Evo3D Vs Evo4G: Screen Colors? - HTC EVO 3D

Hello fellow XDA users...I just wanted to spark up a good debate about screen colors between the two...I love the 3D, but on a full brightness side by side comparison, the 4G seems to have richer colors, especially reds and yellows. The 3D seems to wash and dull colors out. Either way, the phone is probably my favorite Android to date, just wanted to get some other opinions?
Sent.

When I compare side to side the 3D has the rich colors. My EVO 4G has vibrant colors, but they just don't match. I have the novatec screen on my EVO 4G also.
I notice my EVO 4G has a cool feeling to it whereas my 3D has a warmer tone.

I saw the same thing when I compared my eve 4g and 3d

When I compared my 4g to my 3D it seems to me that the 4g screen is wider. I know it stats that they both have the 4.3" screens but the 4g font and screen looks brighter, crisper and wider than my 3D. Swypes even bigger on 4g. O Well!! I love my new 3D anyways.

the 3d actually has a taller screen. it's still 4.3 inches diagonally. its just taller, also meaning it's more narrow than og evo..

EVO 3D Similarities to Nintendo 3DS?

Does anyone know how the 3D effect on the Evo will compare to the 3DS?
I was playing around with the 3DS yesterday was very impressed with some of the effects. Particularly the augmented reality cards. It really makes you realize the potential 3D effects and a camera possess.... it's practically a hologram.
Yeah, the ol' lady is pretty "excited" about the potential behind the 3D camera.
What I am concerned about is the 3D quality. From the previews I saw everyone said it was spot on. However, I've heard mixed reviews in regards to the 3DS screen having a limited 'sweet spot' of view. I have not seen a 3DS yet.
Also, I am pretty sure that the 3D aspect, on the Evo, can only be viewed in landscape, and only to the left landscape at that. Dunno if that is controlled on the software end or if that is a limitation due to the screen technology. Either way, I hope it is closer to viewing a glasses-less 3D TV because those are legit.

I went into gamestop today and messed with the 3ds a little bit.. It was actually really good. Yes there is sweet spot's notice how it's plural.. Basically right in front of it or looking from the sides.. But it's hardly noticeable for a bad spot.. I found that overall it's really good and if the EVO 3d is that way, were on a great direction!
i think the quality is much better because the resolution is qhd and the screen self is bigger than the nintendo 3ds screen and the price of the phone is higher so i aspect the overall quality is very good.

Well price and quality aren't necessarily the same thing.
I'm not a big fan of the 3D thing. I tired 3DS in bestbuy. After 5 mins playing, I got dizzy.
Tried out the 3DS for the first time today. Almost unusable and the screen quality was similar to 3D magazine covers I saw 20 years ago - in other words, pathetically bad.
Maybe it was just my eyes, but no matter the angle I held the 3DS at, I couldn't get the 3D effect to remain constant.
I hope that the EVO 3D is FAR FAR FAR FAR more refined than this POS. I would assume so since it is a much better screen, but we'll see. The 3DS was starting to already give me a headache after about 20 seconds.
P.S., Nintendo, what the heck is with the build quality of this device? It looks like someone put it together from used parts circa 1970 in their garage. Utter fail IMHO.

Agreed. Looks horrible.. Did you notice how long it took to up the res on the screens? And its still horrible... I just saw a game on a dsi.. and the graphics were so pix lated it was ridiculous.
I hope they change the evo3d to a slider like the 3ds, that helps with the headaches ppl get change the depth a little and its easier to focus, from what I've seen the evos just gonna be a switch, a slider would be much better

From what i understand the switch on the side of the evo 3d will be for switching the camera from 2d to 3d only, and didn't have anything to do with the screen.(if some where else say other wise please post link, would love to see that)
I hope they have some sort slider (maybe in the setting some where) that does work like the slider on 3ds. I saw the 3ds at best buy and i was impressed, but different strokes for different folks.

[REQ] Opinions from Former Epic4G owners.

I am looking for opinions from former Epic4G owners on the differences in the screen quality between these two phones.
Pro's/Con's, quality, hue, color temperature, contrast, visibility in bright sunlight, etc. Your opinions and input would be greatly appreciated.
TIA
Mike
This screen actually looks better in my opinion... also when in direct sunlight.. wow you still see it better than ever.

