phone portal won't disable! - Atrix 4G Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

this is really frustrating. i flashed back to 4.1.26 in order to do the root/update, but now on a stock install, everytime I connect USB it will default to Phone Portal. I have USB debugging enabled but it will not run if phone portal is running.
if I go to the USB options and select anything besides PP (Mass Storage, None), it will select it, start USB debugging, and then a little while later immediately go back to phone portal, disable debugging and show the "Moto Phone Portal running on USB @ http://192.168.x.x".
Because of this, I can't run anything ADB related because it won't stay in debugging mode. How can I disable phone portal from doing this? i have never had this issue before I flashed back to 4.1.26. Even if I mount the SD cards and it shows up on the computer, eventually it will go back to phone portal. this is really frustrating. already tried a 2nd factory reset, I don't want to go and re-flash back again if I don't have to. any help is appreciated. thanks!

It just does that. It is Motorola Media Sync which causes it. I had to uninstall Motorola Media Sync to get that to stop. Moto 2nd level support knows that the Portal will atcivate with USB not matter what. Their answer use portal over WiFi. Me...I just uninstalled it.

thanks man.
i finally got it to stay by putting it in mass storage mode and opening my photos folder and constantly flipping through the photos to keep the connection alive long enough to run the 'beforeupdate.bat' for the 4.1.57 root method. haha
now i'm waiting for the update to download... i work in a secure area so i have no wifi access, so instead i had my co-worker hotspot his iPhone (running on t-mo EDGE). longest 17MB download ever. it's been about 30 minutes and it's at 40%.

Had same issue. If you are rooted, you can use Titanium Backup to freeze the phone portal. Worked for me.

How did you uninstall it? It's greyed out for me...

I've uninstalled phone portal and media sync but it still keeps forcing the moto phone portal on me when I connect my device... What else can I do?!

Thanks for the advice. I hook up my phone to another computer and found out that it was the drivers.
Sent from my MB860 using XDA App

I know this is an old thread but this needs to be said for anyone else suffering from this problem. The fix is not to freeze/uninstall any applications, this is a common error that occurs with the drivers installed on your computer. Simply uninstall the drivers on your computer and re-install them. This will fix the issue.

Touch Pro will not sync via USB...

