I have the new tablet and I just want to make sure is this forum ( HTC Flyer ) the right one for my EVO Tablet
The flyer is the WiFi only version. The view is the sprint branded version
Sent from my PG86100 using XDA App
Correct but I don't see a forum for the HTC EVO View Tablet
that raises a good point. I just got the view 4g and don't know if the same things that are posted in this forum (flyer) are the same things that apply to my tab
the htc flyer and htc evo view 4g are the same device though where as the evo view 4g has a sprint radio in it and a different case for the device (the flyer's back cover comes off supposedly)
The Evo View and Flyer are the same tablet except for 3 main things. Case Color is black vs white. View is 3g/4g+wifi, Flyer is Wifi only. View has 32g ram, Flyer is 16G. There is no other difference in cases, layout or hardware. There are some differences in software builds but they are slight and basically for the 3g/4g connection.
Any word if the View will get it's own forum? It seems we have enough people asking about it.

Not quite true, The Flyer can be WiFi only 16Gb or 3G/HSDPA 32Gb.

And for me, that adds to the confusion. I am having a hard time trying to figure out if the EU (and other) 3G/HSDPA (4G?) versions of the Flyer have more in common with the View than they have with the varius WiFi only Versions of the Flyer. Perhaps, instead of a View sub forum, we should be asking for a 3G / 4G sub forum?
Rooting my Droid X was more like "press the button, wait for it to restart itself and it was done." The concept of having to know something about what you are doing or you will screw it up is pretty scary. And with so many slightly different versions of the tablet, I am absolutely terrified that I will brick it. But still, I am absolutely commited to learning how to root my View (even if it is just to get full bluetooth compatibility).
I went through two Samsung Galaxy Tablets, then took a WiFi only Flyer back in order to get the View, so I have a pretty goo understanding of the difference between the US versions of the device. But with so many other versions worldwide, it makes me afraid that I might do something that might have worked on let's say an EU version of the tablet, but not on my View. Anything that helps keep that from happening would be a good thing.
For lack of a better time and place to say this, I am very grateful that there seems to be a lot more civility and a higher level of acceptance for newbies (like me) in this section of the forum than in sections devoted to more established devices (for instance the EVO 4G). (Unfortunately I did not know enough to not allow the OTA Update that happened a few days after I bought my EVO 4G.)
I have a US View and rooted it. As far as the new devices root methods it is pretty much click a file you are s-off then flash a recovery then flash su and yore rooted. If you have flashed roms before this will be a breeze to root your view.

Where is the section for the HTC EVO View 4G? I noticed that their isnt a section for it and also people on XDA said that the HTC Flyer isnt compatible with the EVO View. So I was wondering if the moderators can make a permanent section for them?

I tried out the Kindle Fire, even rooted it, but just wasn't happy with it. Then just a couple days ago I received a BlackBerry Playbook. My dissatisfaction with both of them stems from the fact I seem to be trying to turn them into a full fledged Android Tablet, with only minimal success.
So I'm looking at the Flyer/View 4g. I found a used like new Flyer on Amazon for $299, and a new in box View 4g on Ebay for $315. Though I don't need the data, I think $16 for double the internal memory is very much worth it, and the View 4g will "match" my HTC Thunderbolt in looks better. What I need to know is, will everything, root and ROMs, that works on the Flyer also work on the View 4g?
I'm fairly tech savvy, I rooted both my Incredible and my Thunderbolt (the Thunderbolt twice, as the screen came loose on the first one) and have both running CM7. I'm not sure I want to put a custom ROM on the tablet, but being an AOSP fan, I might see something I dislike about it and want to change it.
Can someone help me out with this?

