[Q] Buying the phone from O2 - payment - Galaxy S II Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Hello. Does anybody who's purchased the phone on PAYG from O2 remember if you need to register it with your name or something? I was just wondering because I'm under 18, and I don't know whether they'd let me buy the S2 if I went in with my parents' credit card...
Am I likely to encounter any issues?
Thanks

TBH you are more likely to have the issue using someone else's card... Any store will ask for identity details when buying any phone (AFAIK), but whether or not they will let you do it is besides the point...
If you look old enough, and happened to have the same name as on the card, then perhaps it wouldn't be an issue? Obviously remember that to use their card is technically against the card issuer's Ts & Cs, so you shouldn't be doing that

I would buy it with my own card, but Paypal is taking ages to process the money from my iPhone 4 sale.
It was actually my parents who suggested that I should use their card, because I don't think they can be bothered to go along with me...
I don't think I'd be able to pull off the 'older than eighteen' trick either, because I'd be in school uniform. I guess I'm going to have to convince someone else to buy it for me.

hmmmm... Might be tricky then... I don't know how strict they will be, but I never accept credit card transactions from people who are evidently at school, as it's technically illegal for them to be using it, and if the parents were unaware of it, it could end up getting charged back (if they feigned ignorance and denied the child had it etc)
Not worth the risk from a merchant's POV, but it is a bit chain so it will just be company policy... If you're lucky they wouldn't look at the card at all and might not notice it was a Mastercard/whatever type of credit card, but usually it will tell them on their screen what type of card is in use...
Hope you get it sorted though

Cancelled My Amazon Order!

Just got off the phone with Amazon, if you read the product description, it DOES NOT come with an SD card, translation - no movies or games in 3D. I want the phone for the processor, but when I get it I want the "cool" part too. I'm paying full retail so I'm going to end up adding a line and getting it for the discount, then... Still will be less than the $500 after activation and I get it tomorrow. If anyone is in the same boat you might want to re-think it.
wirelessmarketplus looks suspiciously similar to wirefly...
But that doesn't come with SD card either, unless I missed it

It's probably just a description error since the phone isnt out yet. I dont see why they would take out the microSD card, boxes are probably shipped sealed.

No, I just off the phone with them too and they said the same thing. It's one of the reasons why the phone is cheaper with them.
An 8 GB SDHC card off Newegg is 12 bucks. If you're spending more than 12$ more somewhere else, you're losing out.
Just saying.
No way it comes without a SD card. Someone doesn't know what they are talking about at Amazon. They get the same box everyone else gets from Sprint

That's what I was thinking too. In all the unboxings you watch, the SD card is sitting there inside the phone already. Unless Amazon opens all them, and takes the SD card out? (Sarcasm)...
The rep was probably like: SD card with the phone? Um, no. You get the phone, that's it. We don't give you a free SD card shipped with it... Completely unawares that the SD card is already in there...
But you never know!
Woah wait does my wirefly one not come with 3d stuff preloaded??!?!?! Or an sd card??!!!

I spoke to HTC also, the sd card and software on it is up to each retailer.

well that sucks
I really do not think you guys should worry. The chances that the amazon orders do not come with the same sd card that everyone else is getting is slim to none. The folks at amazon are simply reading off the same information that you were when you called in and are simply repeating that the description states no sd card. Desription is more than likely wrong.
I agree about them reading straight off the website like I was, and they both admitted it, but if you look at the other phones on Amazon (EVO, Thunderbolt) they specifically state they come with 8GB or 16 and can support up to 32 GB. EVO 3D only says can support up to 32 GB sd card. Thus the cancellation

According to a wire fly rep on another android board your eve 3d will come with the same thing that comes from sprint.
You kidding? Amazon reps = fail. Ive called in several times about false listings... they just credit me about 20 percent of the purchase cost and I am on my way. (If it was missing something)
They gave me back $25 on a pair of $80 earphones because it was missing the cleaning tool haha.
That's very weird. I thought Amazon was just a powerhouse when it came to selling items, so they could afford to be cheaper (like walmart).
this has been beaten to death. THe phone comes with an sd card, end of story. It is the same box that sprint ships you. They cant sell anything other than what sprint would give you. They dont open the boxes and take out the cards, that is stupid. All the websites have issues sometimes when it comes to discription. If you wanna know the true specs always go by the original specs from sprint.
The reps will never guarantee anything. Obviously a sprint or htc rep is going to not guarantee if the third party will come with a card or not. Trust me it is their job to save their ass by not promising you anything. Sprint rep will tell you to buy from sprint if you want a great product, it is typical.
When my phone comes from amazon and I will let you know that it came with the sd card.

