said before, I'm not 100% getting rid of it, but I'm leaning that way.
Try a different launcher. Sense default transitions are 'slower' than those that you can have with other launchers.
I noticed this too, it just doesn't bother me. The phone isn't lagging, the transitions are just slower (and meant to be).
Before getting my DNA, I'd been playing around with the Verizon and at&t s3 at work. In addition to the ones I'd handled that I set up for customers, the DNA feels just as fast, if not faster than stock s3. I'd handed it off to a co-worker with a Verizon s3 and he was thoroughly impressed by the performance and ui despite having said he has had discomfort using HTC phones in the past (incredible and thunderbolt).

This. As I mentioned above, to prove to yourself it's not the processing power of the phone that's the problem, but sense animations purposefully being slower, try out a different launcher on both phones. Confident they will be the same speed.
I mean, it's fair to return the phone if you just don't like sense and don't want to mess with third party apps or roms, but don't be fooled into thinking the processing power isn't there.

Thanks!

you want to know why the screen feels heavy? because sense 4+ has finally eliminated home screen lag that sense 4 had. they made it a uniform speed so there's never lag.. and there's not, and i have all 7 of the screens full of widgets. they changed the rosie and animations and it looks much better.

I've seen your posts too, and you've been helpful. Like I said, I'm not trying to ruffle feathers and I'm sorry if I have. And yes, I know I'm whining and all of that. I guess I'm just venting and trying to figure this all out.
You know what, I guess I am trying to justify it and am asking people to nudge me one direction. I know that's dumb, but it's how I work sometimes. And to be perfectly honest, I originally posted this thread and am staying active in it because I really do like this phone. I may end up keeping it after all. I was just a bit disappointed by the slower scrolling speeds, but I assume that I can get used to it like anything else!
I think I will keep monitoring battery life as well, and maybe that will end up being the deciding factor. When I had my S3, I made a vow to myself that I will never get another phone with battery life worse than that. The S3 hit a sweet spot with battery life for me.
And just to let you know, if this phone doesn't end up working out, I won't go back to the S3 but rather get the Note 2 since I already experienced all the S3 had to offer. But hopefully it doesn't come to that!

i hear you, man..it just boils down to the fact that if it's not working for you, gotta get rid of her, ya know? i personally love it, but then again, i also have a galaxy nexus, and a galaxy s3 to use as well. i don't sell my phones haha...i haven't gotten to play with a note 2 yet, but i have no desire to have a phone that big. seems like a giant S3 to me, and since i already have an S3, i'm content with the DNA, ya know?
You definitely need to try a different launcher. Install Nova Launcher, set the animations to very fast and watch it fly.

i dont what this dude is talking about. phone blows s3 away and note II must be on crack to think it is "not so fast"
I agree with the OP. This phone does have a slight lag to it even with another launcher. Its not much but its noticeable. I think whatever phone your coming from deteremines how you like the DNA.
And OP if you looking for a straight answer your not going to get it. Go to any phone section and make a thread like this and the answers will be the same.
Its very unlikely that your mind is playing tricks on you or your phone is defective. Its there but nothing that breaks the phone or usage.
Sense is still heavy for some odd reason and the 2gb of ram helps alot. Cant imagine what its like on older htc products without custom roms and tweaks.
Once development really starts I think all these slight issues will be worked out. I do understand that s3 has had more time to mature than DNA.
One thing the exynos has over snapdragon is media playback. Something this quadcore/2gb ram should be handling easy.
Op why don't you go into developers options and drop your animation scale from 1 to .5. Bet that speeds up your scrolling!
If I helped you in some way.... pass on the favor and help the next person!
I noticed people setting animations to .5 instead of off, what's the reason?