Exactly. while the View and the Flyer look the same and share a lot of the same internals, the View is a CDMA/Wimax tablet, and the Flyer is either WiFi only or GSM capable. Take into account that the Flyer is offered in multiple countries around the world and the View is only on Sprint in the US.
With the Flyer being more widely available, there are more devs out there for it than the View.
I've had the view since launch and it's rooted with a custom rom, but i've only seen two View roms total with one completely defunct while the other is waiting on the HC release to come out (which I hear is imminent). Now that con said, in the US i've never been without at least 3G and I travel a lot. 4G is unlimited and good where I live. You can probably get a view from Sprint with contract for $250 and get them to gift you the scribe for free. Just ask.
Oh and the otterbox just came out for both.
Right now there's no honeycomb for view
Sent from my ADR6400L using xda premium
Well, the contract with Sprint is a non-issue. I have fast WiFi at home, and if I desperately need a connection while I'm out, I can tether to my Thunderbolt. It's not worth it to me to shell out an additional $240 (plus taxes and government fees) a year for data on it. It's most likely to spend it's time at home by the couch, unless I know I'll have need of it. My Kindle Keyboard, on the other hand, goes everywhere with me. I'm an avid reader.
As far as cases goes, I've got the pen and this case on the way: http://www.amazon.com/Flyer-Multi-A...KQB6/ref=sr_1_8?ie=UTF8&qid=1322843576&sr=8-8
I don't tend to be hard on my electronics, I've been using my Thunderbolt with nothing but a screen protector and the clamshell belt thingy from Seidio (note, not the one with the hard shell covr for the phone itself, just the belt portion) for 6 months with no scratches or other damage to the phone. Ok, except that the dark coating on the kickstand is wearing off, but cases don't cover that, anyway.

As I understand it, a HC update is imminent for both, right? And with some of what I've been reading on these forums, HC isn't exactly the be all, end all on this device since it runs on Gingerbread so well. I think I'm content to go ahead and get the View, and be the red-headed stepchild.
Besides, one other thing I was wondering...if you put a Senseless, AOSP type ROM on it, would you lose all, or some, of the cool stuff the pen can do? I'm not sure just how much is baked into the ROM, and how much is in apps I can download.

Advice needed
I just bought a View from some online store.
Android Version 2.3.4
HTC Sense 2.1
Software Number 1.22.651.2
PRI version 2.28)003
PRL version 60679
Kernal version 2.6.35.10-xxxxx
Baseband version 1.05.11.0531
Build number 1.22.651.2 xxxxx
I don't want to hook up with Sprint. I want know how I can debrand it and/or unlock it. And if necessary to flash it to a ROM so I can use 3G somewhere else, especially use it in China with CDMA carriers there. Thank you in advance.
I'm getting my fiance one or the other for christmas, but I would like to know if there is actually the development support for the view as the flyer. Is it worth getting the view over the flyer for the price or am I going to pay for it in the long run due to lack of support? The reason I ask it is doesn't seem like there is much support for the view under the development section and I would like to know I have community support in anything I buy. I see we have root on both devices but there doesn't seem like near as many roms and such on the view as the flyer, which I understand because the view is just a sprint product. Where the flyer is sold globally. More or less I'm just looking for advice on which is the better buy, as I know for sure that she does want the flyer/view for the pen functionality and form factor of the flyer/view. Thanks for the help.
Flyer. If development is a big issue for you(as it is for most people on here), then that's your pick. And an added bonus is that the flyer will have a better resale value because it is gsm
Sent from my MB860 using XDA App
Cool, that's mainly what I needed to know.
There isn't exactly an abundance of support for the flyer as far as I am aware.
Oh, so I guess it's not going to matter either way? I've seen a few custom roms for the flyer, but only one for the view. The biggest thing I'm concerned about is that she wants to "try" honeycomb(assuming it does actually show up), but she didn't really like it in the store on the other tabs(A100, Tranformer, etc.). So I really just want to make sure if I allow her to accept the OTA that I can get it back to stock GB if necessary. I assume that I could just root and recover back to GB if necessary? Same as I can take my TB back to stock if I wanted, or do you think I am mistaken on this?
Flyer. We don't know what the rollback options will be on the view (if any) after an OTA update to HC.

This will be the kicker then. And since you're a Dev. then I'm not even going to bother with trying to deal with the view. Plus you have already wrote the rollback guide for me if that needed to happen. Thanks again for responses.