They never open the box to tell you what comes inside of it, neither they have the box right next to them to see what it says on there. Just go by HTC and Sprint, those are the real specs. Wirefly, amazon can say it doesn't come with the card, if sprint says it comes with the card then it comes with it.
This was the same issue with thunderbolts where bestbuy website said it doesn't come with the card, I asked the guy at store and he said the phones come directly from verizon or HTC and we dont even touch them. They are the same phones that verizon would give you in their store. To think that we take out sd card is obsurd.
Wow all this issue about the description not saying it includes an SD card, yet no one noticed that the amazon listing still says it records in 1080p. So if you want to believe that amazon honestly gets a different box than Sprint and has a different product then you might as well believe that you will be able to record in 1080p, sounds like a hell of a bargain to me.
To be clear, I'm not saying I expect that Amazon shipped E3D's will shoot 1080p, but you might as well believe that if you are taking their description at face value.

Selling my TB, question?

How can I come up with a fair price? Is there any problem selling a phone when I am still on contract? What should I do to it before selling, unroot, restore, format MC, other?
Thanks!

You can sell it to anyone you want in an condition you want. The contract isn't for the phone, it's for a line. I get new phones on my line using contract upgrades on my other lines all the time. I also switch out and trade phones with other lines, as well as give them away. Never been a problem and Verizon is always happy to help. Now whether a potential buyer wants a rooted device... that's up to him. I'd be prone to making it just look stock and letting him be politely surprised some day.
That makes sense. What about the SIM card, I assume they would need to get a new one?

Got me there. Verizon hasn't exactly held to industry norms regarding their LTE SIMs, but I do know Verizon/Vodaphone GSM SIMs don't need swapped.

Get on Craigslist and see what they are selling for in your area. I always got a decent price for my used android phones. I would make sure you removed the phone from your account before selling it. I bought a used Droid x awhile back that had a bad esn because the person that sold me the phone had a negative balance of 1000 dollars. It was a big waste of money for me.
I traded a dx2 for my thunderbolt and Verizon sent me a sim card for free
Sent from my ADR6400L using Tapatalk
Yep. You may as well just keep your sim since its registered to you and is not transferable. The buyer simply notifies Verizon and they will either mail one to him/her or they can just go into a V store and get one. There's no charge for it. That and if you give the buyer your sim Vrrizon will just take it from them when they issue the new sim.
It's possible to transfer contracts, but more tricky. I believe you need to get the other party on the line with you and verizon and have them agree to take over the contract.
just keep your phone as a back up. that is what i would do

What was your order date?
Method of payment? Credit Card or Debit Card?
Have you called customer service and if so what did they say?
I did read somewhere someone said their order was cancelled, however, he paid by Debit Card and there was some issue.
Is debit they say it was a problem with the paymant my ordee was on 12/3/11. This problem was before buy they two times give my money back then charge
In Canada they don't accept debit visas online and I got an email telling me to provide them with an alternative method of payment within 5 days or my order will be cancelled.

What an interesting thing to choose to share. Must be quite the credit card. Even friends with Centurion cards have limits. High limits, but limits nonetheless.

There simply is no such thing as a credit card with no limit.
All credit cards have limits, some may be very high, but even the highest still have a limit.

There is credit card there is no limit. Not everywhere in the world, but it exists at least in US and HK as far as I know.
Here is one: dailymarkets.com/personal-finance/2010/12/07/american-express-premier-rewards-gold-card-review
wow, this thread went off topic pretty fast.
amex is different in that some of their cards don't have a set limit, but that doesn't mean you can spend outrageous amounts of money whenever and however you want with them just approving everything.
my business card with them is that way, but if i try to pay for a house with my credit card, it's not going to go through.
Actually I think Amex Black does not have a limit but it is rarely issued. Yes you can buy a jet with it.
But we are getting off topic, where did best buy find cans large enough to fit a transformer in?
thats why i ordered with my pile of cocaine that has no limit. makes things considerably easier.
maybe "can sealed" refers to the aluminum back that's causing wi-fi issues.
for reals, though; that sucks. they better not cancel mine, or...or...or...I'll post here in all caps, I guess. Maybe I'll swear off BB and then go there on 12/27 with the gift cards my folks give me for Xmas.

