I just purchased a "new" Dell Streak 5 from their Sales dept. I assumed I was buying new as there are none in the Dell outlet store.
When I received it, the inside box was open, could not find the micro SD card to insert and the backplate would not seat properly, so could do nothing more since the backplate would not stay put, so could not charge battery, etc.
Also, the Date of Manufacture said Oct 8, 2010--that's pretty old for a "new" streak, so I am guessing I was sent a Refurbished unit when I ordered a brand new one.
Now, their returns dept is non-functional--since last Wednesday and no indication when it will be back up.
So, I am sitting here stuck with an old, defective, non-functional Streak 5 and probably my last purchase from DELL---EVER!
What is the experience of anyone who has purchased an unlocked Streak 5 directly from DELL in last 6 months--did you get one with DOM that was 8 months or older?
Not refurbished but old/different
I have received a replacement (unlocked version so they send a new one) from Dell in past month and it was made in October as well (the back cover didn't fit until I used a knife to open the gap on the latch). I think these are ones that were not produced with the same materials as most other Streaks(and Dell probably knew it) I'm thinking these might have a different LCD causing the fit and finish of the device to be off. I've had 3 Streaks now and My first one was an older one(September or October date) and the screen was probably the best of the three until its contrast got messed up. My second one was a newer one (January date) and its screen was kinda yellowish compared to my first one. My third one(current one was built 10/06/2010) and its screen looks like the first one with very bright whites. Out of the 3 the second felt a little more solid and the battery cover was very easy to install, on 1 and 3 the battery cover was/is somewhat cumbersome to put on. I believe Dell switched LCD's on the streak 2 or 3 times causing the difference in image quality and fit and finish of the device. Also as of May 4 the the Streak was discontinued so your going to get whatever they have on hand. So to summarize your device probably isn't used but its fit and finish is quite right, Also remember your device may seem used because it was taken out of the box to be upgraded by dell technicians(seeing as Froyo wasn't released for the Streak until December).
I had no idea they were discontinuing the Streak--is that the 5 inch AND the 7 inch. Why is that? Is it being replaced by something else?
Dell road map for the streak line is to launch a new streak 5 code named "Opus One" Q1 2012, dell could be playing it smart and slowing down the production of the 5" hybrid but doesn't make much sense to stop all making of the device isn't their that promotion deal going on in the states " buy a new computer over 600 bucks add a streak 5 for a 100" thing still going on, sucks they screwed you over like that, thats bad business practice, good thing I got mine made to order took more then a month for the dam thing though not unlocked thought stuck with rogers canada

Hello XDA,
I just received my Gtab this morning (a day early!). I quick plug it in and turn it on to see a dead/stuck pixel on the top right of the screen on the status bar.
No, no, I am not a tech-newb. I have rubbed several stuck pixels out of panels before. I have bought 3 refurb hp2465s and two of the three needed a little love. With help from some stuck pixel videos and some massaging they look pretty sharp. This leads me to the point. From my experience i have been able to identify the difference between stuck and dead pixels. This time around I cannot truly tell:
-Said pixel looks just fine in a WHITE background, it blends in
-In black it looks RED
-In most other backgrounds it looks GREY
Any suggestion or hints would be appreciated.
Btw, I haven't checked with woot yet, but I am pretty sure there will be nothing they can do. I will contact Viewsonic tomorrow and see what they suggest or if they will replace it.
*Update - 04/02/2011*
As of mid-day my new tablet was delivered via FedEx just under 3 days of contact by Woot. I never had to formally request an RMA, 100% painless. I charged the new tablet while at work, upon returning there were no dead pixels to be found. I am content.
To those interested, I was somewhat disappointed with the build quality of the Gtablet and almost had Woot give me a full refund. If I wasn't going to Scotland in May and needed a tablet/netbook for the flight, I probably would have took the refund route. To my delight and surprise, I found the replacement Tablet to be beyond superior to the original with the dead pixel:
1) The side bezel lines up better with each half not causing an irritating excursion.
2) The webcam lens is centered in the hole - not shifted to the side.
3) This one could be my imagination, but I am pretty sure the viewing angles on the tablet's screen are significantly better. If the original was a refurb sold as a new tablet, then this panel is of a high quality. (Otherwise the panel was just install right-side-up as some threads have hinted)
I am now 100% satisfied with this purchase. Now to wait for my travel sized mechanical keyboard to arrive, and a final decsion on my first ROM to try. Any suggestions?!
Apple has a dead pixel policy - on the iPad, it's three. Not sure what Woot! / Viewsonic will do, but you might want to call Viewsonic. They might want you to do an RMA.
arent ipads pixels like a quarter of the size? i know ipod touch pixels are small as hell and would be nearly impossible to see if just one was out without putting the thing to your face
The iPad2's resolution is 1024x768. The pixel density is very close to the gtab's.
wow, isnt that almost the same as the iphone 4's res? i thought they were unusually high res
resolution and pixels are two different things. if they were the same a 42"1080P tv would look horrible compared to a 24" 1080P tv
Same thing happened to me!!!
Maybe Woot got a deal on these tablets with a dead pixel? I'm trying to send it back ASAP.

