Checked that, won't work since Vlingo isn't set as a default.
Under Multitouch keyboard settings there's an option for picking between the two, but not on the Swype keyboard settings.
Noticed the same issue too. Dumb question but I assume Vlingo is bloatware? any use for it? Was one program it wouldn't let me remove.
I used it on previous phones that didn't have good speech recognition but with google voice actions vlingo doesn't have as much use

I think the Swype keyboard that is included with the atrix is hard coded to use Vlingo.
This is the kind of OEM BS that makes me wish the Atrix was a pure google device.
What applications are you getting to work for the vtab?
I can get yahoo messenger to work but cant download the plugins for video
I cant get the buttons to show up for skype.
Trillian says its loading and signs me out of yahoo but doesnt finish.
I use trillian with google, facebook, and msn with no issues. I also use the new google voice+sprint for texting/chat.

How did you get Google voice working? When I install it, I go through the setup process, and when I get to the section about setting up voicemail (which obviously won't work) I get an error.
I believe the choices on the error are "cancel" (which let's you try again, to no avail obviously) or "skip". When I press skip, it just dumps me back to the same page of the setup I'm on (voicemail), but both the back and forward buttons are greyed out...
Now, the funny thing is that Google Voice is now running! If I get a text, it pops up in the notification bar. But if I want to go into Google Voice manually and write a text, I can't because I can't get past the setup process...very annoying.
I also use Google Voice on a real phone (HTC Magic on t-Mobile) using the same Google account....would that make a difference?
someone did a mod to the voice .apk, I don't remember which forum I got it from. I will put it on my dropbox and post the link here in a few. The modified .apk allows you to skip the phone settings part where you got stuck.
update:
I didn't think I would find it this quick on my computer. I uninstalled google voice then reinstalled using this one and it works like a champ

Thanks, that worked perfectly! I wasn't able to uninstall the old version (said it was a system app, not uninstallable), so I installed the new one right on top of the old one, no trouble.
You can also just upgrade to the current Google Voice in the market. The skip button works fine in it.

sweet, then I'll pull my super secret dropbox version off.
Google has very silently pushed a new app to all android devices. Its called Google settings. Now I love android but this shouldnt be allowed it does not seem to do harm but lets let the devs see
Sent from my EVO using xda app-developers app
They didn't do a good job with it since it's obviously in the app drawer for all to see
The advice is free....the bandwidth, not so much
You can disable it by unchecking all of the read write execute in es file explorer. Or if you find an older version of the android market that is compatible with our phones. And the worse thing is it's not in the market at all it's just there.
I Personally think forcing a phone to silently install an app is wrong. Had it been a usual update that would have been smarter.
It lets you control all the google settings from one place. I for one think that's smart. Who cares if it's in your app drawer, hide it if you don't like it.
What version Google Play adds this? I haven't received it yet. I'm 100% stock and unrooted. My issue now is all of a sudden I am receiving double notifications from all my apps except gmail.
Edit. Never mind I have the app now just checked. Now if the double notifications would stop.

The app doesn't do anything else other existing apps were not already doing. It simply aggregates all the Google settings into one cohesive place (although I feel that the 'account sync' area is better suited for this). It doesn't require any special permissions that are not already used by other Google apps.
If you do not want it either hide it like others have said or simply unlink your Google account from the device seeing that the only thing the app does is put the settings in one place and creates a platform to be able to give you MORE control over what other apps can access as far as Play Services functionality is concerned. This app is very welcomed.
Also if you are against them updating stuff without your consent, root and remove the play store -- that updates automatically as well. You're using a device that uses Google Apps as it's back end, this is expected.

See the play store is fine. when that updates, i get a notification of new terms and conditions, as well as it only happens with new OS releases or when i open the actual app. not radomly while im on the john or asleep.
Wasn't really a secret, they have been promoting for awhile now and there have been a few articles pre and post. It just compiles settings for their apps.

Did you actually read the terms you agree to every update? Because section 3 - Updates of the Play Store ToC state:
You may need to install updates to Google Play or related Google software that we introduce from time to time to use Google Play and to access or download Products. Products originating from Google may communicate with Google servers from time to time to check for available updates to the Products and to the functionality of Google Play, such as bug fixes, patches, enhanced functions, missing plug-ins and new versions (collectively, "Updates"). By using the Google Play store and installing these Products, you agree to such automatically requested and received Updates.

