Specs
-i have a vibrant for tmobile.
-rooted.
-phone has to be 2 months old, hardly used. still had stickers on camera.
my questions
-if i use the unroot technique posted earlier, will i have any problems with tmobile and unroot? show any signs?
-does any one have tmobile thats done an exchange under warranty with a rooted/unrooted vibrant??
-i have a dent on the chrome frame around the screen, nothing else...will this effect the warranty?
that dent pissed me off, ive been USING the phone for like 5 days? i havent been on this forum long.
so i wanna use a warranty exchange, say my mms or something is acting silly, and get a new one.

Buy a phone case. That should fix it.
If you are going to scam them, then nobody here can change your mind. Same goes for people who brick their phone, and do a warranty exchange. In the long run, it hurts everyone, causes prices to go up, and causes more stringent return policies.
If you go through with your scam, why don't you spend 16 bucks on a t-mobile silicon case for the replacement vibrant, so next time you don't dent your phone.

ps... to answer your question, I think using ODIN with the 512 pit and tar should get you back to stock. Not sure though if they can tell you rooted before, ask someone else.

Unrooting your phone will keep your warranty intact, but that dent (depending how big it is) is not covered with warranty because its physical damage. When they receive your phone they inspect it and you can get charged an out of warranty fee which is near $250-300ish for a vibrant. T-Mobile will not let you dispute this charge either because all the phones are individually inspected.
Also, claiming an issue with the mms is not the best reason for a warranty exchange because mms issues are network related 9 times out of 10.

When I had a blackberry. I told tmobile some issues I had w the phone and thhey had no problem sending me a refurbished phone.

I would say that returning a phone that works fine because of a dent is wasteful. Buy a case from amazon for a couple of bucks and it'll cover the dent just fine. And if dents and scratches are going to bother you that much then take better care of it.

Root/unroot to exchange phone with tmobile
Just do it and see what happens. Let us know. I had a problem with a phone that the USB plugged in kept intermittently come on. Not good called TMobile has a new phone in three days. But i had a legitimation problem not a scratch or bump.. I don't think TMobile will exchange. Unroot phone then go in sd and delete update or anything that shows Young tried to put a rom on phone. Mer I'de get a cover.

I did a stupid, stupid mistake of pulling the USB out as Odin crashed whilst performing the pit file update. Now, my phone won't turn on at all. I mean, AT ALL.
I've done everything I could.
I've ordered a USB Jig from Amazon, which I'm hoping MIGHT do the trick. However, I know "mobiletechvideos" offer their JTAG repair service if the Jig doesn't work.
1. Are they reliable at all? All their reviews are 5stars, like 49 out of 49.
2. I have warranty on this phone, but I've rooted it. Will Samsung bother with my problem or will they not mind/care?
3. Shall I send it to Samsung or shall I send it to Mobile Tech Videos?

Jig might work (tho very unlikely; I'm being honest with you here. But still try it anyway). Cross everything it does.
1) They're members here (I recall seeing posts by the guy who runs it on here months ago), and I've seen one or two people on here who have used them successfully (tho I'm sure there's probably a lot more than that).
2) That's the luck of the draw. Nobody on here can answer that for you. In the 8 mths I've been coming here, for people who haven't been able to go back to stock/reset the flash counter & sent their phone into Samsung/an authorised repairer it seems to be about 50/50. That is, half seemed to have been denied warranty service (which is quite reasonable; messing with the phone does void your warranty) and half have got warranty service because whomever fixed it either didn't care or couldn't tell it had been messed with.
3) Should you send it to Samsung or have it JTAG'd ? Having it JTAG'd will almost certainly be cheaper than having it repaired by Samsung outside warranty. There is always a possibility that it can't be JTAG'd (we've seen people on here who have sent phones to be JTAG'd & for whatever reason it couldn't be done). What you could do is send it to Samsung (play dumb obviously; the less you say the better), and if they say they're not going to fix it under warranty (you've got no comeback on this btw, so don't bother arguing the point), ask them for a quote. If it's cheaper than the JTAG repair, get them to fix it. If it's not, have it JTAG'd.
Essentially, whether or not you get it done under warranty will probably be determined by how messed up the NAND is after you pulled the plug. So yeah, send it in & pray ;-)

Thank you for that response. Very helpful! According to a currency converter, I'll be looking towards £40 to have it JTAG'd and for them to send it back.
However, I'm not too sure how much it'll cost for me to send it. The SII box isn't that heavy lol.

