I just have a quick question. I was just checking out the Galaxy S I9000 forums and they have a lot of ROMs/kernels/Themes/MODs over there and it looks like there are some pretty stable 2.3 ROMs in those development forums. I guess my question is: Do the ROMs/kernels/MODs/Themes from the Galaxy S I9000 development forums work for the Samsung Fascinate?
I'm just confused because I figured any ROM/kernel/MOD/theme that would work for the Fascinate would be posted in the Fascinate's development forum. Thanks.

you cannot flash anything from another sgs phone (save the showcase/mesmerize with some modifications) on the fascinate
some mods have been ported, but the i9000/captivate/telus fascinate/vibrant are all gsm phones...the radio stuff is very very different
even the epic 4g which is cdma/wimax has done very little for us
samsung treats each phone like an island when developing software for it...we are on our own
Sorry but anything not specifically listed as compatible for the fascinate will at least not work and at worst soft-brick your phone. The majority of galaxy s phones are gsm, unlike the fascinate which is cdma. That difference in radio type requires a difference in software so their stuff won't fly on our hardware.

Okay I understand. Thanks for the quick responses.

Hey guys just wondering if you can use Vibrant roms, or any other galaxy S roms on other devices specifically the Epic 4g.. Thanks
Possibly no. When Eugene made his ROMs, he makes a semi-revision of his ROM to make it compatiable. Hence Hybrid has three different versions to his ROM: Captivate, Vibrant, I9000. Stick to the Epic 4G forum for development, the tweaks here may work and may not work. So just be careful.
I don't really follow Epic 4G development, but is there at least Clockwork Recovery for it? I couldn't find anything about that. That is the next step that Epic 4G needs, you guys already have Root access.
So don't want anyone to get uppity, I am not a dev but have been following the android dev scene for roughly a year with the utmost respect for developers.. Here is my question, outside of the obvious dragons faced when trying to port a European or International Galaxy s rom for use with our Vibrants, why don't we Vibrant owners see more port attempts or even a lively community of ported roms as seen for the Captivate... Is it the willingness or know how of the Captivate devs or is it just not possible for the Vibrant due to further complexities? From what I was following a while back Eugene had some problems porting a 2.2.1 rom and Heathen also had problems with soft reboot issues in his attempt... However over in the Captivate section there are a number of ports and even working BLN kernals... Are Vibrants capable of the same kind of development? Also we saw a short lived appearance of BLN kernals, does anyone know what happened? Thanks for any insight..

The reason for lack of ports is that Vibrant really doesn't have a strong following of devs (TW, Eugene, Master, Heathen to name a few). There are very few full out rom devs for our phones. Thus, they are always busy with contriving their own masterpieces, and with the current release of 2.3 I firmly doubt any port attempts will be undertaken.
Also, ports themselves take massive amounts of work, in addition to bugs and glitches galore.
I saw an false claim to gingerbread for the fascinate in another forum, but this article from The Tech Journal seemed a little more reliable. Can anyone enlighten me if this is a big deal?

Understood, and the article points out that it cannot be used by the NA version of the galaxy S, but what caught my attention was the statement,
"if you own a device like the Samsung Vibrant or Samsung Captivate, this won’t yet work. Thankfully the hacking community works blindingly fast so it most likely won’t be long before this leak is ported to the North American versions of the Galaxy S."
Is this wild speculation, or are devs able to do something with this in the near future?
Fascinate is a CDMA phone, the Vibrant and Captivate are GSM phones, as is the i9000, nothing from a GSM phone will work with a CDMA phone and vice versa, this will not help us at all.
I'd really like to get the Galaxy S2, but not without Cyanogen Mod support. What do you think are the chances that the Galaxy S2 will get CM? The Galaxy S still has no stable CM Rom.
Does a bear **** in the woods?

Polar bears don't.
But why doesn't the Galaxy S have a stable CM ROM then?
Stock Media Codecs > CM
if they find a way to keep all the goodies from Samsung then I'm all for it
Frankly, I don't care about the Samsung programmes. If it can be turned off, then ok, but I'd rather have the whole CM experience.
This hardly seems like the right forum for this thread...
So what's the right forum, if not the Galaxy S II Android Development Forum?
Android Development should only contain threads based on actual projects/ROMs/kernels/etc being developed. Discussions about what may or may not be coming to the device should go in general. Best rule of thumb in my book: if you're not actually developing something yourself, a thread shouldn't be started here.
Sorry if I came off like a prick - I just know that this ends up becoming more work for the mods who have to comb through and move threads around.
Also I apologize for theoretically hijacking your thread - Just trying to help keep people in the know
hopefully it will get CM
i really cant stand touchwiz

No problem, I didn't know that.
Maybe a moderator can move the thread into the appropriate forum.
What I really like to know is why the Galaxy S still hasn't got a stable release. Is this also to be expected with the S2?