Mine didn't look repackaged at all. Everything was in top notch condition packaging wise. There were no fingerprints or scuffs/marks that would indicate anyone would have previously RMA'd this device. If viewsonic packaged these in a seaperate bundle to sell to an online retailer such as woot, I would consider Viewsonic pretty shady.
As I said, I will contact viewsonic and see if they will make right by this. I have been nose deep in forum posts since my woot purchase and I haven't seen much in the way of dead/stuck pixels on a Gtab.. yet.
As a last ditch effort I might need a tutorial for disassembly. Maybe I can massage this stuck pixel.

woot listed them as "New", not "Refurbished" (obwoot: rox0rz!)
FWIW, I had a problem with an Archos 504 MP I bought from WOOT in 2007. The item was brand new and had a defective display. I e-mailed Woot's customer service and they sent me a new one before I even mailed back the original to them. Their customer service is fantastic, or at least was in that case.
Definitely contact Woot first before going to Viewsonic.

Thanks for the advice. Looking forward to emailing Woot the second I sit down for "lunch".
i would google it some...
i bet there is an easy fix... i thought i saw something on lifehacker about rubbing it out ....
Wooter here. Just got home and to my dismay a nice dead pixel on the top left. Sucks.
Just emailed Woot. Hopefully the replacement comes soon.
I hope it's not symptomatic to the wooter tablets. It may be that Woot got a deal on them because they are second grade.
same thing here, trying to fix it first.
Same here. Two STUCK pixels, bottom left and near center
Dead Pixel
Sadly, I also have a dead pixel on the bottom left of my tab. I did the over the air update but it made no difference. I am reluctant to do any modding in case I have to send it back. I just have issue with something "new" having a dead pixel. It distracts/bothers me. Thanks to all for sharing their experiences so far. I wonder how many others will have this issue.
---EDIT---
Well, Woot is hands down the least painful RMA I have ever done next to newegg. I am super impressed. They have a customer for life.
*Update
Good news! Contacted Woot and posted in their forum for the Gtab, and I got a response in less than a day. Woot is going to replace the tablet with one dead pixel and cover a shipping label. I've had plenty of online purchase that lead to an RMA.. this was hands down the least painful. I am impressed by Woot.
I will post and update when fully resovled. At that point I can finally root and install a ROM.
On a side note, viewsonic was a pain. I don't plan on buying anything viewsonic in the future.
I bought my gtab from woot as well ..
Ok .. After the first day of playing with my new tablet .. I noticed a dead pixel as well .. Mine is about a 3/4 way up all the way to the right on the very end .. I was thinking, is it worth my time to go through all the bull to send it back and wait for another one.. or just put a nice white background image as my background so I don't see it .. I think I'm just going to deal with it because its not "that" noticeable, the fact that I know its there is the only thing that makes me crazy! .. I can always sell it anyway and nobody would notice unless I pointed it out. Another reason why I don't want to get a new one is because I spent hours rooting and installing a new rom and it would be a waste of my time to do it all over again .. haha
Yep, same thing here. I got on the Woot deal as well. Have a dead pixel about 1/2" down in the middle, horrible place for it.
Just emailed Woot, hopefully they will do the same for me.
***Update***
I have to give it to Woot. Within an hour of my email to them they have sent an RMA and will ship me a replacement before I send mine back.
Also in reading their forums on this deal it seems that some people did in fact get what seems to be either returned or shelf models from Staples. Woot seems to be working hard to get this corrected.
This is my second G Tablet from Woot.
The first came with a bad pixel that I was intending to live with and try to correct. It went from one bad pixel to a whole line of green pixels across the screen and without rooting and flashing a different rom to get a program that actually would load on the G Tablet I gave up and RMA'd it. Pretty amazing service, shipped mine before the return arrived and no shipping either way.
