So I've done a lot of searching and haven't really found anything definitive. I've found that with some roms I'll lose GPS signal after a certain amount of time (say 10-30 minutes) and have to turn GPS off and back on or reboot the phone. I saw something about flashing a different radio may make a difference. Kinda just wanted to see other peoples thoughts on the issue or if maybe there is something else I can do before I go flashing a different radio.
Currently running CELB 4.1 and baseband 2.42.01.04.27 and I have the issue.. I've had it with most of Tazz's roms as well. KaosFroyo is the only one Ive used that I've never seen the issue with, but I'm really diggin CELB right now and this is the ONLY issue I've got with it.
Have you tried GPS status in the market? I know it will help you lock in a signal, so it would make sense that it would also help keep your GPS locked in.

I have now.. I did the reset and download options in the program. Too bad this isn't something I can quickly test. I'll report back with the results. Thanks!
I have noticed this as well. Last time it happened to me it was 4:30 in the morning, and the "GPS lost" message came up about 180 seconds before I had to make two freeway changes in an area I'd never been before. (CELB 3.9 and same radio as your case). Fortunately for me I had reviewed the route, so I more or less knew what to do.
If I recall correctly, it has always happened after the Nav app had been running for a fair bit of time - at least 30 minutes or more.
However, I don't know if it is something about the root ROMs or not - I started using rooted ROMs back in March or so, so I really don't have a tremendous operating baseline on stock 2.1 ROMs to compare it to. Maybe it is a problem there, too!
If I recall correctly, the last time it happened, I just pulled up GPS Status and asked it reload the aGPS state (without exiting the Nav app), and the Nav app seemed to gracefully recover.
Annoying? Yeah. I don't know what can be done about it, though - like the "undead calls" problem, it happens so infrequently that it is hard to know whether or not a ROM change actually fixes the problem.

I had the same problem with every 2.2 rom I used GPS with. I decided to go back to 2.1 because I have been needing GPS alot more often lately but I havent tested it out since I made the switch. I'll try it out today and report the results tonight.
This same thing seemed to happen on the 2.1, CyanogenMod 5 based ELB by Conap as well. If it is happening with all of the 2.2 ROMs, I wonder if it's just a CyanogenMod issue?
See http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?p=6812308#post6812308 (this was not the only person reporting it, if you search that thread.)
I really don't think it's ALL 2.2 CM roms though. I've gone on 7 hour car trips with Kaos Froyo without a single drop.. to and from. I've seen another theory somewhere around here about it being certain hardware revisions that act this way with certain software builds. At lease we've got a thread dedicated to this issue now.. maybe we can get something figured out.
Still don't know if the GPS status program helps.. I left navigation turned on for a bit sitting in my house and it stayed connected for the half an hour I left it, just don't think that's gonna be an accurate test with not moving around and all. If it doesn't work I will try a different radio.. I saw somewhere one guy had good luck with a specific older version radio. If that's what it comes down to I'll try.
I have been having issues with the GPS working on both of my phones while using 2.2 roms. I switched to 2.1 a few days ago and I used the GPS on my way to work this morning and didnt have any issues. I also had to flash Senseable a couple of months ago while on a road trip because I was tired of loosing the GPS signal every half hour. It may be a CM thing.
Im having the same issues as well. Haven't found a fix yet..
I've had this issue, after I flashed KaosFroyo(v36), and XTR(4 i think). I recently unrooted using Flashback21 v1 and flashed with the radio included. I have gone back to xtr 5 now and have had no lost gps in over a week. Don't have a clue as to why. hope it helps someone.

I have flashed the radio directly with the verizon zip file that is around and I still get inconsistent results But it always drops a signal eventually in about a 1/2 hour

I've seen it on several ROM's as well. From what i've messed with, it doesn't seem to be dependent on the autokiller memory preset, radio firmware, or amount of overclocking i'm doing. It doesn't seem to be dependent on how many programs are running either. I usually have nav and pandora running while i'm in the car, and sooner or later, the gps poops out.
I feel like it seems to happen less, now that i'm back to using the on-demand governor. but that could just be in my head.
I've had to go back to a 2.1 rom because of it. Its very annoying when the goa signal gets lost right before the exit ramp.

Im thinking of going back to a 2.1 rom as well...
I have also seen the same results on any 2.2 or higher rom. I have since returned to XTRRom 5.0 and have not had a single problem with GPS on any of my jogging runs. I definitely think it is a CM thing. At least on my phone.
Using kaosfroyo v39 and I flashed that sprint phone radio on my eris and haven't had any gps issues. In fact, just the opposite. Mine would lock up before the v39 and the radio flash
I flashed that radio as well and today not one issue at all. Will test more tomorrow
I'm using the 2.42.02.10.29 sprint radio and still seeing it drop out.

