Moved to General. Please don't open threads to ask questions in development.
You can unroot. Stock ROMs exist here which can be flashed via ODIN, and which will remove root. If you are on O2 UK branded ROM, it is also available.
To reset the number of "unsigned" ROMs flashed though, you need to use a USB Jig (which is a resistor and a USB plug).
See http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1064894 for re-branding and unrooting an O2 model, and another thread is somewhere for restoring the stock firmware for a non branded one.
See http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1068522 to reset the counter in download mode.

Current problem with rooting is that there is a counter for number of flashed custom kernels inside the phone. When you root, that number goes up. No info yet on how to reset the counter, so it's possible that it could affect your warranty. (Unlikely, but possible) http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1068522 - Kind of difficult though, hopefully an easier way comes along!
Unrooting would be done by flashing back a stock Samsung kernel/rom.
Advantages to rooting are currently:
1) Removing system apps that you can't remove normally.
2) Run certain apps that require root. (Not many of these, really)
3) Modify the framework.apk which let's you do things like skin some of the UI, such as changing battery meters and that.

Eh? You can reset the counter now mate
Shove a USB Jig from an SGS 1 into the USB port and it should reset and remove the yellow warning, even telling you that a custom kernel is an original binary... See http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1068522
Thanks for your replies everyone

One method to root. Thread is stuck on development area.
One method to unroot. Thread is in development. You flash stock rom via odin and then reset counter with a jig

You can buy a jig online or make one. It's a single resistor and a usb connector. Solder them together correctly and done
Difficulty to someone with the slightest electronics experience is zero. I'm going to pop one together tomorrow and it will likely take about 4 minutes, most of which waiting on soldering equipment to heat up.

Unroot - just flash one of the stock ROMs.
Stop samsung knowing of the flash? It's the "reset counter" thread.
Just a Question...
If i just Root the Stock ROM without flashing any other Custom roms as I can live with stock.. will that have any effect on Flash Counters?.. I dont want to void warranty ...So i can flash stock rom again..
If I flash stock roms.. counters will run or will not be effected?
will not be affected.
I have a question,
I rooted my device and now i have to send it in for service.
I have flashed in a stock rom and reseted the counter but when i check my info in settings it says

I have tried with super one click but i only get
Getting model...
GT-I9100
OK 0,03s
Getting version...
XWKF3
OK 0,02s
Not supported!

Any ideas how to get rid of the [email protected] in the end of the info?

That has nothing to do with root on your phone
I'm not sure but I think it is related to the build machine used to build the kernel.
You unroot by downloading the latest official firmware for you region/carrier. If that is done then you're fine.
Ok, since i downloaded the KF3 rom from this http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1075278 thread it should be fine to turn the phone in for service, without they come back to me and say my root ruined my menubutton which have stopped working

well, there is a counter counting how many insecure kernels have been downloaded, you need the USB-jig to reset that, but in many cases the service centers doesn't check this at service.
I have already reseted the counter with a usb-jig and i have no yellow triangle or anything like that so it looks like everything is stock exept the kernel version.
hopefully they won´t even check it and repair it under warranty.
Sorry to bump thread. I flashed to stock firmware with odin3 but I think it is still rooted because the unlock tool, which requires phone to be rooted, still works. How do I unroot?
Flash full stock firmware = unroot if used the Chainfire CWM and Root method .

What is "flash one of the stock roms"?
I already rooted my Galaxy S2 now I would like to unroot it (I add certain programs for superuser, so that I would be able to run them as root while unrooted).
What rom should I get? Considering my kernel is XWKDD-CL16 ...

Yes. You can always flash the official firmwares. However, you'll need to root it again when you do.
IF u have updated firmware KE2 can u root like normal still? or do u have to downgrade first?
if you are wanting to upgrade officially, just do it through Kies. you will loose your root, but you can re-root and it will keep the latest firmware upgrade [like KE2]
Rumble
KE2 root then upgrade kernel to KE2 after root .
If you have an update through Kies or the original phone firmware then Kies is your update path .
If you have flashed firmware via Odin then you will usually find that codes no longer match and Kies has no firmware for the codes on the phone .
jje
So u can put whatewer firmware u want in ur phone ? How i can see my firmware version , in seting about it say xxkd9 ^^ i dont know whats that and how i can buck it up leater :/ When i conect to kies it say this device canot be updated
OK! Thanks all for your replies!
So, now as I am on a rooted device, when I plug my phone to the computer and it finds an official firmware via Kies, I can safely install it without manually taking the root away? This is done by automatic? That's how I understand. It's not like my phone is angry and punished me by bricking?
Thanks again.
Seems pretty difficult to brick the SGS2. I bought a little jig off ebay for £4 which automatically puts the device into download mode - useful even if the three-button method doesn't work. Also resets the custom binary count
What happens to my root exclusive apps if a firmware update deletes the root access?
Flashed KE7....
...my first post.
So I flashed KE7 (newest firmware), ...I originally had Root on the KE2, as per the instructions in the ROM & Developers Section for the SGS2........after flashing KE7 I still have root, AND KE7, with no yellow triangle.
I am not complaing just pleasantly surprised I did not have to Re-Root....anyone else had this.
Since I cannot post in the Development section yet I thought I would comment here.
Also would like to say what a fantastic job the guys developing are doing on these sites, you provide alot of geeks and non-geeks with many happy evenings.

