This is an excerpt from an email conversation with HTC:
"I thank you for sending an email about unlocking the boot loader mode on the new HTC EVO 3D. I understand you would like to unlock the boot loader mode on your Android device but there has been no decision about which devices will be unlocked. I would suggest that you keep an eye on the HTC regional website at www.htc.com/US under the Home tab."

Figures. I emailed them as well, no response back yet. When I do hear from them it will probably be a generic response like the one you received.

Yes and i think it was posted on the HTC facebook page.
Just figured I would post to help make more noise about it. Noise seems to help make things happen sometimes. Other times it is just noise though.....
I had actually emailed asking for the SMART_IO.CRD file to help with some development work I didn't mention boot loaders or unlocking or rooting. Somewhat surprised at the response for their general support desk. lol

Yep.
They have about 28 days to figure it out for me. Keep lighting up their Facebook. E-mail is good, but public exposure on places like Facebook and Twitter is the best.

Ditto.
And in reality, I'm leaning heavily towards the Photon or SGS2 now. The SGS2 is already unlocked, and with today's news that the Atrix was unlocked via a leaked 2.3.3 upgrade and that the official 2.3.3 upgrade will be unlocked, it sounds like the Photon will probably ship unlocked as well.
I've loved HTC, but I'm not interested in dealing with a company that's openly deceptive.

When? Moto said a while back that they were going to stop locking all future phones to my knowledge.
Edit: NM, just found it. However, that just says it won't ship unlocked, and it's a month old. If the Atrix will be unlocked with their GB update, I would be surprised if the Photon doesn't follow suit very quickly... unless it's sprint who's actually pulling the strings here.
Is it a carrier branded device. ? It'll be locked.

all they stated was that it wasnt unlockable/relockable, could have a xoom style bootloader for all we know.
what moto said is that they will release software that will unlock devices later in the year. As to which specific devices will get the unlock functionality, that will be the decision of the carriers.
This was one of the major reasons I said I wasn't picking up this phone on launch day. There is no guarantee this thing will ever be unlocked, regardless of what HTC said a few weeks ago. From what I gather, they never specifically stated the Evo 3D would be unlocked, just future phones. Considering the phone was already in production when they made that statement, they might not think it's worth putting the effort to unlock it at this point.
Also, I checked out the phone at my local Sprint store and wasn't impressed at all. I'll see what the SGSII or the Photon has to offer when those are released.
Keep on the assault on facebook! The second we slow down is when they decide that eventually we will forget about it and not do anything about it.

i totally agree with this..
and also i agree everyone needs to keep the Assault on the facebook page.. maybe if enough ppl sit there and ***** they will do something about it.. cause this is some serious bull****.. the CEO wasnt the only one who said something about the unlocking of the bootloaders.. but there was a post from a HTC DEV that the EVO 3D would SHIP UNLOCKED!! so this bull**** with them saying "FUTURE DEVICES" is exactly that BULL****...
I WILL BE DOING A COUNTDOWN ON THEIR FACEBOOK PAGE.. SEEMS LIKE A GOOD WAY TO DO IT.. EVERYONE GETS ON FB ATLEAST ONCE A DAY SO THAT WOULD BE A GOOD WAY OF DOING IT..
hit their twitter page also.. @HTC.. i am.. looks like they more actively watch their twitter page.. been following them for days now and who ever is watching it replys to almost everyone!!. just a thought..

As much as I want to believe that HTC is going to come though, I am cautious through past experience. Companies move SLOW. Right hands don't talk to the Left Hands, and before you know it, we're in the same club as some of the Motto people. I don't want to be in that club!
I want a device where I am FREE to choose what I may do with it, warranty or not. Free to utilize the device to its FULL capability and NOT be bogged down by bulky code or bloatware.
For the clock, I've set some parameters.
Date: Set for the earliest of the 30 Day period starting June 21st, the day users were able to start ordering the phone. You may argue that it shouldn't start till the 22nd, but I've worked retail, I've seen some of the BS Reps try to pull with 30 day technicalities. The clock goes till 9pm, the bleeding edge of the return policy for brick and mortar stores.
Time Zone: Set for Eastern as this would be the time zone in the United States to be affected first.