Okay all. Usually I don't post and just lurk around here to find the answers to my issue. This time after reading 300 posts about Activesync and the TP my problem is still not resolved.
Up until last Friday I have been able to sync the TP with my computer running WinXP via the USB connection. I sync with my exchange server OTA but use the USB connection for file transfers. My computer won't recognize that the TP is even plugged into the USB now. It still charges, but doesn't do anything else. I've rebooted the machine and TP, reinstalled Activesync on computer, unchecked the "enable advanced network functionality" box, changed USB cords, verified that I have the correct three repllog.exe values in my notification queue, and even hard reset the TP. Still no luck. I would think that it's something to do with the computer except that I plugged my Mogul in to check and it synced instantly.
Does anyone have any more ideas why the TP would not be registering as connected? You all are amazing when it comes to stuff like this, so any help would be greatly appreciated.
Thanks in advance.
uninstall the Windows Mobile-based Device from the
network adapters section of Device manager on the PC.
control panel -> system -> hardware tab -> device manager button
restart pc and plug in the phone via usb and select active sync.
also the reason this may work in your case is i have had to do this for a friend.
windows installed the general rdnis driver however each device has a different
instance installed and thus the one device can have a corrupted driver yet the
other works perfect.
i see that u used another usb cable, cuz once it happened to me that the cable would charge but vista wouldn't recognize my TP "unrecognized USB device" , until i changed my usb cable!
Well I finally just went to a friend at the Sprint store and he swapped me for another TP. The new one works perfectly with the same setup that the other wouldn't. I can only guess that somehow the USB connection on my phone failed somehow. Just wanted to post this in case anyone else may have this issue in the future. Thanks for the responses.
This problem has happened on a friends, as well as just happening to mine (about 20 minutes ago). The usual fix which seems to clear it up:
1 - Hook up phone to computer
2 - On phone, start ICS (Internet Sharing in Start -> Programs)
3 - Select PC Connection "USB" and Network Connection of any type (if Sprint stock ROM, I recommend using "Sprint")
4 - Hit the "Connect" soft-key (bottom left)
If you've never used Internet Sharing on the phone, your computer should install some drivers... Once that is completed, click the Disconnect left soft-key on the phone. Now disconnect the cable from the computer.
Close out ICS or soft-reset the phone.
Once the phone is back up, plug it in - it should work.
I don't know what is getting reset in the phone, but unless I connect with ICS, then ActiveSync will not connect whether I soft-reset or not.
The same thing happened with my phone.... I took it to the Sprint store and they even tried a hard reset. It worked once after that then again it wouldn't sync. So they just replaced mine.... It was like you said.... some malfunction in the phone itself.
Hope HTC can figure out why this is happening.
Touch pro not sync
I can sync with my Vista Laptop and my friends xp machine but not to my xp desktop. I have tried many different cables. Each time I try something new, I toggle the "enable faster data synchronation box on USB to PC on try to sync then off then try to sync.
I have tried to delete all the usb drivers and rebooted to let the computer put in a new set.
I have tried to delete all the non running programs in my device manager using view hidden files.....
I have uninstalled active sync and then reinstalled it.
I have hard reset my phone a few times to no avail.
I went and bought a blue tooth adapter so I could sync using blue tooth and this computer does not do a good job of recognizing the adapter, but it did recognize it the first time but, could not pair the two. my blue tooth adapter is now coming up as a an unknown device
when i hook up the phone this is the message i get:
USB not Recognized,
One of the USB devices attached to this computer has malfunctioned, and windows does not recognize it. For assistance in solving this problem, click this message....
Any ideas?
Thanks,
Kent
MCW junior member THANKS....
thanks so much, this worked for me I could not sync my tasks or calendar, once I did what you said here I did get and Error Code 67..then cannot connect saying remote party has ended this connection...whatever that means...but anyway it proceeded to start automatically resynching and walla..all of sudden my tasks and calendar were on my computer ....first time I was ever on this forum ....I shall continue reading and learning here...so appreciate your help...I love my HTC Touch Pro and have just figured out how to connect to my big screen tv with only an MP3 or the like cable...works beautifully...except picture on tv is not the clearest...I will work on perfecting that next if it is possible...
Then I want to figure out how to get the phone connected to my computer screen, just like I did to my TV...then your phone acts as a controller...it's so cool!!

Ok I just found a solution for this, at least under Vista.
Click Start > Settings > Connections (tab)
Choose USB to PC
Once I removed the check mark next to "Enable advanced Network functionality" and clicked OK, my PC immediately saw my TP.
Hope this helps someone.
so what does the faster syc option do?
Ok so I searched the internet and found the advice to turn off the faster sync option on the phone.
After trying everything else I figured what the heck..
So it worked.
(btw windows adds a dif driver rather then the window-mobile baised device driver... )
So what does this option do? What does it point to being the problem on the computer?
Thanks,
HA>!

I am having the same problem except the enable advanced network functionality option is checked and grayed out so it can't be unchecked.
I am running a 6.5 rom...
Any suggestions?
Solution solved
If you go to Settings->Connections->USB to PC and uncheck Enable faster data synchronization.
You will notice below that it will say "(Clear this check box if ActiveSync does not recognize the device)"
Once I did this it worked perfect.

