I am running a stock 2.1-update1 TMO Vibrant.
I have previously run Obsidian and also some team whisky axura flavor, before going back to stock 2.2.
I had stock 2.2 until I tried to flash the newest overstock kernal last night and bricked my phone.
I had a stock 2.1 recovery laying around, so long story short I am now at 2.1 stock.
I would really like to flash the latest overstock along with a good ROM but am not sure if I should be doing it from 2.1 or if I should kies up to 2.2 and then start.
Also, this whole red CWMR thing has me thoroughly confused. Where is this mysticl red lockworkmod and how do I flash it?
I was thinking Bionix-X for my new rom, but would appreciatte some feedback or other suggestions from the community on what roms are 'best'.
Thanks for any assistance, I appreciatte all info.

Hi, ok...lets clear some stuff first:
1. The red CWM Recovery means its a VooDoo injected kernel....almost all custom ROMs and kernels have VooDoo in it so it will be red.
2. The easiest way is to upgrade to a 2.2 ROM and get the Overstock kernel is to go back to stock 2.1 (which i see you've done already) re-root....DL ROM Manager and flash CWM recovery (which will be green at first), then DL the 2.2 ROM you want, like Bionix-V 1.3.1 and put it on your sd card and flash it.....like i said almost all custom ROMs come with a red VooDoo CWM recovery....so after you flash it....it'll be red....then you can continue to flash Overstock..
Thank you for such a concise (and quick!) response, greatly appreciatted.
Or just flash malice which comes with overstock

I have researched this and am getting more confused by the minute. I have installed Bionix Final stock and I am considering going back to ji6. I have read that I must flash the ji6 kernel even though I dont believe that bionix changed the kernel. When and how must this be done? After flashing to ji6? I would most appreciate it if someone could tell me the steps taken to flash just the kernel or if that is even necessary and also if I can just flash through Clockwork to go back to stock ji7 when Froyo is sent OTA. Would it be safer or easier to just use Odin? Any and all replies are most appreciated!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

thanks for the reply but I read this thread and still am confused. Sorry I am not as informed or astute as you are. Let me mention I am a complete nubie and am looking for simple steps or instructions or answers. I am continuing to search the threads for more information. Its becoming evident to me that I should never have flashed Bionix Final as it appears that there is not a lot of support or help for nubies who have questions and do not understand some of the procedures or terms.
Bionix fusion is based on ji6. It does not actually use the ji6 kernel. It is using a modified jfd kernel so I would not recommend flashing ji6 kernel over the top of it. If you would like to go back to the stock ji6 I recomend odin back to it. But if you wanted you could use jacs kernel or kings kernel if your not happy. Fusion also came in three flavors stock, jacs, kings.

Thanks so much for the helpful reply. Does Bionix final have the same kernel as the fusion does? I am on Bionix Final. I will use Odin to flash back to ji6. Would I use just the tar and pit or do I have to repartition as well? It seems the swype keyboard I am so fond of will not go into landscape mode nor will any of the other keyboards. I have checked the settings and can find nothing that would affect this situation. That is one of the reasons I am contemplating going back to ji6. thanks again for the help and kindness. any info on my other questions is greatly appreciated.
All the bionix roms are using the modified jfd kernel. Im using bionix final r1 and im not having any problems with swipe. I find it to be the best touchwiz rom out there. If you do want to go back to stock use the 512 pit amd the ji6 tar and you don't have to check the repartition box. But if your like me and flash lots of roms I would check the box to get all the ghosts out of the closets (fix force closer issues).

Thanks again. I will put your information to good use. I may stay on bionix final for a while longer. I am overjoyed that I now have the correct procedures to flash back when the time comes. Many thanks and Blessings.
i used odin to flash stock 2.2 froyo, then flashed bionix fusion. i have all of the features of froyo, but when i check on "about phone" it shows that i have 2.1update1... what's up with this?
Can you tell us what features are you talking about?
most notably mobile ap (wifi tethering)... don't know how to check if i have adobe flash...
Ummm, fusion is a 2.1 rom. So it makes perfect sense for it to show 2.1
Sent from my SGH-T959
but its showing that i actually have the stock 2.1-update1 operating system... not just the 2.1 fusion. do i need to flash a custom kernel or anything?

I think that's fine. Everything's working normal? And the mobile AP is really usable even if it's not froyo.
As was said, Fusion is a 2.1 ROM. "2.1-update 1" doesn't mean anything other than it's based off the firmware released a while ago by t-mo that "updated" the existing 2.1. As far as Mobile AP - that's not a 2.2 exclusive feature. I remember it being the first thing I enabled after rooting, but was still 100% 2.1 stock.
If you want 2.2 back, but also want the custom goodness that is TW, check out their Obsidian ROMS (or Onyx if you don't like touchwiz).

