Hi,
Personaly I'm verry happy with the Galaxy S II except for it's sound quality.
It's quite horrible if you ask me so I was wondering if there's something like the Voodoo Sound mod wich we had on our Galaxy S..
Due to the sgs2 using a Yamaha and not a Wolfson DAC.. Supercurio has pretty much stated he is not developing Voodoo sound for the SGS2... Shame...

Whats wrong with the sound, everything plays fine here it's currently the best mp3 sound I had, maybe change headsets? settings?
Edit: the headsets that were delivered with the phone are indeed horrible, try sennheiser or sony ears

You obviously haven't tried SG1 with Voodoo noooow that was the best mp3 sound I could get out of a phone
I have Sony's mw600. They sound quite good on my macbook for instance, but once plugged into my sammy it's horrible.
But now we know voodoo sound won't be developed, what are the alternatives?

CM7 normally improves the sound as well, let's hope they pay attention to this. I am using poweramp with some adjusted settings for now, and its not as bad as some people claim it to be. I am getting less noise readings than supercurio's test. But to be clear, its not at the same level as the sgs with voodoo sound for sure. Although I heavily doubt most people will be bothered by it. With the supplied earplugs you will have a ****ty quality anyway, and still people use them.
I used a wide range of headphones and earplugs and for now Im using my sony MDR-XB500 which don't really need an amp and supply some extra kick (something the sgs2 misses compared to the sgs)
If you are not an audiophile, just tweak the eq a bit and you will still enjoy your music.
And please stop claiming that the iphone 4 is so amazing in audio quality, its comparable with the sgs2 in noise levels. (did several readings myself, gf has an iphone 4)
I didn't, I said MacBook.. Anyway lets hope they pay attention to it indeed. Gonna try PowerAMP and DSP manager for now

Something doesn't add up here. The MW600 are bluetooth headphones, they receive digital bits and use their own DAC to turn it into analog audio. The SGS2 DAC play no role here.
Notice the word 'plugged', I use them without the bluetooth receiver with an extension cord.

This Voodoo sound lark sounds very intriguing... does anyone know if there is a kernel available that I can flash onto my Samsung S2 which will enable the nicer-sounding Voodoo?

Hey guys I've read some posts, reviews and watched some video samples of the Amaze and from what I can tell..it's true, the audio recording on this phone is horrible.
I wanted to ask if anyone from this forum could compare it to the MT4G?
That's the phone I am currently using now and want to know how does it measure up to the MT4G's audio recording when shooting video.
I ask because I record a lot of videos with my MT4G and it's important that the audio quality on the Amaze isn't less than my phone.
1080p would be awesome to have (mine has 720p) but I don't want to sacrifice audio quality.
So with that being said, could anyone tell me from personal experience whether it's worse or better when compared to MT4G?
Thanks a lot.
I would ask if you are so concerned for professional reasons and then I realized a pro would use a real camera...
Not trying to be a prick or anything. Just curious.
What is with the concern of how well the audio is recorded off your phones camera?

Because I don't own a point and shoot camera so I rely on my phone to do all the recording.
I have two kids, 5 and 4, and I record them all day, everyday.
So yeah I just don't want to sacrifice the audio quality for better video quality.
Cause if you have kids that young you should know the audio is the most important part!! They say some of the craziest things. Lol.
Anyway, thanks for asking though. I don't mind explaining. Do you have any thoughts here?

If you want good audio quality on a phone camcorder, you're not going to have any luck with HTC, put simply. The Amaze is a fantastic phone and video quality is among the best out there, but audio has never been HTCs strong point. If you're looking for great audio, I'd suggest looking into a Motorola device, though T-Mobile really doesnt support Moto anymore it seems. If you do go with Motorola, just know that video quality will not be the best on most, at least from what I've seen. The Razr looks solid on both fronts. Then there's the iPhone 4S, which undoubtedly has the best of both worlds. Either way, I'll stick with the Amaze. I love it in every way.

I mean my biggest thing was whether it'll be worse than my current phone.

The audio quality is very good. But not stellar. Much depends on the source. If you use badly compressed mp3 files and cheap earbuds don't expect much. The phone can play .flac files if you install a 3rd party player like PowerAMP. That combined with a good set of headphones (I'm using Klipsch, which are also very good but not stellar) then the audio quality is more than adequate.

As far as recording, the audio is just as good as my vibrant...take that as you may--I am not a huge video guy. Plus, once you record, you can edit the audio on your pc.
PowerAmp is the single, most important app for me...in the car, at work, everywhere, the output is amazing.