Think of this step as telling your tp to quick boot/sync if nothing between the device and the reciving pc has changed (ie: hardware, software etc.
Enables faster syncing and quicker connection and authentication between pc and WM device. Reason for unchecking this to make it work?, by hard-reseting or changing specfic phone information you've reset specfic settings that are registerd with your pc.
i was having this problem with my sprint tp2 and tried it and worked. wish i would of learned if before reseting my computer and losing some windows i had open and the hard reset on my phone and losing all my contacts now i gotta go back to sprint store to get them again.
Works on the Touch2
I had this problem, which was driving me nuts especially as it was intermittent. I found Dashrender's advice and followed it except for turning off "Enable faster data synchronisation". Brilliant, works perfectly, thanks.
But what are HTC doing putting something in the software that fouls things up?
I knew i wasnt loosing my mind!
I have been workn on phones for a while. And have just been freakn about these same Issues Sony vio with 64bit vista. Thanks for all the tips. only took 6 hrs of pain to figure it out myself.
I have a similar problem now with my USB to PC . i have used this usb cable for many flashes but now when I plug it in, my computer doesnt recognize the usb device. also TV-Out pops up on my phone too. what is that all about? i dunno what to do
just found this thread searching for why my tp2 wouldn't sync. somehow under usb to pc i had it set to disk drive instead of active sync. checked it and works like a charm, can even see it in my computer now.

[Q] Fascinate recognized as CD Drive not Mass Storage Drive ??

Samsung fascinate
rooted
windows 7 with Samsung 64 bit drivers installed
back to stock DL01 and then OTA DL09 about five times today.
Here is the problem, when i mount my phone, intermittantly Windows 7 doesnt give me the pop up window that lets me view my sd card files. It gives me a pop up window with 2 choices:
Option # 1. View your files - this really doesnt let me view anything except 4 files one of them being a " Bootloader file "
Option # 2. Install Bootstrap Loader exe.
I have had my phone since september and rooted, rom"ed OTA"ed all of it and today this started happening.
When i look in Drives and Printers my phone is listed as a CD Drive and not a Mass Storage Drive.
Just curious if any one else has had this issue and what might have caused it to start happening.
I installed Samsung Kies earlier this afternoon but uninstalled it since it was pretty much worthless to fascinate owners and the U.S. isnt supported.
Any input would be appreciated. Thanks in advanced for any info.
have you tried re downloading the drivers from samsung.com? it worked for me.
This has been talked about in several places already. It is a common bug with DL09. The best solution is to flash one of adrynalyne's 1/18 test kernels found here. I hope this helps!
BTW: make sure it is one of the kernels with the cd fix
when im on 2.1 aosp, i have that same issue, to fix reboot with debugging enabled
Seems to be related to some new 'Media sync' option.
I did some playing around and the following seemed to let me 'mount'
the phones as before. ( But I dont like it. )
Hoping for some direction from Verizon tech on
a) what is media sync ?
b) how do I turn off permanently If I dont need or want to use it?
Unplug phone from usb cable.
Then on Phone... Menu...Settings..USB settings
Change to ' Ask on connection'.
then press home button.
Plug in USB cable.
When prompted...Press 'Mass storage'.
Now wait...wait..wait. Took about 30 to 45 seconds.
Annunciator bar should have usb symbol. Drag it open.
Press usb connected....Press Mount..
My laptop now recognized the SD card on E drive.
Copy files as usual.
When done...Open Anunciator bar and 'Turn Off' USB storage.
Media Sync is a mode that allows programs such as Windows Media Player and Rhapsody to access your SD card and copy over DRM protected music.

not sure if it helps with the problems with 2.2 but whenever i had this issue on 2.1 this is what i did, turn off your phone with the usb cable in and turn it back on with the phone still plugged in. It always seemed to work for me
From your homescreen when you hit menu go to usb settings then make sure the little radio button for mass storage device is selected. That was my problem after the latest OTA from verizon. Also it takes like 15 seconds for it to all sync up.
i have searched these forums hi and low, googled, etc. still cant find an answer....
on djo5,dl09 i was able to plug my phone into the usb port in my car, then mount my sd card, and it would automatically connect and find my music and start playing it.
on either dl30, or eb01, i cannot get it to work.
it is very frustrating. everytime i try, (all different combinations debugging on/off mass storage/ ask on connect, etc.)
i get a "device connect failed" message.
does anyone else have this issue?
has anyone been able to get this to work?
Another fix when it shows up as a CD-ROM drive is to right click and eject. Seems to work every time for me.