Today I even flashed back to the July 2010 version (2.42.01.04.27). the gps dropped out almost every 5 minutes while i was driving around. that's the worst i've seen. So i flashed back to the 2.42.02.10.29 sprint radio again. I haven't seen very good navigation performance on the v1.1 gingershedbread overall, actually. my position on the gps nav doesn't update very often, although it seemed like the voice instructions were still pretty well timed as usual.
Hi! My service bars will sometimes completely drop (I am in full coverage area), and I can't call/send text messages, then it will come back randomly.
I am not sure what caused this, i have tried different radios (EC01,EC09,ED01,ED05) and they all seem to do the same thing.
Any ideas on a fix for this?
Thanks!
(currently on MIUI)
Update: It happens when I am trying to send a text message normally, at the exact same time my service will switch from 3G to 1X.. this is really starting to annoy me. Any ideas guys?
^^occurs now without sending messages
Update #2: Flashed DL09 Stock Eclair Rom, everything booted up fine, did *228 opt 1 & 2, for some reason option 2 wouldn't work, i had to retry it about 4 times before it worked.
I am in a full coverage area and only receiving 0-1 bar of service, and I should be getting 3G but keep locking on to the 1x more often than not
& THIS IS ON THE STOCK ROM which i originated from. I just don't get it
I may just try going in to verizon and getting a replacement? I just don't understand what caused this.
Since your on miui, I would think ec09 radio should be your best bet..have you done a*228 option 2 on ec09? In my experience the ec09 radio has been the best one hands down.
Also the 3g symbol disappearing the moment you send a text is normal and you haven't necessarily lost 3g..it will switch to 1x to send and receive texts/mms.

I have tried EC09 on MIUI and it didn't change anything. When I do *228 it says it completed through the voice on the phone, but the text on the phone says that it failed, so then I just reboot.
This issue has persisted now on ALL Roms, Eclair, Froyo, GB, MIUI MTD or CM7, it hasn't mattered. Or it doesn't matter what radio.
I went into Verizon today and am having a replacement sent to me, so hopefully I will never have this issue again but am scared to try again since this problem has occurred previously...
Now no matter what radio/rom combo whether froyo, eclair, or gb I am on,
my DATA will either not even download ANYTHING from the market or even connect, and if it does it is slow as nails and doesn't ever finish the download. It is the oddest thing. I have always done clean flashes, but it seems like I have ****ED UP my fascinate, it doesn't make sense though because it is all software and not hardware...
^I have tested this on 3 rome already, stock ED01, EF voodoo, and MIUI, ALL of them do the same thing, and this is with clean flashes, clean modem and cam stuff
i just don't understand. I have only made software changes, always used a pit file, only bricked my phone once, and it was a soft brick..
i recently flashed the July ota radio (figured it might help improve signal in my new apartment). Luckily it did improve reception in low signal areas. Unfortunately areas I used to always have full 3g in are now flaky. Ill have 3g for about 5min then it will switch to 1x until I do the airplane on and off thing. Any ideas what I should do? And is it possible to flash an older radio? Thanks everyone
I apologize in advance for all the questions but they will help us get a clear background of your situation. The July OTA radio you flashed gives you 2.42.01.04.27 listed as the baseband version in settings -> about phone? What ROM are you using? What is the PRL version listed in settings -> about phone -> status?

There's also the 2.42.02.10.29 radio put out by Sprint for the HeroC last November which is compatible with the Eris. Since flashing a radio is one of the more dangerous things you can do though, I wouldn't start with this option to try and fix things.

I'd try flashing xtrsense and then do *228 options 1 and 2 before changing the radio. After doing that a clean full wipe install of your Rom of choice you should be in good shape. If you decide you want to later try a different radio I've also had the best luck with the hero radio goose mentioned.

Thanks condemned, I tried that today and still have problems. In this case however, I think its not the rom or radio as apparently people in my area have been having issues with Verizon. Upgrading radio firmware never - yes, read my lips, *never* - improves signal strength issues.
It is possible that bug fixes could affect tower selection (PRL updates also), but for a given tower, the firmware revision will not change signal strength. That's just wishful thinking.
What you can do is experiment with locations within your place, and handset orientation to *slightly* improve signal, but there's only so much wiggle room available, and you will find it hard to reproduce the results. (Weak signals are more likely to be affected by multi-path effects, and the radio wavelengths involved are small - a distance of only 6 inches can be a big deal when the signal is low)
yep 4th post I checked, it was annoying me
Well it appeared to be a Verizon issue, as my 3g is working just fine now

On my Fascinate I my wifi experience hasn't been the best. It drops out in my room whereas my iPod touch 4 has no problems. And I almost always just get 1 bar, more if fairly close to the router.
Is anyone else having low wifi signal their fascinate?
Could it have anything to do with my ROM? It's JT's vanilla GB
fascinates have crappy radios. I took my first one back because I thought the wifi was broken, only to get the new one home and find out that it was only marginally better.