The Centurion card from Amex is by invitation only and has an annual fee of $2,500 and a one time initiation fee of $5K. It has a limit because a friend of mine hit it charging a chartered wide-body for business in an emergency. It was approved with a phone call but it shows there's a limit. Amex is "no preset spending limit," not "no limit."

So, I bought a photon on Craigslist. I'm a firm believer that there are good people in the world as well as bad people. I spoke to the guy on the phone and he was very cordial. When asked, he told me the esn was clean, and that I could call sprint and verify. Upon delivery, his sister told me to call sprint to verify it's clean. I told her it wouldn't be necessary. I figured someone who is out to scam, isn't going to risk losing out on $250. So with that done, I went home. I hopped on checkesn.com and it told me the esn was not cleared. I was in shock, so i decided to sign onto sprint. After some research, I found out that you could figure out if the esn was clear by trying to activate it through the web interface. Same result returned. I called sprint and they told me that the phone was still attached to the account and that I had to ask the owner to release the phone. After I texted the guy, He said it was his mistake, and that he must have given me the wrong photon. He said he would call and have it removed from that account. He texted me back saying that it was cleared. 2 hours later, and it's still not cleared. I don't think that he would go through the rigamaroo of responding to me, if he wasn't planning on resolving this. Now its starting to seem more and more like I'm going to be stuck with a photon for a paperweight... sigh

yeah, knowing myself though, I will find away to get his address from that number... and I can be a very mean and vindictive person. I'm just trying to change...
Maybe it's not his fault and the carrier screwed up. Before jumping to conclusions, I would find out as much info as possible, then if not satisfied, try asking the guy if he'll give you a refund. No need to be "vindictive", that'll only lead to more trouble. Especially if it's not the guys fault. Sounds like he has been trying to help and if he were trying to scam you, he would ignore you. And after all is said and done, if you don't get it resolved then chalk it up as experience. There is some personal responsibility in buying from sites like craigslist and ebay. You stated that the seller told you to call and check the ESN first and you declined. If you would have done so, you wouldn't be in the situation you're in. Seems the blame should not be laid on the seller in the end, but on you for not doing your due diligence.
Sadely, I'm with stonesaber, and trust me, Sprint's computers are not the top of the litter. Take it to the store and see what happens.
It's probably attached to an account with a balance. If it isn't cleared, you have grounds to charge him (obtaining property under false pretense, a felony). Perhaps remind him of this.

No, I met with his sister at a public place. I just called her and she said that she has another phone connected to the account, so this one should not be attached to the account. I read somewhere that you have to wait something like 30 days before you swap esn's ( Don't recall if this applied to vzw or sprint). She said to call sprint and tell them it was a gift, and I wanted to manually activate it. She said if that doesn't work, she would switch out the phone with the one that they originally intended to give me. I just feel like when I try to call her back, her phone will be disconnected as well...
Worst case scenario, I can sell it to someone overseas for them to use with their sim chip... Don't know if anyone would want to pay $250 for it though.

Since it's connected to an account, it'd be easy for you to get that money back via court. Also - Since it can be used on GSM networks, you could configure that and sell it as an unlocked GSM device, recoup some of your losses, if not all.

Now I know... Stay away from Craigslist... I called her back, and she said she would get it squared away in an hour. What I find peculiar is that she called the phone she sold me, and apologized, and said she would get it disconnected, if not, she would meet me to give me another phone. I told her I would call her back at 12. She insists that she will give me another phone, should she not be able to remedy the situation with this one. Fingers still crossed.
I hope it works out for ya. Be calm and let her know that if it's not resolved one way or another legal action will be required.. this kind of crap happens all the time. People are bums.

Thanks for the reply nemanracing, but sure enough, everything has been remedied! One question, which hopefully you can answer. Now that the phone is clear and good to go for activation, is there anyway Sprint will " change their mind" and deactivate the phone? I don't know what this lady did, but it says the esn is clear. Just want to make sure the bill doesnt get tacked onto my account some how.
You definitely won't be held liable for any balance accrued by another individual. If it activates, you should be good to go.

