[Q] What is an mbn file - Streak 5 Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

"The Over-The-Air update packages used by the Dell Streak come encrypted. During the OTA installation process, the Streak downloads the encrypted pkg from the Dell OTA server, reboots into recovery mode, decrypts the update pkg, then finally applies the update. The decrypted update zip is similar to standard Android update zips. After the update process, the decrypted pkg is left on the root of the SD card."
These are instructions from the updates page. The problem is that they don't go into enough detail. Downloading from the link gets me an mbn file, which I have never heard of. What do I do with it? Do I need a utility to extract it so I can then put it on the phone or do I put it on the phone as is? If the phone is not "rooted", where should it go?
I ask because my phone is 1.6 from AT&T and checking for updates tells me that it is up to date so this appears to be my only option.

Those aren't the instructions from the updates page, they are from the XDA wiki page
To download an update pkg form that page click on the number of the package in the first column or the text PKG in the fourth column.
You will get more coherent help if you don't start multiple threads.

I don't have a clue what a "Wiki page" is. Going back and looking, the word shows up once on the entire page as a link to "Wiki Admins".
The page is a list of available updates. To me, that's an update page.
The other thread pointed me to that page, which brought up a whole new question that I thought other newbs might like to know the answer to as well.
A question/answer they might not see if it is buried in one more "how do I update" thread, so I gave it its own thread so it stood out better.
Meanwhile, I still don't know for sure what an mbn file is. All I can find is that it is some kind of compressed file, sort of like a .bin but that doesn't tell me what to do with it.

That's straight off the wiki page like he said, i know seeing as i'm the one that wrote that line. If you scrolled down it's written in the ROMs section
mbn files are the device firmwares of snapdragon type processors/chipsets, most users dont need to deal with these
if you want to update there are dozens of threads on the general section sub-forum

Some general noob questions Sprint 6800

For the last 4-5 days I've been flooding the grey matter with the plethera of info from the site
I've searched (and read) and searched some more on several things that I just can't seem to find a "direct" answer to. If these questions have been answered in another post, please forgive me as I may have missed it in the 30-some IE windows I have open at any given time...
My questions are specfic to Sprint (I think):
Preface: I took the offical "stock" Sprint package and deconstructed it in order to remove the junk that I didn't want and use it as a base.
1) What EXACTLY is PPST.exe? I read that some say it is a must for Sprint users while others say it is not but no where have I found EXACTLY what it is. In the stock package I see PPST.EXE and ___PPPST.cab.
2) After deconstructing RUU_signed.nbh, I found some files that I can't seem to find explaination of... Unknown.nb, ExtROM.nb and OS.nb.extra
3) Do I need to include ExtROM.nb when I run NBHGEN.exe?
4) I think I read somewhere that I have to do something with OS.nb.extra when creating OS.nbh but for the life of me I can not find the thread.
5) Boot.rgu - I read that I need to extract this from the original ROM. I used XIP extractor (as suggested in the thread I read) but all it does is give me an XIP file (which I have no idea what to do with). I read threads on XIP but it seems like the newer tools already have this step baked in? In any event, how the heck do I extract Boot.rgu?
6) Lastly, I patched together what info I could and did what I believed to be the correct steps and have sucessfuly been able to build a custom ROM and flash with it. The ONLY problem I seem to be having is that when I go to Settings-->Phone to change ringers, it will not let me exit. I tap the 'x' and nothing. I have to tap Start-->Today and when I go back, my changes have not been saved.
-EDIT-
For #6 above, I believe the problem is with the Ring Tone setting. By pressing "x", the Ring Tone keep switching back to its default tone. If I tap Start-->Today to exit, all the setting will save correctly EXCEPT Ring Tone. Also, if I use Sounds and Notifications, same symptom. Everything saves correctly but the screen simply switches back to the the default Ring Tone and will not save or exit.
-EDIT-
For #4 above, I figured out what to do with OS.nb.extra. Lack of sleep had me mis-reading some instructions.
-EDIT-
For #3 above, I downloaded TFAT_Image_Editor and looked inside the ExtraROM.nb -- everyting makes A LOT more sense now about the file. Great tool for editing the ExtraROM.nb file!
HELP!
TIA!

Update 7.0.7008.0 is out!