Thanks your idea of reboot while still plugged in saved me. Tried every other idea with no cure.
Thanks for the post.
Just installed Superclean 2.6 and had issues. I tried ejecting the CD Rom device in Windows, but that didn't work. I changed the usb settings from Mass Storage to Ask On Connection and then tried it again. This time I received the Android guy asking to mount the drive. Yay! It worked! It does however show both a CD rom drive and the mass storage drive in Windows XP.
On another note, I found that if I plug in my phone without unlocking the password first it locks up the phone until I unplug the usb cable attached to the pc.
Make sure you are using a USB cable that has a good connection (like the original one). I bought some aftermarket cables, and while they are good enough for charging, I really think they fit too loose to keep a secure connection.

Thanks guys, this combination worked perfectly for me.
Just fyi, this is due to Verizon bloatware that has been inserted I to the kernel. Adrynalyne and company managed to flush it out of the Eclair kernel, but since we don't have kernel source code for the Froyo kernel yet, there's nothing that can be done at this time. When source is available, this will be fixed by our devs.

USB to PC: keeps disconnecting when accessing memory

Hi mates,
since this evening, my Galaxy S2 (unbranded, unrooted, with stock firmware) was connecting fine with my PC in the "kies mode". I could use kies flawlessy, and I could regularly see my phone in my windows 7 (x86) explorer, and use explorer to read and write files from and to its memory.
Then, this evening, I got a notification, from kies, that an update (of kies) was available (2.0.2.11071.182.2), and I gave my consent to the updater. It did all its dirty job but after the installation of the new version, despite the phone connects via USB, every time I try to access the phone's memory from the PC, the connection drops. It restores backafer one second or two, but then again, if I try to access the phone's memory, it drops agains. The problem appears indifferently when accessing phone's memory from kies, and when doing it from windows' explorer, and this makes me suspect of the drivers, that the new version of kies brought along.
The phone connects correctly to the PC in the direct USB mode, and I can access its memory with no problem, and this also suggests that the problem should be the drivers.
So I uninstalled everything (new kies and drivers), and rebooted the PC, then I dowloaded what I believe is the previous version of kies: 2.0.1.11053.99.3, and launched its installation. After the end of the process, I rebooted the PC, just to be safe. According to the list of the installed software in my PC (in "Control Panel > Uninstall a program"), the drivers have rolled back, as expected, to version 1.3.2410.0 (before they were 1.4.something).
At the first connection of the phone to the PC after the reboot, I got notification from windows that the device installed correctly and it is ready to use (all the tree drivers are indeed reported as installed correctly)...
The point is that all this did not solve the problem at all, and USB connection still behaves exactly as badly as before.
I tried again uninstalling and reinstalling everything, also adding a manual clean up of the windows' registry from any entry related to "samsung", checking that the phone was not set in "USB debugging" mode, and disabling the antivirus, but despite everything appears to be fine, the phone regularly keeps on refusing to maintain USB connection alive everytime I try to access its memory.
What drives me mad is the fact that until this evening, everything was working flawlessly!
What else can I try????
I've just made a test on another PC running windows XP, with latest Kies 2.0.2.11071_128 installed. It's my office PC, and although I'm not 100% sure, I seem to remember that, until yesterday, my phone was connecting fine with it, and with that version of kies. But now, all of a sudden, I have the same problem also with this PC...
So, likely, it is a problem of the phone... the MTP application restarts everytime I try to access the phone from the PC, so... what can I try on the phone, to see if I can fix this annoying issue? I DON'T WANT TO FACTORY RESET MY PHONE, PLEASE!!!!
If any of you has any suggestion, I would be more than grateful...