hmm, well its a lot of phones... its not like its just a 5,000 phones (which is a lot all in itself)
and as far as dates go, that **** can get silly, the galaxy s vibrant was a bit screwed up for some people, volume rocker wasn't helping us get to recovery like it was supposed too.. and there was a whole big date time of frame where people thought it was the issue, and the dates were really odd.. def more than a week or two old before they were received.
Yeah I'm not saying the manufactured dates are all correct I also remember the vibrant button recovery problem
But if it was suppose to launch the 4th of June and now the 24th its not that unreasonably for them to do it...
When I worked at a plastic factory and a company sent back " bad or faulty" parts we would rework them in days where talking millions of parts...
They have the unlock codes and thousands of employees to do it... honestly in a 12 hour shift a single person could do a few thousand phones alone. Now times that by a thousand employees and a few weeks its done in no time

I would highly doubt that is the reason for the delay and to be honest, no one said the EVO 3d was delayed except for people posting bogus dates on this site.
It is not like Sprint said the EVO 3d is getting released on June 4th. It was all speculation that it was being released the same day as the original EVO and I have yet to see anything from Sprint that says otherwise.

The word "backtracked" meant they back tracked on policy. Before open bootloaders, then locked bootloaders, backtracked to open It will be locked when released, a OTA will fix it OR a "leak". Perhaps it may be unlocked when released, due to the real release date, when ever that is. It was never coming on June 4th like everyone hoped/dreamed. I mean it is just now getting sent to the FCC, you think they delayed sending off to the FCC for a bootloader? lol
Reality Sucks!
Just because they "back tracked" on the e3d DOESN'T MEAN THEY ARE UNBOXING ALL THOSE PHONES. It very well could mean they backtracked their thought process and it'll still be OTA. because it also states the "back tracking effect future phones. So I doubt for fun they are going to lock those bootloaders, package them and then un box them. just to unlock the boot loader. It didn't say that was the cause of the phone not being out or even a delay.
Folks this phone is coming when it's coming. I doubt there has even been so much as a delay. people really need to settle down. Its coming. HTC said so Sprint said so, and the FCC has paper work.

I know this is the EVO 3D forum so opinions will lean that way but I'm going back to Sprint from T-Mobile. Should I get the 3D or wait a month and get the Motorola Photon? Which will be the better phone?
Depends on what you are looking for. If 3 matters obviously the 3d. If you are a sense fan then the 3d as well. However I kind of like that the photon has some of the things the 3vo is missing. For one the kickstand not deal breaker but it comes in handy and an 8Mp camera with 1080p video as opposed to 5mp with 720p. Now the big draw back. The motorolla is supposed to ship with a locked bootloader. So if you like to run roms you are rolling the dice. It may or may not be unlocked at a future date. Personally I trust the 3vo to be rooted much sooner than the photon. All that said check out the Samsung Nexus II as well. Looks to be a contender.
Can anyone dispute the claim made in this article about Motorola?

I'm just saying thats on the word of a dude on twitter and then it says at the end of the year and at the discrection of the carrier. Either way it is supposed to ship with a locked bootloader and you will likely be waiting a while. IMHO thats a crap shoot you may or may not get an unlocked bootloader. I wish it wasn't so I really like this phone better than the 3vo for my personal needs but what to do.
Isn't the 3vo going to be locked as well to start? I know HTC came out and said they will no longer lock bootloaders, but there seems to be no confirmation on 1.) If they will even allow the 3vo to be unlocked, and 2.) If so, when that will happen. It's all a crapshoot I guess.

Good point maximus I'm just going off past performance and HTC's official stance to disable the bootloaders. I trust them more to follow through than Motorola but alas this is all just my opinion.
It all depends on HTC I guess. There are going to be a lot of disappointed 3vo owners if they finally realize after a few weeks that the devs can't work miracles and unlock encrypted bootloaders. No custom ROMs or modifications unless HTC comes through.

There's going to be a massive flood of these things on eBay in about 4-6 months if they don't unencrypt it, and the "next" best thing comes along. I think part of the success of the evo4g was the development aspect of it. I just hope HTC realizes that. Could have great potential if they push an update out fairly quickly so there is an easy method to root.

