I just rooted my first android, obviously the TBolt.
I am very new to this. I may have touched 'Command' maybe once before this. I rooted manually with the help of everyone on this site and others. Everyone has been very helpful with this whole process, but now I'm stuck.
I want to flash a rom and kernel from Das BAMF 1.1
I download the rom and kernel, put the rom on my sd root and open with Rom Manager but it does not seem to take.
So i tried to open the kernel but putting that on the sd and hboot, right? The bootloader seems to read it but does not do anything with it. I'm assuming I'm suppose to be seeing what was going on when i rooted my phone.
If you need any other info, i'll be more than happy to provide that for you.
I would have posted in the development part of the forum but this is my first post on this site.
Thanks in advance. Would really appreciate the help. What's the point of root if i can't put a custom rom onto my TBolt?
I just loaded the ROM and went about it the same way you're trying.
Make sure you have PG05IMG.zip on the root of your SD (with that exact name). When you load into hboot, it *should* automatically detect it and start running through the process, you shouldn't have to hit anything. After it checks some files you should see something along the lines of "Do you want to start update? <vol up> yes <vol down> no".
If it hangs at any point you might want to try downloading it again. After you get the kernel loaded you can flash the rom file via RomManager from your SD Card.
Also, maybe throw a picture up of what you're seeing if the above doesn't seem to help.
Thank for the response!
Actually, after being so fed up with trying to get the zip to load with hboot, i decided to take another dive the manual way and fastboot the boot.img kernel through adb. It worked great! I checked the kernel after rebooting and it said that match 1st date that was in the file.
So, now I need to find a way to get the rim zip file on the phone. I downloaded the 1.2 version and I still get the same thing as before. I open clockwork recovery and install from sd and it says installation aborted.
Any ideas?

What do you mean by that? How are you selecting install from sd but you don't have the file on the SD?

Sorry! I typed all of that on my phone on my break. I mean to flash the rom zip file. It is on my sd card and I can see it when I boot into recovery but the installation aborts.
This is what I'm talking about...
I have a feeling this is not the first time someone has run into this.
There's probably some simple fix but since this is a new phone, there really isn't too much info on ROMs yet.
If anyone cares... i did it!
I used the one click root the first time and either i missed a step or there was a corrupted file somewhere because it's better now with the manual root.
I whiped the whole phone, rooted completely manually and all is well.
Also, the Das ROM installed properly.
thanks for everyone's help!

Hi, I just got a hand me down samsung fascinate to replace my barely functioning OG Droid. I rooted it and installed rom manager and it kept failing the custom rom installation or any installation of anything from recovery manager. It kept saying the signature verification failed if I remember the error code correctly. That was with the 3e recovery software. I read a few posts that said the older 2e version would work better with rom manager.
So I used odin and reverted to an older software revision, 2.1-update1. That successfully shows 2e as the recovery manager version. But now the market doesn't show rom manager(free) as an install option, premium shows up though. If I use the web browser to look at the market and look for it it shows up but it shows four devices, my old droid, a nook I rooted and converted for a friend, and then two devices that just show a question mark and doesn't allow them to be selected for installation. I thought thats ok I'll just download it from clockwork mods website and install it manually. I downloaded it but astro opens it and shows no info, details tab says it cannot open RomManager.apk as APK file. If I open it with file manager it says it cannot parse package. I tried downloading it on my computer and transferring it to my phone and it still says the same thing.
So I'm really confused as to what is going on. I do have install non market stuff checked.
I was hoping someone could give me some advice. I want to install miui as that was what I ran on my droid and liked it. Want to see how it runs on a faster phone.
Thanks in advance hopefully I provided enough information and didn't miss something simple.
When you were on Froyo, did you install the modified 3e Recovery needed for CWM to stick? I'm sure this is your problem if you didnt take this step.
Here is a link to the thread with everything you will need. If you have additional problems, dont hesitate to ask!
Hope this helps!
BTW: 1. Dont worry about this being for the infuse. It will work fine & 2. These types of threads should go in the Q&A section, for future reference
Rom manager is pointless unless you run cm7 nightlies. Get the recovery fixed for cm7 (first post of jt's cm7 thread in development) put miui rom on sd. Pull batt, flash fixed cm7 recovery in odin, insert battery (don't boot), 3 finger to recovery and flash miui. Profit.
good day.
First thank you for the replies very appreciated.
Tone_Capone I was going to try your method first. You are correct when I was on the updated firmware I did not flash the "fixed" 3e recovery did not realize there was one. My question now is I'm currently at 2e recovery, on the older firmware. Can I still follow those directions and put the modified 3e recovery onto the phone how it is. Or does the modified file count on other files being in place that I don't have since I'm downgraded? Do I need to update it again? I hate to ask but I just want to make sure.
chopper the dog Sorry about wrong section, thought q and a would be for commonly asked questions and the answers for them. I was gonna try this method then but I'm not sure if I choose bootloader in odin or pda like I did when downgrading the firmware.