If you look at what they (MobileTech) charge you for return international shipping (this is obviously on top of the cost of the repair; read this carefully), that should give you a bit of a guide as to what it will cost you to post the phone to the US from the UK. So yeah, with the exchange rate nicely in your favour I think you'll find them repairing it will be much cheaper than Samsung repairing it outside warranty.
Good luck, and post your experience back on here when you're done. Will be good for other people in the same situation to have a recent reference/someone who has been in the same situation.

I dont think the Jig will work , unless you have a gingerbread OS .. deffo wont work on ICS ive tried it ,, you should have the option to boot the phone in two ways ,, which im sure if you look at the tech side on this site you should get all the help you need ,..,, i dont know how true it actually is but ive been told its near on impossible to hard brick a SGS2 phone .. but do have a good look around to find the solution.
can you charge your phone? i believe i had in the past not been able to boot my phone no matter what i did... until i plugged it in so that the "charging" icon showed up and then I could connect it to my computer usb
Near impossible to hard brick an SGS2 is it ? Then how do you explain the half a dozen or so (on an average week; sometimes more) hard bricks we see here in Q&A ? It can & does happen. It is far from impossible.
The OP knows his options, the jig was suggested as a last resort which is pretty standard on here regardless of anything else. On (very) rare occasions it has been known to get a phone that otherwise can't be made to get into download/recovery modes or boot into download mode. It was made clear to & acknowledged by the OP this was unlikely to work.
The OP has a handle on the situation (this thread was done & sorted a week ago). He understands the phone is only going to be fixed by JTAG. The issue was whether he got Samsung to do it or a 3rd party repairer.
The one thing that has me curious tho; why quote my post ?

So, first of all, sorry for not replying or anything, I actually hadn't signed on XDA ever since I had my phone bricked.
Good news, I got my SII back today from T-Mobile, fully repaired!
I ordered the Jig, didn't work. So..
I bought the phone off a friend, who had got it on a contract from T-Mobile, so he did me the favour in ringing T-Mobile and inquiring whether the phone was eligible by their repair service, which it was. The phone was sent around the 6-9th of July, (free post, they sent a carrier parcel bag all for free) and it come back today.
So, if anyone manages to hard-brick their phone, you know my method works
I hard bricked my S2 as well (sad times) but all I did was ring my service provider and they fixed it for me. They said the hardware was faulty and fixed it for free!

Hey guys, sorry for another topic, however I actually do know what is wrong with my phone and know it needs to be JTAG repaired..
however... I was wondering if anyone knew the root cause of this (no pun intended).. I was flashing JellyBam v5.0 (custom [email protected]~) and mid installation, phone froze, powered down and is now bricked. Any reason why it would do that mid install? Battery was 95%+

He did. Regardless, none of that info would be relevant/useful in this case anyway, phone's borked.
@OP - Honestly, that's impossible to say. Something hardware related in the phone, something simple like the battery contacts not making a proper connection, something on the PC side even (temporary issue with the connection b/w the PC & phone) ? The possibilities are endless.
Have it looked at by a JTAG repairer & if that can't be done, maybe try and source a motherboard from a donor phone (broken screen or whatever). That will be the cheaper option than having Samsung replace the MB if it can't be JTAG'd, even if you pay a local mobile repair shop to install the 'new' MB (if you're not confident enough to DIY).