As far as the Photon being locked it will be. Now As far as that memo, There are bits and pieces missing. However it's not the 1st Motorola has said it will no longer lock the phones down. in fact every time I have seen this pop up it's been almost the exact same thing, even the "by the end of the year." But I have also read multiple times that that statements means phones coming out at the end of the year the Photon is not included in that group. I believe if you look on XDA as well as the internet you can find that to be true.
I just want to make sure I get the best phone out there and don't miss out. I sign up with Sprint on the 23rd to take advantage of the switch over deal and will get the EVO 4g . The 3D comes out the next day and I read somewhere the Photon comes out in July possibly the 21st. I don't want to use a free exchange in the 1 month time period only to be disappointed I didn't wait for the other phone

The cool thing about the Photon is it has HDMI out AND Micro USB port (so it can charge while playing movies (using the two cables at once). As for the EVO 3D, it has a new technology that lets HDMI charge the phone while it's plugged into the TV for HDMI out, however NO tvs out currently support this feature, so you will have to buy an adapter.
Tegra 2 CPU (Photon) is weaker than Snapdragon (EVO 3D). They're both dual core and really fast, but EVO should be superior in most situations. Motorola has stated that the bootloader is unlocked, but some rumors have it that it's still locked down tight and uncrackable (see Droid 2). This definitely makes me lean towards HTC. One more thing, HTC seems to have alot more development behind it (far more than any other manufacturer (Samsung's catching up!). To be honest, your choices should be between the GSII (Samsung within for Sprint) or the EVO 3D.

That will not have any short term impact on HTC. The amount of us that would sell would have no effect on them.
However, it's people like us that most others go to for phone advice. Once as a company loses our trust and favor the fallout regarding future phones will be exponential.
The important thing is that it will hopefully not be encrypted.

btw this was noted in the xHausx thread by me when I asked them why they didn't just toss it up on their site like xhausx suggested.
Their response(2days ago) was thats not how they want to do it and they are currently still developing the software to do such in a software update.
btw nice work, at least attempt at making a big stride in your thread in the Dev section. Nice to see people trying stuff!

Oh i agree. keep it going till its officially done and out for everyone.
If you accept an OTA to unlock the 3VO's bootloader, is it possible that Sprint can somehow disable wireless tethering even on a rooted device? I would think that they know what's up; everyone with a rooted device doesn't have to pay $30 for hotspot.

Thanks man. I really throught I had something going because build properties is a digital identity for adb that distinguishes production models from developmental ones.
Sent from a dual core beast 3VO. Do this on your iFail 4

NS4G doesn't have to pay $30 for hotspot...AND the phone comes unlockable out of the box.
I doubt Sprint cares that much....we are a relatively small minority of their total accounts and we are going to find a way to tether for free regardless of if we get unlocked or not.
Also isn't Sprint the only company that doesn't censor tether apps from the market? I'm pretty sure they also have an official 'non-anti-tether' stance.
...and that's to say nothing of the fact that we pay for our data service and who cares where our bits come from and go to? We pay for the transport of said bits...the contents, origination and destination should really be irrelevant.
Besides, I can saturate my wireless connection with pandora or a couple of downloads on my phone just as easily as I could by hooking it up to a computer.
EDIT: Either way, I don't think they could possibly prevent tethering without throwing multiple monkey wrenches into the works.
When i went to look at the phone the otherday on the 24th my sprint guy that i always deal with said u know they r unlocking the bootloader in 60 days right? An i was like no i thought it would already be unlocked he said he read somewhere 60 days to try an get ppl to stay with it
Now idk if this is true or not by the way this guy didnt know a thing on how to root untill i showed him now he flashes roms like crazy lol
Since HTC had previously announced that they would be unlocking things with their unlock tool, we should try to hold them to their word. I know that they are just listening to Verizon on this phone, but I don't care; They lied and they should get an earful.
Go here, http://htcdev.com/contact and yell at them!
Go to their Facebook http://www.facebook.com/HTC?sk=wall and yell at them!
Who knows, maybe someone from HTC will covertly do some damage control? There must be some HTC employees out there that want unlocked phones too.
we tried doing the same thing with the Thunderbolt(even filing complaints with the FCC). it didn't do anything.

