[Q] Can someone test whether keyboard mic pauses music, please? - Verizon Samsung Galaxy S 4

This is a follow up to this post of mine: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?p=52821145
Contacted VZW support because after the OTA Kitkat update (stock ROM) on my SCH-i545, using the keyboard mic suddenly doesn't pause my music (Play Music or Pandora). All previous Android versions on two phones have paused music when using the mic for voice-to-text.
VZW rep "doesn't think" it's supposed to work that way anyway. Voice-to-text works (if I stop any music manually) and the music apps work, so no problem. (Arrogant bastard.)
So, can I please get any of you with a stock S4 running Kitkat to test whether when playing music in Google Play Music or Pandora, and clicking the mic button on the Samsung keyboard in the stock SMS app, the music pauses until you're done with voice-to-text?? The VZW rep couldn't say with authority whether it was supposed to work or not, and seemed reluctant to find out. If it works for a number of you out there, I want to tell VZW this.
Note: In Settings under My device/Language and input, I have the Samsung keyboard and Google voice typing enabled, the latter of which provides the mic button on the keyboard.

I'm running Kit Kat factory stock (NC5) rooted.
With Play Music running, I opened google search and hit the mic button. The music paused while I spoke.

Thanks, k1mu. I use it in the SMS app, and it's always stopped music from playing while the mic was active. Coworker here with my identical phone/OS tested and it stopped, too. Stupid VZW rep just didn't want to deal with this one-off issue.

k1mu - Interestingly, the music does stop for me for a voice search in Google Search. What happens if you're playing music and hit the mic button on the Samsung keyboard in the SMS app?

So I just reset the phone. Didn't sign in with my Google account. Tested, and music DOES pause when I use the keyboard microphone button in SMS! Now to reinstall apps ONE AT A TIME until I find the offending app. Grrr!

Found the culprit! Factory Reset phone. Did not allow phone to reinstall my downloaded apps. Updated default apps until one of them broke the function. Google Search broke it. Will not allow Google Search to update from now on.

Yeah, thanks! Tested this on a coworker's phone. Identical VZW SCH-i545 with stock OTA 4.4.2. He had the Google Search update and his keyboard mic button DID pause music... until he put the Google Search widget on his desktop. Once he did that, or used Search, it broke the pause function. I guess the issue doesn't show up unless you have the widget on your desktop or use Google Search. I have the widget and use it, so that's an issue for me.
Posted in Google's Google Search forum. I guess we'll see if someone at Google picks up on that...

I downgraded to "Google Search 3.2.17.1009776" and problem solved. Music now pauses when using the Google Voice Input. There's an apk repository here on androiddrawer.

Thank you for tracking down the cause of the issue and the fix. I was just trying to figure it out on my VZW LG G2 when I ran across this thread.
Do we know if there is an entry in the Google issue tracker for this bug? I would love to be able to update Google Search at some point.

Bump. Problem still exists, and I can't update Google Search without breaking the Voice Input keyboard.
Anybody find an issue tracker? I'd like to spread visibility of this issue. I've sent feedback through the app.

I never was able to find a reference to this issue on any of the tracker sites, but I wasn't sure where to look. I am like you, though, I haven't been able to update Google Search. I hope the next Google Search update fixes this problem, but I am skeptical.

Just as an update, the newest version of Google search doesn't fix this issue.
That is the update released June 25.

You need to go to Settings -> Application Manager and find "Google Search". Hit the "Uninstall Updates" button. To be safe, I would clear the app's data, too. Then you can install the older version.
Be sure the find the Google Search page in the Play Store and turn off automatic updates.

Thank you for the quick reply, however I tried that before posting ...there is no "uninstall updates" tab

[Q] Remove specific app from Play Store list

Hi,
I'd like to know if there's any way I can remove an specific app from the Play Store list, without uninstalling it. Or if there's a way to remove this app from the apps that are checked for updates.
The reason is that I have a Motorola Defy+ and I like the stock music player, which is just fine. There's an update called Tune Wiki which is, in my opinion, pure crap. So in order to install updates of all my other apps I have to install one by one, because I can't choose the option "update all" since it would update the music player too.
Hope I was concise and clear. Thanks in advance for your help.

Well. Benn testing this issue for ya here on my end. I am on the updated version. And sorry....no you can not remove installed apps. I may be wrong...but I can not find any way to make it more customized.

What apps (htc, tmobile, etc) are safe to disable on phone?

would appreciate any advice on this by those who've started to experiment.