Yeah you are right it could be anything happening within the phone without my knowledge, luckily phone was connected to mains when i was flashing using CWM so no problems there, but i don't think i will find the reason why it actually happened as you said the possibilities are endless
I'm trying to get in touch with a place that does JTAG repairs at the moment, however im just scared they say it can't be done. Havent really got the money to fork out for a new MB. I bought the phone second hand last year (april) where i was told it was only 3-4weeks old however had no old purchase details. Is there any way for me to check if the warranty is still valid or does it become void after resale? Thanks
There used to be an online warranty checker on one of Samsung's regional websites (can't remember which, maybe someone else does ?) where you could put the serial number in & get the warranty end date, but I recall people on here saying it either went away or didn't work anymore at some point last year.
But I doubt you'd get warranty service without the original receipt anyway, and even if you had it, I'm not sure the warranty is transferable beyond the original purchaser (Someone else please correct me if they know of cases where the warranty has been honoured regardless, I realise this might vary from country to country).
Unless the phone has physical damage as opposed to the NAND simply being scrambled beyond all recognition which normally happens when a flash goes wrong like that, you'd probably expect it to be JTAG'able.
If it's not, as I said in my PP, a board from a 'donor' phone would be much cheaper to both buy/have installed than paying a Samsung authorised repairer to put a new MB in (apparently they charge in the vicinity of half what a new phone would cost retail).

I think you're right on that one, if i don't even have proof of purchase then I don't think warranty will be valid. Thanks anyway on that behalf. Yeah it is only that one issue nothing else is wrong physically so i am hoping for the best and do believe a JTAG should get me out of this situation without a problem (fingers crossed).
On the topic of a replacement motherboard thank you very much for pointing me in the right direction if JTAG fails. Buying a cheap phone as such is a great idea and taking a working motherboard for a lot cheaper than RRP is wonderful.

It happened to both of us whilst installing JellyBam v5, so surely there must be a problem with the ROM? We encountered the exact same issue 100% and are both left in the same position now due to the ROM

I have the exact same problem yeah, but i know a friend of mine who used the same ROM as we did.. it worked for him though
Always try a Jig before JTAG, no harm there.
If warrantu isn't voided, make sure it's really bricked so you can claim it with the "I was updating it via wifi and dropped dead" rutine.

Something very strange, I checked the time on the phone while I was seating on my car, then I came home, and when I sat on my desk the phone was completely off. At first I though it might be an empty battery, so I plugged on the wall charger, but NOTHING happened. I tried the charger on another phone and worked, so the problem was the phone.
Took out the battery, put it back again and tried to enter recovery or download mode, none of them worked. (Even the 4 touch keys don´t light up, exactly like when you try to turn it on without a battery).
I left it charging all the night, and in the next morning, it was all the same.
About the phone
Because of the forum, its obvious that is a sgh-i777 AT&T SGSII. I changed many times of ROM, but I was running a custom one called "Alliance", wich is Touchwiz based and so stable, that I decided to keep it (flashed it maybe 3 months ago).
Regarding the installed apps, I had "RAM Manager", on the "more multitasking" preset, also had "STweaks" on the default profile, a task killer called "Speed Booster", "Next Launcher" and a bunch of games.
About the battery
I went to a store and asked to try a new one, but It didn't worked at all. The guy at the store told me that maybe it was a "Motherboard" (or something like that) issue, so I left the phone there to see if the can fix it, but they didn't have any luck. (I have to admit that it wasn't an official Samsung service center, but a friend's shop, so its probable that they dont know much about this kind of stuff). Besides, if you look closely at the phone, you cant see that the screws were untouched, so it seems that they didnt even try to repair it.
Another important thing is the battery "lifestyle" that I always used with the phone: Usage, from normal to exhaustive during the day and let it charging all night, everyday. I notice some alarming overheating when playin hard games (so hot that I quit playing and put the phone on the floor to make it cooler), this maybe has fried something inside.
I insist in the fact that I dont think that the battery is the problem because It didn't worked with a new one.
Well, the last "strage" thing that may have something to do, is that I plugged the USB cable to a "broken" car charger, causing the car fuse to burn, but I dont know if that could affect the phone somehow. (Notice that this episode ocurred 1 week earlier than the sudden death, so I dont think is a problem...)
So, this is it. Hope you can help me, because I miss my phone quite much (1 week no use...) and I would really love to have it back.

If your phone does not respond to battery, computer, or wall charger then it is what is known as a hard brick.
Your device may have been damaged by the car charger as well.

