I'm waiting for my tablet to ship and I've been reading up on all the ROMs. I'm impressed with the DEV's on these forums and it's making it hard to pick what ROM to use. (I know, I can test a few, but that's not the point of this post)
So, What ROM to you use as your "daily driver" and why?
How stable would to rate it (out of 10)?
How compatible would to rate it (out of 10)?
No one is willing to post what their daily ROM is?
Daily Rom
My daily rom is GAdam...it is Very stable...I have full Market. Now the default Adam interface is a bit wonky for my tastes. BUT install another launcher and the rom flies!! I've had no crashes, no fc's...just all around a great rom for GTablet imo
VEGAn beta 5.1.1 is my daily driver. I have tried out all but Gadam and always end up back at this one. Its very stable, but most roms for Gtab are once you use cwm to fix permissions. I love the soft keys on the status bar so no matter what way I hold my Gtab I can navigate about.
I'm waiting for VEGAn Ginger to progress a little further and I will switch there. Still some bugs to work out, I use it a lot but when its time for business I flash back to beta 5.1.1.
VEGAn beta 5.1.1
Stability: 10
Compatibility: 10
Functionality: 10
SPEED: 9
I love robeets work with TnT Lite, to me its only a few small UI things that make the decision on VEGAn.
VEGAn 5.1.1, very stable but as mentioned....most of them are. Some listed as "experimental" or such I would be more cautious of but the others......pick your poison.
I've been using Vegan 7 for about two weeks now and it's great. Stability: 8. Compatibility: 6. That 6 rating is only that low because of the lack of video support. 95% of apps work, with one rare exception being Quadrant Standard. Quadrant will run it's tests, but when it comes to reporting to their server and posting the scores, the app errors out and no results are posted. Oh, and the missing apps thing. Waiting with bait on my breath for the first Beta release.
VEGAn beta 5.1.1
It's fast, stable, and lightweight.
It was Vegan 5.X for a long time, which was (and is) fast and stable, but lately it's been gADAM, which feels similarly responsive. Like one of the posters above, I'm also not that big a fan of the native Adam launcher, and use ADB instead.
Vegan 5.1 (.1?) on mine, I tried TnT's new rom, the TNT supp add on 1.4.5, Vegan-Ginger and came back to 5.1 Vegan.
The reason Ginger gave me to many issues with My Apps despite my tries to fix it, and I have my Froyo (Vegan 5.1) setup well, though I really miss the text selection options on 2.3
I will be moving to Vegan-Ginger as soon as it gets a little more stable with a few things.
vegan gingeradition
I use vegan 7 I give it a 8 or 9 all around
Vegan 5.1.1 plus Clemsys version 6 kernel.
Functionality and ability to personalize is huge for me. I havent tried every available ROM to date, but the ones I have tried (gAdam 1.2, Vegan5.1.1, TnT 4.25/5.0, Vegan Ginger Experimental) Vegan Ginger hands down, atleast for me, has the most options. Took me the better part of a day to fully get through all the options available and I was in heaven!
Currently, I fell back to the TnT Lite 4.25, only cuz I dont have the time to tinker with classes. Plan on going back to Vegan Ginger once in Beta (or when I have the time).
Not wanting to spend too much time with care and feeding and hoping to be in the upgrade path if Viewsonic ever gets their act together, I like the stock enhancement with full market that is posted on this site. I have had zero problems after repartitioning and then going to the enhancement.
I guess I'm not very adventurous.
This is a great thread for all of us coming from the Woot! buy. Keep posting and please be as specific as possible. Thank You!

