With Andy Rubin's latest tweet (Senior VP of Mobile at Google and Android founder). He stated that there are currently over 500,000 Android devices activated every day.
Can someone take the time to explain the Android activation process and how the figure of 500,000 daily activations is comprised? What information is passed to register your phone / tablet etc as a new device, is it the the unique IMEI or the carrier cell phone number activation with data sourced from these or is it much simpler and less accurate by just agreeing to the Terms and Conditions on the Market on a fresh install?
Another query but in the same vein, if you've previously wiped your phone and re-installed multiple ROM's, would each of these be classed as a unique activation or does it go back to the singularly unique IMEI and is activated only the once?
Cheers.
It's based on the first Android Market connection (Google Account / Device Serial association)
Google uses IMEI when device is activated. They can tell the duplicates from anyone doing a full wipe.
Activation is done when logging into the google account during setup
Thanks for that

I jumped on the bandwagon and installed the 2.1 Leaked rom for my Droid Eris as soon as possible.
Last week my gmail accounts password was stolen. Also, my gmail account was sending out spam.
I ran a ESET32 Anti-virus security scan and found no threats. Afterwards I ran Malwarebytes and also found the same results, nothing. I changed my gmail password and all other accounts associated with my gmail.
I am a competent computer user and keep my Windows 7 64bit install clean, tidy, and updated. I use Google Chrome to browse the web carefully and I only visit websites I trust. Although it is very possible, I find it highly unlikely that my system was infiltrated.
I assumed I screwed up somewhere and my desktop was hacked.
Heres where the interesting part starts, Although I changed my password around a week ago, apon logging into Gmail today I was notified about my account being accessed on June 3 (3 days ago) from 6 different Chinese Ip's. I changed my password and security question today and closed all of the email sessions located in China.
My system shows 0 threats after running ESET ENOD32 Anti-Virus and Malwarebytes.
I don't have any other device that stores my Email password besides my Droid Eris.
I could be stepping out onto a limb here, but I still have to enter my Gmail password everytime upon opening the Android Market. I know this has been listed as a bug before. Also, I can't enter my password to enter the Market unless my 3G AND GPS is turned on. It does not work if the GPS is off.
Could it be possible that everytime I enter my GMAIL password into the Market app, it sends a copy out to China?
Why does my GPS have to be turned on to accept my password?
Is the "leaker" from china who released the 2.1 ROM to XDA a trusted source?
Help me out guys!
update to the latest leak and you wont be having these problems

The leak, although it appeared to come from riverrunner, actually was leaked by one of the devs that has put in a lot of work in making the eris awesome.
Like Royel said, update to the latest version of the leak and you shouldn't have any of the password login problems.
Not sure about the gmail problems, but I've been running all the leaked versions and had no problems so far.
This post prompted me to check on my account also
Confirmed, IP in China has been logging into my gmail account also.

Where do you find out how to check.
Log in to Gmail, scroll all the way to the bottom. It will show which IP you last logged in from. Next to it is a link, I think it says "details". A window will pop up showing you all IP addresses that your account has been logged in from.

I am a new user, so I can't post links to the how to. Basically log in to gmail, click on settings, scroll down to the bottom where it shows how much storage you are using, just below that in tiny print is "last account activity", click on details.
I just checked the details on my account and I am getting no logins from China, or anywhere that isn't me.
Just a thought, but have you checked to see if it's the same IP address each time? If so, you may be getting a weird IP address from VZW that google is geo-locating to be from China even if it isn't.
Unless we start getting a lot more people confirming this, I would say it is probably not an issue with the leaked rom but more likely something else (virus on your computer, an app that logs into google accounts for you).
wow, weird. i've often checked my "last account activity."
i'll randomly get some logins (all mobile logins) from another state (Michigan... right next door to me). i imagine it's just due to the IP that i'm getting on my phone...
now, i've NEVER seen anything from China before... and i've run just about all the leaked ROMs out there
strange indeed... i'm assuming all the "china" IP's were mobile logins?
I just checked mine and I had multiple logins from two different IPs. The ones from a desktop were my IP (in Oklahoma) and all of the ones from a mobile device were from a Florida IP. I logged off all of the other accounts and changed the password to a long string of letters and numbers, then logged in on both my desktop and my phone. After that the same two IPs were logged in, so apparently my verizon IP is somewhere in Florida.
I'm not sure why they would use an IP in china, but it could be a similar thing happening to you guys.
While blocks of IP addresses are allocated regionally (hence the different IP registries such as ARIN, RIPE, and APNIC, this happens at very small prefixes (huge blocks of IP addresses).
Geo-location of an IP address is imprecise for a wide variety of reasons. (Despite what you see on popular "crimefighter" TV shows). An AS (BGP Autonomous System) can emit packets from multiple points within their network, depending on instantaneous routing conditions; this is especially true for large national carriers such as Comcast, Verizon, Sprint, AT&T, etc.
One thing that no-one mentioned here is that every one of the Leak ROMs were cryptographically signed by somebody at HTC. If there is malicious code in the ROM, it came from HTC. Seems kind of unlikely. Feasible, but still seems unlikely.