Ebay. That's the only place I could find them. I originally took her to best buy, and she tried the A100, the Flyer, the Gtab, Nook, and Kindle. She originally wanted a kindle, but after playing with it she didn't like how it felt, and it had to be a 7 in or close to it, so since BB still had the Flyer up on display she played with it and loved it, so I was looking to get her what she wanted.

I could have been wrong, it was a quick glance though the first 3 pages in the Dev section. If you looked though the Dev section and there isn't one there then it was a mistake on my part.
The thread in question was written by Contradude and the ROM name is ClerverNameHere.
Seems the View is the better option if you can get for the same price or less, since the View has 16gb more internal storage and no white sides (OK, that is picky).
I have the Flyer and have ordered the View for $235.
Either model IMO is the best option for 7" tablets, none the less.
Two more questions, has anybody used the mhl adapter? Does it do hdmi mirroring? Or is it more of a media output like the dnla adapter? And, has anyone used a keyboard/mouse with it? I assume this will only be possible with the hc update, but I would still like to know for curiosity sake.
Sent from my ADR6400L using Tapatalk
The View is a beautiful device. The best looking 7" tablet available.
The problem is that the support for it is terrible, in terms of roms, and Honeycomb probably won't happen. That's fine with me though since it is an excellent and strong device, as is.
I got the View also bc its on sale and the 32gb of memory.

I'm buying it, but only because it's the next big thing. I'll probably order it this weekend, and sell my EVO 3D next weekend with all of it's accessories to pay for it.
I like the larger battery. The processor is a huge upgrade. Sense 4.0 with ImageSense will definitely be useful (I have a daughter and I'm always taking pictures when we're out. Although, I just bought a $1000 DSLR, but I don't like dragging it everywhere with me). The fact that this model has an SD card slot, AND 16GB onboard is a big selling point for me as well. 4.7" screen gives me more viewing area (I'd get a note, but I don't think I could EVER get out of having HTC Sense).
Yeah i forgot about the camera that is another big plus. Something else i've always wondered was the B!tch Everyone has for the non removable battery. On my OG Evo i had 6 batteries i carried around with me all the time. I hated that. Why not just buy one of those recharge packs and if you need battery in a pinch use that. So many ppl i've seen are throwing this under the bus because of not being able to remove the battery.

Its permanent. There is also a temp custom clockwork recovery that they are using to flash ROMs. They have a couple guys who have S-off on their phones but its still a WIP to get the bootloader unlocked. Looks really good for EVO LTE owners so far.
I am still on the fence about getting it. Due for my last yearly upgrade on June 1, but with the ICS leaks and the impending official release, I think I will be good for at least a little while longer. This phone getting root would drive my decision a little further to one side or the other.
Another point I forgot to mention is ACTUALLY having a true Beats capable phone. Not kinda works/kinda doesn't.

He's on GSM; you can't blame sprint. HTC is slow to update on all carriers. Lack of updates aren't HTC's only problem though, their other problem is using ridiculously proprietary hardware (so AOSP based roms are basically impossible) and the fact that they lock down their bootloaders and give you a really crappy alternative unlock.
I've moved on to the galaxy nexus, and I'm never going to get another HTC phone again.

Its not underrated, its more like under the radar. Lets face it the EVO is a small name in the industry when you have a device across all carriers which is selling at record numbers. The EVO is viewed more as the little engine that could.

Does anyone care whether or not our phone gets the publicity? As far as I'm concerned we have the best kept secret in smartphones.
The constant bashing for the LTE issue is not helping it either. Sprint still has not said officially that they are working on a fix with HTC. This phone had LTE issue in the lab before it launched but Sprint needed the phone to launch otherwise they would risk losing many accounts coming off their 2 year with no new flagship phone to go to. So it was rushed out the gate, and HTC/Sprint have tried to fix the modem twice with an OTA, but have failed both times. My hope that a 3rd round will correct the issue is getting weaker by the day.
I think I'll be taking advantage of the GS3 upgrade on Black Friday and rotating the "EVO Can't do-LTE" to of my other lines that really doesn't care about 4g. Love the EVO's battery life, screen, performance etc, but the LTE issue just hits hard. Kinda like buying a sports car with a nice V8, it looks good, but the manufacturer just hasn't figured out how to get the computer to make all 8 cylinders fire correctly so it's running on 4 cylinders for now.