I just ordered mine and started reading more about Android. So may i ask what is KE2 and KE7? The SGII hasnt been out for more then a month or two i think so is there already several updates?
If so what do they add? very curious
KE2 and 7 are just firmware updates from Samsung, am not sure if they are generic or related to specific markets. KE7 works for me, I still have root and now I have the extra 4mb (833 to 837 mb)....so something worked.

Not sure if yours came with KE7 but if you upgraded did you loose all your data/settings? Comming from iPhone i'm used to loose them all when flashing but then i can simply connect to iTunes and restore everything just the way it was (game saves, all phone settings, appz&games, contact etc).
How is this achieved in Android enviroment (SGII) when you flash a new firmware?
(contact, calendar, bookmars i know will be synced back through google but i'm more intressted in my save data, appz and settings).I read Titanum backup does this but not sure if you can transfer from one firmware to another?
sorry for many questions but Android is a new world for me.
Kies firmware does not wipe data etc .
Odin update does not wipe data but depends upon the update .

Hello All,
I do not post on XDA (Silent reader haha) This would be my first thread.
Anyways, I have a couple of questions that I could not seem to find solid answers to.
I'm on Stock Jellybean I9300XXDLIH. I plan on rooting using Chainfire's CF-Auto-Root (the one that keeps stock recovery)
Q1.) If I root using that, then later if I want to restore my phone to TOTAL stock to keep warranty, will I be safe by using TriangleAway and then flashing Stock firmware (Of the same region) using Odin? Are these 2 steps enough? Some people have got that tiny red exclamation mark, something about a new bootloader.. has that issue been resolved?
Q2.) I have heard that OTA updates are not a good idea after rooting. However I want to use Kies to update my firmware, after rooting and using TriangleAway. Is this a problem?
Q3.) I think we are getting a 4.1.2 update soon with premium suite .. around this month. Is it better to wait for that update before I root?
Q4.) If it is wise to root now, can somebody please link me to a guide that tells me what it is safe to remove from stock rom? I have downloaded a debloat tool from a guide, but I opened the .BAT file with a text editor, read the commands and saw that it removed too many things for my liking, some of them I would want to keep..
Q5.) Does the Stock Kernel support overclocking/Underclocking/Undervolting? (I am guessing not, being hopeful Interested in underclocking and undervolting.) Are there any drawbacks to using a Kernel like Siyah's in terms of battery life and stability? Does the Stock rom at least support underclocking by itself? On my Old galaxy mini it did..
Thank you, sorry for the long post or if the questions seem repeated (Spent loads of time searching!)
Anyone?

If you root then your phones binary counter will increase and phone will show in modified state. You will not be able to use ota upgrades. But I don't miss kies a bit because I got so much more with little secrifise. Also there are better options for backing up your phone then kies.

If that's what you want. But there are many custom roms already have 4.1.2 and they are much better then stock rom for battery, speed and smoothness. I could never convince myself go back to stock rom after trying some of custom rooms with lots of additional features.

I am not sure about this issue because I never faced this one. I purchased S3 last month and Isince then I have been flashing custom roms. I already tried 15-20 roms. Never had any issue.
All you had to do is completely follow instructions and make sure rom/mod/app is compatible with your phone model
Why do you want to update via Kies? I think Kies will only work if you keep your device pure. Also, you can update/flash official firmware with Odin/Mobile odin. That's what I do. Most of the people here do not use kies for upgrading firmware but they download stock samsung firmware from http://www.sammobile.com and flash it with Odin. It take 30 secs, as simple as that.
Thank you for your time.
I already know about Odin and Samfirmware, it's just that this is an expensive phone and don't want to use any unofficial software apart from Root.. for now.
There is no way to know unless you try it yourself. Nobody here can assure you that some process or rom or mod will definitely work on your phone.
This is kind of you-are-responsible-for-your-act forum.
Hi all,
I have a stock S2, detailed as below. I've been reading over these forums for a day or two, but tbh it's approaching information overload time. I'd like to root my S2, and load a lightweight rom to get some decent battery time by cleaning off all the unwanted apps that are preloaded.
Please advise what firmware / rom I should use?
Never rooted a phone b4, so any advice is welcome
Model: GT-I9100
Android version: 4.0.4
Baseband Version: I9100XXLQ6
Kernel Version: 3.0.15-I9100XWLPT-CL941023
Build number:: IMM76D.XWLPT
Hope all the above helps