Leak isn't sending out passwords. In fact, if i remember right your pass isn't stored on the phone, a key is.
Virus scan won't catch everything, especially new things.
1) Do any OS upgrade on your PCs, I recommend for non techies http://tinyurl.com/m7r5h or for techies http://tinyurl.com/mkly.
2) change all your passwords
3) dont cross use passwords
4) choose complex passwords >10char in length.

2nd to that, also Another great one for techie http://www.archlinux.org only if you like getting ur hand dirty and learn more about how Linux work from ground up, less hassle than doing Linux from Scratch lol, although it's fun, very rewarding experience and it'll come in handy when you want to do ROM cooking since it's based on Linux.
Having never used Android before, I bought my first Android device last month (Xperia Play) and installed it on my HP TouchPad. Of course, I had never used the Android Market before either, so when I made a test purchase from the Android Market I was surprised to see it go through without ever asking me for payment details. I got an email receipt to my Google account saying that I could get a refund in a certain amount of time, but I still had no idea what card or account it had been charged too. Eventually, I found that $5 had been deducted from my Chase checking account, presumably from my debit card. That's strange because I have not used Google Check Out or anything Google-related since the last time my check card was replaced, so I can't imagine how they got the payment details. It's on my twin brother's family plan, so it was not charged through the cellular provider either. To make matters worse, I no longer used that account and it caused an overdraft (corrected)
Now, I checked every account and settings screen I could find in the Android Market app but I could find nothing about payments or payment methods. I logged in to market.android.com on my PC and similarly could find nothing. I checked their help and FAQ questions: Nothing. I searched here: Page after page of irrelevant results. ARGH!
I'm ready to make more app purchases (Titanium Backup Pro, PdaNet, etc) but I only have enough in that account to cover the bills that I pay from it and I can't allow Google to withdraw on that bank account again. How can I switch payment methods so that it will not automatically bill the wrong account AGAIN?
Edit: "ARGH!" again. I found a thread about billing to your AT&T account being added and there was a screenshot distinctly showing AT&T billing as a drop-down in some kind of checkout page in the Market app. Thinking I must have somehow missed it, I installed Titanium Backup and then chose to purchase the key. Once again there was NO checkout and it just went ahead and purchased without ever giving the option to provide a funding source. How on Earth did they ever get my payment details and how to I manage them?!
I immediately canceled/refunded the order.