The difference between HTC and Samsung, I believe, is their market approach.
Samsung has it right. They sell one major phone on multiple carriers, advertise it in ways that appeal to their largest audience (probably 15-35). And they have a few other lower end phones too.
HTC doesn't understand this, I suppose. The One series was halfway there. But then the EVO is too exclusive. Then, to dig HTC deeper into their hole, instead of focusing on marketing and updates for the One series line up, they for some reason think they would come out ahead by spending time and money in development for these new One X+ things.
WTF?
Though I am an HTC fanboy, mostly a Sense Fanboy, I don't deny HTC's bad strategies as a company. If I didn't think TouchWiz looked like something from the Dollar General, I might get a GS3. But what it comes down to when a user chooses a phone today, is what User Interface does that person prefer? Sense? TouchWiz? iOS? BlackberryOS? That is the determining factor, I believe.

BTW,
I loved the other day when a coworker was showing off her new iPhone 5 to everyone who was gathered around. She said, "AND IT DOES VOICE TO TEXT NOW!"
Sorry, had to make fun.
i work at best buy and everyone looking for the gs3, after showing them my phone. they are like i will take that one. i have yet to have a customer take the gs3 over the evo. but they just didnt know the evo was even out. and they were coming from the old one.
i think the evo lte is the best phone out.. not just because i have it but the screen is bangin.. battery life is great.. the lte beats any other phone in quadrants.. linpacks.. antutu benchmarks u name it.. it is funny how the LTE gets NO love at all.. when ever i read write ups on phone tec the LTE never ever gets mentioned.. the LTE is the beast thats nobody talks about.. the gs3 is a dope phone also i just dont like touch wiz at all.. im a HTC guy.. my babys mother has the gs3 i rooted it for her and flashed a few roms on it.. 2 top phones out rite now the evo lte & the gs3!!! :good:
If you ask me, I say this phone is overrated to be honest. This is coming from someone that has owned all 3 of the EVOs. The specs of the phone looks great on paper, but the phone just doesn't perform that well in the real world. Seems like there's more time spent trying to get the phone to run right instead of just enjoying it. HTC failed BIG TIME when they screwed-up the phone's ability to multitask properly. I've been a member of this site for over 6 years and have a very low post count since I've mainly lurked throughout the years. A large portion of my current post count is because of this EVO and trying to get it to run smoothly. This is my second one, btw.
Anytime you have to rely on a web site to fix multiple problems for things that a manufacturer should have made sure were working properly before selling to consumers equals a huge fail IMO. There's a large portion of people on these forums that don't mind spending all of their free time tinkering and fixing their phones, but for an average consumer that leads a busy lifestyle, do you really think they want that kind of hassle, especially if they're not tech savvy? HELL NO!!!

So what do you tell them when they see the S3 with LTE and the EVO LTE stuck on 3G all the time?

Well, we all know the evo line has had its red headed stepchildren through the generations. I don't care what anyone says about the LTE, IMHO, I made the right choice.

+1, this phone is great!

The EVO is exclusive to Sprint, they created the brand because the needed a big push to compete with the other service providers. They weren't just trying to out do Apple, never were. The Apple bashing was to help solidify the brand as a recognizable device easily capable of matching the top smartphone at the time. The biggest problem is that the EVO line is Sprint exclusive, its not underrated by any means
Lol...I own both. I love both
Both will be old news within 2 months lol

Does anyone care whether or not our phone gets the publicity? As far as I'm concerned we have the best kept secret in smartphones.

I agree completely.
I also think the built in kickstand sets the EVO line apart from others . I watch a lot of netflix at work and see other peeps.using books to hold there phone up
I wish it was a bit beefier but its just as strong as the old kick stand and has the built in spring for extra support. I like that u can flip it any way I want and still prop it up