I agree. I'm using CM7 nightly 112 with EH03 radio and I be 15-20 ft away unblocked for the signal and not have full bars. However, I was able to get 1.89Mbps with 3G whereas I only got around 1.2Mbps on the EC09 radio. I thought it may improve the wifi which is why I tried it but aparently no dice.
okay, thanks guys.. At least it's not just me. so is it just the fascinate, or do all Galaxy S have bad radios?
So those of you who received the OTA update...
Have you noticed any improvements related to the radio? Things like battery life and signal strength/holding.
I am wondering if I should take the time to re-lock and RUU for the radio update.
It would be so much easier if we had a way to flash the radio. Even a round about way would be nice.
I will try to keep up with this, and keep this post updated with the general consensus. It will be easier than reading through all the different threads.
EDIT:
Most are reporting that the new radio is a significant improvement. At worst, a few say that they see no improvement, but that it isn't hurting anything either.
I was wondering this myself. Also won't thus update your main version making it a pain to flash a different kernel

Stocked and updated. Last night my battery was very impressive. I probably average 6.5 hours on my battery since I got the phone and last night I hit 8.5 with 45% left. I did use it less than normal since I was busy but I've never come close to that even with the extended battery. I'll be out again today and will be away from a charger for a good 12 hours so we'll see. Oh
I did shut down 4G, but I do work outside of the 4G network so my battery life comparison still holds water. Other than the 4G being turned off, my phone is set on Auto brightness. Everything else is running at the highest level.

Honestly, I am in a 3G only area and haven't noticed any difference with my signal strength. I live rural and at home only get 1-2 signal bars with db about -83 to -91 which is about what I had before.
In the nearest city, I get 5 full bars and db is about -53 , but never really looked at it before. I always had 4 full bars in the city though so that is the same. Haven't noticed a big diff with 3G either, I never lose it anyway so can't tell. Maybe when I travel more when the Weather warms up I will notice on my trips farther into the rural areas.
Wasn't really that big of a deal to go through the process and I just looked at it as practice if I ever have to RUU again.
I relocked and flashed the Firmware update and the first thing I noticed was how much louder it was speaking to someone on the phone. I actually had to turn the volume down a bit. I'm hoping this sound also translates to the speaker.
It's honestly a fairly easy process..took me like 20 minutes to do.
As For The Signal Strength Difference YES It Is Much Better. I Used To Have -75 -80dBm And Now It's Up To -65 -70dBm.

I'm definitely seeing better signal strength. It was prety good before but I'm getting strong 4g in some places where it had been spotty, so the radio is an improvement.
Not sure about the battery life yet. It seems about the same. I'm sitting at about 40% after 12hrs 40mins right now, but that's with 4g turned off most of the time and using juice defender. Not heavy usage at all-couple of phone calls, bunch of texts, some web stuff, words with friends and streamed a few songs (again, 4g off most of the time cuz none of that stuff needs it).
The five signal bars looks nice, but really doesn't affect anything important.
Overall happy with the update. Haven't unlocked/rooted yet so there weren't any hoops to jump through. Was waiting for S-Off but will probably go ahead and root soon because the bloatware is bugging me!

Am I the only one who updated the OTA on an unlocked bootloader? I didn't lock, update, unlock and I haven't noticed any issues.
At home I always had poor reception with my HTC inc only getting 1-2 bars at most and I returned a Galaxy Nexus since I was only getting 1 bar of 3g/4g. The Rezound however is 3 out of 5 and about -86 dBm. I know VZ likes to change the signal bars over time but at least its not flip flopping like the GN was doing.
So I have had the updated ota (hboot, radio, etc) since yesterday.
Fiancee drug me to the mall like usual today. Before the update I was unhappy with the Rezound for it did not get signal where my old HTC Incredible did. I spent many a shopping trip with no signal at all, and resorting to watching a movie while she did the changing room shuffle.
Well now after the OTA, I had signal throughout the entire mall, including 4g, in the exact same places as the Incredible did. This mall plays hell on signal (like im sure alot of big malls do.)
Just my .02
So it seems the radio is better at holding signal.
The real question... do I want to get the new hboot or not... New hboot means that s=off is even less likely.
Not too much of an issue with Dev unlock, but still prefered.

Nah, I had an unlocked bootloader as well. OTA went through just fine. It didn't care. Only issue I had was the frozen apps had to be restored before it would install.

Same here with the galaxy nexus, had to take it back because of the ridiculous signal flip flopping. After the radio update, I haven't noticed a difference yet, and I haven't placed any phone calls either to check the clarity. I live in a pretty strong signal area, but my signal is weak at work, going from 4g to 3g a lot. It'll get the real test tomorrow at work. Hope it's better.

You can download the android-info.txt file in the developer section and place that in the PH98IMG.zip file of the ROM you want to install (/kernel directory)... or you can take the boot.img from that zip file in the /kernel/ directory of that ROM and flash it in fastboot.. via:
ensure usb debugging mode is enabled/and have the boot.img/fastboot.exe in the same directory... open cmd prompt. cd to that directory. then type:
adb reboot bootloader
fastboot flash boot boot.img
then flash the rom in recovery.
a few more steps... or you could read the guide on hex-editing some file to change the version back to the old one ( i haven't tried this. others have and they've been successful)
Good luck.