Thanks, but I already looked for Google Checkout options in the logical places last month and found nothing, but I shouldn't have to even look: It is illogical that they would use the service without my permission and without informing me. Even so, I checked Google.com>More>Even More while logged in and searched in the page for "Check" with no results. I am logged in. On the Google page I only have search related configuration options.
OK, so I tried to go to checkout.google.com MANUALLY and it forwarded me to "Google Wallet," which I have never used before. I had to agree to all kinds of things just to get in there and delete the card, so it's like they were holding it hostage until I agree. One thing is for sure: I NEVER agreed to automatically be charged through the Android Market. *NOW* will I finally be prompted for payment options when I chose to buy an app? I'll find out soon.
They are getting pretty sloppy. First, I got slammed by over $30 of texting fees because their Google Voice app said it was receiving the messages in the messaging app instead of saying that it was forwarding them to my mobile number (Grrr... without even a warning about potential fees, they worded it exactly like the feature I was looking for: like iMessage and BBX or SMS GV Extensions on iPhone integrating with the native text messaging app).
The fact that there is no mention of GCO/Wallet anywhere on the Android Market options or help pages is a serious oversight.
Oh yeah I forgot that Google check was changed to Google wallet recently. I know when I buy an app it tells me what card it is charging it to before I buy it
same here. I didn't start using the Android Market until the 10 cent deals came out. It asked me if I wanted to charge it to my cell provider or enter a new credit card. Each time I make a purchase I have both of those options, though my credit card info is saved with Google Wallet or what ever it is. Then I have to manually enter my pin. I wasn't sure what this was at first, but tried my phone lock pin and that was it.
Please use the Q&A Forum for questions Thanks
Moving to Q&A
A very stupid problem happened to me and caused no access to Android market (Google play) and to all my purchased applications. I will explain, maybe there is someone who has an idea how to solve this.
I bought my Moto ATRIX 4G one year ago in US and registered it to google (gmail, market, google+) using my AT&T mobile number I got with the phone. As I am only from time to time in the US, I unlocked the branding to AT&T, got root access and unblocked the bootloader. Here at home I use the ATRIX with my Portuguese sim card.
In the meantime google changed the access to market, gmail etc. by adding this additional security with a code (called two step something) sent by text message. So you need username, password and every 30 days (?) this code from google.Unluckily this code is sent to my AT&T (US) number only. That time I forgot to register a second number to get the code. My AT&T sim card has no rooming (it is a prepaid one) so I can not use it here at home to get the code.
Last week I flashed my ATRIX to cyanogen(mod) ROM. After flashing your ROM you have to install again (or restore from a back-up) your applications. Anyway for the purchased applications (and I have about 30 ones !) you need to have full access to the market to prove (load) your licence key even you restored them from a back-up.
Here I am stuck now. My access to the marked is blocked due to the missing code sent by google. I tried everything to get access:
- About 10 emails to google. They are always responded by an automatic feedback.
- There is some kind of form you can fill to prove that you are the owner of the account. Not worked.
- Tried to register my Portuguese phone number to get the code on this number. No option to register a second number now.
- I tried the Google Authenticator. The created code is not working for me.
All feedbacks from google refused to activate my account.
Of course I can wait an other two month still I am back in the US and can get the code, but this isn't really satisfying. Not to be missunderstood: My username and my password are OK and accepted. Only this code is missing.
In my opinion this is a very bad situation. I have purchased all these applications from the market and now I am blocked to use / download / re-install them by google.
Do anybody had a similar experience ? Is there any contact (telephone, email, ...) with google, where I will not get an automated feedback. Your help is greatly appreciated.
Hello,good day everyone
This is bloodygood(oh I really don't want to say my name) from Nigeria
Please I am having problems with my phone or should I say WeChat,I probably don't know
I have downloaded and installed WeChat from playstore five times now and also register five times, but anytime I register and scan the WeChat (which is really hard this days) it always blocked my account(I always register new account because it's really hard to unblock it) but my other friends have theirs still working up to 5 months
And they always Suggest it's my phone that's making WeChat to block my account
So guys I really want to know where the problem originate from. my phone is a Tecno camon 11,4gb and 64gb RAM, thank you.
@Bloodygood
There’re three types of WeChat account blocked, One is temporary block and can get unblocked by yourself. The other one just can’t get unblocked by yourself, you need to ask WeChat to help you unblock it. Or you need to wait for one or two weeks to unblock it or it will be unblock automatically. As for the last one is permanently block, there’s no way to unblock it, as you’ve violated the terms of WeChat so much.
Thank you for your reply @jwoegerbauer
But this is the first time I am hearing that temporarily blocked WeChat can automatically get unblocked by itself.
But why do all my 5 separate WeChat account keep getting blocked ?
Is it from my phone
Because it is perfectly working on others but when it comes to mine it is always writing security threat like this account is suspicious.
Have you tried logging in from different IP or using VPN?

The reasons for WeChat account block
1. WeChat you downloaded on your phone is from an unofficial channel.
2. Phone is rooted what put your WeChat account security endanger.
3. Your WeChar account is reported to send or share some content including lewd content, violent materials, scams, inappropriate rumors, annoying ads, etc.
4. The phone number you used to log in or register WeChat is provided by virtual network operators.
5. You are using a phone number for WeChat account that is operating abnormally.
6. You've been reported by other users for multiple times.
7. You are using WeChat account for violating its terms.

I downloaded it from playstore
My phone is not rooted
I actually don't have less than 4 people on my WeChat
Which I have never send inappropriate things
The number is alright I have used it on other sites, they are all working perfectly
Even I was reported,I never did receive a warning
So I'm afraid of registering a new one in my phone to avoid being blocked
Maybe WeChat have got my Mac address,my IP address and my serial number,so that anytime I do register on that device I will surely get blocked
@Bloodygood
Wondering why you don't simply contact WeChat Help Center to get your problem solved?

Hi there!
I wanted to create a Samsung Account to use all of the features my tablet supports.
I already had one because of a Galaxy Watch S3, but now it always wants my mobile number so I can continue using the account.
Is there any way around that?
I saw that they support OTP, but when I want to enable the 2FA it only sasys I have to give my mobile number to continue.
As my Tablet is WIFI only I don't want to give Samsung my number.
Do you have a clou for that?
Thanks in Advance!
2FA requires a phone number to send auth messages too... there is no way around it if you want the extra security.
I hate these Data mining things!
Theres no problem giving the opportunity to do the OTP from the beginning without having to register your phone number.
All companys only want your data.
Sorry, but that drives me nuts as IT security guy.