refer to section 3...just replace ics rom with miui... although honestly I would go with ics 4.0

thanks everyone, droidstyle I followed your links directions and miui is up and running. Very appreciated. I considered ics but I'll wait a while.

Just for future reference, It is customary of this forum that if someone were to find a post helpful, go ahead and hit the thanks button on their post. Some guys take this very seriously.
I have Xtreme Outcast senseless on my rezound. I want to get the Venasaur Rom v3.2.0. How do I proceed to do this? I know what i'm doing, it's just apparently there is one little mistake that i'm making. I had tried to put the newt one xxx rom on here and when i tried to flashed the boot.img in fastboot it gave me an error. I don't know what you need for the venasaur rom. Or if the same problems will occur.
Man if you want help, we're gonna need a lot more information. Please list your current config and bootloader lock status, as well as the steps you are using to try to flash and the error messages you are getting. With this info I'm sure you will find the help you are looking for.
Im guessing he got a mainver error?
If that's the case then there are some threads on how to fix that. In all honesty just s-off it makes things so much easier. Don't do something if you don't know why you are doing it, check md5 sums.
My bootloader is unlocked. i did this the day i got the rezound. Would flashing the Venasaur rom need the ICS RUU? I havent flashed it yet.

Try flashing the kernel in fastboot.
You don't NEED the ruu u can use it but at this point I'd wait till the official ota
I have already tried to flash in fast boot. When I try to flash I get "error boot.img can't be loaded"
What is your boot loader version, what recovery are you running. Please, please list the steps you are going through to attempt this flash. We would like to help but with the little info you are providing, you are making it very diffacult.
---------- Post added at 04:44 PM ---------- Previous post was at 04:42 PM ----------
Also I have flashed this phone a hundred times and never flashed a single ruu
my bootloader is 2.10. I havent tried to flash the venasaur rom yet because i cant get flashboot to recognize my phone. i have installed the htc drivers and still no luck. When i type adb devices my phone doesnt pop up and i think thats the problem. I just dont know how to solve it
Unzip the Rom, open the kernel folder and copy the ph98img.zip to the root of your sd card. Make sure there are no previous image files there. Then pull your battery and put it back in. Hold volume down and power untfill the phone boots to the bootloader. Select boot loader let it search and click apply update.
Well idk what has happened but after trying the same thing for hours it finally worked. For those who helped or attempted to help, thank you

Where exactly do you mean by "root of your sd card"? I'm don't what I'm doing at all. I followed a tutorial step by step and ran into this same problem. My computer stopped connecting to my phone and it continued to give me the same error message.

"Root of the sdcard" refers to having the file on the main directory, like not inside a folder. Just on the card itself, where if you were to look on the sdcard which is called ext_sdcard in the phone, you would see the file without having to look inside the folder.
In addition to your post Charlie:
There is root directory and subdirectory.Hence the term root and giving root access, meaning changing any file within the system. Without root access in leymans (sp?) terms, only allowing limited read/write access to user apps.
Best way I can describe it without technicalities.
So guys, I'm new to this and thought I would jump in at the deep end.
I unlocked my HTC One X+ easily and set about rooting.
I've got TWRP installed but it keeps telling me it needs to install superuser before it can root.
I have totally wiped the phone, how come if Im not rooted?
How do I get an OS and indeed the kernel or ROM onto the phone?
Its and International OX+, I've got the right kernel... what do I need to do?
It was locked to O2 if that makes a difference
I followed the instruction in Hasson but then wiped the OS
I know its a simple procedure but can someone walk me through it please
So I've downloaded Kernel 3.1.10-ge7581e4
I have no idea what to do next, come on guys I know its not difficult for you guys.