Now my second G Tablet. Plugged it in and charged until the green light came on and booted it, anxious to get all of my apps reloaded. Immediately noticed that there is an outline about half an inch in from the screen edges all the way around the screen, it looks like a puddle on the screen and a lot like burn in on my Plasma TV. I honestly don't want to roll the dice again and get a new one, but I don't know if I should be concerned about the longevity of the product being less with this issue. Most apps you can't see it and it doesn't bother me, I just don't want to have it die on me a few months down the road and not have the option to return it.
I hope there isn't another thread about this specific screen issue, I couldn't find it and any advice would be great.
Try 'Pixel Fixer' from Market.
Also: LCD burn-in, image persistence fixed!
Are you sure thats not the dual layer screen protector that was shipped on earlier units ? perhaps woot got a punch of old stock.
Also might be some trapped humidity from transit (moving between indoor/outdoors) I would run it on highest brightness for a couple of days if that doesn't fix it I would exchange.
Not sure if it is the dual layer screen protector or not.
Being that it is a G-Tablet we don't have access to the true android market without rooting and running a different ROM, which I haven't decided against, but if I am going to be RMAing it i don't want to hack it and take a chance they refuse to replace it. It isn't bothersome, just more concerned about it effecting the longevity of the tab.
Thanks for the replies.
just download the apk of google.
if the tab is still covered by the manufacture warranty then make them fix it. if they cant fix it they will replace it for you then.
I'm having that gross blot on my 10.1. I called Samsung, they told me to go to Best Buy, and Best Buy told me to get ****ed. So I guess I'm on my own. Is there any way to permanently fix it without sending it in?
Sending in is the only way and some have gotten units back and have it happen again.
Two weeks into ownership of my Verizon LTE version the rings appeared. After reading up on the issue I decided to wait it out. I used pressure points along the edges of the screen to coax the rings away and changed the way I carry the tab and the way I place it in the case (eventually changed cases altogether). I'm now 3.5 months in and the rings aren't an issue for me anymore. I'm careful not to put unnecessary pressure on the screen when I carry and store it and I think this goes a long way towards avoiding the issue entirely.
IMO things like never stacking things on the device, always placing it on flat surfaces face up when not in use and using cases that don't put pressure on the chassis to cause deformation are all good best practices to employ with these devices. When I must carry my tab in a bag I make sure its screen faces a larger flat item like a folder or book but that the tab itself isn't swished between books.
I don't know about US Samsung policy
but in Indonesia .. in earlier period, I manage to have my tab replaced new and since then the watermark/NR problem have never appeared anymore ..However, recently I heard that the replacement policy has gone into a service screen replace .. either way should fix the problem
I think the screen problem only appear in the early batch or old stock .. because I never heard such problem anymore in my place especially newer batch

Really, even now?
What's the turnover on getting it back? A week or two?
Not to disappoint you, but this is my case... (CompUSA) Got 2 Galaxy Tabs 32GB version last week. One for my wife, one for me.
My wife's tablet came perfect. (no exchanges)
But my tablet... History...
1st tablet: Came with 2 dead pixels right in the middle of he screen.
2nd tablet: Huge Oil Slick / Newtons Ring on 2nd day of use. (was only solved for a few minutes by putting it on the freezer)
3rd tablet: not 2, not 3, but 4 dead pixels...
4th tablet: no dead pixel, no oil slick YET... UPDATE!!! > > > AGAIN!!! SAME ****... OIL SLICK AGAIN!!! 12/26/11... Going to return it again tomorrow. > > > Returned it, got money back... (CompUSA manager even told me that all 10.1 have been returned because of dead pixels or oil slick issue, and he agree to give me a full refund.) I would say that at least 90% of Galaxy Tab 10.1 are defective. If you got one without this issue, consider it an exception and consider yourself lucky. This is the end for me with the 10.1 Tab, will never recommend it. Yet another update... My wife's tablet also got oil slick on day 15... Returned it too... Money back too... The end...
All tablets were: P7510 UEKF3
Install Dead Pixel Test from the market to check for dead pixels.
That's why I hate BestBuy... I buy all my electronics at Costco or CompUSA.
> > > Last edit (12/31/2011) ... Went to AT&T and got the Samsung Galaxy Tab 8.9 LTE... Finally Happy...
quick fix