I prefer the Epic screen and camera quality over this Photon but the speed, gps and battery life made it a worthy upgrade for me.
Sent from my MB855 using XDA App
Im about to replace my epic with a photon. Do you all see an improvement in 3G speeds? My 3G speeds on this epic are AWFUL.
Sent from my SPH-D700 using XDA Premium App
The epic had a great screen but so many things just didn't work well. My gps was useless and bluetooth and wifi were flaky.
On the photon everything works. It is fast as hell too. The screen, while not as good as the epic, is better than the evo 4g.
the SAMOLOED is very impressive when it comes to depth, contrast, detail, etc..
I really miss looking at the screen on my Epic.. however, (if you're only comparing screens).. the Photon screen is pretty damn good.. I can see it in bright sunlight w/ sunglasses on. it doesn't look grainy, i notice that while scrolling, it seems to 'dim' a little bit but this might be a characteristic of the pentile display.. colors look just fine (although, to be fair, I'm color blind ).. If you're looking for a Hi-Def TV... go get one. this is a damn phone LMFAO.
The screen is better than the Evo 3D FWIW...
now, to be fair, you should also compare the other aspects of the devices to make an informed decision.. the GPS works on photon/flaky on Epic.. same for bluetooth. the 3G radio on Photon works really well and is fairly quick (compared to the Epic).. bluetooth just works on photon/flaky on epic. battery life on photon is disgustingly good (is that a word ?? LOL).. Epic = mediocre..
to be fair, I have SRF 1.2 on my Epic and I love that device.. I just don't have any complaints (yet) w/ the photon and I've had it a week
I hope this helps
Was running SFR 1.2 and now running modified EG22 on my Epic4G. I am one of the lucky ones that has a fully functioning GPS since the Froyo update and haven't have any other major issues.
I am legally blind/low vision impaired so my major concerns are about screen visibility at night and bright sunlight as well as color temperature, hue and contrast as these are very important to me for the ability to view images without losing detail. The Epic4G is definitely adequate and I do love a hardware keyboard but I am drawn to the slightly larger screen size and higher processing capabilities.
The epic had a better screen and camera, but the screen on the Photon is nice. Like others have said, works in direct sunlight even with sunglasses on.
One issue I have is that watching HD mp4s worked on the epic, but not on the Photon.
Otherwise, the photon is a better phone. I had issues with wifi and gps on the epic but no problems on the photon. Everything else is improved, but i don't find the improvements all that drastic. Web browsing is faster, but not exceptionally faster.
I think the scrern has a bit of a blueish tint to it. Its very bright very easy to see. I haven't noticed really anything wrong with the screen. because its 540 x 960. Some print may be smaller then they where on the epic.