I find it interesting that almost all posters here are from Vegan user. Not even one report form a user who only uses TNT 4.xx or 5.xx.
TNT Lite 4.3.2 here. I've had no issues whatsoever w/ TNT Lite from version 3.1.2 until now. I even installed the very experimental 5.01 which I had issues backing out of, but I knew going into it that I was diving into uncharted waters.
I like TNT Lite because it's built over the crippled pre-installed OS w/ heavy modifications making it much more complete and also more fo a android experience.
Stability: 9 (I flash frequently; could count all issues on one hand from all versions installed; 3 specifically all of which were addressed in newer versions)
Compatibility: 10
Speed: 10
Vegan 5.1.1. With clemsyn kernel. I use this for work so I need the stability, and this thing is more reliable than my laptop. Suggest adw launcher and dolphin browser, as they make the experience much better. I plan to migrate to 7 once it is beta.
I'm on TnT lite 5.
A thread for Vegan (that I read) described it as very good/very stable/"not totally falling in love with appearance". Appearance means something to me. I kept reading.
The TnT dev thread also described it in the same terms *except* for appearance. It looks like stock Android.
It is *very* stable: no crashes. Period.
Having said that, I have only had this tablet since early March.
Regards,
Dan
Not to hijack this thread but just how bad is the stock Rom that ships on the Woot tablets? I don't have mine yet. I'm not scared of flashing a custom Rom as I've been doing it on my phones for a few years. Are people flashing just for the sake of flashing or is the current shipped Rom that unusable?
ROM
Vegan 5.11, used it and haven't regretted it.

There are some Honeycomb ROMs for our Device, but why they all are based on HC 3.0.1? Is there any special reason for not releasing a ROM based on 3.1 or even 3.2?

Because HC development for our devices was begun by the Tabletroms crew, and they began using 3.0, because it was available at the time. Remember, the HC that non-Google supported devices use can't just perform and OTA to get it updated. These roms are pretty much built from scratch. If you spent 2 months working on a Rom, then a new version comes out, are you just going to scrap everything you've already done, and start over again with the new version? Hell, we're not even supposed to have HC working on the Gtablet, are we really becoming THAT greedy that we already want updates?
By all means, go ahead and find yourself a source for 3.2, port it over to the Gtablet and run with it...When can we expect it?
"Greed is good, greed is right, greed works"
Sure it cost some efforts to make them run, but I thought if 3.0.1 is running most issues are solved and 3.1 just need some adjustments.

if you think about it though, even with 3.1 or 3.2, we still wouldn't have a working camera, or hardware acceleration, so, it would still be broken.
We don't have camera, because the sources ours are ported from are from a device that doesn't have a camera.
While the Tansformer, Xoom, and Iconia all have Tegra 2s, they are different versions than the Vega, Gtablet, and Adam.
Yeah what a big loss, that crappy 1,3MP cam. Maybe i'll give it a try later.
I just got my GT 7.0 Plus for Christmas and absolutely love it. I really like the compact 7" design and it will fit my needs perfectly. Now that my wife has played with it, she wants one too, but bigger. She is considering the 8.9" or 10". Since they are both the same price right now, she is leaning towards the 10".
What are the differences between the 3 tabs? From what I can tell the 10.1 and 8.9 are a little older and have Android 3.1 while my 7.0+ has 3.2. How much difference is there in the 2 OS versions?
I also see that my 7.0+ has the Samsung Exynos™ 2x1.2GHz processor. What is in the 8.9 and 10.1? Is it dual core?
Any other differences worth mentioning?
Keep in mind this is for my wife and she will not be rooting or modding it... She just needs something that is stable and just works.
I realise that this is a Gtab forum and I might possible get flamed for this, but here I go anyway
If your wife wants something that will be stable and will just work, without any tinkering or rooting or anything, and if she wants the tablet mostly for watching video, surfing the net, checking mail, playing some games etc. I'd recommend an iPad over the Gtab.
Why?
I'm absolutely in love with my Galaxy Tab, but I took the time to learn about it and tweak it. Hell, I scout these forums whenever I can to find some new tricks or tweaks. After it's tweaked, I'd never change it for an iPad, but if you're staying at stock, right now iPad is much smoother and overall a much better user experience - this may change in a few months when the official ICS comes out, but we can't be sure about that yet.
Why is she so averse against moding or rooting it? It's easy to learn and it can make the tab a whole different experience then remaining at official stock. Even if you don't want the "unstable" custom ROM (I'm writing in parenthesis since I haven't seen an unstable custom ROM here yet), you could go for a newer version of stock ROMs, or for CM9 when it comes out, those will most probably be as stable as the official stock, but still be faster/better then the one you get from Samsung if you wait for the official update.
There is practically no danger in rooting and moding your tablet, if you read the instructions and don't mess with stuff you don't understand, and there are many good guides around. And if you don't like it, you can still return everything back to the way it was through backups, no harm done.
As for the difference between devices, there are many reviews explaining just that around, google them
Heres one for technical specs, detailing differences between different tabs and galaxy note: http://socialcompare.com/en/comparison/samsung-galaxy-tab-10-1-vs-8-9-vs-7-inch
[Edit] You can also move the list items around or add extra items to the comparison list in the link, if you want to compare your 8.9 to any other devices.
She is not averse to modding or rooting, but if it's not a stable release it causes more problems for me. She got her Infuse 4G right after it came out and I flashed a couple of not so stable roms and she hated them. It's fine now since the talented devs have released new stuff, but I have my own tablet and droid phone to keep running smooth, so I don't want to have to worry about hers too. As long as the stock rom will make her happy, I will leave it at that. But if there are roms that would make it better, she won't mind me modding it, so long as they are stable roms (which sounds like that won't be an issue).
One of the things she liked about mine was the screen shot button. I assume that's also there on the 8.9 and 10.1?
And the iPad is out. I absolutely hate Apple products (mostly due to iTunes) and will never own another one. We both had iPhones and neither one of us would ever go back. I have her trained to hate Apple as well.