I had the same problem the other day and I could not find a way to fix it, in the end I did a factory reset from Settings/Privacy and its ok now, just wiping cache did not fix it, factory reset was needed.
Dear Odia, thank you very much for replying and giving me a clue.
So... it appears that there's nothing else to do, is there? Buhahhaa!!! I want to cry!!!! I haven't made a backup and resetting the phone will be really painful... I'm already starting to feel the pain in my ass!!!
By chance, do you happen to know if I will have to buy again the apps I have already bought from the market? I have always kept both "Backup personal data" and "Automatic restore" ticked in "Settings>Privacy"... Could this be of any help?

You can always make a backup now before the reset and you will not have to buy paid apps again.
Yes but how can I backup my phone if kies will loose the connection with the phone as soon as it tries to access its memory?
Oh wait a moment, Perhaps I could use Kies air? Deos it allow to backup the phone? 'cause I can't test it now in my office, there's no wifi here...
From what I can tell, its the amount of the power that is supplied to the USB port itself that is the issue. I have the same problem when I put my i9100 on certain computers. Same thing happens to my WD MyPassport. Certain computers it works fine, and some it will power it for a bit, but once the device starts to draw too much current, it just disconnects.
This is why I try to do all my modding and flashing on a laptop, since, for me, they seem to be the most reliable in keeping devices powered up properly.
This is certainly a good point, but in my particular case, USB connection used to work up until yesterday with all the PCs I have (2 laptops and a desktop PC), whereas since yesterday, it works with none (with and without using the same USB ports). In addition if I use straight USB connection (hence not through the MTP app used by kies), it works fine.
Anyway what you have just mentioned is actually what scares me, because it would mean a hardware fault. But I'm crossing my fingers, hopefully it's (just) a software related issue and a factory reset will solve it. After all, straight connection works, so it would be really surprising if it were a hardware fault.
I will try resetting everything when I get home. Another "nice" busy evening to account to Samsung!
I guess if all samsung customers were honestly paid for every hour spent mending/fixing the issues of samsung products, the company would declare bankrupt in a matter of a few days!
Ok, I solved the issue with a drastic factory reset.
Thanks Odia for helping.
I spent 8 hours backing up and restoring everything included all the settings and personalisations. I went to bed at 3 am, eating only a quick sandwich in front of the bloody phone.
THANK YOU SAMSUNG, I wish to electrocute all your ****ing managers.
I hate when something in a device screws up all of a sudden and noboby knows why. It could happen again any time, and again I would have to spend hours mending a stupid phone instead of enjoying my life.
By the way, does anybody knows exactly what data is automatically backed up and restored on google servers by these functions?
"Settings>Privacy>Backup of personal data"
"Settings>Privacy>Automatic restore"
I always had both tiched, and I noticed that almost all the applications downloaded from the market that were installed on the phone, were automatically re-downloaded and restored on the phone at first boot after reset, but I'm not too shure I have understood what else was automatically restored.
I just read this thread for the first time, and was sympathetic to your issue when I started reading. I could see that there had been problems, but suggestions had been made and you seemed to be making good progress.
I was getting ready for offering advice and wishing you well with your problem.
Then suddenly you start to wish physical harm on Samsung employees.

This is a simple solution try it and it will work for you the next time you face it most of the time it is a hardware issue i have been facing the same issue and nothing helped neither the factory reset nor the *#7284# procedure.
Take a pointy object like a pin or a paper and then clean your usb slot of the phone properly cuz most of the times usb pin points gets connected with each other due to the atmosphere and metal reaction. After that it will work like a charm for you. Before commenting anything negative i would appreciate if those who are facing this issue for a long time try this and then comment
Had the same problem, solved it by upgrading the phone software.
Setting > About Phone > Software update.
No need to afraid losing files. Hope that helps.
i faced the same problem on the GalaxyS sometime back. i did factory reset too. I got the same problem again. but i remembered it working on my LG TV so i did not go for factory reset. I went for re-install of samsung's USB driver for Windows. now it is working fine.
I fully agree that Samsung needs to be more responsible and responsive in resolving the such problems without causing data losses.