EVO 3D vs RAZR Maxx

Sprint HTC EVO 3D vs Verizon Motorola Droid RAZR Maxx
My Opinion
After 8 months with my EVO 3D I have decided to switch to a different network. Verizon, despite the bump in cost was the one I chose because they do have one of the best networks (at least in my area) and Sprint has the worst network (at least for me). So, before turning in my Sprint account I stopped by a Verizon store and picked up the RAZR Maxx, based mostly on the battery life and praise from a friend who owns a Droid RAZR. So I have both phones. Lets do a side by side! If I can get a third device of some kinds for pictures I will add them as well. Pardon my clumsiness if this thread is horribly written, I am a coder not a documentarian.
Now don’t get me wrong, I love my EVO 3D and if I could take it with me I would. Sadly I can’t so I figure I have both phones in front of me let’s do a comparison review. This review will not include data transfer rates as Sprint only has 3G in my area and Verizon’s 4G LTE network blankets the area. I also will try to not use many specific specs for the comparison as anyone can go look up the size of the RAZR and the size of the 3D, I will focus more on the feel.
Size and Screen
EVO 3D
The general shape and size of the EVO 3D is awesome. It fits well in the palm of the hand and has a decent weight. The screen is a 4.3” qHD and looks gorgeous to me. It is bright and the colors pop but when you put it next to the Maxx they don’t pop as much and are a bit faded. The 3D feature is a neat novelty. I enjoy watching 3D movies on the phone and playing the 3D games is interesting, but buying all these things that are only 3D makes this mostly a novelty. The touchscreen is responsive.
RAZR Maxx
The RAZR is a much flatter device but makes up for this in length and width. It is a bit awkward to hold while talking, but not so much as to be uncomfortable. I tend to use Bluetooth headsets exclusively. It feels a tough lighter than the EVO 3D which is nice if you do tend to hold your phone. This one also has a 4.3” screen but it is Super AMOLED. It is a bit brighter than the qHD on the EVO 3D but overall is too close for my own naked eyes. The touchscreen is responsive.
Winner: Both
Camera
EVO 3D
The EVO 3D sports a pair of 5mp cameras on the back for 3D capture. It does this well, but warning if you are not used to looking at a 3D picture taken with this device then your eyes might go into shock. Once you are used to it then it is not so bad. The front camera is ok as are most. 2D pictures are crisp and the colors are decent. The shutter time is a bit slow for my tastes.
RAZR Maxx
The RAZR sports a single 8mp camera on the back. The quality of the pictures is very nice. Colors are brighter than the EVO 3D and it maintains the crispness of the photo. What really wowed me with the camera are both the night time picture taking and the shutter speed. At night with the flash pictures maintain crispness unlike every other phone camera I have used. The shutter speed is amazing as well. It is not quite as fast as the iPhone but it is dang close. Another nice bonus is Image Stabilization.
Winner: Motorola Droid RAZR Maxx
Internal Hardware and Ports
EVO 3D
The EVO has a Micro USB port for charging and video output with an adapter. Its Bluetooth works as expected with decent range to my Plantronics Voyager Pro. It is version 3 + HS providing 24 Mbit/s throughput. I haven’t tried that feature so I am not sure how accurate that spec is. The processor is a dual core 1.2 Ghz Snapdragon. It performs well and I will demonstrate stock ROM performance with benchmarks below. The battery is a bit lack luster on this phone. I feel I have to keep a charger on me at all times and keep it plugged up in the car all the time to keep charge.
RAZR Maxx
The RAZR also has a Micro USB, but includes a dedicated Micro HDMI port (yay) for use with video output and webtop features. I haven’t tried the webtop feature but it looks awesome and I am purchasing the HD dock soon to give it a spin. It sports Bluetooth 4.0 and functions as well as the EVO’s Bluetooth. The RAZR contains a TI OMAP 1.2 Ghz processor, benchmarks below. Battery… amazing. I have been abusing my phone for over 4 hours this morning and I am still sporting 80%. Imagine when it gets optimized with some crazy awesome ROM.
Winner: Motorola Droid RAZR Maxx
OS
EVO 3D
The EVO is running Android 2.3.4 with HTC Sense 3.0. For this I am going to talk about Sense a little. I love Sense, I find it to be awesome in every way except space on the phone. I may be a bit biased towards HTC (view my sig) but I like the stuff they put on and the Sprint stuff is excessive but not as bad as Verizon.
RAZR Maxx
The RAZR is running Android 2.3.6 with the Motorola interface (if it is still called Blur). There is a lot of bloatware on the phone from Motorola and Verizon. It is still snappy and responsive but having a dozen apps you do not need but cannot remove is annoying.
Winner: HTC EVO 3D
Benchmarks
I tried to get screen shots but Eclipse is being a pain and I am at work so I don’t have time to troubleshoot it. But here are the actual results. Note on Quadrant that I started the tests at the same time and the EVO was done by the time the RAZR made it through the first 5 CPU tests. As you can see the EVO slammed the RAZR on the CPU test in Quadrant.

Quadrant and Antutu are almost mirrors of themselves. Not sure which one is more accurate. All in all my opinion of the phones is similar. The both have ups and downs. Ones is mostly network related and some minor hardware deficiences and the other is software bloated. So hopefully this will help someone decide ( I have seen the questions more than once )

SLCD 2 better than Super AMOLED HD?

Hey Guys,
I just recently sold my Evo 3D and upgraded to the Galaxy Nexus on Sprint - very happy. I have noticed A LOT of raving reviews about the SLCD 2 screen and that it makes the AMOLED look washed out etc...
What are you initial reactions to the screen, brightness, clarity, viewing angles etc? Does it really beat out the Super AMOLED HD?
Thanks.

I have to say this screen is Ahhhhhhhhhh-mazing. I have a family member that has a iPhone 4s and my LTEvo screen uses the apples retina display to wipe it's @$$
I agree as well, the screen is truly amazing! Like seriously...when you look at it for the first time, it blows everything away.
When I saw press photos showing the EVO's screen, the skeptical side of me assumed they were photoshopped because the screen looked great, uniformly bright, and crisp at just about any angle. Now that I've seen it in person, it is seriously ridiculously awesome. When looking at it at an angle it doesn't even LOOK like an LCD screen; it looks like a screenshot of my phone pasted on top of the screen, kinda like those non-functional demo units you see in stores. It's just silly.
Another notch in the SLCD2's favor is that it won't have any burn-in. I think I read somewhere that AMOLED screens are vulnerable to burn-in?
I think my One X display is better than my Note/Nexus display, and better than the S3 display (I had a couple of hours hands-on with the S3 last weekend). The S3 display is also awesome, but overall SLCD-2 still has it for me (and I'm a self-confessed AMOLED fan).

