Droid charge - Fascinate Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Is it possible to run Droid charge rom, modem and kernal on fascinate? I ask because I was a htc hd2 owner and they were able to install any htc rom on htc hd2 using maglrd. Since Droid Charge part of samsung family just inquiring if it's possible.

I don't actually know but every bit of my being says NO! Samsung's hardware is probably second to none. But, that's about the only thing Samsung is good for and that is also the reason I own a Samsung phone. But, as far as compatibility, support, or being developer friendly, Samsung sucks!!

You may be able to get the ROM to work, but that would be it, and it also wouldn't be a direct transfer, you'd need to change some stuff like they do to get Fascinate ROMs working on the Mesmerize. The kernel would only partially work, and I think the modem is different as well.

[Q] Thinking of switching...

Is there anything like Odin for HTC phones (Android) like the Thunderbolt (lets just say Desire HD)?
I'm thinking of switching because of the cheap plastic and because of the antenna on all 3 of my fascinates. Also, the only reason I got this phone is because of the unlocked bootloader.
Also, are there great developers that are going to work on the Thunderbolt (like we have here)?
Additional question: Assuming that the Thunderbolt is the same price on contract as the Fascinate, is it possible to replace the Fascinate with the Thunderbolt (with all of the problems I have)?
There's nothing like ODIN on the Thunderbolt, although the overall flashing and things on an HTC device should be easier than a Galaxy S. The likely of the Thunderbolt having a lot of devs is high, because I'm assuming that as the next Verizon HTC device, many Incredible devs will migrate to it.
What do you mean by replace?

By replace, I mean trade in for a new device. I bought it at Best Buy if that matters.
EDIT: By Odin, I mean flashing completely to stock if anything goes wrong, or if I just want stock sense again.
If your on a contract, you can't just trade your device in for a new one. Though, Best Buy's Buy it Back program might let you if you applied for it, though I don't know the exact details. If you buy just the device for the full price, you can switch the phones on your contract by deactivating your Fascinate and activating your Thunderbolt.
HTC has a program called HTC Sync that flashes the RUU, or the stock firmware, onto your HTC device. Though, I don't think you will need to flash the RUU at all with the Thunderbolt unless you need to return to stock as it doesn't have Voodoo or the things that mostly cause brick problems for the GalaxyS devices and most of the things you can just flash the stock firmware rom zip to fix problems.

I am not registered for the buy it back program. Also, does the RUU flash recovery, stock boot logo (param.lfs on Fascinate), boot loader, etc.?
HTC uses the RUU and it will update the device based on what is included with the RUU. It would be similar to odin packages for SGS phones, you can include everything or just one thing in the flash package. Most times though, I feel like you're going to want a full RUU package when you need it.

Can I open the RUU's in 7-Zip to see what's inside?

[Q] Galaxy S over Droid X?

What one should I get for a replacement....DX crashed.
Fascinate. Bar none.
Sent from my SCH-I500 using XDA App
Well if you want lots of ROMs and developer support, go with a Droid phone.
If you want no support from the manufacturer and little developer support with very few fully working ROMs- the devs we have are great though- go with a Fascinate.
Hate to say it. But it's true.

Forget to mention superior hardware on the galaxy s.... but other than that, spot on.
Droid X has a locked bootloader and hardware that's not as good as the Fascinate's. Get the Fascinate. Really, I'd recommend the Fascinate just for the SAMOLED alone, it's hard to go back to another phone's screen after you've experienced it.
I am testing both phones for work, and all in all the Droid X BLOWS as a work smartphone. The battery dies in about 6 hours for a full charge, and the Corporate Email Sync is non-existent. The only plus that I see with the Droid X is the fact that it has Froyo on it. Other that that, it blows.
Both are great phones, and I'm sure you'd be happy with either one.
However, if you're buying the phone -- not just being given one through Asurion -- it would be really silly to buy either the X or the Fascinate right now when you can get the Thunderbolt for the same price (or even slightly less -- 174.99/2yr on Amazon).
i owned a DX
the fascinate is a better phone with the correct ROM & kernel installed
the deplay is second to none on this phone
Guess what!
I have the Galaxy S now!!! Any advice to give me?
Make sure your GPS works. If it doesn't exchange it.
When you have one with a GPS that works, Odin to EB01, then install the latest Super Clean with the latest open source kernel.

