Hey, sorry if this is the wrong place for this question. I am due for an upgrade soon, I currently have the droid eris with Workshed's amazing gingerbread rom. I have very much enjoyed the phone and being able to play around with customizing and flashing roms. I have a few questions about the new phones coming out and was hoping some of you with more knowledge would be able to help me.
What is the difference between single core and dual core and is it necessary to have a dual core if i primarily use my phone for texting, web surfing and phone calls?
what phone would you recommend to get. I am right now between the Droid Bionic, Samsung Stealth (Charge) and the LG Revolution.
thank you so much

Once Android is optimized for multi-core processors, the OS could make great use of multiple threads (like multitasking, but just in the CPU). Either using multiple threads for one task/program, or one core per program, so the same core doesn't have to switch back and forth as much. This is a simplistic explanation. In the end, the more cores the better, just like on a desktop or laptop computer.
From your proposed usage, no I wouldn't say that it's necessary to have a dual core. I don't know anything about those three phones although of course I've heard of them. I plan on staying loyal to HTC, so I would probably get the Thunderbolt.
Motorola phones are harder or sometimes impossible to root from what I've read, so I would definitely avoid them. Now that I'm spoiled by rooting, I never want to be forced on run stock if I don't have to, even if it is a better performing phone to begin with. Not when I know I can make it even better.
Hello everyone, I have faithfully used my eris since its release and now that I have had an upgrade available for use for quite a while, i've been getting antsy. I really would like to get an htc phone for the sense experience (i use footprints quite often), but also really like the screen on the droid charge and the dual core-y goodness of the dx2 (but hate that terrible motoblur and locked bootloader). I want to wait for the bionic, but really dont want a motorola phone.
I live near detroit, so I do have 4g support in my area, but how much of a speed difference does that make? I realize numbers-wise, 4g is a huge difference, but in actual real world performance, is it necessary? I feel that I barely use my eris now that I have my xoom (wifi only) and the only reason I think I would use a 4g phone would be to tether it to my xoom. The biggest issue i see is verizon starting to crack down on tethering and that in a few months I will be out tethering and a phone I am not particularly fond of.
Basically what it comes down to is that right now, I use my eris for texting, calls, quick browsing (for at the store or wherever, when i dont have my xoom with me), and basic apps such as weather and alarms. I would like to think that if I got a 4g phone, I still wouldnt use it to the best of its abilities just because i enjoy the tablet experience my xoom brings; leaving me with a phone that I use for the same things I use my eris for, but with worse battery life and such. I have always wanted to get the most cutting edge tech, but right now (and hopefully for the next 2 years ) I cant justify getting a 4g phone just for the 4g capabilities.
TLDR: Knowing I have 4g in my area and a xoom, which phone would you recommend?
PS: How's that droid commando?
If you have a Tegra tablet, which you admittedly use a lot more than your Eris, I don't think you really need a dual-core phone that badly, unless you'll be gaming a lot on your new phone. I suggest either the Droid Charge or the Thunderbolt, with my preference being the Charge. Verizon's 4G LTE is a lot faster than 3G, you want to have it if it's available to you, and both the Thunderbolt and Droid Charge will feel as fast as light compared to your Eris. I like the Charge because it has better battery life and a great looking SAMOLED+ display, but if you're a big Sense/HTC fan, you might prefer the Thunderbolt.
I like Moto phones, but no need to settle for a locked bootloader and a dual-core (and Blur until root comes to strip it out) when you'll be fine with a single core and freedom.

Why not the Droid Incredible 2? It's not 4G or dual core, but it seems to have everything that you want otherwise.
I was definitely looking at the incredible 2, do u have any experience with it?
The reason i wasn't too sure about the current 4g offerings were my distrust of most samsung products (had a glyde a while back and it was horrible) and haven't really had many experiences with LG products (other than my original env) I wish verizon would get an htc device with sense 3.0, as that is a huge deal for me. If what i have read is correct, both the thunderbolt and the incredible 2 have had sense 3.0 ported to them, but aren't the fastest (please correct me if i am wrong).
Sense 3.0 stock devices coming to verizon soon would be awesome, but i haven't heard any yet.