Not sure if people are still dealing with this, but I have found that 5 minutes in a refrigerator fixes the issue. And then being careful not to set stuff on it and not applying too much pressure to the middle helps keep it away. i got my slick 3 months ago and it came back once since, but another trip to the fridge and all is well.
Hey whats up guys , i replaced my dell streak screen according to i fix it and everything seemed to go well . The problem i am having is that the screen lights u but i never see the dell logo or anything but a black screen . I am assured that the phone is on because i see the difference between the screen being on and off and i can also see the back lights for the lcd on just do boot up screen. Any suggestions. Btw streaks all the way !
I have done the same thing during my many screen replacements. The large flat ribbon isnt inserted fuly, or you have broken one of the corners on the connector resulting in the pins/contacts not lining up exactly and crossing over.
Careful working with some jewellers screwdrivers will get the ribbon inserted properly, even with a broken connector. If it is broken, use a knife to slice the stick pad from the small ribbon in half, place over the broken section: this has kept mines in "working" order for over a year.
I say working in quotes because I broke my screen for the fourth time a few months ago. Seeing as the avg. price of a screen is now £125, my Samsung Galaxy S3 will be arriving tomorrow and good riddence to Dell who didnt give a crap about this device other than getting your money. dell will never receive another penny from me in my life, may it rot in flea infested armpits of a camel.
thanks man.i will try this tonight.I feel the same way Dell had a opportunity to dominate the 5 inch market yet they crapped on it with a lack of Customer support late adoption of froyo a weirdly weak screen.to date I have had 16 Dell streaks replaced by Dell.those stupid reps probably knew their product was **** never will I purchase another Dell product. Now I have a galaxy note and I'm loving it!

This was the tablet my family got me for my birthday. For January. I preordered and received it sometime after.
It worked fine, then few trouble everyone had showed up; I thought I'd be fine.
I forgave it when it had Bluetooth problem and GPS signal problem.
Then Wi-Fi gets lost, I have screen bleeding on top; I'm fine with that.
Green camera I got it too, then my tablet reads and writes so slow I sat 30 minutes one time waiting for my Winamp (or any music player for that matter) to boot... It was still usable.
Now USB connector won't read (I tried plugging to 3 different PC; no success. They used to work before) and now it refuses to update to JellyBean. It refuses to read my MicroSD card also now.
Sure I rooted, and certainly I dropped it once. If dropping it once from waist height causes all this problem (I had green camera problem little after), I'm gonna have to say I can't swallow my pride anymore.
I'm thinking about returning this thing to Amazon and ask for full refund at this point. I don't want to be stuck with RMA hell most people faced and I want something that just works.
Now, I also have ACH on this... I also read some people were able to get full ACH refund for this; is this true?
I also have a cover and Skinomi on this; have anyone tried returning accessories also? How did that go?
...overall, only question I have is this.
Did I wait too long on return?
On phone with Amazon right now...
First they told me they had option to replace my tablet with new one.
I was okay with that, but then they told me they can't do that anymore.
I'm okay with that so I asked for refund. They sent me labels and now I'm working on returning accessories.
They are currently transferring me to 3rd Party Specialist so I can return the accessories also.
(Attempting to return the case, AHD Insurance, and the Skinomi)
Only thing I would feel bad for I guess is the screen protectors. Skinomi is best protector I bought indeed...
It still looks good through all the possible wear and tear I put through;
Regular GNexus screen protector I bought with Verizon fell apart once and I had to replace it;
Phone is younger then the tablet to make matters worse lol
I'll keep you guys posted but this made me realize few things:
1. I need to buy more from Amazon (lol)
2. Skinomi is definitely worth the money
3. I don't know if I can trust Asus anymore after Prime failed on me this hard.