Haha, I have the feeling that we'd get along well
If the only problem keeping her from modding is stable releases, then there's no problem at all .
Yes, the screenshot button is part of HC's standard and every ROM I've seen till now has it (heard there is a way to disable it though, but I like it there ).
Are you thinking about the Wi-Fi only (7510) or about the 3G (7500) tablet? The 7500 is a bit more limited when it comes to different ROMs, as there are only 3 floating around right now, CM9 is currently being made for 7510 etc.
The 3G roms are Overcome, Ganbarou and BinDroid. I've tried BinDroid and Overcome (stayed on Overcome because the theme on BinDroid started to seem a bit too intrusive for my tasted after a few days) and they were both really stable. I don't think I've ever had any problems with any of them (I might have gotten a FC here and there, but nothing that I'd remember, nothing in the last week or so, and definitely nothing I couldn't have gotten on stock ROM).
For 7510, everyone recommends Task650's Galaxy Task, but I can't speak from personal experience as I need my tabs 3G connection. Some are saying that v8 is better then v9 or v10, but you should look in that thread or ask someone else to make sure.
As for the kernel, Pershoot's OC kernel is the undisputed champion - it allows you to OC, push extra modules (NTFS for instance) and stuff like that.
The Overcome experience also has a really nice guide to follow if you want to make sure you don't do something wrong (though it sounds like you know what you're doing), or if you want your wife to learn how to flash her tablet herself
I'll be getting the WiFi version only. She has an AT&T 4G phone and I have a Verizon 4GLTE phone and both have tethering enabled. So between the two of us, we almost always have a fast connection when away from WiFi. It sounds like either of the larger tablets would be a good fit for her. We might go to BB this evening so she can play with both before I order one.
The Task650 Rom looks pretty nice. Might have to flash that one for her to try.
Thanks for all the help guys!
10.1 and 8.9 are similar
Its just about the size
I have a 10.1 stock with ADWlauncher Ex and everything is smooth and stable.
A good point to consider would also be the available ROMs/tweaks/developers/accessories. I myself like the big screen, so I wouldn't go for the 8.9, even though that one is easier to handle with one hand only (you can actually hold it on one side, while I usually hold my tab in the middle with one hand, similar to how I would hold an open book).
Some places also offer testing devices, so maybe you could get one of those for a few days to see which one suits your needs better?

I think later on will be also with 7.7.. CMIIW..
I have the wifi tab, but after rooting and installing Task with the pershoot kernel, I also added the adhoc tethering hack and can now use my tab with my phone....
Best of both worlds without another data plan issue.
I went ahead and ordered the 10.1, should be here this week. And I have wifi tethering enabled on both of our phones, so the wifi version works just fine. Thanks for all the input!