Emphasis mine. Also, ignoring all that, what difference does it make if it asks you to agree? Your point was that you didn't want apps to update themselves. The play store does that, ergo it was a valid comparison.
As a matter of fact I would be more paranoid about the play store because those updates usually have new functionality. All this does is literally link you to setting screens that were already on your device and adds an area to give YOU more control cover what third party apps can access.
Looking at the dissection of the app on the link provided shows exactly what the app does. Which, by the way, the Play Services has been doing this ever since the play store launched with Android 2.2 and above (Source - Automatic Updates).
So my original advice stands, if you do not want this to continue, delete the Play Store.
TL;DR:
Play store agreement allows and makes it clear that automatic updates will happen.
App doesn't add new permissions, it links to existing menus.
This has been happening since Android 2.2 and it's nothing new.
Only way to stop it is to delete the Play Store.

Well, you didn't really choose Google Play. It's preinstalled on your phone when you buy it. The fact that the "Settings" app was pushed to the phone automatically, and is only used to change settings for Google Apps, there's really not an alarm for concern. You actually agreed to it when you bought the phone and accepted the terms when setting it up.
Glad to see this thread. I was visiting someone yesterday and messing with their gnex (I maintain it for her, in a sense) and saw this green Google settings and started freaking out cuz it was unknown where it came from, and I could not find it in either /data/app or /system/app and therefore could not remove. Also, about the same time, the email app would no longer login or sync, saying invalid password. I though it possibly related, thought Google setting was something malicious. Now I know it's legit :good:
Thanks

Can anyone else confirm that the G-Talk app no longer works/signs in? Whenever I try signing in, all of my contacts and my own contact are permanently grayed out, despite having internet connectivity (tested both over wifi and cellular). When I tried installing Hangouts, this issue was no longer present, Really sucks because Hangouts is a major step backward from Google Talk for obvious reasons (no status messages, shows people who are away/busy as offline, bloated layout, bloated contacts list, doesn't show online status of people you are chatting with in same window, generally confusing UI, etc.)
Tried on Samsung SM-N900T (T-Mobile Note 3) but I do not believe this issue is device specific.
Thanks.
This is currently happening to me, although it works on a new install of my current ROM. This makes me wonder if a Play Services update (or similar service) killed it intentionally. I'm going to let everything update after a new install, while it's working, and see if it dies.
I'm seeing the same thing. It works if I update to hangouts.... ugh
So now I guess our next step is to figure out what service is killing Talk and revert that as well. Because as I said this works on a new install of my ROM that was built before whatever was pushed.
I don't have a problem with you updating an app - but if you're going to force me to use the updated version, don't strip it of the features that made it great! Looks like Google has officially gone astray from their old slogan of "Don't be evil."

I found the culprit. It's Google Play services, which was updated Nov 5.
Uninstalling the update gives me gtalk connection back, but maps doesn't like it.
Looks like we need to find the apk before the update and prevent it from autoupdating
I can confirm that uninstalling the Google Play Services updates allows Talk to work fine again (Nexus 4). Also that some functions like "improved location" in Maps are asking for this update back.
What I don't really get is that I never enable auto-updates, only pick them manually, and that Talk suddenly stopped working last night. Even though the last Google play services update i did was at least a few weeks ago...sleeper feature? Or is Google Play Services updated anyway in the background? I'm not sure that finding the version prior to the one published on Nov 6th will fix the issue, at least without any drawback...
Google and its f*cked up Hangouts are really pissing me off. Forced updates, forced apps, I'm starting to feel like I'm dealing with Apple here.

Agreed. I don't mind even mind the update though. The reason there is forcing involved is because Google removed Talk's most important features and expects us to just deal with it. If things keep going this way, my next phone may very well be an iPhone or a Windows phone. I can't support a company that forces its customers to use featureless junk. Google needs to realize that while it still has the largest chunk of the market, there are two other major players, and they are not invincible by any means.
I'm using imo.im, at least for the time being.
Same here, I´ve noticed that Google Play Services update is the bad guy. The Hangouts (crap) works after the update. I removed the Google play services updates and gtalk worked again bit now the triangle with the exclamation about google play services keeps anoying me.
I´ve noticed on GPS (google play services) update, theere are two new permission requests and one of them is turn on/off network...
I´m sticking with gtalk and the triangle error
Sorry for my english, is not my native language.
Update: After disabling google+ notifications, the triangle on status bar has gone
Ugh. Kit Kat came with this all pre-loaded. I did install the Talk APK but yeah, it can't login. Not sure what I can force-downgrade to get it to work without breaking stuff too badly. Anyone have any ideas?
I really, really can't stand Hangouts. It's not an IM program.
On my Nexus 4, reverting Google play services allows me to use Talk again, but I noticed I am now unable to send mails with the Gmail app. I can receive just fine, but no way to send...anyone having this too (with the factory version of gplay services)?
Also the network icon constantly gets grayed out. It seems to be working fine... Strange though.
I update the gplay services again, no Gmail is too much to ask for me.
I'll use another messenger while waiting for a new gplay services update to come out. Or maybe waiting to get an previous apk that keeps the overall functions working just fine.
I remember when I would proudly feel satisfied with having chosen Google and Android over the rest. Hm not so much today. Wouldn't really quit android, but damn I hate seeing it weakened by those socially-networked-marketing-alterations.
If anyone has a decent backup for gplay services that allows talk AND the rest to work fine, I'll be interested! Gotta say I have the previous version (the one right before the Nov 5th update) in a nandroid bkp, and somehow Talk doesn't work anymore with it.

