Noob question.. - Thunderbolt Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Hey guys, I had my last phone rooted (mt3g) but I couldnt stand the instability of CM so I decided to not root this one.....but now Im bored since Ive had it since release so Id like to at least flash a kernal so I can play with overclock. My question is can I root and continue to use the stock sense and flash a kernal for overclocking? If so what is the most stable and recommended kernal out? Thanks.

Use adrynalynes or imoseyons. Pretty easy to find the most popular. Look at the threads.
Rooting will wipe your phone anyway might as well flash a Rom, at least to get rid of bloat. All the froyo ones are very stable and have some nice tweaks. I like bamf best.

This is good advice right here. The other piece of advice is that you should stick with a Froyo-based ROM/kernel/radio for now. Theory is that GB radio creates bricked phones (incredibly low percentage chance of it happening but why risk it if you're not a risky type?).
Das Bamf and Perfect Storm are the two I would recommend. I prefer Imoseyon's kernels but Adrynalyne's are great too. Drod's are also good but not as popular (he had some of the first ones out there, though, and used to be the best).

I thought the same thing when I picked up my phone...
Started lurking on here... And 6 hours into ownership I was rooted and running Das BAMF. I would root, and try out one of the froyo roms. My favorite so far is Das BAMF.

Just want to throw my 2 cents in and recommend the Liquid Thundersense ROM. I just flashed 1.5 today and am thoroughly impressed. (My goals were simply battery life improvement and debloat.)
I flashed Imo's sweet, tweakable kernel though, IIRC, the ROM may actually come with it. Either way, between the two the performance and battery life are already such an improvement over stock that I probably won't bother with other ROMs until a stable Gingerbread one is available — I was spoiled coming from a myTouch 4G running CM7.
That said, if Liquid Thundersense has a weak spot, it's the default theme. It's not bad but, like I said, CM7's slick GB+ADWlauncher UI spoiled me...
XDA Premium on Tbolt. That is all.

I am most stable with bamf 1.6.2, tried to upgrade to 1.7 but when doing a restore with titanium, things seem to go a bit awkward. When I get a chance I'll probably do a clean install of bamf 1.7 remix or stripped with apps/data without the system apps. I've been running without 4g for best battery life. LTE seems to bring my battery life to its knees (<8 hours with decent usage).

GSB v 2.x or Ginger Tazz xx???

Can anyone here the boards give me some feedback of their experience with either ROM?
I would love to know because I wanna run GB on my lil ol eris and cant decide whether I want vanilla or a tweaked version.
Much thanks in advance, Jeff
GSB for me
Ever since I first put GSB on my phone (can't remember which version) I haven't moved to anything else. I really love it. I have also been wondering what the differences between GSB and Ginger Tazz are, though...so if anyone has used both - which do you prefer?
I started right with GSB from 2.1. I haven't tried any other roms but in a day ive seen 3 updates. Its nice to have solid support.
Id be interested to see side by side metrics. Id love to see a ginger sense ROM

ive ran both. each are great roms. i settled on gintazz
i great great battery life and my phone is super fast and i havent had one issue
with it since using gintazz.
you should try both and choose for yourself you really cant go wrong
Is it hard to switch between ROMs or same process? Just data +dalvik and flash
Sent from my Eris ADR6200 using XDA App
Yup just date/dalvik wipe. Act. I font think I ever rid a dalvik wipe with a data wipe, wont hurt though. I switch between Roms a lot. I like to check everything out

I've used both, but I've been with GSB for the most part and haven't tried a recent version of Ginger-Tazz so I can't really give a review; other people seem to love it just fine.
i switched from GSB to v20 ginger-tazz. i like the simple integration with not too many custom launcher add ones. (adw vs launcher pro)
Love ginger tazz its has great battery life, a great thread with awesome ppl and its fast.

I first had gsb but I tryed Ginger tazz & I like it alot.haven't had any issues.its faster &just runs smoother.

i
i use ginger it has some nice feq
I've ran both and have settled with Ginger Tazz. Its very fast and I like not haveing all the CM stuff. Its also small so you have lots of memory left over. Haha.
But ya. I run that with the stock launcher and overclocked at 710 (maybe 729) and it just goes. Battery life it pretty great to and with the v3 update its supposed to be better than before (some people had issues with battery on v2, i stayed on v1 and did well)
EDIT: I wrote this assuming you were asking about GSB and the AOSP Ginger Tazz. If not sorry. But thats your review for those two.
I JUST flashed the AOSP Gingertazz ROM this morning and so far I love it. So far it is noticeably faster than GSB - probably because some of the bloatware is removed. I'll give it a few days so I can add a bunch of my own bloat and see how it goes.
Though I've really loved all the ROMs I've used so far - can't say enough how appreciative I am for the work the devs have done and continue to do to improve this 'end-of-life' Eris! I don't really even think about my next phone anymore since rooting a few months ago.