Awesome and a great choice. I've tried both In Paris V5 and GalaxyTask V10 on my GTab (2nd one mind you...sold my 1st one like an idiot and it was a 32 gig but now I'm back with a 16gig)
I've been looking for a good tab to get the gf around vday and I keep coming back to wanting to get her the Gtab.
Numerous stable roms, good support, lots of accessories, and ICS/CM9 right around the corner.
I think you and your wife will be very happy with it. Either of Galaxy/Phantom's ROMs are about as stable as you can get, just depends on if you want 3.1 or 3.2. With 3.2 Galaxytask you can flash b00sted's ICS theme, which is a very nice simplistic theme.
ETA: As for cases, I used the Gumdrop cases. Otterbox doesn't make any for the 10.1 and have no plans to, (which to me is stupid) but with that said, my Gumdrop cases have been on par or better than any Otterbox defender cases I have tried for other gadgets. Like the Defender cases, they do add a bit of size and weight but honestly I feel so much more confident in the robust nature of the tab with their cases on. Now if I could just find a car dock that would work with the case.
So I took the plunge and bought my self a Gtab, not too keen on blowing ridiculous amounts of money on tech, so for the specs and price tag the Gtab seemed to be the best bet.
Now I am fairly comfortable flashing Roms, I just would like some input from the community.
So whats the most functional and stable rom available currently?
CM7 has always been my go to first base rom for pretty much any phone I have flashed, but I dont quite like it on my Nook Color, its fairly buggy, but I blame the nook not CM7
but Hardware Acceleration sounds nice, and I know that none of the Comb roms have it, but neither do the GB Roms either right?
Looks like Clemsyns V8 is probably the best 2.2 rom out, but how is it in terms of functionality and compatibility with newer 3d games and other applications?
any other input would be greatly appreciated, I just figured I ask before I go on a flash spree, because it usually takes me a couple weeks of flashing this and flashing that before I settle on a rom and I didnt really want to drag this out that long. I just wanna flash, and use until ICS Stable Rom is released.
FrankenTab and Beastly ROMs are FroYo based and should have hardware acceleration, camera and video support. Plus, they are actively being updated. They aren't Honeycomb, and I still prefer VeganTAB 7.1 (even without hardware acceleration), but the FroYo ROMs will pretty much have everything working until a stable ICS version hits.
Sent from my gTablet using Tapatalk.
I've tried most of them at some point I guess it matters what you are willing to sacrifice. I love the look and feel of Flashback but no hardware acceleration, no camera, more ram used by the system ... (all Honeycomb roms are like that).
CM7 works great and I keep one gtab on it. MX Player has Tegra 2 software acceleration for video and most games and apps work. Has been very stable for 4 months, not buggy at all and looks great.
My other gtablet has landed on Beasty-Clemsyn. It is a Froyo rom, very stable and very fast with full hardware acceleration. I ended up here because everything just works like it is supposed to. Installed the new market, flashplayer, new version of VTL launcher and I really like it. It will hold me over till an ICS rom comes out.
FrankenTab and Beastly
I've been switching between FrankenTab and Beastly myself.
I think FrankenTab looks nicer overall but I've run across less issues with the Beastly rom and so I've settled with that until ICS is released for our G Tab.
Let us know which roms you try and your experience with them.
I am pleased that my FrankenTAB ROM has found its way over to XDA.
I would love to hear any issues users are having since we are actively developing this ROM (currently working on v1.0.2), but I cant help over here yet with an official support thread. If anyone needs help, you can PM me here, or google FrankenTAB and look for the original and most active thread for it on the site that starts with an "S".
Franken Tab is a great rom, I also went through allot of flashing trying different roms, soon the ICS ROM will be around and I am using the pre-alpha so what ever you decide set up for 1.2Bl and the latest CWM touch version. its coming n its cool.
Yup FrankenTab is the first rom I have flashed on this thing, and I am liking it so far.
-great wifi integrity
-fast as hell
-and the included VTL launcher is nice too.
plus having the ability speak with the Dev directly about suggestions and bugs is very nice as well.
If you want Flash to work well are you limited to 2.2 ROMs?