No, I still own and use an Eris. However, based on your typical use, based on your doubts about needing 3G, based on your preference for HTC products with the Sense launcher, you may want to go into a store and play around with one.
Sorry i didn't reply for a bit, but i've decided to stick it out with my eris until the sgs2 or bionic (but i really want the sgs2) come out. I flashed back to a 2.1 rom and it has been (in my experience) a lot faster than the cm7 rom i was on, making me less irritated and less impatient for a new phone. Thanks for all the help tho everyone

The HTC Vigor has certainly peaked my interest lately since I really like HTC phones better over Motorola or Samsung.
Rumors are saying it will have a 4.3″ 720p HD screen (1280×720 resolution), with a 1.5GHz dual-core processor, 1GB RAM, 16GB internal storage, 8MP rear cam, 2MP front, Android 2.3.4 and will be similar in size and shape to the Thunderbolt, but without the kickstand.
Hey guys, been out for a good minute, but I'm about to buy a new phone. I had been wanting the HTC thunderbolt, as I've had good success hacking other htc phones.
I just wanted to make sure that its a good phone for modding
If anyone has any other suggestions on what I should buy, I'll listen.
Maybe the Bionic?
I just wanna make sure theres no bs blocks or anything that will stop me from modding it to my heart's content, and that theres plenty of roms and all that out there already.
(I would do all this searching myself but ive been working 18-20hrs past few days and I need some sleep, and u guys probably allready know all this)
Thanks
Why not wait for the Galaxy Nexus? I know its not HTC, but still...
cuz i need one this week. thursday at the latest. how long till the nexus comes out?

It comes out in November 2011.
droid charge is better than the thunderbolt. they're both noticeably weaker than any modern phones, but the thunderbolt is generally regarded as a poor investment. Charge has a pretty good development community.
From the benchmarks Ive seen, the charge isn't better than it at all. But the Droid Bionic is in many ways. Mostly with it being a dual core processor, and more ram.
I went in to a Verizon store today to check em out first hand, and I'm torn between the two. I really do like htc sense, and I might eventually change it, but there are enough skins and sense based roms available to keep me happy. However, the Bionic scored like 2400 on quadrant, and its a bit snappier.
But it doesn't have sense on it, oh, and it also doesn't quite have the "quality" feel to it that most HTC phones have. its a bit too light and feels a bit like cheap plastic. idk. but its definitely faster.
Any suggestions guys?
Thunderbolt or Droid Bionic?
Does the bionic have a big modding community?
Reason I didn't mention the bionic is that not only does it not have a good devoloping community, rooted Verizon motoblur devices (not ROM'd ones tho) have a really bad track record of getting majority screwed up every time there's a software update. It also has a horrible looking pentile display.
Oh, and it has a locked bootloader too, so don't expect a lot of ROMs for quite a while.
EDIT: actually, i take that back - the bionic apparently has CM7 moving along very nicely.
I am an AT&T wireless user and I am trying to decide which android phone to go with. I am a former Verizon user and was quite fond of the Motorola line of Droids... I had the Droid 2, Droid X and finally the Droid Bionic. Price is not an issue for me at the moment and I am seeing a phone that has decent battery life, a wide variety of customizability and ease of use when it comes to rooting and installing roms. Basically I am looking for a phone that can handle my desire to tweak the most out of it and yet is nearly unbrickable and has a good pool of developers working with said devices. These are the phones I am considering, please share your opinions and advice in regards to these devices.
Motorola Atrix 2
Samsung Galaxy S II
HTC Vivid
Thank you for any and all input and I hope I have posted this in the right forum.
I wouldnt go for the HTC, it seems (just from browsing through forums), that they are quite hard to mod, with their locked NAND partitions and bootloaders that must be downgraded in order to flash new roms. (correct me if im wrong someone). I would go with the s2, i have a samsung and they are seriously easy to mod, plus the s2 should have a ton of devs working with it and lots of mods/roms, concidering its popularity everywhere.
Yes, we now have root. But...
1. We still don't have ROMs cooked as per the chefs/devs choice
2. We don't have (official) ICS yet,
3. The activity is less in the ROM section as compared to other phones, except for a couple of ICS ROMs tweaked here and there.
I don't know and I am asking, do we have a bootloader unlocked yet? If not, then it's point number 4.
I agree the phone is fairly new, but not like its getting younger by the day.
Quad-Core phones are already here, and companies slowly phasing out Dual-Cores. Now where do we go from here.
I am just trying to understand if I have made an investment or a mistake.
The question is, do we realy need an Quad-Core in our Phones or is just the industrie telling us, that we need a Quad in our Phones...
Gesendet von meinem XT910 mit Tapatalk 2
That's not the point. The point is, will we see good Devs/Chefs working on ROMs or not, porting various devices' UI?
I see some good Devs working for the RazR @ the Moment.
Just relax and see, what's coming with the official ICS...
Gesendet von meinem XT910 mit Tapatalk 2
No one is phasing out dual core processors. Yes, there are some quad cores. Yes, there will be more. But you don't need 4 cores for a good phone experience unless you're a hardcore gamer. And frankly, if you're a hardcore gamer, why are you using a phone?
The Nokia Lumia 900 uses a single core processor and it runs WP7 silky smooth. Of course a dual core will perform better when you're multitasking, but 4 cores is a bit much.
There's plenty of life left in the Razr. I think, at this point, we're all waiting for the official ICS release slated for later this month. I expect a flurry of activity once it's out in the wild.
Fingers crossed and hopes high. I really wanted to flash ROMs from different devices and push the phone to its limits.
And I agree, lets just wait and watch.
Its like having a quadcore pc when the only thing you use it for is internet browsing
the main thing that makes me want to upgrade/change my mobile phones is the battery life not how many cpu cores that will drain the battery even faster
If anything the Razr maxx is the best phone on the market and will be for 2012 it will still beat the Samsung Galaxy S3 for battery life and iphone5 will just be another shiny **** that breaks when you drop it
Im planning on either trading my Razr in for razr maxx or upgrading the battery with the kits available
Iv had almost every high end mobile on the market and im happy with the Razr
I am selling my htc one x as ui is laggy, battery lasts just a day depending on how much the screen is used. Its quad core... you'd never know. The only thing ill miss is the screen.
I just bought my razr as the build and materials feels great, the ui is fast with no lag, the speaker is loud. Looking forward to the laptop dock with ics.
Dont get hung up on quad core... the razr is much faster for every day use.