Okay, in those 2 days you read this? You are...on 4.0.4
So now we gotta find the best way to get you rooted.
You wanna flash a kernel? root thru recovery with a zip? wanna try exynos abuse?
Take your pick.
What i'm trying to say is that you need a little bit more of the reading thing. Go on you tube, read some posts, you get the idea.
Now, on the ROM subject, you want either a custom rom or an unbranded stock rom.
Which one?
Well...that is up to you.
The one hes got is unbranded. He just needs root to remove all the crap.
or titanium buck up to freeze it all up.

When you know as much as you do now, it's most unwise to root your phone and touch anything of the software.
First read and learn a whole lot more about the whole rooting-and-stuff process, but please start with the forum rules. So, search before asking, and don't ask subjective questions.

hi there,
all of us have been newbies at this at a time.
My suggestion:
Get clear about what you want.
A different interface?
Longer Battery life?
Just removing crapware?
- If you want another interface, check out various launchers from the market first. No real need to flash at this point.
- Battery life is a problem on the SII, I've got a 3500 mAh one (from ebay), which will last a day of playing and surfing. The stock battery is only 2000 mAh.
- to remove bloatware, just root the phone, use titanium backup to freeze an application you don't want anymore. (Make sure to use the Preferences in TB to set a backup path on your external_sd. Using the internal SD isn't so useful. In 'Freezer settings' you may want to remove market entry, so IF you flash a new rom, at least the old bloatware will not be downloaded automatically).
Hope this helps.
Yes, that does. My main aim is to remove all ths bundled apps that come with the s2, hopefully improving battery by doing so.

A lot of custom roms eat up your battery more. You want to stop unnecessary stuff running as that adds to battery consumption.
Youd also be safer to flash LP7 stock rom(4.0.3) as that dont have the brickbug......either that or just flash a rooted kernel.
I run LP7 with dreamkernel and all the crap removed and its basically my display that runs away with the battery, other stuff dont use much.
So,there is loads of permutations you can try,any of the stock roms GB/ICS x 2/JB leak, and then theres custom roms.
For now,you should prob just flash a siyah rooted kernel(root + cwm),make a nand backup, also use hktool for efs backup. Then you can get TB and remove the unneccesary things that run and eat battery(theres a thread about whats safe to remove).
Thanks for all the info, I'll jump on later and have another read up

In that case flash Siyah kernel (this will root rom), Then reboot inro recovery and make a backup.
Once you have backed up rom, install something like SystemApp Remover. There is some info on what is safe to remove, use search.

Many thanks,
Managed to root with no problem, will look up what I can rip off and start swinging the axe
Hello,
I would like to Root my S II and I have some questions before I do it:
If I install a ROM, do I really have to factory reset before that? If yes, why? and Can I back up all application data easly?
Can I remove the TouchWiz home and get the google's stock one?
What can "brick" my phone?
How big danger risk does it have?
Is it worth it?
I hope I get answers to these questions.
1) Yes. Because previous rom installations can often leave behind stuff that won't play nice with your new rom. Always do a wipe when moving from a TW rom to an AOSP rom & vice versa, always do a wipe when going from one Android version to another. Always do a wipe if the flashing instructions for a particular rom say do a wipe.
Yes, backup your application data with Titanium Backup Pro (but not system apps/data). You can also use Ti to backup call logs & SMS's.
2) If you mean launchers, you can use whatever launchers are compatible with the rom you're wanting to use. This will vary; look/ask in the thread devoted to the rom.
3) Any flash (either Odin or CWM) has the potential to brick your phone. If you
ensure you know what you're doing before you do it, the risk for any individual flash is very very small. You cannot completely remove this risk.
4) I answered this in 3.
5) If you're asking 'is it worth it (rooting) ?, you should be first asking yourself the question 'Why do I want to root my phone ?' If you can't answer that question, the risks involved may not be worth it, because that shows you don't really know what you're doing at this point. Don't do anything to your phone until you do know exactly what you're doing. Ignoring this tends to lead to busted phones. And I've seen probably thousands on here over the past 2 & a bit yrs.
If you really can't answer the question or you find all the guides/tutorials on here too hard, I'd suggest you leave your phone stock. 'Because it's cool' isn't really much of an answer (there's nothing cool about it; technically speaking, it's rather boring).
Now then, if you're up for a lot of reading & learning, there are threads stickied near the top of Q&A & also an index of guides/tutorials stickied near the top of General you should be reading.