If you wiped as you said, you need to push with adb a rom of your choice to the internal memory of the phone and then install it within twrp.
Please read instructions 2 or 3 times before attempting anything, seems like you rushed and now you're temporarily without phone till you flash a rom on it again. I doubt any root guide tells you to wipe the phone, your own fault on this.
To sum it up:
Put a rom's zip of your choice in the internal memory with adb push
flash the rom within the twrp recovery (install option)
flash the kernel for the specific rom with fastboot (each rom has a guide and download for it)
You can now search about it more easily, plenty of posts and info about this.

Thanks, I did indeed rush into it but I have been meaning to do it for a year and just thought go for it, I know its all salvageable..ish!
So yep, I've got the ROM I want but don't understand the kernel, I see no guide to download it, all I know is I took a note of the Kernel before I wiped my phone and I have managed to find the exact kernel.
The ROM or RUU as it is, is an O2 UK version, I figure it must be the one I want as it was an O2 phone in the UK.
I still don't know what folders to put things in, TWRP can't see a boot.img that I have on the phone when installing, it can only see it through file explorer.
And then, every time I power down the phone TWRP asks to install Superuser, its cant, theres nothing to install it to, so it just keeps asking.
This is all because I hated the Sense 5 update, indeed Im till looking for the Sense 4 ROM fo HOX+

Sigh, if you had read carefully you'd know that boot.img need to be flashed through fastboot and not from recovery. Every rom has this info or a batch file for this.
So what exactly are you trying to do? Root the stock rom that came originally with the phone or installing a custom rom?

Lols, thanks dan, I hope you don't hate me!
Root the stock ROM
For starters..
The boot.img is the Android Revolution HD
The RUU is O2 UK
I do realise they are two different ways of installing an OS, I would just like one of them to work!
So think install RUU, then kernel
But put them where and how
I bought the Android Hackers book, but theres nothing about HOX+ in it, and seeing as that's the only phone, I've got to practise on I thought I would ask you specifically.

I see, the easiest ways would be to use a custom rom now. For example, the one you already got the kernel from(android revolution hd)
To root you dont need to install a kernel... just to flash the supersu zip. Using a custom rom's kernel with stock rom might not be a good idea.
Another simple way would be to restore stock rom back to start and try rooting again, this time reading everything carefully
So the two easiest ways i think:
1) flash a custom rom following the instructions they provide in the initial posts for that rom
2) run the o2 correspondent RUU to restore stock rom (you'd need to relock the bootloader), also reading carefully posts in the forum about restoring to stock
Without getting into too much detail, these are the simplest options.
All the info required to do these are on these forums
Aaarrghhh, its driving me insane as I knew it would, just like XP, Vista Seven and Eight!!!
So Im back to being up all night learning..
Well have installed SDK correctly but device is not seen, no serial, nothing.
I can get it to fastboot though, however I don't know any commands so I cant get it to work
Windows 7 keeps moaning about an mpt file which I downloaded and dont know where to extract it to
All I need to do is copy a few files to the phones sd card and install them right?
Whys that so difficult?
I don't know the difference between a rom an ruu and a boot image, in that I don't know where they should all be placed.
Why cant twrp copy and paste from pc...
So Hassooon works sort of but still none the wiser.
Am following tutorial but fastboot commands are not working
Still cant find right driver.....
So CMD lines not working 100%
So am downloading drivers in sdk manager
And how do I flash the supersu zip?
Still no luck with driver, im on windows 7 32bit
OK I cant push using adb it cant find the file or directory,
Hassooon cant detect the phone as cant windroid universal
I dont think the phone is rooted even though i have twrp on it.
Thus can I have wiped the os?
If not can i restore it?
No I didnt make a backup rom..
mmm a zip on the phone doesnt load in bootloader, count that be my os?
Guys, im stranded in the water here...
On boot im getting...
Failed to open usb master mode
[Preload] Failed to open usb master mode
loading PM35IMG.zip image...
Failed to open usb master mode
please plug off usb
Whats PM35IMG.zip?
Is that the OS?
Am I saved?
Is it easy to get that file to unzip and load?
Can anyone help?
So now I need the right RUU.....
2.17.206.3
Is there anyone out there that can help please?
So have managed to install superuser and root my phone, all instructions for doing this were wrong including Hassoon, had to have the phone in System screen to do it, not bootloader or recovery.
Now cant get adb to push file to sdcard...
Man alive, how to make something very easy, sound very difficult.
Would any of you experts care to help?
Just trying to install a ROM.zip to Root and place the boot img in right place.
Well, the instructions are dire but after 10 days of persistance have installed Android Revolution HD 8, finally my phone is up and running better than the bloated os that came with the phone so, you can call this thread resolved.
I'm following the steps in the link below to root my phone:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/show....php?t=1426377
At step 3, I did get a successful message (I can't remember the message now, but, it seemed successful), but, what exactly does it do? Should I have an extra recovery file on my computer or phone? I don't see any new file created on my computer. So, I just want to make sure it worked properly before moving on.
Thanks.