Hello guys,
just to inform you that an update is available....
It is not yet flashable to our HD2 (error code - wrong registry) but I am sure the cooks will be able to fix it in no time.
According to Microsoft Windows Phone blog, this update will enhance the updating experience for future update, without giving much details.
What’s in this update?
This first update for Windows Phone is designed to improve the software update process itself. So while it might not sound exciting, it’s still important because it’s paving the way for all future goodie-filled updates to your phone, such as copy and paste or improved Marketplace search.
In the future, I encourage you to check out our new update history page on the Windows Phone website for a brief, plain-English summary of what each update does or what features it adds to your phone.
hmmmm...any idea what that update is for??any news??and is it safe to flash on our hd2??

i tried to update my HD2, but at last i got error!! somthing with backup!
Well at least Xboxmod and the rest of the Devs will now be able to cook up this new update.
So folks you will just have to wait until its done, as you cannot update unless you have a real HD7 phone.

mmmmm i think the clue is in post # 1 ? or maybe you dont bother to read!!!!
You cannot update a LEO70. Only a real HD7 phone.... So flash to your hearts content.
You are all going to have to wait until the Dev's do an update to the LEO7 roms etc etc.
Are these better updates automatic? If so, would they break a custom rom on HD2?
This is just an update to update the updater... Seriously.
I tried and has been well documented. update fails but did no damage to my rom... so, no harm no foul...
I actually hesistated to even update the Zune software... let alone try to update my HD2. I thought MS may block us out some how.

I have done both, the phone restarted a couple of times and then said it could not be updated because of a registry error. Of course, it couldn't but I was foolish enough to try.
After the update failure everything was back to what it was (nothing changed) and, YES, I could still access the marketplace. I think if MS wanted to block us they could have done it already, probably through our IMEI.
I mean the update process was started 'cause it 'saw' the phone as HD7, it even created a back up, downloaded new files and then it stopped and returned everything to its original state.
I think there is no problem with 'detecting'.
Update on the update...
I'm not sure if this is the right place but does this mean an update is available to change my i-Phone to WP7???
Jokes,
Seriously, on the phone update, zune gives an error code
"80180089", and a message that it cannot update
"because your phone registry settings are incorrect"...
DFT, XBoxMod and all the rest of you brilliant chefs out there, does this mean we can update with a few minor (or major) registry changes or does it need a proper cooking??
Edit:
Just searched and found this on the WP7 Pre-update update to allow a better update experience
http://www.pocket-lint.com/news/38712/samsung-omnia-7-broken-update
it seems it may have fncked your phone if you had been able to update, so we're all winners here!!
The update seems to be for hd7 only, I have a Mozart aswell as HD2 and no update is available for that.

I met with MS Mobile reps last week, they confirmed that copy/paste will be in the next big update but nothing about tethering. When I asked specifically they said the ability to do this is there, some phones I guess you have an option by entering a code at startup. ??? They sais this is more of a carrier thing. I think that means carriers don't want it as it cuts down on their data card sales.

[Q] List of rules to install generic .APK file?

Ok, I've side-loaded a generic .APK file, into a sub-dir within the 1.0-GB
area. (Previously, I likewise side-loaded a movie file into this same area, and it plays great.)
As I read other posts asking this same type of question about procedures/rules
for installing side-loaded apps, I'm not yet clear on a few things, such as
whether I need to be 'rooted' to install them and whether I first need to
purchase/install separate SD-card and load such generic apps there instead.
My current state is:
(1) My Nook tablet is still at 1.4.0 (i.e. I have NOT yet received the 1.4.1
update that blocks installation of such APKs.)
(2) My NT is NOT yet rooted.
When I view/select the side-loaded generic app, see a red question-mark on the file, and tappin it, I get msg:
"This nook cannot read this file. It may be an unsupported format."
So, what should I try next, to allow this file-type of .APK to be
a supported type?
Is this your first non-B&N apk? If so, I believe you have to download and install at least one apk directly through the Tablet's browser to get the option changed to allow sideloaded apks.

Well, it WAS my first non-B/N app.
So, I installed an app, one named 'Skitch', from the BN app store.
But, that makes no difference at all...my original side-loaded APK file
still gives the same error msg that I mentioned in the base post.
So, your 'belief' seems to be incorrect.
Anyone else know what to do, to install side-loaded .APK files?
[This issue could end up being one more nail in the coffin...if I don't resolve this,
I'll have to strongly consider returning this device, and waiting for a 'true' Android
tablet this spring, with newer, more main-stream code (e.g. 'Ice Cream Sandwich')
in it.]
Hi cookdav,
CapsLockKey is correct about needing to download an apk through the browser in order to do what you would like.
I noticed this yesterday after playing with my NT for the first time. When you download an apk through the browser you will see a notification in the lower left hand corner that it is complete. You have to launch the apk from this notification in order for the file to be correctly recognized.
When I went to my downloaded files and tried clicking the apk file I got the same message you are seeing. It seems to me that the BN overlay does not natively recognize the apk file format, but the code responsible for the notifications does.
You should then be able to follow the directions for enabling ADB. After that you can use adb to install any apk file you would like.
I hope this helps and that it was clear.