Just read the info in the Play Store. I'm not the developer
Thanks everyone for replying!
I would like to know what rooting guide worked for you. (best)
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1501719 I want to know for sure is that REALLY a good quide.
and was that ClockWorkMod to overclock, or what was it?
1) clockworkmod is not used to over clock your ROM.....that is controlled by a custom kernel.
2) the rooting method in your link is how I rooted my phone when I was on stock ICS......There *may* be a risk when using that method....basically you DON'T want to do any cwm wiping after using this method to root until you have flashed a custom kernel on top of it. Search for and read about "emmc brickbug" to find out why.
3) Titanium Backup is one of the most useful apps that anybody running a rooted phone can buy......TOTALLY worth the pocket change to get it......
once you're rooted and running your 1st cusROM, you'll get bitten by the modding bug very quickly and then TiBu will come into its own......
This might be my S2 or it might be my W, but it's definitely CM...

modding bug? And, I should root, install a custom rom, and then I can/need to wipe?
If you use your linked method to root, you'll have a 'temporary' CWM that some say it'd be best NOT to use for wiping......
You need to do things in this order.....
1) root your phone with the method in your link.
2) install a custom kernel zip using the temporary CWM installed at stage 1.
3) use the permanent CWM that will be installed at stage 2 to do the wipes.(VERY important when moving from stock to custom).
4) use CWM to flash your chosen ROM.
You can bypass steps 1 & 2 by simply using Odin to directly flash the custom kernel.......the choice is yours.....
The most popular custom kernels are siyah or dorimanx.....it shouldn't matter too much which one you choose as it'll be overwritten when you flash the ROM.....flashing the kernel is just a 'means to an end'......
This might be my S2 or it might be my W, but it's definitely CM...

Just to make sure I got it: I do that everything on the same time on recovery mode without booting my phone? (does it even matter)
I found this guide with odin: http://technoxone.com/mobile/android/how-to-root-samsung-galaxy-s2-i9100-easy-steps Is it safer?
Is a Custom "OS" a kernel? Witch of those did you take?
Again questions... I must ask questions in case I do something wrong...
Don't worry about asking questions........it's better to ask and get it right than to NOT ask and turn your phone into a paperweight. I don't mind answering questions if you're prepared to search, read and learn as well.
The kernel can be installed separately to the OS......while most custom ROMs include a kernel with the package, the kernel in itself is a separate part of the software.....in simple terms, the kernel is what allows the hardware to talk to the OS......it's what makes the phone/OS do what you want when you touch the screen.
With regards to the link in your last post, having read some of the comments, there seems to be some 'worry' about the compatibility of the kernel download that the author provides for use. Another point to think about.......
XDA is the primary source for information and tools in the Android community. Most other websites get their information here, and some don't display/use it correctly.....some time ago, I saw a number of threads where people said they'd followed the instructions on another website and ended up with bricked phones.......
There are guides 'stickeyed' at the top of the various S2 sections here on XDA that tell you EVERYTHING you need to know......take a look and find out the info you need.....right here.....

ok, so the chameleon OS that Donnie Sins told about has a custom kernel? Do you know better custom roms than chameleon?
I'm going to go read EVERYTHING I need to know...... right here.......
Yes.... Chameleon (the same as any other custom ROM has a custom kernel) it won't be as heavily customized as some are.....chameleon ROM is a 'hybrid' ROM..... that is to say it is a stock based ROM with custom tweaks and modifications included........
Some custom kernels will allow things like under volting and overclocking and a whole host of other 'non standard' functions.....
This might be my S2 or it might be my W, but it's definitely CM...
I want to post this in the development forum but I can't since this is a new account. So, I want to ask does this rooting method ( http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2065581 ) work for JB stock rom I9100GDXLS2 on my GT-19100G?

Well, I don't really know the flexibility of the other rooting method. But, this method, I've read some post that it does not work with some stock rom.
Hellooo...
Should I also install gapps?
What's the thing to overclock?
Can someone link a rooting method with odin if it's more stable?
And please answer the questions a bit on top