You can easily disable all of the "T-Mobile" apps: T-Mobile My Account, T-Mobile Name ID, T-Mobile TV
I've also disabled TalkBack, Rescue, Polaris Office, News & Weather, Lookout Security,Kid Mode, Hangouts, Google Play Music, Google Play Movies & TV, Google Play Magazines.
As far as the HTC applications, I haven't began to disable any of them yet...
Thanks for your post, I was able to disable some more apps

I don't see, "or uninstalled" anywhere here.
So whats wrong with Google Music?
Do semantics really matter? And does it really matter whether or not I said it in my original post or if I clarified in my next post that it was either disabled OR "uninstalled"? The point is these apps that I mentioned are no longer present blaring in my face whenever I access my phone.
What's wrong with Google Music? Nothing -- if you want to use it. Me, personally? Google Music is a subscription-based service and it is something that, to me, is not worth it's value monthly.

[Q] Google Talk App Dead?

Can anyone else confirm that the G-Talk app no longer works/signs in? Whenever I try signing in, all of my contacts and my own contact are permanently grayed out, despite having internet connectivity (tested both over wifi and cellular). When I tried installing Hangouts, this issue was no longer present, Really sucks because Hangouts is a major step backward from Google Talk for obvious reasons (no status messages, shows people who are away/busy as offline, bloated layout, bloated contacts list, doesn't show online status of people you are chatting with in same window, generally confusing UI, etc.)
Tried on Samsung SM-N900T (T-Mobile Note 3) but I do not believe this issue is device specific.
Thanks.
This is currently happening to me, although it works on a new install of my current ROM. This makes me wonder if a Play Services update (or similar service) killed it intentionally. I'm going to let everything update after a new install, while it's working, and see if it dies.
I'm seeing the same thing. It works if I update to hangouts.... ugh
So now I guess our next step is to figure out what service is killing Talk and revert that as well. Because as I said this works on a new install of my ROM that was built before whatever was pushed.
I don't have a problem with you updating an app - but if you're going to force me to use the updated version, don't strip it of the features that made it great! Looks like Google has officially gone astray from their old slogan of "Don't be evil."

What phone/version are you using?
---------- Post added at 03:22 AM ---------- Previous post was at 03:02 AM ----------
I found the culprit. It's Google Play services, which was updated Nov 5.
Uninstalling the update gives me gtalk connection back, but maps doesn't like it.
Looks like we need to find the apk before the update and prevent it from autoupdating
I can confirm that uninstalling the Google Play Services updates allows Talk to work fine again (Nexus 4). Also that some functions like "improved location" in Maps are asking for this update back.
What I don't really get is that I never enable auto-updates, only pick them manually, and that Talk suddenly stopped working last night. Even though the last Google play services update i did was at least a few weeks ago...sleeper feature? Or is Google Play Services updated anyway in the background? I'm not sure that finding the version prior to the one published on Nov 6th will fix the issue, at least without any drawback...
Google and its f*cked up Hangouts are really pissing me off. Forced updates, forced apps, I'm starting to feel like I'm dealing with Apple here.

Agreed. I don't mind even mind the update though. The reason there is forcing involved is because Google removed Talk's most important features and expects us to just deal with it. If things keep going this way, my next phone may very well be an iPhone or a Windows phone. I can't support a company that forces its customers to use featureless junk. Google needs to realize that while it still has the largest chunk of the market, there are two other major players, and they are not invincible by any means.
I'm using imo.im, at least for the time being.
Same here, I´ve noticed that Google Play Services update is the bad guy. The Hangouts (crap) works after the update. I removed the Google play services updates and gtalk worked again bit now the triangle with the exclamation about google play services keeps anoying me.
I´ve noticed on GPS (google play services) update, theere are two new permission requests and one of them is turn on/off network...
I´m sticking with gtalk and the triangle error
Sorry for my english, is not my native language.
Update: After disabling google+ notifications, the triangle on status bar has gone
Ugh. Kit Kat came with this all pre-loaded. I did install the Talk APK but yeah, it can't login. Not sure what I can force-downgrade to get it to work without breaking stuff too badly. Anyone have any ideas?
I really, really can't stand Hangouts. It's not an IM program.
On my Nexus 4, reverting Google play services allows me to use Talk again, but I noticed I am now unable to send mails with the Gmail app. I can receive just fine, but no way to send...anyone having this too (with the factory version of gplay services)?
Also the network icon constantly gets grayed out. It seems to be working fine... Strange though.
I update the gplay services again, no Gmail is too much to ask for me.
I'll use another messenger while waiting for a new gplay services update to come out. Or maybe waiting to get an previous apk that keeps the overall functions working just fine.
I remember when I would proudly feel satisfied with having chosen Google and Android over the rest. Hm not so much today. Wouldn't really quit android, but damn I hate seeing it weakened by those socially-networked-marketing-alterations.
If anyone has a decent backup for gplay services that allows talk AND the rest to work fine, I'll be interested! Gotta say I have the previous version (the one right before the Nov 5th update) in a nandroid bkp, and somehow Talk doesn't work anymore with it.