Beats Audio
Do you know if Beats Audio will be in the Amaze anytime soon or in the dev posts?
audio seem ok to me...I had the SGS2 which only provides MONO audio, and audio quality seemed good . This phone provides mono and Stereo so I played around with it and when I put it on mono audio the sound quality is much better, but then again you get mono....So It might have something to do with the extra microphones trying to pick up extra sound and cutting out the background noise....Personally I feel the sound on the Amaze is much more clear with high treble, than the SGS2, is the only phone I can compare it to. sound on SGS2 was muffled a little. also the speakerphone on the back and front of the HTC device sound much less muffled than My SGS2, I have no experience with motrola or any other brank of phone.

I installed a app from the marketplace called Volume+, it was less than 2 dollars. But you can go to the dev website and download it for free. It boost up the volume from the audio playing from the loudspeaker and headset. I don't know if it will boost the recorded incoming audio. To me I had the MT4G rooted with a sense 3.0 Rom and I already love this amaze. As long as your hand doesn't block the microphones on the phone it is fine. Plus for 15 dollars you can buy the adapter to hook up to your tv and watch the glorious 1080p via HDMI. Also my Amaze is all stock. Plus the reception and call quality is very good.

This may seem odd but I found that, to me at least, it sounds better with the "stereo recording" off. That's how my MT4G videos sound.
Anyway, volume is not the problem here. It's sound quality.
I get the best recording with an app called rec forge, mono, wav and 22khz sample rate. The stereo recording does not improve the fidelity of the sound. I have yet to try an external Mic.

Anyway to get something like this Beats control panel like on HP Beats laptops like mine here. Really Beats on my laptop sound way more amazing then Beats on our Rezound.
Agreed, that would be nice.
My Son's LT has that panel also.
Honestly, I can't stand to use the stock Music player due to being stuck with either the Beats or HTC "enhancement" both of which only ever sounds like a bit of reverb and bass boost added, by different degrees. On decent high-end 'phones it just sounds like garbage. I'd feel suckered by the hype if I didn't already expect it to be empty hype.
The Rezound, on the other hand, is awesome.
I couldn't actually care less about beats, I bought the phone because I liked it. I have never really used the integrated beats software, I always use PowerAmp which is so much more advanced than most other music players.

I agree, I didn't buy this phone at first because of the Beats gimmicks but once I saw the specs and the news of ics coming to it plus BJ's Wholesale had them on sale for $99, I had to get two.
I used the iBeats earphones once and they absolutely sucked ass compared to my SkullCandy 50/50. Only thing is my 50/50's aren't Android compatible so out of its three headset buttons, only the middle play/pause works.

If you install the app "headset button controller" you can regain all the functions of the 3 buttons.
The app works perfectly, I have about 30 different sets of earbuds/headphones & 99% of them are only "iphone compatible" so I use this app every single day.
I originally installed it to use with my Beats Studios & my Bose QC15's but I quickly realized it works with ANY headphone set.

This is definitely a matter of preference but I tried both Player Pro and Poweramp and I have found the sound is EXACTLY the same on both players. They both utilize the same 10 band EQ. Poweramp even gives you the option to turn on Beats, which I find to be unnecessary. In the end, the only difference is the UI - I had already purchased Poweramp so there was no need for Player Pro, but the sound, I found, was exactly the same after tweaking. I'm sticking with Poweramp

This may be a thread that makes more sense in headfi.org but since it's related to the SGSNote, might as well tell you guys know.
Reference thread (one of many): http://www.head-fi.org/t/555006/samsung-galaxy-s2-vs-iphone-4
The Samsung Galaxy S had an exceptional Digital to Audio Converter or DAC that was a pleasure for Audiophiles to use.
The iPhone family due to its ultra popularity has multiple external DACs that are audiophile quality and bypass the POS Apple gifted on the iPhone.
But the SGS2, Skyrocket, Note and variants of the SGS2 (family) have been bestowed with a sub par quality Yamaha DAC. Now, if you read the thread, you will see that through PowerAMP and other means, such a bypass through the usb to use with an AMP, it fixes the atrocious headphone socket, but source quality is still poor. No one has as of yet created and most likely will not create a product that is compatible with the SGS2 family to bypass the awful Yamaha's.
So, we're stuck with sub par quality audio... Great. This is the only aspect I regret of selling my iphone 4. I was buying the HRT Streamer II meant for the iPhone, an exceptionally priced dac that bypasses the iphones source component.
My all FLAC/ALAC library and Beyerdynamic DT990's are very angry. There goes my music listening on the go.