I want ditto the sentiment. It has been refreshing to see life breathed into my phone after repeated attempts to make the stock version work. Thanks deb's for making my update in October a mute point.

I've been running GSB since version 2.0 I think. It's been running very well with very few issues, which I suspect wouldn't be happening if I would follow shed's instructions to wipe data before loading each new release. Today, I decided to give GingerTazz a shot. I tried out the current version 22. GingerTazz seems like a pretty solid ROM, but I missed a few of the bells and whistles of GSB and how snappy GSB is, even with all the stuff I've loaded on it. Both of these guys are top notch in my book, and I will pay attention to which phones they and Kaos use to determine which phone I get next. My recommendation, based on my experience and preferences =GSB.

Why Gingerbread?

Can someone tell me where all the hype is about gingerbread besides having a tbolt n showing people that you have sw version 2.3? I just don't get it. Yeah sure it looks cool, but as we all know other Roms like BAMF (Sense or not) is just way sicker/snappier and more reliable. Sure all these GB Roms are in their early stages, but like I said, their more basic and the only true benefit I've been reading that people seem to be really concerned about is Netflix working. Obviously everyone has an opinion (like I'm expressing mine) just curious why GB has soooo much hype. Personally, with running BAMF 1.2 with Adryns 4.4.7 amongst other performance tweeks (I/O scheduler sertings, CPU settings without SetCpu etc...) My tbolt couldn't be more sick. So freaking snappy, great battery life, look n feel is so nasty that I just don't get the GB Hype... If netflix gets on this bad boy, I'd be more than set. Like I said. All personal opinion, but some good pointers/insight might help me understand. Until then, I'm more than content with my ridiculous fast more than stable Tbolt. Even if it doesn't "say 2.3.*..."

I admire your will power, for me I guess it was just wanting to try the newest thing and Sense 2.1. However i flashed the gingeritis III rom and it soft bricked my phone, would go to boot screen and at the end it would say Enjoy your HTC Thunderbolt and never get past that. I'm not saying there is anything wrong with the ROM because according to the thread several people have this working just fine on their phone. I did follow the instructions to the letter but it didn't work, luckily I was able to restore my latest backup back to Das Bamf 1.6.3 remix.......WHEW!
I had a few Gingerbread ROMs on my OG Droid and I hated them. The ROMs were well developed and mature by the time I replaced the phone, but 2.3 in general was just super buggy and annoying. Stability, speed and battery life were a mess compared to the 2.2 ROMs on that phone. I don't know how much different it is on the T-Bolt as I haven't rooted mine yet, but from my experience, Gingerbread is stale right now. Too many problems to be worth the relatively minor upgrades.
You can't judge GB based on the roms made from this leak. The people using it now are either trying to help devs, curious, or just interested in the newest thing. Once GB got figured out for my D1 it drastically improved performance and battery life, as well as offered new features.
This leak is an alpha type of product, and there will be releases that are much more finely tuned and smooth. GB has many "unseen" improvements like JIT, as well as cosmetic and functional changes. Once some good stable releases of GB come out, it will be much more appealing. I do agree about the current Froyo roms being VERY good though. The BAMF roms and lean kernel have this thing working at near perfection...so I will be waiting for the "clean" GB roms to come out for my next daily driver.

[Q] Everyone's favorite custom rom?

I am finally looking at flashing away from stock..anyone care to tell me whats your favorite custom roms and benefits of each or why you like them?
bamf 2.0-5 with the mr2 radio has been the most stable rom for me.. and i love the sense 3.0 lockscreen!
i was reading that...Im not really sure i wanna flash the radios that people are bricking their phones with....plus, i use my camera. ALOT. so if that don't work, thats a major deal breaker.

From what I read here it's not the radio. I just flashed MR2 and Gingeritis IX. So far everything is running smooth.
Gingeritis IX
wait...so its not the radio thats bricking? now i really dunno if wanna use it.
but still. the camera....
The 3.0 camera doesn't work, but team BAMF provides a flashable 2.1 camera app that does.