Its all about the boot loader, until it is bypassed/unlocked any custom rom has to be built atop the stock kernel. My advice is to donate and encourage the devs already trying to bypass it and find other devs that have already done it on similar phones and offer donations or start a fund to equip the dev with a razr to work on, whatever's needed to further the cause. Once we can boot custom kernels, cm7/cm9, miui, whatever ...will all follow.

Again guys, I am not talking about Quad-core vs Dual core. I am talking about the dev of this phone irrespective of the no. of cores in the phone.

Now that makes sense. So zeroing down on the issue, it is the bootloader. But may I ask, my father has a Sony Ericsson X10 and the phone is very much rooted, BUT the bootloader isn't unlocked. But I was still able to flash a cool Xperia S ROM on it...so how come the bootloader allowed??

Why buy a RAZR if you just want some other devices UI on it?
Work on these phones is being done but just because it's not happening as fast as people want it to, doesn't mean it's not happening. ICS will come soon enough and devs are currently working on ROMs built from the ICS leaks.
DHacker from droidhive.com and hash are currently working on getting AOKP running fully on the .84 leak.
Stuff is happening, it's just that devs aren't posting every little thing they do.
Lol no one needs a quad-core processor. I've just moved from my old N900 to the XT910 and let me tell you, this is phone is just fast... Everything is smooth even gaming, browsing and listening to music all at the same time.

I dont know much about sony phones, it could be a bootloader bypass, or the kernels could be similar enough that its tweaked to boot up like hashcodes safestrap enables us to boot custom roms, but with the limitation of having to work around the stock kernel.

If you don't want to run one of the roms mentioned ( you'll find more on droidhive than xda). With root you can freeze the bloat ware and run a 3rd party launcher, ie adw, go launcher, launcher pro plus, etc.

Honestly I didn't buy my RAZR maxx to heavily mod. I spent 3 years w android and got burnt out. I bought my maxx because I felt that Motorola build quality and decent specs would quench my thirst. I did however try the .75 ics leak and was very impressed. I have root access on the stock .181 I am currently on and really don't use anything root.
All this being said, the RAZR is just like all the moto phones that came after the og DROID. It is and will forever be locked until Motorola frees it. No one has cracked them. No one is going to. People are supposedly getting close but all sorts of bugs. If moto unlocks then it will be smooth and work perfect. But it hasn't happened yet and with the possibility of the government contract w moto to supply phones for them...there is no way its getting free.
So, not to be rude, but you are fighting a losing battle. You are not a dev. You are a consumer like myself. If you want a flashaholic phone, grab a nexus. They have a working theme engine now w cm9 and its looking pretty fresh. I will stick w this RAZR because once It gets official ics I will not need root. Disabling apps freezes them. I can take screenshots. Have a phone that lasts all day and never reboots. Screws up. Acts crazy. Drops calls. Gets great data speeds and knocks **** out.
So become a dev and do the impossible that has been getting worked on for years...or get over it, enjoy a great phone, or sell that bish and get what fits your needs.

With a bootloader bypass, which has been done recently on other moto phones, and with moto being legally obliged to release a significant amount of there source code under the gpl license, its only a matter of time before we have as almost as much if not all the freedom of a Nexus
Sent from my DROID RAZR using xda premium
That would be great but I am not getting my hopes up. Its compliance. That's kinda like some of the old laws like having a mustache in certain parts of Texas can get you arrested. Gpl clearly doesn't care or else these companies would be forced to comply...which hasn't happened. They comply when they feel like it