First off, I have suffered from the same issue but found a solution. Secondly everyone should be aware that it depends on the Android version you are currently running if the Google Play Services can be downgraded without an issue. The best version that works with talk, maps & gmail is 4.0.31... if anyone needs a copy let me know! -RFE
I can confirm this issue... It is rather frustrating that I now have to use hangouts.

I have the Samsung Galaxy S2 and the S4. On my S2 Google Talk works and on my S4 it doesn't. The both have the updated version of Google Play Service. So as for me that's not the solution.
I'm still trying to figure out a way for Talk to work on my S4.
Hangouts has grown on me. It was a bit bulky at first, but the UI is the same as Gmail and the new email app for 4.4 so I've gotten used to it. Plus now it can handle SMS messaging too its essential.

It just doesn't do what I want it to do. I don't want all my contacts mixed in the same basket. IM contacts, email contacts, gmail contacts and phone/SMS contacts are NOT the same pool and I don't want them to be in the same pool. I want to be able to logout of IM and have people in the IM pool NOT BE ABLE TO CONTACT ME, for example - and right now I don't even have that anymore even if I never ever use Hangouts (which I don't). People can IM me when I'm offline and it goes to gmail and sits there for a week or two until I open gmail.
Again, I have no problem with Hangouts as The Big Social Integrator, but they should've left Talk out there for those of us who do not WANT it all integrated.

[Q] [Help] Google Now won't launch music app

When I try to use Google Now voice to listen to music i.e. "Ok, Google, play ..." it tries to launch the music player but it just flashes on the screen then it goes back to Google Now or if I open Google Now from the music app it goes back to that but doesn't play the song.
If I tell it to play a song I don't have or mess up a title it opens the app's search with no results.
Anybody else have this issue?
Any fix?
Any troubleshooting/debugging tips?
I also tried Play Music but it gives me the instant mix error and I deleted the system app and reinstalled it as a user app so I can't remove the updates.
I have tried searching for this issue but it is hard to word specifically enough

I would first try going to application manager and pressing the button that is to the left of the home button and click reset app preferences.

That is not what it does. It removes what programs you open your galaxy with. Like it's supposed to popup saying what you want to open the file in.
But if you are having trouble, I would either no-wipe your phone with odin or full-wipe it with odin.
Note that this resets everything so make sure that you backup to your sd card before you do this.

Help! Latest Google Now / Google App crashes

Hi,
I installed the latest Google App / Google Now Search which was released last week (I think) on my Verizon Galaxy s4. When I go into Google Now now, I can say, "OK Google" and it begins to listen for my voice as usual. I can say something (it doesn't really matter what command I issue) like "What time is it in New York City?" and then it correctly prints out my words on the screen, and then beeps as if it's ready to go do the search or execute the command.
Then it crashes.
Every time, all the time. I've cleared data, I've force-stopped the app, I've rebooted, and even uninstalled the update to prove that it worked before the update. It did.
Any thoughts or suggestions from anyone? Thank you!
Lots of bugs in the new Google search and gnl. I haven't updated. If you have tibu you can maybe roll back or search around for older versions.
Also 406 shout out.

I may have to try that... I actually uninstalled and went back to version 1 and the search worked again. But then when I would do something like look at Google Maps and click the Navigation icon, it says "no application for this command." Whatever.
I did notice the Voice Search app itself works just fine. I can't just get it to work when I launch it via "Ok Google."
406 Shout out to you, too! In BZN here.

So I updated and hated it. Even before the last update I was having a hard time having ok Google pull up map(app) results. So I was looking to reverse the update with Titanium Backup. No luck there, it will only restore data.
This worked though - go to app manager, go over to all apps, select both Google app and Google Now Launcher and "uninstall updates". GNL will throw an error about Google search when you do this. I then went to the play store and updated ONLY the Google now Launcher, and left the Google app unupdated. Everything is back to normal!
"Ok Google" works, I have app results in my searches, I have the transparent backgrounds in the search bar and app drawer as well.