First off, I have suffered from the same issue but found a solution. Secondly everyone should be aware that it depends on the Android version you are currently running if the Google Play Services can be downgraded without an issue. The best version that works with talk, maps & gmail is 4.0.31... if anyone needs a copy let me know! -RFE
I can confirm this issue... It is rather frustrating that I now have to use hangouts.

I have the Samsung Galaxy S2 and the S4. On my S2 Google Talk works and on my S4 it doesn't. The both have the updated version of Google Play Service. So as for me that's not the solution.
I'm still trying to figure out a way for Talk to work on my S4.
Hangouts has grown on me. It was a bit bulky at first, but the UI is the same as Gmail and the new email app for 4.4 so I've gotten used to it. Plus now it can handle SMS messaging too its essential.

It just doesn't do what I want it to do. I don't want all my contacts mixed in the same basket. IM contacts, email contacts, gmail contacts and phone/SMS contacts are NOT the same pool and I don't want them to be in the same pool. I want to be able to logout of IM and have people in the IM pool NOT BE ABLE TO CONTACT ME, for example - and right now I don't even have that anymore even if I never ever use Hangouts (which I don't). People can IM me when I'm offline and it goes to gmail and sits there for a week or two until I open gmail.
Again, I have no problem with Hangouts as The Big Social Integrator, but they should've left Talk out there for those of us who do not WANT it all integrated.

Contacted VZW support because after the OTA Kitkat update (stock ROM) on my SCH-i545, using the keyboard mic suddenly doesn't pause my music (Play Music or Pandora). All previous Android versions on two phones have paused music when using the mic for voice-to-text.
VZW rep "doesn't think" it's supposed to work that way anyway. Voice-to-text works (if I stop any music manually) and the music apps work, so no problem. (Arrogant bastard.)
So, can I please get any of you with a stock S4 running Kitkat to test whether when playing music in Google Play Music or Pandora, and clicking the mic button on the Samsung keyboard in the stock SMS app, the music pauses until you're done with voice-to-text?? The VZW rep couldn't say with authority whether it was supposed to work or not, and seemed reluctant to find out. If it works for a number of you out there, I want to tell VZW this.
Note: In Settings under My device/Language and input, I have the Samsung keyboard and Google voice typing enabled, the latter of which provides the mic button on the keyboard.

k1mu - Interestingly, the music does stop for me for a voice search in Google Search. What happens if you're playing music and hit the mic button on the Samsung keyboard in the SMS app?
So I just reset the phone. Didn't sign in with my Google account. Tested, and music DOES pause when I use the keyboard microphone button in SMS! Now to reinstall apps ONE AT A TIME until I find the offending app. Grrr!
Found the culprit! Factory Reset phone. Did not allow phone to reinstall my downloaded apps. Updated default apps until one of them broke the function. Google Search broke it. Will not allow Google Search to update from now on.

Yeah, thanks! Tested this on a coworker's phone. Identical VZW SCH-i545 with stock OTA 4.4.2. He had the Google Search update and his keyboard mic button DID pause music... until he put the Google Search widget on his desktop. Once he did that, or used Search, it broke the pause function. I guess the issue doesn't show up unless you have the widget on your desktop or use Google Search. I have the widget and use it, so that's an issue for me.
Posted in Google's Google Search forum. I guess we'll see if someone at Google picks up on that...
I downgraded to "Google Search 3.2.17.1009776" and problem solved. Music now pauses when using the Google Voice Input. There's an apk repository here on androiddrawer.

You need to go to Settings -> Application Manager and find "Google Search". Hit the "Uninstall Updates" button. To be safe, I would clear the app's data, too. Then you can install the older version.
Be sure the find the Google Search page in the Play Store and turn off automatic updates.
Thank you for the quick reply, however I tried that before posting ...there is no "uninstall updates" tab