Flash works fine in 2.2 and 2.3 based ROMs. I have it working just fine in VeganTab GE 7.1.
From what I understand, it works (with caveats and quirks) in Honeycomb, and only with certain versions of Flash.
Sadly after messing with Franken and Beastly, I found my self at CM7s door.
Franken had me really really excited at first, it was fast, it was responsive, I only had it set at 1.33ghz, but there were a few issues with both that I found a bit to unstable for my taste.
Will see how CM7 holds me over.
I love 1.09 frankentab. It performs better then anything I have tried but is way behind brilliant corners in bench mark tests. I can't figure that out because it's seems 5 times faster in real life.

Hello,
I have had my Gtablet for about a year, and I have tried many roms.
FY,GB,HC,ICS,etc. Various incarnations. (Well, only 1 ICS)
From my understanding, Viewsonic, like many companies,
uses various suppliers for components, so the individual results with roms will vary.
And the physical build may vary. eg/ Volume (+) is actually (-)
(this is a reported build difference that my tablet has)
I seem to come back to Froyo roms for many reasons. Base platform OS.
Hardware acceleration. Stability. Etc.
Personally, I haven't found a newer gen rom that works as well as Froyo.
As stated on this and other sites, Be sure you follow the recomended
procedures for pre and post install. usually posted in the OP.
Really get to know and understand NVflash.
I always come back to the C+C rom final version. Beasty, although nice,
wouldn't do what C+C does for me.
I use my tablet as much, if not more than I use my PC, and I can run Splashtop
to access my pc, which is cool.
I do find certain games or apps that wont work, but, I am patient.
No problems with google apps.
It really comes down to researching, and testing, and finding out
the best rom for you and your tablet.
After all, this support, is almost free. Kudos to the devs.
J.
sorry. this is on another post. hope that is ok.
I've been on FrankenTAB 1.0.9 for two weeks or so and so far one of the best Froyo ROM's I've tried. I flashed quite a few ROM's for the 1.2BL but this one seems to work the best for me at the moment.
I just put the ICS rom on my gtab, and it looks great. Installing it wasn't that hard, I did have to switch bootloaders to 1.2. The only issue is I can't get my external SD card to work. I love using chrome.
In ICS, the external sd card is not named the way it is in other ICS distributions...look for /microsd folder instead of /emmc or /sdcard/external_sd like you may be used to.
If anyone is already on BL 1.2, ICS is definitely worth installing. The only two things that I've found that do not work are the camera and microphone but for me both are non-issues.
Hello ive been using my gtab with tnt rom and it runs really good

Just a word on my own experience regarding the upgrading of my Nexus 10.
Actually I have two because one was stolen and then returned to me - but after I replaced it.
Both of my tablets with 4.4 installed have been great. They did everything I wanted without any problem. Why did I bother to upgrade to Lolipop? Well because I love gadgets and the latest technology.
As soon as I went to 5.0, there was a huge deterioration in the quality of the wireless connection. I had my other non-upgraded Nexus to compare with and it was clear that there was a big speed difference, connection difficulties, and sometime wireless dropouts.
I was very pleased when 5.01 was released because I had read that this owuld fix the wireless problems.
It didn't. Exactly the same problems. No improvement at all - and I had my 4.4 tablet to compare with.
Last weekend, I finally found the time to revert to 4.4 using the WugFresh Nexus toolkit.
Absolutely brilliantly easy to do. Took about 20 minutes and I was restored to 4.4.
There has been an immediate improvement in the performance of the tablet so far as wireless connectivity is concerned. It's like night and day.
Frankly, I'm puzzled as to what benefits there are from a Lolipop upgrade. It's certainly not the next big thing, by any stroke of the imagination.
I understand that 5.02 will be released in sometime this month. I suppose that I will try it out but generally I would advise people to stay with 4.4. It is a well developed mature OS. Is there a need to change?
The upgrade quality is quite hit and miss by what I'm reading. Both my Oneplus one and Nexus 10 run a custom build of 5.0.1 and I haven't encountered any problems that are being reported everywhere. I wish with tech troubleshooting there was a "one size fits all" solution but that's utopian thinking. I've upgraded and am finding the tweaks in the functionality quite useful, but the main reason for the upgrade has been the looks. You could try a custom ROM based on 5.0.2 seeing that you're familiar with the rooting toolkit anyways
I think battery life on my nexus 10 has taken a slight hit but it's nothing that I would revert back to 4.4 for. Oneplus one just runs like a nuclear reactor with any ROM
I sideloaded 5.0 via Wugfresh shortly after it came out and then reverted to 4.4 two days later.I had no special problems aside from the unavailability of Xposed framework, which is a deal-breaker for me. I have 4.4 set up the way I like it (including many "Lollipop" UI elements) and didn't find anything in 5.x that would justify giving that up.