Wow. Overwhelming votes for SLCD 2. Has anyone come from a Galaxy Nexus?
I upgraded from a Nexus S to a Galaxy Nexus. I wasn't disappointed with the display but I don't remember being amazed by it either. I returned the GNEX within my 14 day window when i heard of the discounts for preordering the LTEvo at BB and trading in an og Evo.
Just completely blown away by the LTEvo display right out of the box...
SLCD2 ~ Samoled+ >> Samoled HD.
SLCD2 = amazing pixel density, high resolution - immediately noticeable if you play a lot of youtube videos. Good brightness. Requires high brightness for good contrast ratio.
Samoled+ = amazing contrast ratio. Not pixelated. Good brightness. Somewhat low resolution, only noticeable in videos.
Samoled HD = a step down from samoled+ in all almost all parameters. Still amazing contrast ratio. But very pixelated. Decent brightness.
Phones I've used - Evo LTE, Epic Touch, Galaxy Nexus.
I'd say I equally enjoy both SLCD2 and Samoled+. Samoled HD is just too grainy and dim.

EVO LTE vs iPhone 4S camera side-by-side

With all my EVO love behind me, I'll just state the facts as below are two pictures taken at slightly different angles the first with the EVO LTE, the second with the iPhone 4S.
The EVO LTE picture:
Replicated the color of the wood table much better.
I took four pics using auto, hdr, and macro before deciding which to use as the best.
I chose the macro picture that was taken.
Higher resolution screen.
No flash.
iPhone 4S picture:
My coworker only took this one pic.
No special settings used (I.e. macro/depth field)
No flash.
Better texture detail of wood grain.
Better texture detail of mouse.
Red tone of table (color distortion)
I think that's all the information I have to offer about these images and how they were taken. I believe the EVO LTE could take as good a pic, but the right settings would need to be used. Opinions? Any questions about how these images were taken ?
I am still impressed w the EVO LTE camera and have taken some stunning and mean pics!

I think this is HTC's best camera phone. Hands down. They aren't really known to have the best. But I think it meets Samsung gsg2 quality and then some in different lighting.
And also I took an outside picture with my friends 4s and with my EVO. No special settings and the Evo kept its resolution better. I think it boils down to location

I'm not 100% sure which is which but there is no contest between the two photo's and the photo on the left looks like crap.
The focus looks off on the EVO pic.
I think my EVO LTE takes better looking pictures than the one you've shown here... I just took a handful of photos with both the EVOLTE and the iPhone4s in various modes to upload and compare. Unfortunately my iPhone buddy and I are both at work and only have horrible sprint 3g upload speeds, so it'll be a while...

I agree. The white balance seems different also.
I think I did a lot better with my image. You should let the camera focus in some.
I also did a quick comparison. I tried to get the same angle. I took 4 shots. Other than rotating the iPhone pics via Preview->Export->100% JPEG to fix rotation, these are straight from camera.
Note: The Evo's camera is set to widescreen by default so I had to uncheck that option for 2 of the shots. I've included the widescreen images from the Evo for comparison.
From left to right/top to bottom:
iPhone 4s - Auto
iPhone 4s - HDR
Evo LTE - Auto - Non widescreen
Evo LTE - HDR - Non widescreen
Evo LTE - Auto
Evo LTE - HDR
I've also uploaded the full images to my dropbox (same order as above)

I believe the point is to try and get a fair comparison and not try to make one side win. It does look like the HDR mode on the Evo uses a wider exposure bracket making it look too "fake". Even though the lens on the Evo may have a wider apeture at f2.0 compared to the iPhone 4s' f2.2, it looks like the iPhone is still a tad sharper. I'll still have the iPhone 4s on me as a quick point and shoot.
Here are the EvoLTE vs iPhone 4S comparision shots... I think they both look pretty great for smartphone photos! The EVO HDR shot got a little ghosting, but has a nice level of detail. All of the iphone shots came out slightly brighter (more light)...
HTC Evo 4G LTE HDR vs iPhone 4S HDR
HTC Evo 4G LTE vs iPhone 4S
Fun times comparing these, enjoy!
edit. I should also add that I had turned up sharpness setting on the Evo to +1, i think everything else is default.
I would carry an iPhone 4s to throw on the ground
Both are excellent