He probably had a throw away phone. After all, didnt you say that he sent his daughter to deliver the phone? Perhaps so that you did not actually see him? Just sayin, if I were selling something like that my daughter would be the last person I would send to do it for me.

What a complete mess

Hey everyone. After receiving my VZW Galaxy Note II, my wife decided that she wants to upgrade to it as well. We placed the order for her device and we received it last night. Upon going to activate it I was receiving a no SIM error. I took the back plate off to check the SIM and the card was inserted backward, with the gold contacts facing up instead of down.
I popped the sim card out using the push in spring to release it. It came out smoothly, no force necessary. Upon pulling the card out, one of the pins is completely broken off in the tray. So I contacted Verizon.
Multiple calls later, multiple trips into a local store - I am told Verizon is washing their hands of it and we need to call Samsung to have it repaired. Is this for real? Does anyone know if the cards are inserted from Verizon or from Samsung? Why would a simple mistake like this not be covered by the worry free guarantee?
Does anyone have any suggestions?
the sim never comes preinstalled so that makes no sense to me.
yep the sim never comes pre installed but any way if you have asurion claim accidental damage and pay $100 is better than a $699

I had the customer service rep on the phone tell me the same thing, which caught me off guard. At my work, every 4G device we purchase wether its an Android or an iPhone - its always preinstalled.
The card was also damaged a bit too, because it only is supposed to go in one way. So it was inserted and then forced in.

They shouldn't have to pay for it if it's Verizon's fault. The sim is installed by Verizon or which ever 3rd party you have purchased from.

if it was from a 3rd party store then yes you right but I been verizon customer for 6 years and since the first 4g phone I have received never never had the sim pre installed
Fight to return the phone.
Make complains to Verizon. It is not Samsung's fault.
The question is who installed the SIM card.
If Verizon did, they owe you a new phone/SIM/whatever it takes to resolve the issue.
If You did, then you could try to get a new SIM and see if it works. If not... you're beat?
It sucks but it is what it is.
The SIM was pre-installed in my GN2....as well as my DNA. Caught the Verizon Clerk off-guard because she took out new cards from her drawer. I think new Verizon 4G phones (going forward) have their SIM cards already installed.
Pre-installed SIM Cards
I work at a Verizon store, and I can clear up the confusiuon about SIM cards being pre-installed. iPhone 5, Motorola Droid Razr/Maxx HD, and the Droid DNA all come in with pre-installed SIM cards. Where as none of the Samsung phones on Verizon do, well not yet anyway.
So, I just came by to let you guys know that it does happen, just not always.

I thought about this as well. However, the last thing I want to do is it get sent back and then Verizon charges me retail cost for a phone that is defective - which is what the rep on the phone said would happen. Thats why I would "have to go to Samsung."
I contacted our Verizon rep that handles our account at work to see if he could intervene and help out a bit. He doesnt think he can do much either, but will look into it. Such a cluster, I'm livid with Verizon.

If you bought the phone from an authorized retailer, they are responsible to fix the damage. Buying if through a corporate store, I would've denied this happening at all.
Makes no sense, if it's defective it should be replaced

My Best Buy bought Note II came without a SIM. Obviously, the Verizon retards f'd up and they need to be held accountable instead of passing the blame to Samsung. Talk to Verizon corporate and file a BBB complaint.
Just got my 2 new GN2's today and neither of them had the SIM card installed in the phone. Pulled them out of the boxing brand new, had to cut the SIM card from the little credit card sized holder, and install them myself.
Was slightly embarrassing as I am used to simply clicking it in easily and when I was on the phone with Verizon activating them, I had to put the cards in and was having a really hard time doing so. You really have to click these things in deep on the Note 2 for them to be fully inserted. I had read this thread prior to getting my Note 2's so I was extra cautious in this situation. Had them put in gold contacts face down, the nipped corner on the left side, and just kept pressure on it until it finally clicked in place.
I could see why some people had problems doing it, especially if you compound that tightness issue with installing the card improperly.
Verizon is hiring a bunch of new people for the holidays and they dont know sh#t about sh#t. The girl could even get the back plate of the note 2 off..she finally did and inserted my sim card right out of my s3, she even asked me for my sd card. They should be fully responsiable for their mistake.

From what I gather, this phone was ordered online therefore it rules out the people in-store.