I notice the difference on my External Dac , and I have a crappy Fiio E9. All my mixtapes are 320k mp3s.
I can't wait for Voodoo, it helped get through Samsung's awful deving around the dac, but the yahama it self is still awful.
Voodoo Sound isn't coming, the stuffs it does do not apply in our situation.
We might however be able to pull some better quality out of the YDA165, I did some research on that with the SR, but didn't take it anywhere.

I wonder if I could remove the surface mounted (I'm guessing) chip from the mobo and install something nice, like a burrbrown. too bad I don't know anything about software to set it up, or if it is even possible to pull this off.
Here's hoping someone tries though.
We probably won't even get Voodoo LOUDER since supercurio doesn't support Skyrocket and other Qualcomm flavors of the GS2.
I'm not an audiophile, but I still find the sound quality disappointing. I guess most people don't realize or pay enough attention to sound reproduction to make Samsung put a better DAC in their recent phones. I'm sure they save money using the Yamaha, but I'd definitely be willing to pay a little bit more for the Wolfson they had in their last generation of phones.

And I thought I expected a lot from a phone...
I do not know if any of you know how good the Zune HD's sound quality is, but I was wondering if it is possible to get the same kind of quality on our 3D. I know the quality depends on the DAC and circuity from what Ive read, but our phone's hardware is more recent and therefore I assume it has to have better parts than the Zune's. Would it be possible to create an app or a background service that can give the same quality?
Unfortunately htc probably didn't spend the money on the audio hardware. Poweramp, volune+, dsp manager, and beats mods improve sound (depending who you ask). There are other apps but nothing that revolutionary.

You have two choices to get the best sound possible on your 3D:
1. Buy Poweramp
2. Install "Android Revolution HD" ROM and flash Beats on it.
As someone who owns a Zune HD, I understand exactly what you are talking about. It's audio quality is simply unmatched. I still carry mine around, it's small enough that it fits in that little "sub-pocket" that most jeans tend to have on the right pocket.

Couldn't we create something to imitate the same sound as that of the Zune, if Volume + can emulate Beats audio why couldn't we create something similar. Plus I think if can get Chad's kernel with the improved sound drivers I am sure it can surpass that quality and make it audiophile acceptable.

I think Ive done that in the past, I had Poweramp with beats enabled and Chad's kernel on top of that with the better drivers. It sounded great, even the htc's music app sounded better than with just stock Beats. However, Im still fiending for that Zune quality! When I had my Zune HD music was great and I could listen to it all day without any discomfort, even in loud places with cheap headphones. With Beats its cool too, but sometimes its better when you are in a quiet place.

As someone who owns a Zune HD, I understand exactly what you are talking about. It's audio quality is simply unmatched. I still carry mine around, it's small enough that it fits in that little "sub-pocket" that most jeans tend to have on the right pocket.

Yeah, I feel you. I have the Ubermusic app and it sounds somewhat better than any other music app but I cant remember if its quality is the same as a real zune hd.
This is one reason why I can't use this as my main phone. And HTC isn't the only manufacturer whose sound quality is like this. I really hope this changes
I think Bose should make HTC speakers and drivers

So we could have an over-priced phone?
Let JBL or Shure handle it.

I'm kind of an idiot when it comes to sound quality, so just using a decent pair of earphones\earbuds doesn't give an htc phone good quality?
ZPlayer
I have never tried a zune, but I know that the App ZPLAYER looks exactly like zunes' UI and has a pretty good equalizer. I actually use this player more than any other, even though I got beats installed.
It's not free, but you shall try it. I can send the API or you'd know how to get it

It's not about the look of the app. It's the sound quality. The hardware inside the Zune HD gave it a truly wonderful sound (way better than all the iPods and the other MP3 players of the time) and the OP is looking for a way to fix that.
I still think we can fix this some way or another. I am not a developer but I am willing to learn to develop a service or app or maybe even just port the way the zune hd handles audio. Or someone else can do it who has the experience. I am thinking we could probably hack and tweak our audio chips just like we can overclock our cpus, couldn't we overclock it the same way? Moreover, I found out that the 2009 Ipod touch used a similar chip as the zune hd's. Yet, audio sounded different because maybe there is a software aspect that helps also. Also, the zune had a tegra processor plus a dedicated audio core, although I do not know if this is the same as Wolfson's.
Wikipedia has some specs if this can help:
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Zunehd
Here is the audio chip the zune used according to Engadget:
http://www.engadget.com/2009/09/15/microsofts-zune-hd-already-cracked-open-and-photographed/2
http://www.wolfsonmicro.com/products/power_management/WM8352/
and this website has more information if anybody is interested:
http://channel9.msdn.com/Forums/Coffeehouse/Audio-DAC-chips-does-anyone-care-anymore
Couldn't we also replace our audio chips with this one:
http://www.cirrus.com/en/products/cs4970xx_family.html
Does anybody know if the decoder, or whatever makes music sound good on the Zune HD, can be ported to our phones? Or be used to create a service like Beats or dsp manager to run in the background?