Oops, overlooked this question. If you were communicating with your phone using adb, i don't think anything was created on the computer. The successful thing was unlocking the phone I think, so you could install a custom recovery, which lets you install custom roms. If you've already installed a new rom and run through the setup, I gotta figure the installation of the recovery was successful, as you can't flash custom rom without having a custom recovery installed first. Remember that with some roms you must download the appropriate gapps to provide a handful of the google apps that couldn't be included in the custom rom.
What does the custom recovery do?

No worries, it's probably better that this question is separated in a new thread, anyways.
I didn't move on. I restrained myself from going ahead! Thank goodness you answer pretty fast . Learned the hard way in other experiences.
So, I didn't install a custom rom and based on the original post, I gather, there is no need to., so I'll skip it for now. However, can I install it later, correct, after following the remainder of the instructions?
Thanks.

You can do ANYTHING!!! You are an infinite soul, unbound by nature and the laws of physics.
And I'm sure you will be able to flash a custom rom following the instructions when you want to, seeing as you have the good sense to read and be cautious.
Hello everyone!
I've been very happy with my rooted M9 for the last few months but now a system update message on my screen and I'm trying to figure out what to do about. I seem to recall when I rooted my phone that there could be complications if I install a system update on a rooted phone (like making a Nandroid Backup) but I'm finding scarce information on the topic. Does anyone here have some advice about this?

Follow the second link above.
You will need to restore the factory system.img using TWRP (exFAT or NTFS for external USB as file is > 4GB).
This puts the modified system (root) back to stock so the update will run successfully.
Flash the original recovery for you system version too.
Then you can accept the OTA and then root the phone again.
Thanks for the responses! I'm still uncertain about a few things so tell me if I have this right.
First I need to restore the factory image. Is that a guy named OJM is talking about on this thread? (http://forum.xda-developers.com/sprint-one-m9/general/rooting-guide-t3073004)
To restore your clean system backup to accept OTAs, you must use fastboot. If you are S-ON, you must be in download mode.
-copy your clean system.emmc.win to your adb/fastboot folder on your pc
-boot into download mode
-use cmd fastboot flash system system.emmc.win
Click to collapse
In that case, what is a system.emmc.win?
Then I flash the original recovery...what are you refering to when you say "original recovery"?
After that my phone should be locked again and I can go to that second link, download the latest firmware and flash it. And then I can unlock and root my phone again.
Edit: So it looks like someone has made a guide on how to get the OTA updates (if you use the right words in your search). It looks no one done anything with it since May so maybe it still works? http://forum.xda-developers.com/one-m9/general/best-unlocking-bootloader-rooting-guide-t3087354
I would just run the official RUU, it's a one shot process will take care of everything including the radios. Much easier than messing around, just make sure you are S-OFF before you do it. When it's done just flash the latest TWRP and install your rom you will be done.

hi sim I have a question the only thing I got to make sure is that the phone is S-OFF and nothing will happen because I read that also the bootlooder had to be lock again so I'm not sure