What does installing an app from the B&N app store have to do with side loading an app from the browser or email? Have you bothered to read the "how to side load apps thread?"
How you can fix your face to say "your 'belief' seems to be incorrect." when you aren't following instructions is funny as hell.

The operative word there is 'seems'.
And, yes, I did read that thread, but obviously now, I missed something.
I guess I missed the distinction, between installing an app via 'shop'
and installing an app via the browser. So, shoot me.
[That said, I'm still a bit confused. But, reading-between-the-lines has always
been problematic for some of us newbies.
I'll go back and re-read everything 3 times again,
and I'm sure that these distinctions will eventually become clear to me.]
Thanks for clarifying.
Ok, did one thru the browser, but still no-go...
Ok. I installed 'golauncher', via the browser.
Sigh. But, once again, after that, when I go back and try to install
the earlier-mentioned .APK, it still says what it has been saying all along.
Hmm..a new possibility has occurred to me: Maybe I'm so immersed in
Linux and Windows-XP and Win-7, that that has made me too stupid
to follow directions and learn this new 'tablet-way' of doing things.
[Whoever said "The devil is in the details" must have been an Android user.]
Clearly, I've STILL missed something, after re-reading. Anyone got
any more ideas/guesses of what I might still be missing?
"this nook cannot read this file" although I do sideload apks
I got a similar problem with Nook Tablet wit 1.4.0
I have managed to download an app so that my settings have been changed to accept those apps
If i go to another app market, I do install apps.
But for some reason I am limited (Amazon Apps refuses to work because I am not in the US and others have limitations which I dont understand, as on a chinese android pc they work, however)
SO I d like to install from sd card
And i get this message "this nook cannot read this file"
If I mail to gmail, in nook mail I cant open attachment (nor any others)
Any workaround?
Thanks
Agnes

I don't think you can install apk's through the native file browser. You will need a different file browser to install your apk's.
if you are downloading directly from the internet browser, then the installation process is the same as installing the tgps launcher or in your case go launcher.
However, if you are sideloading your apk's through something like dropbox or an sd card, you will need a file browser.
I recommend Root Explorer (paid), but if you need a free one you can download es file explorer.
es file explorer can be found in the must have apps thread located in the themes and apps section of the NT forums. Just go to that page on your NT internet browser and click the download link. You will be redirected to a download page, and there should be something that says "remove this frame". Tap on that and your download should start.
hope this helps

got all the way to step 7 of method two from this http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2432476 and ran UpTestEX_mod2_marwin only to get a pop up please update R&D test tools".
I know the regular LG R&D doesn't let me revert from kitkat (have tried 5 times), so does anyone know where I can actually get a current R&D mod. Have googled every way I could think of and as I started trying to get this T-Mobile LG G2 re-rooted 14 hours ago, I'm burnt and really need some help.

did you reed instructions in the file?
does the script complete.
anyways reboot, add manually the url to hostfile
:\windows\system32\drivers\etc\host
save without txt extension (as all files).
follow instructions again, then it should launch
after manually remove line from hosts again.
that worked for me
also firwall should allow https file that virusscanner may mark as virus.

I really hate when people scold people about being in the right forum when they actual are.
I've posted a general G2 question in the General G2 forum.
And this question had nothing to do with the LGMOBILEAX file (which I already substituted). It was about the LG R&D not working on an LG G2 which I posted in the LG forum.