You could have saved a lot of hassle by installing a custom Rom and Kernel. I hate MTP mode! Mass storage mode is much better, I never had any problems with that....
Workaround - Power Management
This may be fixed, for now. However, in the future, there is a small workaround that you can use so that you're not required to wipe your phone every time this happens.
Here's what I do:
Since the device's connection is severed after the use of a certain amount of power, we can control the power management of the port that the device is connected to.
On WinXP:
Enter "Control Panel" > "System"
Click on "Hardware"
Click on "Device Manager"
Find the "Universal Serial Bus Controllers" section
Click the "+" next to that, and find the "USB Root Hub" that the device is connected to.
Right-click on the Hub, then select "Properties"
Click on the "Power Management" tab
Then, UNcheck the box that says "Allow the computer to turn off this device to save power."
This will prevent the connection from resetting. It's a quick workaround that works pretty well for me.
However, I ought to note that the changes should be undone after you're done with syncing the device, ESPECIALLY if you're on a laptop. Otherwise, you could risk a lot of battery/power usage within a short time, even if there is no device connected to that port.
Good luck, I hope this helps.
Cheers!

Please don't bail out because of that comment, i have been having this issue for a month and AT&T almost sold me another phone telling me it was the USB PORT.
I changed my phone setup dialing *#7284# and changed the UART to : PDA from Modem and same for USB (to PDA) modes. This helped get connected as before it would not even recognize the phone (computer would not do so).
I was am not sure if it is not the battery or charging circuitry, as others also reported, but my charging circuit is working fine and my battery charges 100% and last all day as normal. I can connect to the USB port and see my phone for a short while but it will suddenly disconnect.
But same as before it suddenly disconnects and will reconnect cycling continuously. I also believe it is the charge circuit because when it is charging, i hear the phone constanlty beeping from turning the schreen on/off. Same as when it is plugged into the usb port on computer.
Am tempted to buy a battery, but is can run the phone on the USB port without a battery in the phone. Problem continues without a battery...disconnecting and connecting to the computer.

However, I ought to note that the changes should be undone after you're done with syncing the device, ESPECIALLY if you're on a laptop. Otherwise, you could risk a lot of battery/power usage within a short time, even if there is no device connected to that port.
Good luck, I hope this helps.
Cheers!

I was plagued with this same problem, until I tried the above fix, and it works brilliantly! No more disconnects, great stuff.
It's pretty old topic but maybe someone has same issue and doesn't want to loose data. I had similar problem (couldn't connect to device, also couldn't install/uninstall any stuff because of no-space-available error).
I managed to download all pictures/documents via adb - worked pretty well. A sample command to retrieve all camera pictures:
adb pull /mnt/sdcard/DCIM

[Q] USB Debugging Won't Stay On

Hello everyone! I scanned a few pages and search a bit but couldn't find my exact problem already listed;
When I plug in my USB cable to my laptop (Windows 7) the phone goes into 'installer mode' and sits there for about 10-15 seconds then switches to 'media device' mode. That's cool because I want it to be in media device mode normally, installer mode is useless. The problem is, if I open dev options and select USB Debugging mode, it only stays for 10-15 seconds then pops back into media device mode -- for the 10-15 seconds I can connect from my PC and start pushing my app over but then it fouls up when it comes out of dev mode.
My phone is rooted but I have very few apps on it yet, the only rooted app I have is a wifi tether app which I haven't used yet, and NoBloat which I used to disable some verizon crud. It will still flip out of usb debug mode even if I don't try to push any data to it... GRRR! I also have a problem where I can't sign into Samsung Account ("Samsung Account has stopped working")... but that's another story >=(

Sounds like your wonderful "Debloat" app uninstalled something you needed. That's why these apps are useless. One persons soultion isn't for everyone.

As a matter of fact, I completely re enabled everything I had frozen before posting and it still doesn't work.could it be a flaw in the root process?
To be clear, I never "un-installed" anything with NoBloat, I only "Disabled" or froze some apps (mostly amazon and the verizon nfl center, nothing system-wise).