I agree. Good post, and yes, this should have been in General. Just keep that in mind for the next time We are all excited for this phone, and i personally think that Samsung stock ROM is also quite good. However, to each his own, and I am sure that CM will be out for this phone too
Cheers!

The SGS2 is similar to the SGS in many ways, therefore CM will be difficult to port over.
Especially that there is no Nexus S 2 (a lot of CM7 is from the Nexus S)
Don't expect CM7+ to be running on the SGS2 anytime soon, although it probably eventually will. That's unless anything else happen (a/a genius comes along b/samsung open source more stuff c/Nexus S 2 is released d/sgs2 shares even more with the sgs than I though and current work can be ported over more easily)
This phone is fast enough without CM7. A clean up of the stock ROM, a new launcher and its sweet enough!

It will still miss the CM Tweaks.
A shame that Cyanogen has chosen the G2x as his next phone. The Galaxy S2 is way better than the G2x.

i'm not aware of the history, why exactly was it difficult to bring cyanogen to the original galaxy s, and hence this SGS2 as well? wasnt it like any other phone, the source was released, and cm team built from that?

Buy the devs a SGS 2 and they can work on it . Bit hard to work on a phone you dont have .

Well, apparently they have a Galaxy S, otherwise there wouldn't be Release Candidates.
Hey guys,
I'm new to the Android community. Im debating between OGS2 vs Skyrocket. I've been reading about how the OGS2 will have more 'developer support' than the Skyrocket. What exactly does that mean? Ive had jailbroken iphones so I know a bit bout phone modding. From what I understand, the Skyrocket has been rooted and will be getting ICS. So would it be able to use all the same hacks as the OGS2? Thanks.

Thanks for your reply. Lol Im assuming 'accute' means 'the same' right? I guess I'm just worried if I go with the Skyrocket it wouldn't have as many themes, mods, updates, etc...

Acute being defined as small, It may or may not have the same sized community but I am going with small. With the difference in basically everything on the phone, nothing from the ogs2 will be easily ported over the skyrocket. You best bet is to get the TMob GS2 devs to make a port as that phone is far more similar to the sky rocket than the ogs2.

Yes as meaning Small, the dev support with be Minute in comparison. so if your a flashaholic u may want to get the OGSGS2
Smaller. The issue is it's different hardware than that of the International SGSGII, Sprint and AT&T SGSII.
The i777 can have ported roms due to similar hardware - much like the Galaxy S line (Galaxy S, Captivate and so on).
It's one reason I chose the SGSII.

I rooted my skyrocket and the cwm for the tmobile version is suppose to work
I also think dev support for the skyrocket will be less than the OGSGS2. I have the OGSGS2 and was a little afraid that our very talented devs would jump ship to the Skyrocket. That's why I was ecstatic to see Entropy512's latest release....Hellraiser for OGSGS2 (see dev section for thread). This opens up the very established and large i9100 dev community to our i777.
It boils down to this - i9100 has a VERY large international community behind it. The i777 is very similar to i9100 and now with Hellraiser we can even flash their ROM's. Skyrocket has a different chipset that isn't as well supported....YET. (someone correct me if I'm wrong on this).
Aah ok I see now. The difference in hardware is the reason why one has more dev support. Thanks for the explanation fellas. Unfortunately that makes my decision tougher since I was leaning towards Skyrocket but now I don't know. I don't wanna miss out on hacks and whatnot.
It doesn't make much sense that it's tacked onto the i777 forum. It'd be like putting the Infuse forum into the Captivate section.

I agree... While the two share similar names, that truly seems to be the extent of the similarities...
Can the Powers that Be consider creating a separate Forum just for the Skyrocket so as to eliminate possible confusion, especially from noobs?
I can see a whole bunch of bricked phones from people trying to flash a custom ASGSII ROM onto a Skyrocket just because they didn't know any better, and they were located in the same subforum.
We all know how much people tend to READ warnings... it's always AFTER something is F'ed up. LOL...

Worse than Infuse in the Cappy section... I wish there were a "report forum for moving" thread. At least Heimdall worked on the Infuse!
I'm so afraid of the flood of "Y HEIMDALL NO WORK?" threads that are going to come with the Skyrocket in our forums.

I don't mind READING info on the Ltd gs2. BUT I sure hope that any mods, roms, development WILL NOT be included into the dev section otherwise WE WILL be seeing people that are newer coming in here with their lte SGS2 and flashing i777 roms and vice versa newbs with i777 flashing i727 lte phone roms, mods, etc. and causing all kinds of issues. I hope they get their own sub forum soon before any major development takes place for it.

People are posting here because it's been the topic of quite a bit of discussion here. But if you want us to have our own forum, feel free to vote to get us one. I for one thing the Skyrocket hate is getting old quickly. It's certainly much better "out of the box" than the OG. (I certainly don't miss the button lag and lower network speeds). It will get support soon enough, and for now you can always root it and use the stock kernel.
I don't miss the middle button lag but I do miss the middle button!