Zebra/Symbol/Motorola TC70 Factory Reset

I recently bought a Zebra/Symbol/Motorola TC70 on eBay that is apparently from a Walmart and is seemingly locked down with a custom firmware. I did find firmware files and flashing instructions on Zebra's website. You are supposed to boot into recovery and flash the main image and then afterwards you flash one of two smaller zip files. One is designated as Factor Reset and one is Enterprise Reset. In the description of these files, the Factory Reset says its wipes all partitions and data including the Enterprise folder/partition and the Enterprise Reset does everything but that folder/partition. Zebra seems allow me to download everything but the Factory Reset file which is the one I assume I need to remove the Walmart branded stuff.
My question is, is it possible to manually wipe this partition and gain the same effect as the Factor Reset file? Bad idea maybe?
Any help would be appreciated
Installation instructions can be found here: https://www.zebra.com/content/dam/z...date Loader Image - Non-GMS Release Notes.pdf
TC70 Locked Down
Did you get any joy in downloading the software for the TC. I have one too thats locked down to a custom firms software that and the Zebra site wont allow me to download due to registration of the device being with someone else
Another TC70 here in need of an enterprise reset. I have no idea of its provenance so can't access the stuff on the Zebra website.
Going the whole hog, a non-enterprise reset would be even better and a KitKat GMR ROM image as well would be REALLY welcome!!.
Thanks for any help
After a lot of trying to get the enterprise reset out of Zebra I had no joy. These are simply locked up so tight that once the purchaser has registered the unit only they can gain software for them. Its a pretty good good for the purchaser as they know if one of there handsets go missing no one else can use it so it should deter theft of these expensive handsets but its unfortunate for people who legitimately buy a second hand unit. I had submitted the purchase invoice to Zebra showing the unit had been legally obtained but since it was still registered to another company they couldn't help me. There seems to be a lot of Royal Mail / Parcel Force handsets floating around... avoid them as you will never get it to work. One things for sure Zebra are no way as near helpful as Motorola used to be.
Hope I can help you guys out a little on this one....
Got access to all roms, etc from the Zebra web site and can get anything they offer as far as factory resets (enterprise and otherwise), roms and manuals. I am uploading the ones I already have downloaded for KitKat, Lollipop and MM. If you don't see what you need when I post the links (hopefully here shortly), PM me and I'll download it from the website for ya.
Stay tuned...
*EDIT*
Here is a link to my Dropbox folder with the files for the TC70. The other files I already have and full firmwares are still uploading (due to only having DSL access where I'm at it's going to take a few hours). Check the unit you have and the Zebra website to confirm versions needed, but I believe the latest two versions of the enterprise reset files are up and ready to download.
Again, PM me for specific versions needed.
*EDIT#2*
Link to the thread I started where you can discuss and request specific versions of firmware for your TC70/TC75 or any other Motorola/Symbol/Zebra device firmware.

Again, PM me for specific versions needed.

can you help me thx
Request
Hi,
I just found this thread trough Google.
And i was wondering if you could still access the files on the Motorola site.
Because file: T70N0LXXVRGEF21002.zip is the latest, but is missing the GMS certification.
something i think is needed/handy for using the Google Playstore on updates.
Or if anyone knows where i can get the updates, please let me know.
Edit: the correct 'GMS enabled' firmware should be: T70N0LXXARGEF21002.zip,
and it seems to need update file: 'T70N0L50ARPEF21002.zip'
and Lifeguard? updates?
new info

Hi,
I have bought an usb/charge cable for the TC70.
and it actually charges also without an adapter attached to it.
but on-topic,
I also see its 'protected' with Soti.
And i was wondering if you have an Factory Wipe image.
Because when i applied the Full Software Update, It forces the install of the Soti protection also,
rendering it kinda unusable.
But you can get more acces tough the on/off button in terms of connectivity, light settings.
The way to reset these is to put the reset *.zip file on the micro sd card, turn the device off, then hold down the lower button on the left hand side marked with a yellow stripe while holding the power key. It will boot into recovery, select install update from external sd card using the volume keys, then use the top left side button to select the zip. I have a TC70 wifi version and I need the latest update T70N0LXXARGEF21002.zip which you just cannot find or get anywhere. Everything works fine on mine except wifi, I need the wifi config .bin file I believe. PLEASE PLEASE PLEASE if anyone has these files or has access to them can they download them and upload to a file sharing please.

To get the system image, you need to contact the Motorola support, as stated on the support site:" Please help . Thank you!

I cannot find these files ANYWHERE without being asked questions by symbol, most of these scanner come from supermarkets and are ex contract but are still tied in zebras database to a contract so they will not release the files to you under any circumstance. This is really frustrating, the original guy bobtsunam who provided the dropbox folder has not been online since august so I think we are screwed.
Dear me, I am in a massive discussion with zebra/symbol support trying to get this file, they suggested I download it, I told them I couldnt, they now want the unit sent in to them.......this is going to be a long thread over a zip file....

I'm not sure if this helps or is known but just in case its not , so messing around with the tc70 i found myself in setting and was able to view apps, create lockscreen , access camera ,view pictures etc... and actually delete/disable apps, I was able to disable EHS and any other app installed. In my excitement I accidentally deleted a wrong folder which caused tc70 to freeze on boot screen lol. long story short I would like to see what others may add to this glitch so if anyone is interested in this process LMK
Does anyone know if it is even possible to disable Walmart setup app from tc70 settings and if so anyone know of what app I need to disable/delete? As I said I can access settings and many other areas of device .. will pictures of the apps it has help ?
i have reset file for tc700
i need the other os files...the reset locks up bootloader with password but ill share if need be hmu

I'm actually looking for the walmart roms, as my co-worker bought a used TC70 that has been flashed for Home Depot, and wants to use it for Wal-Mart.