Yes and no. From what I understand, the quality starts at the sound file. If the sound or song is bad it will sound bad on cheap headphones and maybe even in expensive headphones, too. The next step would be probably the chosen media player, which will send the audio signals it gets from reading the sound file to the Digital to Analog Converter (DAC) to be "decoded" and played out through the jack by the headphones.
I do not know if this is 100 percent correct, but this is the way it seems. Correct me if I am wrong.

I have posted the same thread to seek a way to enhance the audio quality. Some guys gave me some advice that flash the chad`s kernel. Yes, the man who has been banned from XDA. I dont know the exactly the reason why his kernel will improve the audio quality but some guys who flashed his kernel did approved it worked. I still not tried it because I dont know the way to root & s-off my EVO 3D. You can find his kernel through infected rom .com(please google) If you try it, please post your experience. Thanks

My bad. I must had forgotten to reply back. The sound quality was good on his kernel, but it is still not like the Zune HD's.
have you tried v4a? ---> http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2191223
Read all the top 5-6 posts from the OP for instructions and understand them carefully before installing.
There are many services and equalizers that offer very different audio qualities....Never listened to a zune but there are many settings and presets that might help.
Here is list of some of the IR samples that can be used with V4A ---> http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2216193

Use PowerAmp. You can increase the decibels and remove the volume limitation.
Yeah PowerAmp hands down is the best media player on the market for android has been since it's release.
It's well worth the $5 or what ever they are charging for it today. It sounds amazing, the UI flows well and hands down has the best
library structure out there.
PowerAmp however will not help you with Pandora or any other internet radio app. It's EQ only works for the music playing through the PowerAmp player. There are tons of equalizer apps on the market most are free and work fine, some require root but not all of them. Those that do require root tend to work a little better in my past experience and if your phone is rooted install the beats audio drivers <-- in the market place it's free. That will make a big difference.

I wouldn't install beats audio unless you make a nandroid backup. People have had tons of issues with these drivers for minimal audio quality increase.
If your rooted, STweaks from play store. Great app.

I agree, beats audio sucks.
I tried it out of curiousity more than anything (knowing up front that it is nothing but an overhyped EQ setting)
In my system, it seemed to install just fine and appears to be working etc but makes no difference at all in the sound quality or volume.
Volume + works in some apps but not in others.
I'm an audiophile I own and use several different high end headsets with my phone. Also use it in the car... it's all personal preference people rant and rave about some of the equalizer apps out there I think some of those sound horrible. Between personal preference and the wide verity of different headsets/speakers out there it's next to impossible to say xx app is the "best" audio quality tweak / booster ect. you have to try them and see which you like.
for the features and an amazing equalizer PowerAmp but it like I said, it won't work with pandora / slacker radio apps so your stuck with the market place EQ aps for that.
I personally think the beats drivers sound great, works well on my phone with my settings and my beats headphones, with 1 of my Bose headsets the bass is a little too heavy and low notes get a bit hollow so I disable it when using those. Sounds fine on the other set.
My thoughts on it.
use perseus kernel with stweaks ....

This post is amusing to me in a couple ways. I owned a very high end stereo shop for over 10 years.
We sold a lot of "True audiophile" equipment. One thing a true audiophile would never do in a million years is use anything with the beats name on it. Any true audiophile would be embarresed to admit they even own a set of beats headphones.
Now don't get me wrong, I own both a set of Bose QC15 (they work super for noise blocking on airplanes) and a set of Beats Studio's (I never would have bought them as they are WAY overpriced but I got them as a present) and I like them but I take a TON of abuse from guys who really are audiophiles for owning them.
Another thing audiophiles make a point of is not using any kind of phony IQ settings like the gimmicky beats stuff.

Lol, it's just kind of a snobbery type thing.
True audiophiles wouldn't be caught dead with a pair of beats headphones.
If you go to the sites like headphone.org, they riidicule the beats stuff as overpriced just constantly.