Thanks for this. I just want a standard rom - rooted. Improved looks would be nice but if it means sacrificing connectivity then I'll stick with 4.4.
I have to say that while I had 5.01 installed, I did get the impression that it was really just about looks.
I found the double entry screen - swipe to reveal pin screen - and then pin code to access - very lumpy and unnecessary.
I suppose that I will try 5.02 when it arrives but I'll be quick to revert if there is any deterioration in existing 4.4 functionality.
I expect that 5.XX is really just intended to work correctly the new 64bit gen of devices
It sure is a mystery why there are such a variety of experiences switching to lollipop. Mine has been all positive, and the improvement in smoothness alone was worth it. In KK there was such a jitter or stutter that was most noticeable when scrolling through screens or app drawer. It's either gone or barely there at times. Which makes sense, there were supposed performance improvements in 5.0.
If you're unsure about upgrading don't assume your experience will be like anyone else's. It's worth it if your N10 likes the taste of lollipops better than kit kats. You can always make a nandroid backup before trying.
I too reverted to 4.4: WiFi issues on lollipop are a deal breaker, and being able to use xposed (pie controls plus a few minor tweaks) on 4.4 is a nice plus.
Sent from my Nexus 10 using Tapatalk
I had these same issues tried everything to sort the slow WiFi and the constant drop outs ,just by chance I changed the channel on the router and bingo! It cured all the issues I was having so something worth trying before giving up on lollipop.
I was hoping that 5.02 would fix the WiFi problems - it didn't. My tablet is downgrading to 4.4.4
Saw too many negative comments, and didn't want to lose xposed modules. Never upgraded!
P.S.
Lollipop is the Vista/Windows ME of Android!
Dead Cookies leave no trails...
Same issues for me. A few times a day I get dropouts, then authentication problem on my WiFi, but after a reboot it connects without any hicks. Worst update ever. I'm also thinking of going back to 4.4.4.
I have both Nexus 5 and Nexus 10. Been installed CM-Nightly build regularly. Only Nexus 10 experienced wifi issues. Just like mentioned here from different members, dropouts and authentication errors. Toggle wifi on/off will have it up awhile.
I live with this problems since 5.01 out. With now 5.1 on horizon, I hope we will have this issue fixed. Otherwise, I am going back to 4.4 in Nexus 10.

Been an owner of SGP 621 for almost 4 years now. Device still runs good though battery has been noticeably not as good already. I just want your thoughts about your preference if whether you use stock or custom rom as daily driver. Your thoughts about the battery life and smoothness of either and the pros and cons you found out. Are you planning to change tablets soon?
I had it for some years now, still like it. Looked around to see what options are out there, but the Android market for tablet are not very big unfortunately. I'm not very fond of huge TV sized phones (always used compact versions), so a tablet is nice to have to. I bought a Lenovo Tab4 for my mom, and actually like it when I was configuring it. Maybe it will be the next one when my Xperia Tab's life runs out.
Don't think I have noticed any huge drop on battery life, recharge it a couple of times a week at most. Think I get a fair amount of hours from it, bit hard to tell depending how I use it. But for most times I get about 2-4 days. I have used a couple of custom roms on it, but had some trouble with the WiFi connection just dropped on those, so I'm on the latest firmware (rooted and debloated 6.0 which feels a bit old, but works). Maybe I'll try another round with some roms in a while.
Do you feel laggy using it as stock right now? Are you attracted to upgrade to ipad mini?
Always modded stock! I've just tried AICP Oreo on my Z3TC and hated it so just about to reflash 291. Custom ROMs generally have issues which tend to frustrate.
I am running AICP, 9.0 Pie. Really great and smooth ROM, even better with a custom launcher. Would never go back to stock again. It's amazing how well our old Z3 Tablets run Pie.