I'm sure we won't get a response, but over time, with enough phones and enough complaints, things might change. Even Motorola has publicly stated that they would re-examine their policies on locking bootloaders and I know their Facebook pages were spammed endlessly over locked bootloaders.
Also, it beats sitting around wanking about what will we will do when we finally get S-OFF.
Speaking of the FCC, we should hit them up again too.
I actually filed a complaint to the FCC and got an executive response from Verizon. Got a call from them too to "address" my concerns. Not sure if they do this with everyone (I'm pretty sure they do) but they said they were going to submit their response to the FCC. The gentleman stated that I will also be getting their response to the FCC regarding the locked bootloader. I am still awaiting to see their response.
So if a few hundred people do this, it should ruin at least one person's day.

HTC employees probably don't have locked bootloaders.

I already sent my complaint to the FCC last month. I didn't even get a reply from them, let alone Verizon. I don't mind spamming them!

Thanks VZ!
Grow a pair HTC..
*edit*
Meaning, the 'all other devices' no longer works, since as was pointed out, it was never technically on the official list to begin with.
no fkidding?
need to verify before I cancel my pending pre-order.
I don't think it was ever on the list. The accounts I've read are of people selecting the "other supported devices" option.
I'll likely cancel my pre-order too. This makes me sad, I was so exited about this device.

That method no longer works.
Should have been more clear.
We're already working on something.
Pleas don't get your undies in a bunch just yet.

I can live with stock for a while... Just got mine today... a day early... But I can't play with it until I'm done work... If unrEVOked is working on it I have faith...

This dont scarw me. I'm getting one. You got some of the best devs working on this.
As stated above, I am also totally willing to live with stock for a while. The great devs around here haven't let us down yet and I doubt they will now.:good:
God I hope so, I'm just picturing another OneX situation..
I figured this would happen sooner than later which is why I was going to pick one up tomorrow morning, but the night before is BS.
This is like the Rezound all over again. By the time S-Off was possible, I had lost interest and never bought one. I guess I'll keep my GNex a while longer. As much as I want this phone tomorrow, I'll likely never buy it or any other HTC phone.......unless the dev's pop out in the next week or two with an unlock for the bootloader and S-Off, then I'll reconsider. I just wonder if VZW or HTC have a way of quantifying lost revenues due to locking the phones down.

Less than .001%, don't over think it. Phone hacking is a tiny community against the rest of of the world.

and yet, VZ still wants us to bend over.
That's why I don't say any thing about HTCDev website. Once Verizon hears a device can be unlocked, its game over.
Pardon my complete ignorance. I've only had one HTC device before (Spouses TBolt), but I rooted it when I first got it and rooting instructions went live on XDA. What's the likelihood of rooting the DNA without having the HTCDev site unlocking it. Again, sorry if this is an elementary question.....
I am getting this phone tomorrow and give my S3 to the spouse, but I remember the wait before that phone was rooted, and it was agonizing. A Perm Root method came out literally on the 14th day, my last day to return it, so I got lucky. Do you think this will stunt development for this phone? I love using different, power-sipping kernels on to my devices.....

You do realize that a quality ROM will probably not be out for weeks. Not quite sure what you are looking to do the very first day with your bootloader / root. I am willing to wait a couple of weeks as I am sure the devs will figure it out.
I'm am so pissed, but this kind of thing happens every year when I upgrade. I'm still getting mine tomorrow, and just praying S-Off won't take as long to achieve like it did for the Rezound. Fingers Crossed

Is anyone actually surprised by this? By most accounts, this was entirely expected given what has happened with some previous Verizon HTC devices. Like the Incredible 4G, which could be unlocked via the site before it was officially released, but once the release date actually rolled around, it no longer worked.
I prefer to have root just for wifi tether and titanium backup. Just so much easier to restore apps with it then to try and use each app's backup/restore process.
I'm not looking until Feb anyways, but definitely disappointing.
This seems like a deal breaker to me. I was all hyped up about this but not so much anymore.