I'm loving Th3oryofGinger/Candy. Great battery life, GPS, Wifi, camera all work. MR2 radio, but it was confirmed last night that the radio isn't what's causing bricks.
You will get a different opinion from each person. Every rom has its quirks. Read the rom OP and decide which features & theme work best for you.

used liquid thundersense for the longest time, then recently made the switch to GB. now i'm running candy with imo's kernel, and love it.
the gps on candy has been absolutely flawless, finds my location almost instantly even indoors, whereas, on liquid i had some issues with it not finding me, even outdoors.
i think thundersense had the edge with slightly bettery battery life (used imo's froyo kernel for liquid as well), but candy still easily makes through my whole day with moderate use without needing a recharge.
so far, candy looks to be an incredible daily driver for me, everything just runs great, no issues that i've found yet.

i have been using candy v3.5..its gingerbread sense with a few tweaks..but smooth fast and no reboots for days..best rom out at the moment..i really liked gingervitis till chingy seemed to give up on ginger for awhile...hopefully i will see him return...
I'm running a de-Sensed version of Th3ory's ROM with the MR2 radio and dreamkernel and I haven't had any issues whatsoever. YMMV. Find what works for you!
i am running Tesla Coil 1.7.1. I love it because it looks like stock gingerbread.

Most Stable, Least Quirky ROM now?

Hello all,
I was just wondering what your impressions were re, the most stable ROM out now, the one with the least issues. Is there one that seems to be most hassle-free? I'm not nessasarily looking for a lot of bells and whistles...
Thanks!
Used to enjoy Theory's ROMs but felt that every few weeks he'd discontinue a ROM and release a new one. If you want a sense ROM that has a good following, I'm gonna be taking a look at SynergyROM, or if you want a non-sense ROM (AKA AOSP) I'd go CM7 (CynergyMod 7).
I'm aosp fan personally. I've used Cyanogenmod extensively, as well as Omgb. I'm currently running TheROM V4 and it is rock solid stable and very responsive. Not many bells and whistles. Just vanilla gingerbread.
It depends on what you want aosp or sense
For me I'm an aosp girl I'm running cyanogenmod 7 v1.7 loving it and. Ill give the kernel I'm using for battery life
If I don't want aosp anymore I always go to. http://teambamf.net/
I love das bamf! or if not go to http://themikmik.com/forumdisplay.php?1004-HTC-Thunderbolt-Developer-Forum I personal really like chingy's roms
I don't like Droid theory just saying
If you like sense, I really like Chingy's Gingeritis 3D.
Second vote for Gingeritis 3D. Stable and great battery life if you just use better governors.
Definitely the wrong forum, bro.
been rocking cleantheory to shiftsense for the past two weeks. both have been rock solid. DT is stopping development though, so take it for whatever that means. i think at some point all ROMS eventually lose development. hopefully whatever you choose is good enough for your daily driver if you dont like flashing over and over.
ShiftS3ns3 by DroidTho3ry rocks - give it a shot.
I think I'm going to give Gingeritis 3D a try. I'm not a pro at flashing new ROMs... i've only done it once (running BAMF 1.3 now). Is there anything special I should do? Is it just like flashing the BAMF ROM? (can I do it from ROM Manager?)
Thanks!

DT mentioned that he's taking a break, so hopefully he won't be gone too long. His work is better than stock.. HTC ought to hire him and get out of his way.
If you want Sense ROM, can't go wrong with SkyRaider Preview 2 or ShiftS3NS3.
If you want AOSP based ROM, SHIFTAO5P hasn't given me any problems whatsoever.
If you can live without the 3d, skyraider preview 2 is rock solid.

FWIW, I have been pretty pleased with the Synergy ROMs and I'd be running one now but...... I was one who fell victim to either the ROM Manager update or the CWM update and now cannot restore any of my backups. I tried various earlier CWMs w/o success and finally un-rooted, installed stock, did the OTA update and I'm back 100% stock.
I mention this because it's relevent to the question..... Battery life is good, the stability is excellent and, once customized to my liking, I really can't see much difference other than the "billions and billions" of crap apps VZW and HTC have added to the phone. If I could get rid of them I'd be just fine with the stock ROM believe it or not!
I'll probably re-root at some point and it's VERY likely I'll go back to the Synergy ROM because it works. I've had rebooting problems with other ROMs I've tried and I'm no longer in a mood to experiment, maybe later?
OK, it's later. I rooted, using Revolutionary, used Titanium backup to remove VZWs crapware and then figured why not? and installed the latest Synergy ROM.
I guess I just can't live with a non-rooted phone for 24 hours..... <sigh>
i keep trying out different roms all the time(sense & aosp based) and find that i'll keep going back to Synergy. it seems the most stable just i having issues with settling with just one rom.
Everyone has a different opinion on what stable is. I think CM7 is plenty stable, but there are those that disagree for whatever logical/illogical reason. Mainly, if you aren't prepared to encounter issues either brought up by your own experimenting or those of the ROM developer, I would stay with what the phone came with and be happy you have a phone that (sort of) works
If you are more brave, then read on.
If you read the comments about most ROMs, there is no such thing as a 100% infallible, will never ever let you down, stable ROM. ROMs are generally bleeding edge and users accept the fact they may have bugs in exchange for the phone doing more than what HTC and verizon allowed them to do. However, ignore most comments, because those are generally just people that screwed something up either knowingly or unknowingly. Like people that go the the hospital (for those that have family members that work at one), not everyone is ready to admit they did something stupid and have it on public display

