Kernel konfusion - Fascinate Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

I'm gonna flash dark revenge. Its kb01 based.. Can I flash other newer kernels? Or do I have to use a kb01 voodoo kernel? .. And does the kb01 kernel have voodoo sound and bln?
Edit: I mean eb01

Also, if I flash over sc 2.9.2 . Will I even need to flash a kernel?

Newer kernels (eb16, ec10) are fine, as are non-voodoo kernels.
If you want voodoo color, sound, and bln you need a source built kernel. Jt, imnuts, times_infinity, and nemesis2all have recent threads in the development forum containing kernels for touchwiz based roms (i.e. sc, darkrevenge ... basically anything except vanilla, cm, or miui) with these capabilities.
Superclean includes a stock kernel when flashed. You can flash another kernel afterwards if you wish.

Basically, all recent 'Touchwiz' named kernels in the development section are good to flash and are fully compatible with EB01. Just make sure to not flash 'AOSP' named kernels, as thats for CM, AOSP, and MIUI roms.

Thanks guys

[Q] ota froyo themes

do i have te run a custom rom to install themes?
i have ota ka6 froyo, with voodoo/rooted kernel
pretty much ..yes.. I think a deodex'd version of stock 2.2 allows you to theme. There is a deodex'd version of KA6 in the DEV section if you don't want custom.
do i have to flash a whole rom, or just the kernel?
the whole rom .....disable voodoo first and let it convert & reboot completely
so if i wanna run bionix-v i can just flash without disabling voodoo, since its already voodoo enabled? also would my flashed kernel cause any problems? or will the rom flash ka7 kernel?
It will flash the ka7 voodoo kernel

a question about superclean and updated kernel

hey people newbe here if i am running superclean 2.9.2 do i need to update my kernel to ec10 or is it included in superclean 2.9.2 already??? thanks
If you want a kernal built from the Mezmerize source then you will want to flash Jt's source kernal. The one included in Sc 2.9.2 is the leaked version. If you want voodoo sound and color get the source and flash it over SC.
If you don't want voodoo, then don't do as I have said.
k thank you.....
I would recommend flashing one of the newer kernels. They provide some nice enhancements.

SC 2.9 voo doo

Warning Noob Question:
So I flashed sc 2.9 nv. Does the sc 2.9v rom include a voo doo kernel or would I flash the kernel then flash the 2.9v rom? Also is this worth my time. Everything seems to run smooth as is. Will voo doo give me any noticable benefits?
Thanks
Superclean comes with either a voodoo kernel or a nonvoodoo kernel depending on which one you install. But in reality, its better to flash some of the custom Froyo kernels afterwards for a bit more umph.

I cant find one thats non touchwiz
Or imnuts' latest I think it's 330, works great for me
What advantage does that have over the standard eb01 voodoo kernel?
Well it looks like it doesn't matter because I cant flash them anyway. The only Kernels I can find wont flash using cwm 3. I cannot find an older version of cwm anywhere.
SC should have installed cwm 2.5 at the same Time. The fascinate still use cwm red, not orange.
Also I would install jt's new ec10 based voodoo kernel. Yes it's TW but it's stable and clean.

What happens if I flash a tw kernel with a rom that isnt?
voodoo kernel, IMO, since it utilizes the faster ext4 file system instead of the stock samsung one.
Ok so i tried flashing a bunch of different cwm versions and eventually started getting an error in cwm when i did a boot to recovery through Rom Manager. So i did the normal boot and when it pulled up it was red lettering and said CWM Voodoo lagfix recovery 2.5.x. So I figured while i was there i would try to flash the voodoo kernel in my sd card and it worked. Creepy robot voice and all. Now im wondering what I did and if maybe i screwed up something since my CWM 3 doesn't seem to be working.
You don't want CWM 3 to work. With the Fascinate, you need to stay on 2.5.x.x because CWM 3 is written for the newer edify scripting. Fascinate still uses amend scripting.
Awesome. Thanks for all the help. One more question. Is it a necessaty to download setcpu with voodoo? am i going to hurt my phone without it?
No it's not necessary, and it won't cause any damage. Over/under clocking your CPU can be of some benefit (performance vs. battery life when idle), but it is definately not mandatory.