2.1-update1 is the version of android you are running. Not the model of the ROM. if you flashed Fusion and you see all the stuff that Team Whiskey added, then you're running fusion.
actually, it doesn't appear flash is working... when i went to a site that uses flash (for streaming music) it would not work....so apparently this is a problem i'm having?

Dude...you're not understanding that Fusion is 2.1, NOT 2.2! So obviously you won't have Flash 10 support.
You need to reflash a 2.2 based ROM if you want all the 2.2 capabilities.
diesel, thanks so much... sorry i missed that in your above post... you have been very helpful. i started a new thread asking about a 2.2 rom. Thanks guys!
Alright guys... This is my situation. I'm running the old Axura 2.2 edition. I saw some screenshots of nero v3 and and read that flashing different roms isn't that hard. The last thing I need is to brick my phone. Therefore I have some questions...
1) How do I flash a different rom from my current rom? Do I have to flash back to stock???
2) What is this Voodoo thing about? I see threads about it making your phone fast but then it can also brick while flashing????
Please help!!!!

1) Its prob safest to flash back to stock. It gives you a clean slate to go on,
2) Voodoo is commonly called a lagfix, but its more then that. It converts your file sytem from the facory rfs to an ext 4 format. Check out supercurios thread in the development section for mere info. PLEASE make sure its disabled before flashing another rom.
3) Read thru the nero thread for proper flashing instructions.

ok so i need to read up on Odin on how to flash back and currently going to supercurious thread... thanks!
Safest to flash back to stock (use odin), But....... you really don't have to. The risk is it might soft brick and then you would have flash back to stock..... So flash away can't hurt. Just remember if you have a lagfix on your phone disable before flashing
I have flashed from Axura 2.2 to Nero3 to heathen, to Ginger Clone and back to Axura I never flashed back to stock....... I have had no problem.......
For the most part they are from the same leak......... so the kernels are not that different.

ODIN tutorial for you...http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=810130
Going back to stock is not a necessity, but advised, since some settings and fragments from a previous ROM can remain and cause issues....not always though. You can always give it a shot, disable voodoo first, then just flash Nero through CWR.
wow thank you guys soo much... you guys cleared up everything... now im comfortable!
Glad to help. Let us know how it works out.
Powered by Axura with a dash of Voodoo
I have 2 Samsung Vibrants( t-959 ), and I installed two versions of Bionix, and still, no voodoo! It says something about the kernel not supporting extended sound controls.
Additional Info -
Firmware: 2.2
Baseband: T959UVKB1
Kernel Version: 2.6.32.9
Build Number: Bionix-v 1.3.1 By Team Whiskey
Please help... Thanks!
Just try flashing a different kernel instead of a different ROM. Try Overstock or Tiger's Blood and see if that makes a difference.
I didnt know you could flash just the kernel! Thats pretty cool... Now how do I do it without messing up? Is there a tutorial, or do you just go into recovery, and install the sip like you would a ROM?
Did you go into recovery and enable voodoo and enable it to change your file system?
There are plenty of guides, take a look in the Bible or simply google, "how to flash kernel, vibrant."
Yes.
Here is a link to the kernel I'm using.

My phone can handle the 2.2 version, but I would start out with the 1.4.2 version and see how that treats you.
In case you don't know, flashing through red recovery is done by pushing your power button and selecting Recovery, not by using clockworkmod.

You have voodoo, just not voodoo sound or color. Bionix 1.3 uses stock kernels so like others have said you should flash a custom kernel like Overstock. You flash kernels the same way you flash ROMs
Thanks for all the replies! Just to make sure I got this right, I downloaded and put onto the phones SD card Overstock 1.4.2. Now all I have to do is boot to Red Screen recovery, select the zip, and intall... Is this correct, or am I missing a step? I already backed up the stock ROM.

Hence the reason I said to flash Overstock or Tiger's Blood. You can even use Kernel Flasher from the market.

Correct, my friend. Just let us know if you have any other issues.
Thanks again guys! Only problem is I dont see that the Kernel was updated. Oh well, at least everything on Voodoo now works, and some of my apps seem to have a few new features... Plus it is QUICK! I went from 12.86 to 14.74 on linpack!
im looking to flash a diff rom but im running darky red 9.5 which is a 2.2.1 rom and im looking to go to a 2.2 rom. So the question is do i go back to stock with odin to do it or i can just do a factory wipe from CW?? Any help would be greatly appreciated!!
Ty for all ur hard work
for the time it takes, i would recommend always flashing odin and disabling voodoo, that way you are sure and wont run into any hiccups later