Yeah, don't expect updates. Ever.
Have you used the Fascinate? I had the DX since release then used the Fascinate once and felt like I was screwed. The screen is reason enough.
If you want a phone that has horrible GPS, bad battery life, Bing search, crashes all the time, and still on 2.1 with no hope for 2.2, then go with the Fascinate.
If you want a phone that works righ out of the box, then get the Droid X.
The Droid X won't have any AOSP ROMs because of the locked Bootloader.
The Fascinate have been out for 9 - 10 months and still doesn't have any fully working AOSP ROMs because of lack of source and bad samsung programing.
I sold my Fascinate and I'm on a Droid X running Gingerbread. I couldn't be happier.
Did I mention the Fascinate is still running 2.1!!!

True, the fascinate has a lot of modifications that need to be done out of the box and the Droid X has a locked bootloader, however, Vanilla Froyo is a fully functional AOSP ROM for the fascinate on 2.2. The Fascinate has superior hardware. It runs great when compared to a Droid X IMO (as soon as you get rid of verizon and samsung shoddy programming). I don't know a whole lot about the Droid X community, which it could be an awesome community, however I will say that the Fascinate Dev community is fantastic and I wouldn't trade them in for any other group out there.
Plus, the Droid X is one ugly ass phone.

Go into the Dev community and read a lot about the ROMs and the differences between the ROMs. I'm not an official developer, but I like to tinker myself with the codes. If I were you, try Superclean with Voodoo, Vanilla Froyo with Voodoo (I think it only comes with voodoo), and Miui (which only comes with Voodoo). If you are adventerous try Cyanogen Mod 7 test build (Gingerbread). I myself run the 4/4 Miui Test ROM from the IRC channel and love it.

My GPS works fine. My battery life is standard for a smart phone, 1-2 days between charges, depending on use, and from what I've heard, the DX is worse on battery. Bing isn't an issue and can be replaced. My phone doesn't crash unless I do something that causes it (testing a kernel for example), and I've been on 2.2 since January.

At least the Fascinate users have an option to use an AOSP rom, regardless of how functional it is. I'm guessing that AOSP will be fully functional at some point, though it could still be a few months.

Lastly, I like how you're comparing a STOCK Fascinate to a non-stock DX. Apples and oranges much?
I've used a Fascinate and a Droid X myself (as well as some other phones including other droids, iphones, and winmo phones), and while each of them had certain characteristics I did not care for, I still like the Fascinate the best.. Especially running a rom such as SC on it!
I was thinking I might go get myself a TB when reading about them before they were available,, but then after playing around with one in a store I actually decided I still like the Fascinate better (TB was just too thick of a device for my preference).
Like everyone else, I hate the fact that it seems the Fascinate is one of the worse phones to have if you desire factory updates,, but hey with a dev community like we have to fill that one shortcoming,, I am one happy camper!
Droid X has a larger screen, that's about it. And more RAM.
Other than that. The Fascinate out performs the X in just about everything. (Even on 2.1 and honestly, if you don't care for flash, 2.2 isn't too big a deal)
Benchmark nerds, need not apply.
The screen alone, as someone pointed out already, is amazing.
And I feel my fascinate is far more "hackable" than the X will ever dream of being.
I used to own the X and I was looking desperately anywhere to find someone dumb enough to buy it. Sure enough, someone broke their original droid and bought my X for $200. Thank god, hated that thing.
Ok when I was on the phone odering it they said everything was good to go but I didnt have a credit card with me at the time and I had to call back and they said they can only give me a Droid x since it was for replacement and we talked for 2 more hours! So now I have a Droid X for trade....Any tips for when someone offers to trade me their phone?

[Q] htc hero g2 rom upgrade question.....

Can anyone tell me if it is possible to install custom roms which are designed for the HTC Legend onto the HTC Hero/T-Mobile G2 Touch?
Visually they look almost identical, and aside from the difference in the screen and slightly faster CPU, I can't see much difference.
Anyone tried such a thing yet?
no you can't unless someone ported them to the hero you would probably brick your phone of you tried and I don't think anyone would try a rom which is not meant for the phone
Yeah you can, it won't boot but it won't be bricked unless the rom contains a radio.img. Then you're ****ed
some work needs to be done in order to make lengend roms work on hero. experts may explain you in a better manner.
In theory it should work, I think the Legend has the same basic hardware and CPU architecture, so if you flash a ROM from it make sure to flash a kernel meant for the Hero, that will update the boot.img and should in theory allow you to boot.