I have a few questions about ED03

I searched the forums, but I am unsure where to find the information I am looking for. If anybody can point me in the right direction, i'd be very grateful.
Does the community rom work with ED03 (voodoo?) and does the kaos gingerbread CM7 work with that kernel, ED03 (voodoo?)
what is the difference between ED03 and ED01 and EA28?

Are you referring to the kernel or the modem? I don't think either ROM will work with a stock kernel, need custom kernels. There are no custom ED03 kernels that I know of.
ED03 and ED01 are the stock Froyo builds from verizon/samsung, EA28 is the last stock Eclair build from verizon/samsung. Not sure if that is what you were looking for in terms of the differences.
That is exactly what I was looking for! I just wasn't sure which modem to flash from this thread:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1097355
So it appears ED01 is the way to go for both chaos's cm7 and the community rom.

Yes, probably ED01 as the consensus seems to be there isn't any difference between the ED01 and ED03 modems. And in case you didn't know for sure (couldn't tell from the way your OP was worded) modems and ROMs are neither voodoo nor nonvoodoo. Kernels are either voodoo or nonvooodoo, and when included in a ROM, they are what make a ROM voodoo or nonvooodoo.
How come the community rom post says its for voodoo only, even though it apparently has an included kernel.

Because the included kernel is voodoo.

Here's a stupid question

After I rooted my phone, I simply installed Bionix 1.3 on it and that was it.
Do I NEED to install a kernel? What does that do exactly?
Everything has been running fine on my T-Mo Vibrant with the Bionix, but would the kernel help in any way?
Thanks.
Read the ROM OP. A kernel is usually prepackaged. Understand your ROM first, then start working with different kernels. Go to the Bible stickied in the forum and you'll see links to all the kernels.
Kernels come with all custom roms. With Bionix roms, they all come with a stock + Voodoo kernel. Its is a stock kernel that has the Voodoo lagfix built in and comes preactivated. Custom kernels have more tweaks and features than the stock voodoo kernels, like Voodoo sound, Overclocking and Undervolting abilities, and more. I advise you research the advantages and disadvantages of installing custom kernels. Until you have done your research about them, i suggest you stay on the stock+Voodoo kernel for now. Once you think you're ready for a custom kernel, please choose one that is up-to-date and was built to work on Froyo roms, like Bali, Bali-X, Bullet, and Immortality.
Okay, so my question then is, with the Bionix them, if I wanted to install Bali 1.8v
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1043947
Would I just do that via Clockwork Mod, then reinstall the Bionix ROM?
Or would that be too messy and possibly screw something up?
Thanks Mr. Apocalypse
You can flash kernels through CWR or SGS Kernel Flasher (in the market). Thing is, the I agree with Mr Apocalypse, you need to be reading and checking out things or your next post will be, "I bricked my phone, how to I fix it?"
This is directly from the OP of the Bionix ROM thread.
Optional Kernels:
NOTE:
Team Whiskey is not liable and takes absolutely no responsibility for any damages. Overclocking your phone adds additional stress to your hardware, so please understand the risks involved before you decide to overclock. Not all devices overclock the same, so please test the different clock speeds and see which one works best for you. Many times, certain devices will not accept an overclock at all. If you fall into this category, you will have to flash back to a stock kernel.
(all of these kernels have been compiled from official Vibrant 2.2 source code. They are include voodoo sound, voodoo color, and bln support. Bionix-v 1.3.1 already included the necessary apps for these features. Test these optional kernels and see which one works best for you!)

After you flash Bionix, then flash Bali. You can do that in ClockWorkMod Recovery or SGS Kernel Flasher, i prefer to use CWM Recovery because sometimes the app doesnt install some special files that are needed for things like BLN to work. But either way is ok, just dont reflash the rom afterward or you'll be back on the stock+Voodoo kernel
Bali is a great choice, drhonk builds those rock solid.