Skyraider with Ziggy's kernel is EXACTLY this. It has average to good battery life though. Everything works, including it being compatible with call recording and incredicontrol (voltage control app). It also has the notification tweaks that no one has quite duplicated and I have grown to love.
I find Synergy to be an excellent rom as well, but the themes available do not suit me at all. It does support everything with good battery life and also adds HTC Hub which is awesome. It also has DConfig, which I just have not gotten a great benefit from but I guess some might.
The theory sense rom was smooth as silk, and seemed to be a happy medium between the first two I posted.
Chingy's rom is VERY slick, but very vanilla. The fact that it is Odexed makes theming harder I think, but for me that means I cannot replace the HTC browser with the AOSP one, and I HATE THE SENSE BROWSER lol.
ALL AOSP roms seem to have squashed most of the crappy battery issues and get great battery life now. This added to a FAR FAR FAR better bluetooth stack for better use with wireless devices like Jawbone, AND compatability with PS3 hardware make them an awesome choice. The ONLY problem is the lack of reliable network location. This means google maps works perfect, but your web browser can and will put you across the world sometimes, as well as weather apps etc. This rules it out for me for now.
Hope that helps
Shifts3ns3 has been the best for me, while I liked synergy, it had more bugs and seemed much slower to me, shift has the useful 3.0 features without the slowdown of a full sense 3.0 rom

whats better than bionix as of now?

what do you guys think is better than TW that i should try, miui?
Miui was pretty cool. Visually appealing but for me some apps didnt work and battery life sucked. I am using phiremod 2.0. It's a cm7 that in my opinion apart from bionix is the best rom I've tried I get great battery life and its really fast and reliable. I've been on it for about 3 months

If you want a good quality 2.2, check out Toxic8 or Deranged9. Both excellent ROMs with great support and outstanding battery life.
If you want the latest then ICS Passion is where it is at but make sure you are comfortable flashing ROMs, Odin and bootloaders. Oh and read, read, read.
I've been using ics passion 10.6 its great! no rom gives good battery life for me but this isn't any worse than stock 2.2 battery life
I am new to this stuff, but I flashed Zendroid a few days ago and love it. Super solid, no glitches at all yet. I have 25% battery right now after a full day's use and that never happened on stock. I love it, super clean, super smooth. I can't speak to "better" than bionix as I haven't tried that ROM yet. Just know that Zendroid is awesome.
I was on bionix 1.3.1 and was hesitant to try ics passion but the rom is smoother than I ever imagined.
Ok so I was looking at ics, and there's a ton where can get the best rom and kernels or is there a good site I can read about it?

Just look for the "ICS Passion v11" thread in the Development sub-forum. I recommend the stock kernel, only because it lags for me if I use Eugene's. Results may vary though, so you should try both and see which works best for you.

I think it really depends on the features that you're looking for. Personally, I don't really see the necessity to jump ship to a GB or ICS rom for the Vibrant just yet (if ever). Someone posted a pretty legit list on Fishman's mod noting the differences between Android versions that you should check out to see if updating is worth it for you.
+1 for bionix from me..
ICS Passion v11 is pretty sleek, but since there's no 1080p video recording I may have to revert back to Bionix.
The Vibrant is a better video recorder than my Flip- I'm not sure why they would cripple the video.
360 productions make some great miui roms. I prefer lithium. you could give those a try
I've been using bionix nextgen v2 for a long long time, and it's fantastic but I'd really like to make the jump to a GB rom.
Mainly because I can't stand the fact that my CM7 Nook Color can run apps that my Galaxy S class phone can't.
Only GB ROM I've tried so far was the first stable CM7 version, but no matter what I tried I couldn't get my GPS to work _at all_. Since I actually make use of my GPS on a fairly regular basis I went back to bionix nextgen.
Can anyone recommend GB or ICS roms that have good GPS performance (meaning they don't have that "turn off GPS once and you have to reboot to get it back" issue)? Been browsing through the roms listed in the dev forum, but I'd also like some extremely fresh personal feedback from other users here.
Thanks in advance all.

Would also like to know whether such ROM (GB with working GPS) exists...
Since my original post above I've switched to ICS Euphoria. It does have the GPS off = reboot to use it problem, but honestly leaving the GPS switched on all the time does not seem to have a serious impact on my battery life vs what I was getting before. In the end I'm fine making that tradeoff in order to be on modern firmware. ICS is _awesome_ and I don't see myself going back.