Well if you want to do a system restore send me a PM and I'll give you instructions to do so. I'll only be up for about another hour or so.

For those waiting with bated breath, a full restore did not help the issue of it not staying in USB Debug mode. In fact, a total reflash of the stock ROM and kernel still had the exact same problem, which I re-created right after I performed the initial setup... so this bug exists in the normal stock ROM it seems...

Your phone might be defective if it never worked from the day you got it. If that's the case you should go to Verizon.

Nah, I'm almost 100% it's just a software problem because if I uncheck Debug mode then check it again, I can use the phone in dev mode for like 15-20 seconds and everything works perfectly... I can push my APK to test and it works great, but after it flips back to media mode it just kind of dies...
Edit: Can you plug your phone into your PC and tell me what mode it starts in, then wait 20 seconds and see if it changes modes? My phone immediately goes into "Installer Mode" then 20 seconds later changes to Media Mode (MTP). Maybe it's a problem with the drivers I have installed causing the phone to flip out of dev mode...

The chumps at Verizon don't know how to do anything besides make phone calls and Samsung support is always closed by the time I get home...
Figured it out! Went into device manager and updated the "CDC Serial" with the driver from the Kies application from Samsung website, that cleared it up!

USB Settings

I have my USB Config set to MTP and USB Debugging ON under Developer Options. However, whenever I connect a USB device, it always resets itself to Charge only and I have to switch it back to File or Photo transfer in order to connect to PC, AA, etc.
Any ideas on how to make the USB setting 'stick' with what I set in DO?
Is there an ADB command? Other setting I should be looking for? Any help is appreciated.

Strange, I *know* that mine 'used to' stay at whatever setting it was left at before. I just tried it now, and it still stays on whatever it was last set to, BUT... It automatically toggles the 'allow debugging over USB' to OFF every time I plug my phone into my computer. Now I know it didn't do this before, I wonder if it has something to do with 'always trust this connection' being set? Also, it really seems like this stuff is behaving just a wee bit different since I unlocked my bootloader. Hmm, could it be they have set a flag where USB debugging always turns off when the device is connected to something, IF the bootloader is unlocked?

I can confirm that this happens on mine too, really annoying, but I think this is not something a lot of people are facing, as there are literally NO other references to this that I can find. The reason why I think this is a very specific issue is that I recently got a Mate 20 X, which is essentially the same phone, and noticed that when I plug in the USB to a PC, I get a dialog pop up at the bottom of the screen asking if I want to transfer photos, files or to charge only. I NEVER saw this on the Mate 20 Pro, but that might be because I messed something up. I did do a lot of fiddling over ADB when the phone was new (mostly disabling apps) and giving permissions to apps like lightning launcher and System UI tuner and I'm wondering if this what has caused the issue.
Obviously even before I did this, I necessarily must have connected to the thing via USB, but strangely, I don't remember seeing this dialog... Having to go into developer mode to change this setting can't be how it's set up normally, as then basically no-one will be able to get connected via MTP (I suspect everyone on XDA knows about this setting, but suspect none of the average Joes even knows the option exists).
So the question is, what did we do wrong and how do we get this diaglog back because I have found that Developer mode is not accessible for other Users set up on the phone so I can't access the phone at all via USB now when the other user is using it...
I'm hoping we can work together to find out what we did wrong!
PS: I find like kaibosh99 that the USB debugging also toggles back to off. I am not rooted or bootloader unlocked
After a lot of faffing and looking into it some more, I don't get the pop-up dialog but have discovered that it is in the notification menu where it shows
USB icon . Charging via USB
Expanding that notification and tapping on it, gives the option to choose file transfer and a load of other stuff. It's a pity that a pop-up dialog doesn't open like on the Mate 20 X, you can see what I mean here
https://uk.community.huawei.com/mat...tried-usb-debugging-and-all-that-already-6786
Much easier than having to go into the notification menu!