General question for thunderbolt users

So I am offered at work I Samsung charge or thunderbolt . I like htc but I have consider trying out a samsung phone. Seems like thunderbolt is liked more is it completely unlock and flash able and able restore to stock so I guess my two part question is modding community behind this phone and does anyone think there is an advantage at all with charge over thunderbolt
Both phones are completely unlocked. Samsung never locks their bootloaders. Still rather have a thunderbolt though for every reason except the display.
The Thunderbolt will also do data and voice simultaneously in CDMA. No other LTE devices do that.

This and the fact IMO the thunderbolt feels better in the hand. The charge has a better looking display but it's also an ugly phone lol. Like stated above both are easily rooted and loaded with custom ROMs and kernels. There isn't a lot going on in the development section here anymore but there are other sites that offer a load of TBolt ROMs/kernels.
If battery life is a concern of yours research both devices.

[Request] Roms for Samsung Illusion/Proclaim

I have searched high and low about information regarding any custom roms for the Samsung Illusion (verizon) and Galaxy Proclaim (Straight Talk) for a while now. I know there is a root for it finally, but can anybody more knowledgable than myself help a) get the stock base image for the device as this would be a great starting place for basic tweaks, and b) develop a CM7 or perhaps CM9 based rom for this device? I know its not a high end phone by any means but it is a very capable phone for the price and fact that it runs on Straight talks no contract Verizon network. I don't know how to develop a rom at all but I am having rom flashing withdrawals after getting rid of my old Optimus V which had many customs ROMS including CM9/ICS. If any developer could help out with this I know many people including myself would be very grateful
we already have a stock base for the proclaim and are working on a new Rom for it, http:/androidarea51.com

I got in contact with somebody that does custom roms for phones and this is what he said: "I might to if I get more requests..."
If you would like a custom rom for The Samsung Galaxy Proclaim (Straight Talk) as I am pertaining to ICS 4.0 (Google Android OS), then request it through this website: http://www.roms-db.com/contact/
He will only take requests through this form of contact/request form!
I hope that this helped everyone in this forum and those like me that are helpless with this phone on XDA Developers!!

I sent a request asking for and ICS rom like CM9. Thanks. Let's hope more people are interested as well

I've very interested in some roms for this phone as well. It is my first android phone, I've already got it rooted but I would love to have ICS or CM9 on it. I think it would improve my battery life substantially.
Curious to know how development has come with this phone? I'll be picking one up on the 23rd and I bought one already for my husband yesterday. We are in the process of switching from Verizon to StraightTalk. (Gotta save money anywhere we can in this crappy economy)
All I know is that it is not the best phone that I had from Straight Talk, but it is the only smartphone through Verizon

This isn't the only Verizon smartphone that Straight Talk has. In my local walmart they also carry an LG with a slide out keyboard, 3.2" touch screen and 800mhz processor. I purchased one and it seems to get better battery life than the proclaim. I got the proclaim one week and the LG wasn't there, but when I returned it was on the shelf next to it. I haven't been able to find it on their website yet though.

Does the LG phone have the Qwerty Slide Keyboard along with a Touchscreen? Is it a SmartPhone??
Just wondering if that is the same phone that I saw on Straight Talk for my area...

don't buy the zip over the proclaim!!! The ZIP has half the memory and you can only install a few apps before having run out of space (I have the Proclaim while my sister-in-law bought the ZIP). She wishes she would have gone with the Proclaim.
I'm also interested in custom ROMs for the Proclaim but don't see it happening...I still haven't rooted as some people are saying they have issues with wifi hotspot after rooting.
I can use FoxFi now without rooting for wifi hotspot.
updates?
Any updates on ANY roms for sch s720c? Somebody help! Lol
Root First?
While we're all waiting patiently for some roms... has anyone found a root method that DOES NOT disable the functionality of USB drive?
From what I've read, the root methods so far work, with the exception that afterwards, when you plug in your phone, it shows up as a CDROM drive.