If you are getting absolutely no response from the phone, and nothing you can do has any effect, then try one last thing (if you haven't already). Pull the battery and leave it out. While holding down both volume buttons, plug in the usb cable. The computer will supply the power. This will put a phone into download mode, but if there is no response to this, then at least you know for sure it is not a battery problem.
There is a difference between "hardware failure" and "hard bricked".
Technically speaking, hard bricked means a firmware problem, usually with the primitive bootloader or the primary bootloader. Such a problem can be fixed using equipment and a technique called jtag, by which the damaged bootloaders are reinstalled. This supposes that the hardware is still functioning correctly.
On the other hand, if the phone has damage to the eMMC memory, or some other hardware failure, then the only remedy is to troubleshoot and repair the hardware. This is perhaps what the technician was suggesting when he said it could be a mother board problem.
Judging from your description of the occurence, it doesn't sound like you did anything that would result in a hard brick. But then I don't know if you actually mentioned everything relevant. In order to find out, you would need to get the phone to a competent technician. The guy who owns Mobile Tech videos is highly respected here. If you wish to pursue getting it repaired, I would suggest that you call him and go over the problem with him, find out his prices, see if he thinks it is worth it, etc.

In a few minutes I will try that USB power method, and see what I get.
Regarding your suggestion, I do very appreciatte your kindness and recomendation of where to take the phone to, but my problem is that I bought the phone in the USA, and I live in Argentina, so its way out of my reach to get what you recommend. Anyway, a few minutes from home there is an official Samsung store, that apparently, offers technical assistance, so I will try luck by going there.
For now, I still say you many thanks and I will keep you informed about what I get.

If the car charger burned down the phone, how can be possible that it continued working during a week before the dropout? I am not saying that's not the problem, but I dont know if there are any relations with so much time in between...

Hard brick repair with jtag would be around US$50.00 plus shipping. Hardware repair would be at least that much in the US unless you can do it yourself. It may be more economical to replace the phone.
When you go to the Samsung store, ask them if it is still under warranty. The phone can be sent to Samsung for repair if they can not do it at the store. I have no idea what that would cost if it is not under warranty. Here in the US we would ship it off to a Samsung repair shop somewhere after talking to them over the phone. But I've never had to do that so I have no idea.

I have no idea what that would cost if it is not under warranty. Here in the US we would ship it off to a Samsung repair shop somewhere after talking to them over the phone. But I've never had to do that so I have no idea.

Thanks for the ideas, but will be impossible, because I bought the phone through eBay and I dont have the invoice, also the phone is rooted and with a custom ROM (triangle alert appears), so the warranty is "super-voided", no chances at all to get it back to stock (remember he's dead...)
I will cross my fingers to see if the can tell me if the can fix it, and how much would it cost.
My major concern is that the failure became impossible to fix. In that case, what will I do? I just can't offer a dead phone on internet for $2... Obviously I need to make some money from him in order to get a new one... However I still have some faith in the official store
You would likely get more than a few dollars selling it on ebay for parts. The digitizer and other parts are definitely worth something. But of course it's not going to be $200.00. Anyway, good luck. I hope you find it is fixable.
My friend water damaged my phone but it works fine, the battery was the only problem.
However, the liquid indicator of the phone turned white from red, indicating that its water damaged and i heard I lost my warranty because of it.
Is there anyway to restore the 6month warranty that i had by payment or how can my friend compensate me?
Seriously? If he is really your friend, and not some random dude, it should be easy for you guys to sort it out without asking here. Just sayin'... However, in my opinion, if nothing is broken, there is nothing to compensate, plain and simple. A new battery and an apology for clumsiness should do. Having a warranty doesn't mean you'll use it -- if something actually happens in these 6 months, and you need your phone serviced, you may have something to discuss with your friend. And if you live 6 months without incident, who gives a crap whether your phone is under warranty or not...
Unfortunately, there is no way of restoring the warranty on the phone. Some stores (e.g. The Source) provide extended coverage against water damage, however that is limited to a single occurrence, and the phone is usually replaced if it is no longer functioning.
As for your question on compensation- I personally think that if it was an accident that the best thing you can do is to forgive him; accidents happen and holding a grudge will get you nowhere. If it was on purpose? Then once again, there are worse things that could happen, you can decide to forgive him or not to. There's no right answer to your question.

I'm afraid Samsung's warranty doesn't cover idiot friends (they'd go broke if it did). But I know someone who can beat your friend up for $50 if you like ?
